First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for their well-wishes on my trip to Paris. It means a lot to me to know I have such a supportive JCA-base. :) The trip itself was amazing (the weather was great, the sites were lovely, the food was fantastic!) Unfortunately, this time around I am having a hard time re-adjusting back home (in terms of jet-lag, which I am still oddly recovering from).As for regular street trends in Paris, I think the U.S. has finally caught up! I did not see anything that we are currently not embracing. (I hope what I wrote just now makes sense.)
So what is popular (from my viewpoint): Skinny jeans, blazers, and scarves were the norm. And how they wrap the scarves... like performance art! Every once in awhile I would notice a Parisian sporting a pair of high heels (and work them so well it made me jealous!). But black ballet flats or sneakers (like Bensimons or Converse) would be more commonly seen among the younger ladies. (This could also be because I was in the more touristy spots that involved walking). The other thing I would mention is dresses, well what was worn with them. Black tights with dresses were common. But so was wearing a jacket (like a denim jacket) over a dress. All the young ladies rocked that look.
The only disappointing "trend" I saw (and I would not necessarily call it a "trend" since it was seen on just 2 women, who I knew were not from Paris), was the Snookie poof hair-style. It was bizarre seeing that hair-style on anyone who is not Snookie (from MTV's Jersey Shore).
Lastly, I did not notice any J.Crew. Last year I spotted it on travelers a few times, but not this time around. But don't worry, I wore my J.Crew and wore it proudly!

Thanks Alexis I can totally picture it! I love scarves but am also intimidated by them. I know I don't wear them in all the imaginative ways they can be worn, I wish I did!

ReplyDeleteI think the majority of women in Paris look pretty scruffy nowadays, a stylish women is a rare sight these days, when I first went, over 20 years ago it was so different. But then Colette is the big store that sets the dressing trend amongst the younger generation and that's just not my style at all.
I love your observations Alexis! I live in Europe and have noticed much of the same. I live in Germany in a town with ZERO tourists, which has a much preppier vibe than Paris although still distinctly European.. Her I still see tons of scarves, layers, skinny jeans, military, and black. I am also starting to see more and more people accessorizing with belt over cardigans and dresses, which I think is a newer trend in Europe. What I don't see a lot of are bright colors, sky high heels, ruffles, or sequins. Most of which are just too difficult to wear for the European lifestyle in which you walk every where and are constantly exposed to the elements.
ReplyDeleteScarfs are THE accessory here. It took me a long time to learn how to wear a scarf like they do in Europe, but once I mastered it I found that it has transformed the way I wear clothes. The trick is to have a wide scarf and to tuck the ends into the scarf itself. This gives a lovely draping effect. No need to be intimidated. It just takes a little practice.
i agree with amy.i also live in germany and your always have to deal with the elements,since you walk everywhere.i still wear heels,but it takes practice walking cobblestones with heels.

ReplyDeleteI lived in England for half a year in my teens but never got a chance to visit France. It sounds wonderful and it's always interesting what people are wearing in other countries.
The Snookie hair style thing is too funny!
LMAO at the Snookie bump-it making it to the land of Euro. I wonder if her fake tan and spandex-wearing ways will also cross the ocean?

Sounds divine, Alexis! I love scarves, too. They instantly transform an otherwise staid outfit. For year I thought of them as something more (ahem) mature ladies would wear, so I'm very happy to see them for those of us who aren't quite mature.

ReplyDeleteThere's good 80's and there's bad 80's...Pouffy hair is baaaad 80's. Too funny you spotted that in Paris, of all places. I was there last Fall and didn't notice a distinct "look", while in Netherlands the week before, there was def. a "Dutch look" going on (utilitarian coat, funky scarf, cute skirt with tights and cool boots). Sounds like you had a great time!
