J.Crew's New January Catalog Online To View {yey!}

A big "thanks!" to Anon at 7:55 AM (in this post) who let us know that J.Crew's new January catalog is available online to view (click here).

Once again, Jenna Lyons has offered her picks (of "must have" new items) in the new catalog, as shown in the image below. Jenna mentions that "these are a few of my favorites for the season... new neutrals inspired by soft makeup palettes- nudes, pinks and champagne- and pops of bright, happy color (with just a bit of shimmer)." I am all for neutrals with a pop of bright color! :)

What are your favorite new items in the upcoming collection? What items are you surprised to see? Have you already seen some of these items at your local brick and mortar (B&M) stores? Do you agree with Jenna Lyons color palette for the upcoming collection? :)

  1. Something odd - I ordered a waitlisted Cashmere Swing Sweater (11086) from the New Arrivals section at $188 a couple of days ago, and today the same sweater is $158. It's strange because it's not marked as a sale or promotion - the original price just went down. And the thing isn't even scheduled to ship until late January. Why would they change the original price of a new item so quickly?

  2. Anon at 8:33 AM: That is weird about the price change. Not sure why that happen- but at least the price change is in the customer's favor. :) I might call CS to confirm that you are paying the new (lower) regular price. :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. That is happening quite frequently now, call CS to make sure you get the price adjustment when it ships it is not automatically done, and you have to follow up to make sure it Support Services does it for you. This happened to me last month.

I figure J Crew is trying to stimulate sales in a bad economy.

I like the new colors but nothing makes me want to buy, I wait until next month. This is my New Years resolution cut back on JC stuff.

  4. I actually see several new pieces in the catalog I would really like to have...I really LOVE the new color palette, too! :)

  5. This catalog is a big disappointment. I don't like the colors at all and I am a fan of pastels but not liking any of the styles either. This is a pass for me. Huge disappointment but after 7 years of going crazy for JCrew now it is maybe time for a break? Maybe the real spring catalog with have some items for me:)

  6. Casual-crew, that is a great resolution. I'm going to do the same. Normally I would say I'm going to cut back on my spending, but looking back, I spent more on JC than anything else (by far) - so cutting back on JC is more direct. :)

  7. I like items in the catalog. I'm also glad I purchased some of the neutral color items on sale (pink, browns, champagne, etc.).

I like the belted rain jacket. My B&M has the jacket in khaki & navy but I will wait for a sale. $178 is too much for what it is & it's the type of item I could find elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm having a bit of trouble telling what is new and what isn't,the way it is all blended in on the pages. Am I missing something? I don't see new things listed in new arrivals either. Help!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I see several items that I like, and I also like a lot of the colors! Can't wait to see these IRL!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've seen a few of the pieces in my local J. Crew already; I am totally in love with the peachy pinks and papaya colors. ♥

    ReplyDelete
  11. I actually already got the trench off of eBay for $69! It's terribly cute, more flattering than last summer's Tuesday trench (and also seems more durable upon first glance) but is in no way worth $178, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Finally neutral colors! I am going to love this new season.

    ReplyDelete
  13. JCrew site down again...

    ReplyDelete
  14. They have been doing that price thing for a while. I bought the gayle ruffle trench last year when it was 250. A couple weeks later the price changed to 198... not on sale, the price just changed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. As far as Jenna's picks:

I tried on the safari jacket last Friday and it's cute, but they didn't have my size.

The t-shirts are okay, nothing special.

Those pants looked like they needed a good ironing. Really ratty looking.

They also have the rubber flip flops in the store with the flower in many more colors than the website. Cute!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love the new catalog- both colors and styles!! Excited...but not for my bank account. :/

    ReplyDelete
  17. The shaker knit sweater on page 33 is awful. I had a sweater EXACTLY like this in HS...it looks really dated in my opinion. I would not buy it.

Nothing special that I have to have and/or couldn't wait for a sale...

The one cami top looks Egyptian style to me...I wouldn't wear it if you paid me....

    ReplyDelete
  18. I see only one item in the catalog that I really love (the cashmere Jackie in tropical aqua), so I will be saving my money for later. Overall, I think the collection is very bland.

I am very fair skinned with reddish brown hair, so these pastels and light neutrals are terrible on me. Also, few of the items seem to have any of the special touches that make me love J Crew.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It doesn't look like all of these outfits are online yet...The online selection looks almost the same as what I saw in late November/December!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ha ha! One of Jenna's picks is the crinkled up pants.

    Item # 99707

    ReplyDelete
  21. I am loving the following from the new catalog:

Lattice Cami in amber & light pewter

    Cashmere Jackie in crisp celery

Ingrid fabric peep toes in key lime & navy

Polka dot twist tank in black

Cotton Cady Sydney dress in fresh mint & clover

Satin rosette metallic capri sandal in cool graphite

    Chunky handknit cardigan in champagne

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ohhhh...I love almost everything in this new catalog, especially the colors. It makes me want to go on vacation!! My cc is already screaming at me! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I like:

    Bistro pant

    Lattice tank

    Cotton-linen Aubrey jacket

    Jersey bikini

I'm not crazy about all the pastels, although some are nice and neutrals are staples for me. There was a season a few years back where everything was muted tones and I barely bought anything from JCrew. Or from anywhere for that matter.

