J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Tried on the kitten suede pumps, still need to go down 1/2 a size. lots of great new arrivals, but they are oh so short. Loving the ruffle sleeveless tops, fit true to size

    1. No kidding about the popbacks, including the Parker ankle boots that I bought last February (I paid less than the current sale price). Not my best purchase but not a disaster.

The cashmere hat in warm sand is terrific - now net $24 with this promo. It's a men's hat but they're selling it in the women's section too. I bought it for my husband and he LOVES it - runs big.

Amazing that items from the most recent rollout are now on sale - grosgrain ribbon top and retro floral top.

We need to create an award of some kind for anyone who can style the embellished bucket hat without looking completely ridiculous.

  3. I tried on and loved the skinny stretch cargo pants. There are two pairs of cargo pants in the latest roll out. I tried both and the skinny stretch ones (B8708) are my preference. They are really soft and stretchy without being saggy and baggy. They feel almost like a brushed cotton. And they don't have huge pockets on the bum (there are pocket flaps, but not giant pockets). I sized down, but only because I'm kind of in between sizes and they have a lot of stretch. The size bigger would have worked, too.

    1. I also bought the skinny stretch ones with the flap back pockets. I bought my usual toothpick jeans size and they fit really well. I bought them in navy and i think they'll be a great wardrobe staple for me. ... once the weather warms up that is. :/

  5. Love the chateau parka! It's so flattering yet roomy enough for bulky layers underneath. I stuck with my normal size to allow for extra layering but I can see why many opted to size down. My only gripe is that I wish it had side slant pockets so I can stick my hands in the pockets and the fur hood sheds a little on dark colors. I got it in black and the acorn popped back in my size so I ordered that as well but haven't received it yet. I haven't worn the jacket out yet but it seems like it will warm enough for some of the worst days of Chicago weather although I typically opt for full length coats when we hit the teens and sub zero.

  6. I received the Factory Jacquard pant in navy/fresh berry yesterday. I'm hoping to get a review up on my blog soon but I won't be able to until I can take photos in daylight (which likely won't be until the weekend) so here's my initial review:
The pants themselves are black, unlined (I believe poly/cotton - they feel satiny) and the design is stitched in berry and a medium blue color - there is no navy to be found in these pants, so I'm confused why the color is billed as navy/berry. That being said, I'm 5'8" and curvy, and a 12/14 in pants due to my hips...I couldn't even get the 12 up my leg in these pants, so I ordered a 14 and 16 to try. The 14 just fits...fine in my waist but tight in my hips/thighs, and the 16 gapes considerably in my waist, but fits ok on my legs. I have to play around with a belt to see how these work since they really aren't a perfect fit...I do love the colors, I wear a lot of pink, these will be a great addition to my wardrobe if I can make them work. The inseam on these is 26" which is shorter than I like, there's at least two inches of fabric in the seam so I may think about having them taken down (and at that point I might as well have the waist taken in). Have to decide if the alterations is worth the price - they netted about $45 with yesterday's flash sale.

So I would say you probably need to size up one if you're more straight, maybe two sizes depending on your figure. But I just have big hip so two sizes is what (half) worked for me. HTH someone!

I also received the crystal foliage necklace on Friday which you can see on my Instagram here. This necklace was so much prettier in person than online - it is a mixture of lavendar, pinks, beige and burgundy - an unexpected color combination but I already have a lot of pairing ideas in my head. I already want the mint/navy/yellow one that was just released.

Lastly, I posted last week, but in case you missed it, some of the new arrivals including the striped midi, sequin sleeve sweater, eyelet sweatshirt here

    1. Thanks for he review. I ordered a size up. I hope they work on my pear shape. Were they machine washable in your opinion?

  7. On another note, has anyone tried the Collection pleated cropped pants (item B6329)? They caught my eye in the sale section this morning...they're practically sold out and have some really good reviews. TIA :)

  8. Has anyone tried the Factory lightweight tunic sweater? I know the retail version was widely panned due to pilling issues but I am very interested in the vibrant flame colorway (cannot have enough of that shade in my life!) & was hoping the pilling wouldn't be an issue since the Factory version is 100% cotton.

  9. Last week I ordered a few items from the retail sale: the sateen toothpicks (A9583) in ponderosa pine, the tassel top in black, and the oversize stripe shirt. I found the toothpicks to be tts to a bit snug, but still like them enough to keep. I also liked the material very much and found it to be soft and not at all shiny as the name would suggest. I liked the oversize stripe tee (B5902) at first (particularly based on color) but in the end have decided to return it based on the stretch of the fabric and the cling factor. I liked the tassel top (B5046) more than I expected, but do find it TTS to a bit big. I think the black will be lovely with white jeans in the summer. I am wondering how to deal with the low cut neckline though as it is quite plunging.

Also, over the last month or so I have tried six variations of the toothpicks. I am finally a bit frustrated with the discrepancy of the fit of these jeans. However, I must say when they do fit I love them. The Miller's are my absolute favorite, so if you know of another pair that fit like them, please let me know!!

