Dear FFM: Help Put Together A J.Crew Outfit For Me

FabulousFloridaMommy (FFM) regularly guest blogs on outfits she creates with items that you, the members, request. :)
FFM has done it yet again! A big "thank you!" to FFM, who has created a fabulous outfit for numerous requests on styling J.Crew's "new arrivals" in the "Dear FFM: Help Put Together A J.Crew Outfit For Me" post!

To view the wonderful sets, click on the links below. (The name of the link relates to the request for an outfit.)

Are there any items from J.Crew (that you either own or are thinking about getting) that you would like FFM to create outfit ideas. Feel free to include additional info like: the climate/season you want to wear the item/outfit, as well as age bracket/lifestyle. :) After a few days, FFM will select a few items (from the feedback) to create a couple of Polyvore outfits with those items (which will then be posted for all).

What J.Crew pieces do you often wonder how to use in an outfit? What J.Crew items would you like to see an outfit created for (please include item name or item number)? Do you have any J.Crew items in your closet that you are unsure how to style with? Please, let us know! :)

  1. Dear FFM,

I bought the fabulous Candace sweater jacket in orange last year, and love it! The problem is, I don't know how to wear it! I'll be in chilly weather and am in my early 20s, so if you could put together something for me, you'd make me feel so much better! Thanks!

    Anna

  2. FFM: what in the world is a girl to do with these ->

? If I ever desire the "I just rolled out of bed" look, I can leave my pants in the dryer overnight. :)

  3. Not sure if you have already done this one, but I need more ideas for the Bronzed Ochre Double Serge Pencil skirt!

    Thank you!

  4. Great job FFM! I love your style ideas...you are the best!

  5. Hi Anna! I remember the Candace Jacket, and almost purchased it in the Orange myself...it has a very *Jackie O* like quality to it. :) I'll make a set for you, and I also suggest you try it with a pair of blue jeans and a white turtleneck or tank underneath it in the meantime. :)

Sloppy Look: OH MY!!! Maybe those pants should go on the other post as my questionable item of the week! Why would someone WANT to wear purposely wrinkled pants???

JLiz: Great request! It's on my list. :)

    Cass: You're welcome! :)

    Mirna: Thank you so much!!!

  6. FFM, Thanks for taking the time to help out others with outfit suggestions. Please just ignore pettiness like the above insult.

  7. Thank you so much FFM! I really appreciate all the time and effort you put in to create these *wonderful* outfit suggestions. You rock! :)

  8. I just got the Dream Simone cardigan in navy and love it, but am stalled for ideas other than super basic (white tank/tee underneath with jeans). I'd love some business casual suggestions.

Love your style and your generosity, FFM! :)

  9. Dear FFM:

Could you add some ideas for the Isbella heels in the navy/marigold color combo? I would like to be able to wear to work and having a hard time trying to figure out colors I can wear.

    Thanks!

  10. I love the sparkle and shine sets. Inspiring for New Years Eve.

  11. Sloppy Look - A few seasons ago JCrew did a trench coat with metal threaded fabric and it was also crinkled.

I think these pants are the same fabric. It doesn't look good on the website but IRL the fabric has such a unique texture, it really is eye-catching. Not for everyone, of course, but they look fun.

  12. Ok, I see a nasty comment was erased, which is fine, only now I need to make clear that I wasn't referring to FFM's post at 6:47 a.m. when I made my earlier comment.

  13. RE: Sloppy Look

J.Crew also did a skirt of the same fabric.

Not sure who would buy that look, but they keep bringing it back so someone, somewhere must like it.

    And now, back to FFM

  15. FFM, your sets are great. I am learning as I watch you put things together. Lots of layers, being winter and all, I love that as it is pretty cold where I live now.

Some of the outfits look very much like what my mother would put together and she was very stylish so that is a compliment! I could never mimic her style, I was always the tomboyish type but I am slowly working more ladylike details into my outfits, thanks to you. It feels great to have a softly tailored jacket with jeans or cords, something I would not have tried on my own. You give me courage to break out of my shell, which is long overdue. It's like I have a stylish sister giving advice.

Thanks so much for all you do and all the time you spend giving confidence to others.

  16. FFM- I was so excited to see a set with the Miranda jacket as I got this for Christmas and LOVE IT! I also love the set you put together and feel like I might actually make it work as I have the garden bracelet and a plum top. Thanks a bunch- very cute.

fyi- I did get my size 11 serengeti heels and they fit perfectly:)

  17. FFM: Thank you so much! I'm excited to see what you put together! I will definitely wear it with a turtleneck today for lunch with my girlfriends.