Whoever was saying the items are not on the website yet, just click on the photo in the catalogue and the product pages come up.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nothing comes up when I click the catalog. This happened to me before as well. I could see the front of the catalogs to choose which I wanted to view but after I clicked it, all I get is the page numbers and no pictures. Strange. With this catalog I see the drawing of the front cover, click it and only see the page numbers but nothing shows up otherwise.

Anyone else have this issue? What should I do?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anon @8:33
I've noticed price changes before too and thought it was odd. E.g., the original price of the nola sweater was listed in the catalog as $218, but then I noticed it online listed as $198.... I agree with Alexis that you should call and make sure you get the reduced price!

    ReplyDelete
  26. bug pin: That happens to me when i use Firefox on the Mac. I can see the catalog just fine in Safari.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Anon @ 1019 who posted about the chunky sweater. This is the kind of stuff I made when was learning how to knit. Definitely would not buy, it looks cheap.

Thanks--I switched from Firefox to Explorer and it is working. Now I can check it out. Thanks!

  29. I like the colors a lot - I am a very black/white/brown/or pastels kind of girl..a little scared of the BRIGHT colors!

As for styles, there were a few things I liked, but overall not as excited about this catalog vs. some in the past. I think a lot (but not all) of these pieces remind me of gap/banana/etc, which is not BAD (love those storeS)...but maybe not worth the price at jcrew. Just my opinion. Will have to reevaluate when my B&M is full of all new arrivals!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The short trench is cute, but if you wear it when it is actually raining it won't be much help because it's too short. Must be a case of form over function. Those giraffe-print shorts are really cute! Might have to get those.

I have the ruffle favorite-fit tank and it is nice. They have been around for a while and it looks like the colors are the same too.

I love the stone-bead ribbon necklace in glazed pecan. Reminds me of the old "Tiger eye" rings that men used to wear. Wish I could wear that color, it wouldn't look nice with my fair, pinkish complexion though. Maybe it will come out later in a pink or coral color.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Has anyone else noted that in the catalog pages they are noting the starting prices of the items and that they are lower than they have been in the past? (i.e., suede ballet flats starting at $98 as opposed to $138-$148 in the past). Now granted it's still about a hundred dollars, however, with a number of items in the catalog I noticed that the price was a tad lower than in the past (a pink/reddish dress at about $98 when in the past it would have been retailed at about $118 or $128). Anyway, just something that caught my eye.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm loving the new stuff. The colors are gorgeous. I especially like the new trench!

I don't like that the Editor bag has that horrible plastic chain on it. Why do they think that chain is a good idea?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Is today when the rewards points end (meaning we get reward cards sonn!)? I just noticed almost all my points have "disappeared". Anyone else notice this?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Website is down....AGAIN! What else is new????

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just thought of something....maybe the website is down because they are adding a new discount code. HAR HAR HAR!!! Sorry....I couldn't help myself!

    ReplyDelete
  36. You almost kind of expect the site to crash every once in a while. *sigh*

  37. Hi! I saw some long sleeve black victoria shirts at the Indianapolis store 317-848-2739 as well as some peach colored l/s cotton shirts with ruffled collars. Also I saw 3 liberty print shirts in what I believe is the deep cosmo or bright rhubarb): 1 size 12 and 2 in size 14 if anyone is into the liberty print thing.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Off topic, but if anyone sees the wide patent belt in any color other than black in medium/long - I am desperately seeking it! TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Fun to see a new catalog and not the same ol for a change. Like the new models-nice change. Esp the gal on pg. 41-very pretty.
As always--I love how they so uniquely style the models. It's fun to use these catalogs for a new approach to wearing things as others have mentioned.

Overall this catalog is really not doing much for me. I will generally look dead in many of these colors. And the greens/yellows such as Chartreuse and citron shades just don't look good on many people. I am actually thrilled as I have MORE than enough clothes already and tend to do more damage on Fall/Winter so kinda glad after the $ spent this year. Might add a specialty piece for spice but that's about it.

Things that stand out for me are:

The halter on page 21 that doesn't show up yet when clicked looks very pretty.

Love the pattern on the Ingrid peeptoe heels page 23 but the kitten heel doesn't excite me. Prob more comfy than others, though.

Cannot and will not buy anymore fly away front (read Aubrey) or double breasted jackets. They lack functionality IMO. You don't see what's underneath so you cannot change up the look as much and they become very noticeable with repeated wearing. Maybe I lack the ability to be diverse/unique;)

Fun ballet flats as always on p.27 & price is better;)

I am no longer a fan of the chiffon pleated cardi and agree with others about the chunky cardi.
I agree the trench is cute but too much $ right now. It will come down and I don't need it.

Wanna love the new colors of jackie but I either have them already or that aquamarine just makes me think of scrubs and I cannot do it.

