J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Anyone tried the jcrew chino sailor pants? Am reading in a few places that it runs large, would really like to hear some more!

  2. Has anyone tried/reviewed the gingham short-sleeve shirtdress (the one with the handkerchief hem - not the classic short sleeve shirtdress in gingham)? I'm obsessing over it now that it has sold out in my size, and wondering if it's worth my continued stalking/obsessing :)

    1. IslandGirl - I haven't seen a review for that dress. I do recall that it's online only, though. Hope you find a popoback :)

    2. I know, I keep checking for popbacks on that dress (there were sizes 10 and 2 available early this AM), but would like to see more IRL pictures before buying. I wish they hadn't done the handkerchief hem but maybe it's not too noticeable when wearing..

    3. I'm not sure if this is the dress you're talking about but Alexis is wearing a gingham shirtdress in her most recent IG pic (jcrewaficionada). It's very cute!

    4. Was just going to say what Lauren did above --- that Alexis posted a pix and it looks really lovely!

    5. I don't think that's the one with the handkerchief hem. But maybe it is???

    6. On second thought, I think the one Alexis posted is the one with the handkerchief hem. The hem doesn't look as obvious to me as it does in JCrew's product shot.

    7. Yes, that is the dress on Alexis! Oh, now I want it more! It does look lovely on her. I'm not generally a fan of a handkerchief hem, but it looks pretty subtle. Fingers crossed for a pop back! Thanks for all the info/support :)

    8. I wore this dress today, the same one that Alexis posted. I love it, it's comfortable and it's the perfect summer dress for my casual yet conservative office.

I found it true to size. The waist hits me slightly high, but I have a large bust (DD) and a long torso. I found it room through the bodice unlike some other recent JCrew dresses. Ladies with a smaller bust can likely size down 1 size.

Initially I didn't know if I would like the handkerchief hem, but it's even more subtle than the on-line photo. Honestly, I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't in the description.

I like this dress so much that I stalked and just scored the linen shirtdress, which is the same cut. I highly recommend, I believe this will be summer workhorse for me.

  3. Posted some Madewell Reviews last week but wanted to follow up. The Crusier straight jeans in Preston Wash are a darker wash than pictured on the site. In my usual Jcrew size the fit is perfect. Tried them on with heels and must say they may be the best fitting jeans I've tried on in some time. The leg is not skinny but a little more tapered than a typical straight jean, especially when cuffed once. The rear pockets are very flattering. The rise is a mid-high rise. Not belly button height but above hips. The only negative is that I wish the rinse/wash was more interesting. These are 100% cotton.

My other reviews are below. Posted last week but after the initial post so not sure it was seen. I need to get a good pic of the jeans but lighting is difficult.

bell shift tank in black--very lightweight, With a "bra lette" as the kids call them, will be fine. I like the shape and weight, as other reviewers on the site posted, it's a little shorter than I thought but to do a little tuck will actually be perfect. This is the type of shirt I'd get in multiple patterns/colors. So great for summer.

Stockton culottes in black--great swingy shape. Got the 0 and they fit a little loose, kind of like the 0 in the Gazebo pants. They didn't come in 00 but that would have been too tight anyway. Length is just above the ankle on me, which is perfect. The pockets show through the fabric kind of funny but I can try to steam them flat. They're a little heavier than I thought but not as heavy as a crepe. The shape is very flattering. Flat front trouser style but wide leg. I like them.

Rivet and thread button front boy jean. These fit well but will stretch a bit since they're all cotton. The rise is high but not unflattering. I feel like the ankle should be a little more tapered to be perfect but I'll try them with different shoes. I got my usual jcrew jean size, 25.

Cruiser straight jeans in two sizes, 25 and 26. The fit of these is similar to the Point sur jeans in Orran wash, but a slighter lighter weight denim. My regular size fits just perfectly but they will stretch. They're cute and half the price of the rivet and thread button front, without the fun detail of the buttons in a lighter weight denim. I feel like the length and cut of the ankle isn't necessarily ideal for me but otherwise
They're really nice and well proportioned. Again I'll try them with different shoes. I like that they're all cotton.

Catarina cover up tunic in totem stripe. I got XS and actually could have sized up for a looser slouchy fit. From the online pics I thought the fabric would have more texture, it's a screen print (or similar). I think it's fine for a cover up and will also look cute slightly tucked into denim cut offs. Probably if I saw this in person I might not have gotten it, but it's actually cute, just a little more boho than my usual.