  18. FFM-as an associate I want to say thank you for assisting people to make outfits and see different pieces in different "genres" of style as they show how to appropriately mix and match your items and create a VERY "JCrew" look!
I am new to this blog and am so very elated to learn that there are so many people out there who enjoy the clothing and the service, and when either falls short I encourage you to voice your opinions (as you have) because they won't fix things that don't appear to be broken.

    Happy shopping, all!

  22. FFM: I find your sets so very useful. A million thanks!

This is a bit OT. I was looking at a previous set for the Astor jacket, and I think i recall your having purchased the Astor jacket and returning it. If so, i was wondering why. I am considering the jacket and am wondering about sizing and whether it is too flashy. I recently received the Maggie, and am definitely in between sizes with this one.

    TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Cleo26! I did in fact purchase the Astor jacket, and really liked it, too! The only reason I returned it is that I ended up with 2 more Maggie Jackets plus a Berry-Trim Astrid, and couldn't afford to keep all of them. I didn't feel I would get as much use out of the Astor as I do the Maggie Jackets. I ordered a size 4, which is the same size I wear in the Maggie Jacket. If I had kept it, I was going to hem the sleeves to actual bracelet length, as I felt the long sleeve length made the jacket look disproportionate. I know that women who are taller have commented that the sleeve length is great for them as is, but I am fairly short, so the sleeves were too long on me. I didn't think the jacket was too flashy, personally, and I love the fact that it can be worn with both black and brown. If I could afford to buy everything I want at J.Crew, the Astor WOULD be in my wardrobe. :) HTH!!!

  24. Hi FFM!

Can you give me some ideas on how to wear my rhubarb Andrea? I also have the hot pink Astrid with the flower and the Floral-Ruffle Astrid just sitting in my closet. I need a very casual (sahm) way to wear all three. Thanks in advance!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Here is another question for you all: Do you wear your winter coats over your jackets? I always want to wear one of my jackets (several astrids or my maggie) but feel weird with my heavy jacket over it. What does everyone else do?

    ReplyDelete
  26. musthavejcrew: Can you tell me what color of pink the Boucle' Astrid (droopy flower one) is IRL? Is it similar to Bright Fuchsia? I LOVE the cut of that jacket, btw!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes it is the bright fuchsia! Chloe (on the chloe conspiracy)gave a great way to bring the flower back to life. Its a great jacket.

    ReplyDelete
  28. musthavejcrew: Do you have the Victoria Ruffle Cami in Bright Fuchsia by any chance?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Btw: I love the idea of a basic white tank or tee underneath it with jeans, and then opera length pearls wrapped a couple of times around your neck along with a sparkly gold necklace (such as the Crystal Snowball Necklace), and pearl or gold earrings...casual yet very chic. :)

    Love Chloe's blog, too! :)

  30. Thank you, FFM. You will certainly get more use out of the Maggie jackets. They are so well-made and have classic lines. Unfortunately for me, none of the colors i've tried -- black and nickel -- look nice with my skin tone; the black, tenebrous with evangelical overtones and the nickel, too cold.

I so wish J.Crew would cease final sales; then i could purchase other colors, see how they look in person, and keep what works.

  31. musthavejcrew:

I wear suits or suiting separates to work daily so I always wear a coat over top the suit jacket when the temperature plummets. This year the Marie coat worked very well for me in that regard as it fit fine over most any suit and did not look bulky.

I also wear the plaza coat, Tuesday trench and a rose-colored peacoat from past seasons over suit jackets, as well as other coats I have that are not JCrew (Ralph Lauren, Burberry, etc). Not all coats work as some will just end up looking bulky, and you have to be careful with belted coats - you don't want to pull a coat belt tight over a suit jacket that is not slim-fitted or it will just cause wrinkles.

Unfortunately you usually need to size up or buy some roomier jackets for this purpose but since I am wearing them daily it is a necessity for me. Start with a basic coat like the Marie for this purpose and add to your collection as needed.

For casual use I can wear the larger coats with a thick sweater or layers underneath, but usually I go with more fitted coats like the Lady Day coat, or just a jacket when I am dressing casual without layers underneath.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Twisted Terrace Pants: I actually like the look. But I live in SoCal on the beach, where the not-trying-too-hard and casual look is de rigeur. I've actually been told I'm "trying too hard" when I wear a blazer out to dinner in the beach cities.

Locale matters as much in fashion as anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  33. FFM: No, I do not have a victoria. I tried it on and didn't feel comfortable in it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ann 4:40: Thanks for your advice on the coats/jackets!

    ReplyDelete
  35. What is all the hype over the Maggie?, it is just a blazer nothing special. Sometimes wearing a blazer is just trying too hard to impress.