Saw those ruffle favorite tanks p.40 at the store $34.50--they are overpriced but on sale online for $19.50 they would make yet another ("yet another" is code for..do I really need MORE) cute addition for layering. Haven't tried on for fit though. Also, when you click that is not the right tank.

Flip flops with flower are cute but not $78 cute.

Like how they are stacking the clothing to show what would look good together and showing bathing suits with bottoms accordingly. Wish they would put all options for bathing suit bottoms but perhaps they are working on this.

The model on p.58 needs more Christmas cookies.

How many times are they gonna use those same suiting pics with the merino trois tank etc.? Blah, please stop! That tank was down to $5.99-LOL!

Crewcuts got the short end of the stick with only one page!

There's my lengthy review~HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  40. I believe the chain belt on the editor bag would be uncomfortable. On the sean bag, a small bag, it would be ok..but with the size of the editor bag, I think, it would make it uncomfortable to wear with the chain. I have a prada bag from many years ago which has a similar chain link handle, and the bag is big. I found the chain belt somehow does not handle a heavy bag.

    sorry about the long post.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love the cardigan (#11) - it would look perfect at the pool. And I love the flip flops, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bugpin: The model on p. 41 & 58 are one and the same. ;P No doubt she is pretty but does need to eat some Christmas ham, turkey, cookie, somethin'!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I tried on a couple new items in the store last night. The camp shirt in shell, tts and flattering cut. I will go back for this.
The Kya cami did not fit as big as most jc camis but I would still size down one to control the billowy waist. The u neckline was way too low and revealing on me.
The new trench-the cut was not overly flattering or cute and the shoulders were uncomfortable.
I saw the new prints, tunics, and tees, was not crazy about any of them.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I mean, "is". IS one and the same. D'oh. My English teacher would clobber me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think the pastel blues, pinks and greens are pretty, but I could do without the yellow giraffe print (ick) and all the beige/khaki/light brown...totally washes me out. :(

Questionable item alert: $900 yellow sequin flapper dress.

  46. FINALLY - colors that don't make a professional woman look like she's wearing Garanimals.

FINALLY - colors and chic styles I can actually wear to court and be taken seriously in.

  47. Drewablank-
Don't worry about correcting yourself! I am pretty sure others would agree that many aficionadas cannot help but correct themselves as they cannot stand seeing something grammatically incorrect. I say.. save it:) We don't know who you are, we aren't grading/judging you and we still get the message;) I guess there are a lot of teachers posting on here so maybe that's the reason:)

As for he model--gorgeous face and of course the body in clothes is fine but clothes off it borders on starvation.

  48. Anon 11:35 am,

This is a deliberate strategy to increase sell through at full price. It was discussed in the 3Q conference call and ballet flats were one of the examples given:

    Millard S. Drexler

Tell me what you wanted me to respond to again?

    Brian Tunick - J.P. Morgan

We watched you the last couple of years. Your gross margins have been up I think 700 basis points. You’ve run a very full priced business. Now what happens going into 2009 is a lot of your customers are probably looking for the additional 50% off clearance you’ve been offering them. How do you reposition J. Crew to get back to a full priced business going forward?

    Millard S. Drexler

I think that’s a really good question. I think the entire industry and the world is in the same position. Frankly it’s a couple of things here and I wish I had a crystal ball on that. I think the reset button has been pushed on value in America; homes, cars, gasoline, clothing, apparel, stocks, and everything else. So I think it’s hard to figure out when we come out of this. It is all about inventory management. In spite of my last discussion I totally agree with what was said. It’s all about inventory management and the quality of the goods.

I will tell you what we’re doing without talking too much to our competitors. There’s clearly an opportunity. It’s interesting. Believe me, none of us is having fun running businesses today I don’t care what the business is. But I think what’s going on is a lot of this is playing into our hand in terms of our opening price points where in fact they were at some times higher than we’d like.

We’re going out with categories this spring; it’s too late now because it is what it is; and I think consumers are driving it and determining retail. But our ballet flat category will start at under $100 for the first time ever. We’re doing T shirt businesses at prices with good margin by the way and margin’s a function of sell-through along with high initial margin. So in some cases, this is all merchandising, you might take a point or two off initial if you can get better sell-throughs.

We’re looking at the competition now in that regard too. It’s not a hope because hope is not a business strategy but it’s a fact that when you have better goods at value, customers always recognize that. Having been through this a couple of times before in my career, the right goods win out if you’re managing the inventories correctly. So I don’t want anyone to think that’s not a critical issue here. We’ve all been caught by this tailspin of consumers not shopping other than for sales but we have key categories like ballet flats.

We’re weighting our inventory differently than we have this past fall. You’ll see inventory weighted towards more friendly price points so that it kind of averages out. And it’s all again dependent upon the inventory and the sell-through. But I think the reset button’s been pushed on price and I think we’re all dealing with where that will end up.

However as I look at the landscape out there I really like where we are and I’m not making any false promises because who knows, but I just like the fact that we have great integrity and we maintain great integrity in our product mix and assortment, in our service, in our catalogs and online. And I think the customers will have less choice. If they are price customers in fact in any business, there’s always going to be a lower price.