Modern linen tank in black and heather slate-- love these. Hope they wash well, I'll probably wash on delicate or hand wash. This is the type of tank I'd buy 3 in each color.

Linen pull on shorts, these are super comfy, with a fit like jogging shorts but a nicer fabric. Jcrew had a bunch of similar ones last year. I don't necessarily think they are the most stylish or fashionable shorts but easy to wear with sandals or cute sneakers.

    Overall pretty successful.

    1. Finally got some decent denim pics and posted details of the jeans I tried. Also, my 18 approved them, so there's that!

  4. PATIO PANT IN WINDOWPANE TWEED: These look great! My only complaint is that I wish they were lined. I did not find them to be see through but lining would really elevate these pants. These pants will be great for work. I took the larger of my two J. Crew pant sizes as these pants don't have stretch.

  5. BOW-SHOULDER TOP IN STRIPE (item f1709)

Design: i really like it. the material is sturdy, the bow is a nice touch, lightweight summery feel without being sheer...

the fit tho: it's way too tent-like on me. i went with my smaller size and the shoulders and chest are perfect. but it's very a-line on me and winds up looking like a maternity shirt. i have very narrow hips and it just emphasizes the width of the shirt. i was hoping it fit more like the SEAMED SHELL IN ZIGZAG EYELET (item c7212) from a previous year, but it's doesn't.

    1. That definitely makes me think it would do nothing for me. Do you know if it's similar in fit to the eyelet top with collar? That flares out a bit on me.

    2. @Suz Has, See my post below, sorry I thought I hit reply.

    3. Hi SuzHas... sorry... i didn't see your comment yesterday.

not sure about the eyelet top you're referencing... but for some size reference on the bow top:

laying flat, measurements for size 2:
arm pit to arm pit: 18"
      bottom hem: 22"

my hips are about 34.5" so that sweep at the hem is greatly exaggerated on me. the top i was hoping it fit like (the zig zap eyelet top) has similar shape at the shoulders/chest but only flares to 19" at the hem. makes a huge difference.

hope that helps some. i do like the shirt a lot but as with many things with jcrew, the fit was just off for me :/

    4. No rush! It's pretty much sold out (other than 00 which might be too tight across the upper back?) but the measurements help a lot.

  7. I received the cool-dyed linen pocket sweater. I'm between sizes and ordered up. That was not the right call. I'll reorder in my smaller size. It's a beautiful sweater, perfect for casual Friday's with a denim skirt. The pink is a bit sheer so it will require a cami. I don't mind though. Classic j crew color.

  8. @Miss JR - I had the same experience, it was too tent like at the bottom for me too. Too bad because I really wanted it.
@Suz Has- if I recall correctly I think the bow shoulder top flares out more than the eyelet top with collar. I know it depends on shape but the bow shoulder top was very tent like especially in the back around my hip area. I'm usually a 0 in tops like that but they only had 00 to try. 00 fit fine up top (I'm small chested) but still too big around hips.

    1. Hmm, I was looking at my Madewell stuff and tried on the bell shift tank and realized it may have a similar tent like shape to the bow shoulder top. I actually really like it, so depending on where it hits the bow shoulder top may work for me. I was trying on my black patio pants and one thing I don't love about them is how they lay on my hips, but with this shirt just barely tucked they look pretty good. Since the bow is black it may look good together too.

    2. It is a beautiful shirt so it's worth a try! I hope it works for you. :)

  9. This is a factory review, but after seeing Ina's "wash and wear" lingerie travel bag on IG a while ago I was obsessed with getting one lol. Factory brought them back this spring and I picked it up in store. Very cute, I'm looking forward to using it on my vacation. Also picked one up as a gift.

  10. OT: Net-a-Porter is running a big sale with up to 50% off savings. There are plenty of J.Crew & Madewell items included in the sale, some of which have been sold out at J.Crew & Madewell online stores. I've shared some of my personal picks for the sale in this post.

  11. Thanks for these reviews. I just bought a beautiful outfit for my cousin’s wedding from J. Crew store. It’s a lovely outfit. My cousin will have a beachside wedding at Malibu wedding venues and was having a hard time in finding my outfit.