    ReplyDelete
  36. musthavejcrew:

If there is another % off with free shipping, try the Marie coat in your usual size. It is roomy but a very basic look that you could layer over almost anything and it's a classic style so will last in your closet for years. I wear the collar up or down depending on the weather and what is underneath. It is also long enough to cover you when your backside are reaching in an out of cars with your children, etc. Very modest and comfortable for that reason too.

I think this has not been a popular coat because JCrew has so many other coats that look more exciting and stylish. I've bought a couple of those too. IMO, Marie is one of those basics like a white blouse and black skirt. I plan to buy one more in another color if there is a new promo, just because it is so versatile and a quality wool garment.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What's the hype with the Maggie? It's a well-made and great-fitting jacket. When you find one you like as much as some people like Maggie, you'll know.

    ;)

  38. FFM!

Love all the sets! I have many of those pieces, but I love how you put them together! Thanks for great ideas!

Have you done the light pewter & heather caramel bow necklace cardigan in sets yet?

    THANKS!

  41. anon 5:34: I don't want to find one, I have tried it on in the stores to see what all the fuss was about and it is ho hum average, nothing special just don't get all the hype for a piece of clothing.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anon @ 5:30 - I didn't mean when you find a Maggie, I meant, when you find a style that you really like, as other adore the Maggie.

Maybe you have never had the experience where you find something that is just perfectly made for you and you love to wear it over and over and over.

Or maybe I'm just a bit of a nut. :P

  43. dear ffm,

i'm having TROUBLE with the metallic houndstooth marie jacket! i don't know why but i just love it but besides over a simple black dress and black pants with a gray turtleneck i'm having a hard time not making it look too overdone. i was hoping to get some ideas. thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  44. suilove - the metallic Marie would look great with jeans and a tee for a casual glam look. I bought the metallic Lillie and I wear it with purples, blues, winter whites and ivories. Some pinks look good with it as well. It looks especially good with a dark purple scarf.

Just think of what colors you would wear with sterling silver jewelery.

  45. suilove: Congratulations on the Metallic Houndstooth Marie Jacket...it's so pretty! Here are a couple more options for you: Click Here . HTH! :)

  47. FFM,

I just bough the Plum Peacoat on sale - can you make a few sets with this jacket?

My ideas so far just include neutrals like grey, snow, and black.

    Thank you!

  48. Hi Argyle! Did you see the sets I made for the Black Bootcut cords and also for the Navy Victoria Cami? Be sure to check them out on my blog if you haven't already. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. FFM,

Wow - thanks so much for those sets. I've been watching your blog, but somehow I missed those - maybe because of the holidays. I have that candy tee and those acorn cords - perfect! I just need to get a kelly green cardigan now. I really like that camel sweater with the black cords, and the shoes help tie it together.

    Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  50. With the V-neck cardigan you put with the Victoria cami - do you wear that open or buttoned up?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Argyle! The cardigan can be worn either way, it's really up to you. I recently wore a v-neck cardigan with the Victoria Cami and left it unbuttoned.

  52. thanks so much anon, i just picked up a purple scarf today and it looked great with my marie with jeans and a plain white t shirt.

as for the fit, it runs VERY BIG. i got a 0 and there so much room left everywhere, bust, waist, arms..but im kinda into the boxy look now and i tried it with a patent black belt in the middle just to accentuate the waist but i can go without too..i mean i would have to petite 0 but sad they didn't make it with the marie..

i highly suggest that you size down one at least if you are not too the boxy cut but it being final sale now..perhaps you can get two sizes and ask CS to make an exception!

    good luck with it!

  55. For Christmas last year I received the black velvet ribbon belt adorned with glass beads (arranged in snowflake/star patterns). Most of my pants have a mid-rise, so when I wear the belt with pants no one can see it. Any ideas for how to wear it? I have lots of J Crew cardigans, chinos, jeans, and basic tees. Only a few skirts though, and they're mostly mini skirts.

  56. Dear FFM,

You were certainly a huge help for me when I picked my Engagement Pic outfit! I can't thank you enough! I ended up with an outfit almost identical to the one you recommended!

Now, I am trying to outfit my bridesmaids. I'm not sure if this is not your thing, so I completely understand if you don't respond to this, but I would love to see what you could do!

My wedding is August 1st, this year. The ceremony is going to be in a cathedral and the reception is going to be in a champagne pink, vintage ballroom. Although I didn't purchase my gown from jcrew, it certainly lends itself to the j.crew "look" with its ivory color and sophisticated lines.

I have seven bridesmaids. Two are going to be matrons of honor. One of the matrons of honor really doesn't want to wear yellow. I would love to give them different options for dress styles. I'm even open to mixing colors, if you find something fabulous!

Thanks for all of your help!

Could you create a work-ish outfit with the beautiful watercolor taffeta pencil skirt? It is so nice on its own but a little hard to put things with...