But I think that’s going to be really the billion dollar question for the retailers: When will they trust your prices again?

  49. I really like the lattice tank, disappointed it's catalog/online only. I also like the lattice print Camilla dress, and again it's an c/o only!!! I am still waiting for the polka dot cherie to be reduced (another c/o!!). I just can't stomach paying full price at JC anymore- especially when I have to pay shipping for items that I can't even buy at my B&M! I really am annoyed JC does this Catalog/online only with SO MANY items. I really feel it just a way for them to generate more revenue.

  50. If anyone is looking for a candy tee, Charleston, SC, had tons of them. They also had several olive velvet ecoles and pink droppy flower jacket. :) Several lea cardigans, too, in black, navy, and gray. Many salina flats in black patent in size 7 and 7 1/2, one alyssia black patent flat in 7 1/2, and some heels in mainly large sizes.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really love the color palette. I got plenty of brights last year, so I need some more "tame" colors to expand my wardrobe a bit. I'm also in love with the makeup look the models are wearing.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I ordered the Italian Jersey swimsuit on the 30% promo (was that JINGLE?) and it is totally fabulous. I usually buy J.Crew swimwear when it is on sale but the last two suits I wanted never made it to sale and 30% was a great deal. I wish they would have more of the promos that apply to your entire order and not just the sale items.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The new stuff is on-line now too, still some crazy prices for a canvas tote bag, $98.00 stretch City Fit pants. It seems that they have less items than January last year.

  54. The new catalog is FANTASTIC!
I really adore the new colors and styles. I can count on J.Crew to have the best colors really and I love that.

  55. This is a bit off topic, but I was just shopping the final sale online and wanted to buy the padded twist front bandeau swim top in sweet peach. couldn't find a sweet peach bottom in my size, but did find one in sweet orange. they looked like EXACTLY the same color. I took the risk and ordered them...does anyone know if they are the same color??

I also bought the Kya cami in white. Very cute on, but as one other Aficionada mentioned, the slit in the front does go quite low.

  69. I really like the pink page background on Jenna's picks page and it makes me want to buy everything on the page. This is so strange. I think this is also the reason why I bought some of the collection items. They looked so good on pink background. J.Crew has very good photographers and graphic designers, they make me want to buy stuff.

  74. I *love* the pastels, I think they're absolutely gorgeous. Also liking the sandals (although absolutely no padding and look horrendous to walk on for a distance), vneck cardi, swimwear (as usual), trench, jewlery.

As usual, I think the bags (editor) and chinos are priced much more than they are worth.

What's appropriate/not appropriate to wear to the office? I'm a law student so I'm just learning to figure this stuff out. It's pretty clear what I can and can't wear to court, but I'm starting an internship at an attorney general's office, and I'm sure there's GOT to be more than suits that are appropriate for a female attorney to wear.

  90. anon@5:05, it really depends on what area of the country you are and what the custom of the business/firm/organization is. There are firms in California where it's 100% true casual (i.e. shorts and sweats are acceptable) except for court and presumably client meetings. On the other hand, if you work for in the office of the district attorney or public defender, it's a suit every day b/c of the court appearances.

If you don't have to wear a suit every day, I think there's a lot of latitude - nice slacks, sweaters and cardis, dresses and skirts (of appropriate cut and length) all generally go a long way. Sometimes cords and khakis are acceptable - other times they are not. Sometimes open-toe shoes are acceptable, sometimes not. It just depends, and you should always err on the side of conservative until or unless you know otherwise.

  91. ceecee, try calling Charleston, SC, tomorrow morning (they closed at 5 today). I know they had some, but I can't remember what sizes. Good luck!

PS - My favorite sa told me that the giraffe top is sold out in the NY stores. He has a friend who lives there who passed that info on. My b&m didn't have it and it's not for me, but others must love it. Also, I bought a pretty blouse that's not in the catalog that comes in the tea rose color, which is really pretty. It's short sleeved, and the sleeves are twisted. I know that doesn't make sense, but that's the only way to describe it. I had to size down, too. It also comes in navy and ivory, it's lined, and it's washable. :)

I also LOVE the quartz chinos - such a pretty pink! I don't like the polka dot skirt - it's way too flouncy for me.

  96. Seeing these new tees reminded me of something. A few weeks ago I went to the store and the Safari tees were on display with a cardigan (I can't remember which one). The cardigan covered some of the letters and the tee read "FART". Of course I had to remove the cardigan to see what this is about and I discovered that "FART" was in fact "SAFARI" but the I looked a bit like a "T" :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. P.S. I am SO happy they are offering us these pastel colors. They emphasize that their bright colors are what distinguishes JCrew from other retailers (which I appreciate)-but then their bright colored items are the first ones to go on sale (cashmere jackie cardigan for example)

Can't wait to shop again next year ;)

  98. I really like the softness of the pastels/prints! They won't look good on my pasty skin now, but once I get a little color in the Spring (and when everything is on sale!) they'll look great.

