J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I'd like to order a few Madewell items and wondering if anyone's tried the Stockton culottes. I think they'd be flattering on my shape and they're a great price' although poly.

  2. Highly recommend the short-sleeved linen shirtdress (f2538) if you can catch it on popback. It didn't even go on sale once before selling out and for good reason -- great fabric, nice midi length, defined waist, a very pretty light blue.

  3. Review of the new, classic short-sleeve gingham dress in this post. And links to a couple of other gingham dress options by other vendors.

    1. I dislike those "jetson sleeves" sooo much...

    2. Ha ha, I reviewed a chambray BR top a few weeks ago and said the same thing, that the sleeves were "too Jetsons" for me, and then I wondered if it was too dated a reference for anyone to get it! I'm glad I'm not the only one!

    3. That's funny! On a shirt, like the popover, I can deal with sleeves like that but I kept thinking if I put that dress on I'd look like a rectangle, because of the sleeves and no waist definition.

    4. I probably would have tried that dress if I didn't already buy Madewell's courier shirtdress in buffalo check, also black and white-ish. It has actual sleeves, which is much preferable, IMO. It's very cute and easy, if somewhat shapeless. It's rayon and I definitely would have preferred cotton, but I am a sucker for any gingham / buffalo check in black and white. Have not worn in super hot weather, so I don't know how it breathes. Runs large; definitely size down.

  4. Does anyone have an IRL photo of the midi dress in polka dot?

  5. Thumbsup on the tiered eyelet dress and cotton cropped tunic on Gigi's Gone Shopping. Don't know why the latter is called cropped.

  6. JCrew: Tulip Skirt in Ratti Happy Cat Print. They got the 'Happy' part right, that's how I feel when I see this print. I got my usual petite size and it fits fine, just like my pencil skirts, maybe a tad looser. The back hits at the top of my calf and the front shows just a hint of my knee. I'm planning on wearing it with my navy Scoop Neck Perfect-fit tee. Because of all the colors in the print, I can see wearing it with red, green, yellow, white, light blue and chambray. I have a lot of plans for this pretty skirt.
Ikat Scarf: Nice, lightweight woven scarf. The description shows that it is ivory and black. The black is very light, almost reads grey on the right side of the fabric. Appears darker on the back side. Looks as it appears on my monitor. I think this will be a great Summer scarf.

Madewell Thea sandal in black: I got my usual size and they fit great. I haven't worn them long, but they feel very comfortable.

  7. Collection Silk Stripe Top - Most sizes are sold out, but it's likely they'll pop back. I picked this up in store during 30% off purchase. The fit was tts in an 8; the 1 reviewer mentions sizing down, but being a 36C and with my arms, that wouldn't be an option. I like the loose fit on the model and that's the look I want. The silk has a nice weight and feels like a good quality. This is not a thin silk, so the weight is heavier. It will pair well with the pleated midi stripe skirt from last summer with a wide belt.

Cotton Batik Floral Cover Up - This one is on sale and I was finally able to snag a medium. Fit was tts; the length was shorter than I expected; it hits at my thighs (I'm over 5'8"), but since it's a cover up, that's not an issue. Can also pair with shorts and a tank. A natural fabric is important to me in a cover up; J Crew has some other ones that I like, but they're polyester.

Colorful Stripe Underwire Bikini Top - I'm a sucker for colorful stripes (I'm loving the candy stripes for spring & summer), so this was a natural choice for me. My usual size fit tts & feels secure which is essential for me in a bikini top (no wardrobe malfunctions). Will pair with J Crew solid color string bikini bottoms in bright yellow and white that I snagged on deep discount.

  8. I reviewed the candy stripe dress on my blog:

I like it but I'm not sure I like it for me. I found it ran a bit on the small side.

    1. I like the dress on you & if you're wearing the gold wedges, they work in the photo. You might check out valleyoftheshoes IG for a wedge option. She's wearing a really cute Stuart Weirzman. I also picked up the dress and wore it with a pair of green Gucci snakeskin mules with a gold embellished heel (IG peterst1). Good luck with whatever you decide!