I just posted a review of them along with my budget post on my blog here: http://hersoulsociety.blogspot.com/2015/02/style-budget-month-2-february.html

    Thanks,
    Lindsey

  11. Hi, I'm wearing Pixies and the zipper fell off the track. How do I fix this/can it be fixed? The zip is still attached to one side but not the other. Thanks!!

  12. is the j. crew website down for anyone else? :(

  13. Took a shot and ordered the Convertible Hooded Jacket. Item B6791 last week. At the time it was listed in the %50 off category. Well worth it for next fall as an alternative to a denim or leather jacket.
IRL the black and blue contrast isn't as vivid as pictured, nor is the fabric as shiny. The blue is more of a dark navy.
Sized down as some of the website reviews suggested. Took a size medium...(I'm pear shaped. In the chest area I'm still pre-pregnancy size 8, but need to size up to a 10/12 for upper arms. Was a size 10 in bottoms now take size 12/14 for post pregnancy hips and extra inches in midsection)
Not necessarily boxy as described but rather roomy around the upper chest and arm hole areas. The sleeves fit normal over a regular long sleeve tee and have zippers at the cuffs. The waist area was a bit off and felt tapered compared to the extra room in the chest are, but maybe that's just my midsection issues...it has bidirectional zippers which I do plan on making use of to compensate.
In comparison to other outerwear I own, I would say it fits similar to the excursion vest or down town field jacket from fall '13.

  14. A review of the Boy Shirt in Jet-Set Geo I think that this is a gorgeous print!

    1. I love that print! I want to get the jet set geo shell but they're excluding it from promo (for now).

    2. Julie: I agree, the print is gorgeous! I wanted the shell too, but the taupe color does not look good against my skin.

    3. I tried the boyshirt and had to go up one size,as my regular size was tight in the back.
I also tried the shell and found it TTS,

    4. Ina, that is interesting. I took my normal size in the Boy Shirt.

    5. Rynetta,i have very broad shoulders and work out, that might be the reason why.

    6. It was TTS for me but gaped a teeny bit at the chest. Fit is more perfect shirt than boy shirt, IMO, in that it seems to be more tailored and less boxy than the boy shirt.

  18. Hi all - I wanted to try a bunch of things from the new arrivals before they went to promo/promo + %/final sale.

Leather cuff (C4985) - nice size, fit my small wrist well and I liked the color. However, there was a “bump” under the leather right on the middle front of the cuff that was distracting. I think this may be one of these items you may want to track down in a store so you can look at it before buying.

Chunky trim open cardigan (C2915) - this is pretty much the giant shawl-collar cardigan from winter in a shorter, cotton version. If the XS/S in that was too big for you, this one will also be too big. The cotton was thick, but the shawl collar was a bit awkward (would probably need to be rolled twice) and the bottom hem flowed away from the body, making me think it was probably pinned quite a bit on the model. The ivory was nice, a little bit yellower than the online pic.

Rolled-sleeve pocket tee in stripe (C1446) - How do I not have a black and white striped short-sleeve tee? This one is just fine, fit TTS.

Eyelet panel sweater (C3629) - Cute idea, like that it was WHITE white. I didn’t find it to be too short, but I’m short-waisted. I have long arms and the sleeves hit at an odd place for me and looked better rolled. The cotton felt a bit plasticky. I worry that it wouldn’t be able to be laundered. Took my usual S.

Lookout high-rise jean in Grady wash (B7080) - These were very stretchy and comfy, but I was a little nervous at the fabric blend and how it would held up to being washed. Again, the IRL color is not true to the website image - the faded parts of this wash had a more dingy, yellowed color to them. My usual 28R was very comfortable but I probably could’ve also sized down. As my other Lookout jeans were pilling, I’m hesitant about owning any more.

Hello tee (C2422) - Cute, slightly slouchy in S but I wouldn’t size down. Felt a little more substantial than other JC graphic tees I’ve tried in the past.

There you have it. Nothing worth FP (or even FP + 25% IMO), but some cute pieces in there and improvements over the past couple of seasons. By the time it’s warm enough here to wear them, I think I’ll be able to catch some on a better discount than the current promotion.

  19. Callista Gladiator Sandals (#b7892) in black. These are great!! The leather was so soft when I put them on, so I looked at the bottom and they are made in Italy. Very, very comfortable. The entry is a back buckle, which is a little bit awkward to do, but not bad once you see that you have to overlap the wide leather parts behind the buckle. Worth the trouble! I bought my normal J. Crew shoe size, although I usually go down a half size in J. Crew sandals, but I think these are the right size for me. My feet are wide and there are so many straps that I thought a half size down would cut into my feet. I think I could have done the half size down, though, because the straps are so soft (but keep in mind I haven't worn them anywhere yet).

  21. Relaxed Merino Wool Sweater: I ordered this in an XS, color lemon. The yellow is lovely. The sweater itself runs big if you are petite. I'm 5'2" and 114 lbs, and I wear an XS in the Tippi. Way too long through the torso. Very voluminous through the body. And it's extremely lightweight -- too light for my taste, as I could almost see my nude bra through the material. Sizing down may help, as the arms weren't tight, but I'm not sure if I'd still like the fit. I did expect it to be relaxed and slouchy, but it just looked sloppy on me. Better for taller gals!