What's going on with the Editor Bag?? It looks like it has an anchor chain attached to it. Other than that I'm loving the Spring sneak peek.

  99. New Attorney at 5:05 -

I, too, am an attorney in California. I agree with what *most* of A said at 5:21.

I am a former full-time litigator. I'm now a General Counsel, so I don't appear in court all the time anymore - and I'm not even a full-time litigator anymore. *However*, I have appeared in court recently. And, even then I did not see anything but pantsuits, skirt suits and the occasional shirt dress with a jacket or blazer over it.

In the office, the only place I *ever* saw sweats was when I worked in-house for a dotcom, which tended to be *extremely* liberal in its dress policy. However, I agree with A that khakis, chinos, cardigans over shirts, etc., seemed to be acceptable even in the large law firms (and, I'm guessing, therefore in the DA's office) for the most part. However, you still want to look polished and not like a little girl (see below).

In-house departments tend to be more liberal, because they don't require that uniform of a navy or black suit, white shirt and red tie everyday. Even then, I find a lot of the loud, in-your-face colors and ruffles and billowing everywhere on some JCrew products and some of the bright, floral, fabric pumps with bows are a little too much, even for an in-house setting. (Sometimes, I ask myself if I would trust a Financial Advisor or Investment Banker who showed up to a meeting wearing these items. I think not, but that's me.)

    ReplyDelete
  100. I was at the B&M today and tried on the Aubrey jacket in a 0R. The orange is a very lovely orange. I liked how they updated the back so instead of the big cross in the back where the fabric comes together, there's a more refined yoke.

It fits TTS, but...buttoned or unbuttoned I felt like it made me look pregnant. (The SA said that comment was very common.) There's not enough of an a line or drape for it to swing away properly. In the end it did not end up coming home with me.

I'm still not liking the favorite fits...they were so much better a year or so ago when they were more fitted in the hip/thigh area to give more of a nice shaped leg.

There's so few new items in right now. I hope they get more in soon!

    ReplyDelete
  101. SanFranciscoCA, I did the same thing when I saw the Safari tee at the B&M!!! Glad to know I wasn't the only one :) Maybe we should email JC to tell them our reactions...lol

I have a J Crew outlet about an hour away from me. I haven't been to the outlet mall since J Crew has been there. Is it worth the drive or should I just visit my local B&M that's half the distance? What can I expect to find at the outlet now?

  103. Anon law student~

I agree with the other attorneys that commented, it really does depend on the workplace environment. I am an attorney working in the state legislature, so I am NEVER in court, but during session I spend almost all day in meetings with lobbyists or in the Senate chambers, so I do have to wear business casual. I will say that hardly any of the female attorneys wear straight up suits every day. I usually go for skirts, trousers, dresses, blouses, and cardigan combos.

However, when in the courtroom, I feel it is most appropriate to wear some kind of suit. I don't subscribe to the belief that it has to be a basic black/navy suit, but I feel like attire in the courtroom does need to be more muted and conservative. Not to go off on a tangent, but one public defender ALWAYS wore knee high leather boots and mini skirts to court...and let's just say she didn't get taken very seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  104. OT: Has any one else had problems with the double-strand flower necklace? Its the one with the grey glass beads.

The first one broke the second time I wore it. The strand broke just below the clasp.

The second one broke the third time I wore it. This time the clasp itself broke.

I am just jinxed? I really love this necklace and am torn as to whether I should even bother with a third one. (Assuming I can get one. There are none available right now but I assume there are some still floating around somewhere.)

  105. @5:05
Just to underscore what the other attys have said, err on the side of conservative until you know more about the office.

Based on the attire of the AAGs I've worked with, other than for court appearances or meetings the AG's office in my state is what I'd call refined business casual, e.g., sweater set, pressed chinos, nice flats. But if I were an intern I certainly wouldn't show up dressed like that on my first day of work. After you've had some time to settle in, take your cue from the other women in the office.

My job is a little unusual--half the time business casual, the other half is courtroom-level formality with the added fun (not) of having the proceedings on live TV. Although I often wear suits (pant and skirt) I actually prefer to wear suiting dresses--fewer decisions in the mornings. J.Crew makes a number of wool suiting dresses (e.g. Blair). I think they are attractive and appropriate alternatives to the traditional skirt suit.

  110. To the law intern, good advice from the JCA's who told you to start with suits and then take your cue from the women in the office and to err on the conservative side. I'm an investment banker for a very conservative firm and that is the advice I followed from my mother, which worked very well for me.

If you cannot afford to wear a suit every day, go with a pencil skirt in black or dark colour with a white tailored blouse and neutral hose with sensible heels and subtle jewelery. You'll figure it out soon enough and it is possible to develop your own style, while being taken seriously.

I worked as a consultant for an auditing firm and there were a lot of fun-loving, goofy people in our group but you would never know it by the demeanor displayed to our clients. The payoff for being serious is worth it especially with today's economy. People need to trust you and for that, you must look serious and responsible at all times.

    Congrats on your internship.