    2. Thanks Mygoddy, good to know you think my gold wedge espadrilles work, this dress is quite modern for me and I feel like I don't know what to do with it. Thanks for the IG tips I'm going to check them out now, green Gucci snakeskin mules sound fantastic by the way! :)

  9. So, I got my Dr. Scholl's in hologram glitter and they are CRAZY cute. I had to wear them the day I got them. I think I mentioned they are not super comfortable, and part of that is that they run strangely large, I think. I am a solid 8 in most shoes, including JC flats, 8.5 in most JC heels because I have a wide forefoot, and a 38/38.5/39 in european sizes. I got these in an 8, and there is about an inch of wood behind my heel. But I was afraid to size down b/c of my smallish bunions so I wore them anyway. They felt so clunky, but I got more compliments than I have ever gotten with any shoe ever. (Of course, my main company is other stay at home moms.) I ended up reordering in a 7, and they are loads better, because there is not the weight of that extra shoe in the back to clunk around. I'm keeping both as my 10 year old daughter already has feet larger than mine, and I've ordered the gingham in a 7.

  10. Bow shoulder top in stripe - I'm usually a 0 in this type of top but the store only had 00 so I tried it. It fit but was still pretty swingy/big around the hip area but not in a good way on me. It tented out around the bottom on me so I passed on it although I had been excited to try it.

Pintucked midi in morning floral- I took my usual size and it's a tad snug at the waist but still comfortable. It looked best in my usual size as it fits me high on the waist and the proportions look better. A size up was too big around the hips. If you are a more straight shape you may want to size up because of the waist. I think it's well done, with lovely spring colours and the length is good on me at 5'7". I like that it has pockets. the pockets and the pleating lay flat so they don't add weight. I'm happy with this purchase.

Ballet tee- I had to size down to Xs from my usual tee size of small as the armholes were far too big in my usual small. It's still not as slim as I thought (the painter tee is slimmer). I ended up buying one because of the great colours.

  11. As posted under the Madewell 30% off thread, reviews from my recent Madewell order.

belfast tank in black--very lightweight, With a "bra lette" as the kids call them, will be fine. I like the shape and weight, as other reviewers on the site posted, it's a little shorter than I thought but to do a little tuck will actually be perfect. This is the type of shirt I'd get in multiple patterns/colors. So great for summer.

Stockton culottes in black--great swingy shape. Got the 0 and they fit a little loose, kind of like the 0 in the Gazebo pants. They didn't come in 00 but that would have been too tight anyway. Length is just above the ankle on me, which is perfect. The pockets show through the fabric kind of funny but I can try to steam them flat. They're a little heavier than I thought but not as heavy as a crepe. The shape is very flattering. Flat front trouser style but wide leg. I like them.

Rivet and thread button front boy jean. These fit well but will stretch a bit since they're all cotton. The rise is high but not unflattering. I feel like the ankle should be a little more tapered to be perfect but I'll try them with different shoes. I got my usual jcrew jean size, 25.

Cruiser straight jeans in two sizes, 25 and 26. The fit of these is similar to the Point sur jeans in Orran wash, but a slighter lighter weight denim. My regular size fits just perfectly but they will stretch. They're cute and half the price of the rivet and thread button front, without the fun detail of the buttons in a lighter weight denim. I feel like the length and cut of the ankle isn't necessarily ideal for me but otherwise
They're really nice and well proportioned. Again I'll try them with different shoes. I like that they're all cotton.

Catarina cover up tunic in totem stripe. I got XS and actually could have sized up for a looser slouchy fit. From the online pics I thought the fabric would have more texture, it's a screen print (or similar). I think it's fine for a cover up and will also look cute slightly tucked into denim cut offs. Probably if I saw this in person I might not have gotten it, but it's actually cute, just a little more boho than my usual.

Modern linen tank in black and heather slate-- love these. Hope they wash well, I'll probably wash on delicate or hand wash. This is the type of tank I'd buy 3 in each color.

Linen pull on shorts, these are super comfy, with a fit like jogging shorts but a nicer fabric. Jcrew had a bunch of similar ones last year. I don't necessarily think they are the most stylish or fashionable shorts but easy to wear with sandals or cute sneakers.