    ReplyDelete
  111. There are a few cute things in the new catalogue. A number of which I can wear with the Mod Herringbone Mini I bought this winter. It's so cute and a neutral that will work well with pastels.

Also nice to see more pants with 33" inseam. I've added the stretch chino to my cart. Will let you all know how it fits.

  112. A shout out to all my sister lawyers, law students, judges (and hats off to others who are obviously more sane!):

Having survived decades in the courtroom, supervised interns, left it all to study jurors and persuasion and get the doctorate, I STILL remember how hard it was for me after law school graduation figuring out What to Wear! It's not easy to this day.

Part of the reason I adore J.Crew now is that I can get white/black/suiting formal, or add a piece of playfulness and color. I now research and teach full time -- and already notice that my law students are fascinated with What to Wear.

Everybody's been right: IT ALL DEPENDS.

When you have more credibility and power, you get to wear what you want (more or less). The mini skirt and boots, though, yee gads.

Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Dress for who you are persuading: judge? jurors? hiring lawyers? co-workers?

Even jurors vary--in an big urban town I dressed more formally for trial. When I tried cases in farm country, I did field work to figure out what the women wore to church.

I dress differently teaching undergrads than i do teaching law students than I do giving CLE lectures.

But what fun! People are visual creatures. We have a powerful effect on others by what we wear. We have a powerful effect on OURSELVES by what we wear, too. We are more powerful, confident, happy, flirtatious, depending . . .

I just thought I would mention since many of you have said that FS scares you off. Of course, there doesn't seem to be a way to see if an item is FS before you order, but you can guess that things that are major markdown are, indeed, FS and will be specified as such in your order confirmation. Mine were the Melanie merino crewneck and the Merino Portland cardi. My matchstick cords, Silk dupioni skirt, ringspun scoopneck tee and Claire cropped chinos were not specified as Final Sale. 120. Hey all: I'm the law intern! i'm taking all your advice. Careful on the loud colors until I see people at work with them, stock up on skirts, slacks, dress shirts, cardigans, etc.

I just wanted to comment on something one of you said. Judge Kozinski and Callahan came to speak to my Evidence class this semester. Judge Callahan told a story about her experiences when she first started out as a district attorney in Sacramento. She said after one particularly long trial ended, some of the female jurors asked to come see her. In her office they asked her where she got all her cute suits and shoes because that's all they were paying attention to during the long trial. She says to this day, she dresses to get the jury to pay attentions to her, and then "wows" them with her words. I thought that was pretty amusing.

I'll make sure to skip the mini skirts and super high heels. And slowly try to introduce color into my "uniform" as I get a feel for the office. You're all great, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Finally neutral colors came back! I am glad to see new items in neutral colors after several strong-hue seasons (I don’t know why but strong colors makes me tired…). It is also good for my wallet because I already have some of similar pieces tucked away in my closet, although it is not good for J.Crew revenue:)

  122. I just perused the new catalog and noticed the silk dupioni skirt on page 11...looks like golden cypress in that pic.

My questio is, what color pairings would you all recommend for that skirt?

    Thanks and happy new year!

    ReplyDelete
  123. JaneEsq: I noticed that skirt in the new catalog also, and I immediately ordered it because it's on sale right now! I just love the look on the model with the jean jacket. Of course, for a more professional look you could always go with a neutral cashmere cardi or silk blouse.

FFM...any ideas on how we could wear this skirt both casual and for the office?? TIA!!

  124. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there will be a women's version of the crewcuts loula jacket. My daughter has it and it is so adorable. I'd love something just like it.....same fabric and detail. I think it would be a big seller.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Jane Esq. and Leslie: I think the pink tones would look really pretty with the Golden Cypress, such as the new Jasmine shade, and Bright Fuchsia, as well. Of course the neutrals such as Putty, Natural, White, Snow, and Champagne also work. :)

    ReplyDelete
  126. Jane Esq. and Leslie: I've been looking at the Golden Cypress in the catalog, and now can't decide if the skirt is to have more green undertones or yellow undertones. The color swatch leans toward the green, but the picture of the model makes it look more yellow. Please post your opinion of the true color once you receive it...the IRL color will be the deciding factor on what colors to wear it with it.

    ReplyDelete
  127. FFM and others-
I studied the colors for J Crew awhile back and determined the truest color is indeed the square swatch of color and not the color on the model. HTH.

    ReplyDelete
  128. FFM-you are welcome! I started studying this with all the new items I recv'd so that I would know for absolute sure which one was accurate. I found the model color is always more intense. Just to give an example using a pattern/colors I love..here's a shirt:

    http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Feature_Assortment/NewArrivals/shirts/PRDOVR~99927/99927.jsp

Sorry no hyperlink (I am clueless) anyway, if you look at the shirt here you will notice it is indeed softer in color in the swatch versus the model. Take the fuschia victoria cami for another example. The model looked like she was going to just buzz and catch on fire due to intense pink reading SO bright but the swatch was a bit more subdued IRL. I do say..just a bit;) Love mine:)

I really like some of the new camis -- the lattice (especially in amber), the Hayworth giraffe cami (which was nearly sold out last week in the Michigan Ave store, so I'm happy to see it online), and the sand floral Kya (which has a little button and hook at the top, so it looks like you can make the plunging v-neck into a *slightly* more modest button hole).

I also liked the Grenada palm cami until I realized it was $228. How on earth it's worth that price, I have no idea. In fact, for not much more, you can get the entire dress.

  135. As I perused the holiday and January catalogs and watched a rerun of From Russia with Love, I could not help but notice the similarities between J Crew's clothing and the actresses'costumes. Tatiana's skirt and turtleneck reminded me much of the serge pencil skirt and merino turtleneck. Ali Kerim's girlfriend wore a saffron colored dress with a sheen to it. It's shape reminded much of the taffeta or wool flannel and the color was similar to the Zoey lame tank in orange. Even their necklaces bore similarities to JCrew's jewelry. I feel those pieces the actresses wore are timeless and look just as great now as then. Even the gypsies' undergarments during the wrestling match reminded me of J Crew's swimwear. Anyway, between Mad Men and From Russia with Love, my love for 60s fashion has intensified.

Today I read a short article online regarding American's way of dress.

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/177386

I do wonder how long the obsession with having peculiar words stamped on one's bottoms will last. Yes, I've been teased by my European and South American friends at the fashion choices they associate with Americans. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing sneakers other than when I'm exercising. I think I may have had an Esprit fanny pack in grade school, though. Shorts have been another item I've been unable to embrace lest I'm on vacation on a sandy beach. Then I only use them to cover up the swimwear while going from the hotel to the beach. I think one of the biggest reasons I love J Crew is that I can easily dress up casual wear, like denim and chinos, with something sophisticated on top. Slip on some ballet flats instead of the aforementioned sneakers and off I go.

Anyway, if you get a chance, watch the film and you'll see the similarities between the costumes and much of what we have seen at JCrew these past few months.

  136. Anony@3:22

Good to know about the movie; will watch.

I live in the UK and Ireland and travel throughout Europe...I wear sneakers most the time due to a backproblem and wear flat boots and ballet flats occasionally. I see lots of tennis shoes over here...so don't quite get that comment from your Euro friends...

I also wear shorts in America all the time but don't here b/c he honestly doesn't get hot enough...that is why--in my opinion-- you don't see people in the U.K. or France or wherever in many Europ. spots wearing them...it isn't hot enough, long enough! When you live in super hot summer weather like in many US areas its do or die!

  141. The Newsweek article is just another case of the MainStream Media pandering to specific groups by bashing another. There are many classic American designers and gorgeous clothing such as Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen, Vera Wang, Calvin Klein, Michael Kohrs, etc, etc. Stores like JCrew, Ann Taylor, etc have fashions that are coveted everywhere.

And saying G.W. Bush was fashion-challenged is a joke. The MSM bashed him for working out excessively and the laugh B.H. Obama for doing same and I'm sure most of us couldn't pick their specific suit out of a lineup as they wear the basic politician suit and each is fit and trim.

I've lived in Europe and there are plenty of poorly dressed, especially in Britain where they seem to get more trashy with each passing year.

What a stupid article. It's true Americans love self-flagellation, if you read and believe this piece of trash.

I know that points disappear before they send them, but that still doesn't make my balance make any sense. all I know is that they better get it right when they send out the rewards. with all the other screw ups they have been having I don't have faith. I still have winter rewards left, that are enough for a reward card, and they didn't disappear... but it's only enough for 25$. (and I spent enough for at LEAST 150). So my winter rewards has like 600 points... and yet I have a new spring rewards with a couple points on it. If you don't have 500 points, don't they roll over to the next rewards season? Or do you get no credit for those 499 dollars spent?

As for the Newsweek article-I think Americans have gotten very apathetic and many are very overweight (it's a fact) and have no concern for their ill-fitting clothes. Many do not appear to care if they leave the house for the mall in their pjs etc.

Although I was just a mere babe in the 60's, I love the way people "dressed up" and am so keen on the Madmen style. I admit I have fallen victim to comfort too but in the way of nice jeans and cute top/sweater combo. Not in the aforementioned, horrendous sweats that no one reading this blog would get caught dead going out in public wearing. The blog Sartorial has some great commentary on this a few posts back.
IMO, I think it has nothing to do with the leader of our country so that was just..pointless.

Uggghh - your observation of how lazy we've gotten strikes a chord with me, mainly because I see myself as one of those apathetic disgraces. I was a mere babe in the 60s as well, when my mother dressed me up in patent leather mary janes and ridiculously embellished dresses to go to Sunday School.

Now, especially after your comment, I reflect on how lazy and apathetic I've gotten about my own attire, especially on the weekends.

Ha-weekends! If you could see my closet and then take a look at what I have been lounging around in most of this "winter break" you would just think it ludicrous.

BUT--I do make a point to think about what I am putting on my body when I DO leave the house. I realize I fall in between the spectrum of someone like FFM (whom I adore) that "dresses" everyday even when she isn't leaving the house and then some of the professional women that must "dress" for work.
I work out of the home and like to wear fashionable clothing when I go out on weekends or out to do errands (most of the time).

I fell victim to laziness when my children were younger (high maintenance) and now that they are independent (though still young) I have taken an approach that works for me..nice denim/cords on bottom with special tops/sweaters etc. on top. There's no reason to be "shlumpin it" when I leave the house and it just doesn't take that much more effort. I agree with the article in this regard--you can look nice buying from Wal-Mart, Target, Marshalls (my second LOVE)it just takes the desire to care about yourself more than many Americans do. I should add that I hardly think those reading and contributing to this blog are part of this fashion "demise"..no way:)

All the best in the New Year--and that's a resolution I think you can keep;)
P.S. I may need to resort to wearing my Flower Astrid while sitting in the house working/blogging all day. I have been inspired by the "Professor" (love it!)

  152. Anon @ 8:05 - Is it me, or do all the women look like prostitutes. Actually, prostitutes is too nice a word. Hookers.

    ReplyDelete
  153. ^ The women definitely look like hookers. Even the ones that are "dressed up" and going through the metal detector look trashy. And in the street, so drunk you can't walk. Happy New Year indeed.

  154. Those of you who have purchased some of the new arrivals at the B&M, how is the sizing? If you took a 4 in skirts during fall/winter, are you still a 4 or did they do away with the vanity sizing and go back to the old sizes.

    Appreciate your info....

  155. Bug Pin, you are TOO delightful--I smile at your "me-at-home-in-real-life" musings.

"Studies show"--one of my favorite phrases to motivate myself and others--that what we wear INFLUENCES us!! Our brains actually produce Good Chemicals [our brains are pretty cool pharmacies]--when we are dressed in some of our best. When law student have to "dress for court" they perform better at mock trial exercises; when students are told to dress it up for senior thesis presentations, they transform their presentations; when I wear my grandmother's ring, an antique rhinestone broach, or my Cascading Flowers Astrid (even over a tshirt), my mind is in the gear I need it to be for at-home-writing.

So, wear your favorite JCrew Stuff at Home Alone! Trigger your brain's inner pharmacy--free drugs! Yee gads, having one standard for going out in public and another for staying home says [just a wee bit, now, doesn't it], I'm not as important as others. Then, it becomes a WORSE paradox: I want others to enjoy how I dress so I think well of myself, so I am dependent on outside validity.

However, I did take my clothing-soul-mate-du-jour, CFA, off while eating a hearty stew. If I pilled any on it, I would have had to become violent . . . [Note to Self: DO NOT WEAR CFA when going out to eat spaghetti . . .]

  156. Professor-I agree completely that when you look good, you are "feelin it" and clothing goes a long way to making the mood and the attitude that one presents to the world. I actually know I FEEL different when I look nice.

As for the presenting to others for validity--there's that too. Guilty.
Are you a psychologist, as well?

BUT--when it comes to the theory of home versus outside world, I have to confess that I am 100% lazy when I have no where to go. My lack of motivation to work out first thing (read, I am not a morning person)finds many a day goes on until I hit the workout (I wouldn't want to have to shower & do my hair twice now, would I?) Greasy for the early part of the day and nice for the latter works well for me;) Ha-LOL!

And yes, I seem to collect J Crew. The rules of calculating cost per wear seem to be lost on me. I have a deeply ingrained issue with putting "special" things up for admiration but not using/wearing them enough. Where does that come from? I have learned my resolution needs to be--start wearing/using it on a daily basis (except CF Astrid while eating soup) and I appreciate the reminder/inspiration!

  157. Bug Pin & All JCrew Sisters who are not morning folk:

New study last week showed that the brains of creative people work better at night and not in the mornings--validating your experience [nyah-nyah to those who critique your morning slothfulness]--and they did it with brain scans, no less.

We DO owe ourselves the luxury of hanging out. And we are entitled to no makeup at those times (well, maybe moisturizer and lip gloss, she amended). *** But *** I have now found that's it just as easy to lounge around in JCrew chinos or the new JCrew ripped jeans AND a cashmere sweater (one size larger) than my old yuck stuff.

    {winks from a scientist who only occasionally lapses into the magic of fairy worlds}

  158. ^professor-you hit my magic daily outfit on the head--old cashmere that is two sizes too big (when fitted wasn't "in style" ;) and the vintage ripped jeans--these things are like jean sweats from J Crew! Softest denim but I will admit they can be a bit breezy even in my house during the winter.

I tried to snag those tuxedo sweats (I mean cheapest fancy sweats at $17) but the small was too small. I mean--I do have to answer the door when UPS and Fed Ex deliver my JC pkgs! But, I cannot bring myself to wear my loungers as revealing as tight workout pants:(

Oh..one more thought..where u live ought to reflect some of that positive attitude you are so gifted at expressing;)

  159. I should add I have heard this about night owl/creative types but nice to know their is scientific evidence to support it! Esp when my early rising husband gives me trouble;) I like to think I am creative:)

Does anyone have any suggestions of what color to wear with indigo jeans?
