J.Crew's Additional 20% Off on Final Sale

J.Crew is offering 20% off the final sale with the code EXTRA20. This offer expires 7/28/08. "Thanks!" to RatsOnParade, as well as Naomi, Mary, & Michelle in the "Sneak Peek: J.Crew Fall (Regular) Catalog" post, for letting us know about the additional percent off sale. :)

UPDATE: Angela & 3carmelitos (in the "J.Crew's Additional 20% Off Final Sale Gets Shortchanged" post) have found that the code works for regular sale items too!

I must say that I am disappointed that in order to enjoy the 20% off, we now have to enter the code. This code for additional percent off on the sale seems to be a regular feature. Now, you have to decide if you want to use a code like "free shipping" or "an additional percent off" from your order. I prefer the additional percent off being either "a given" (e.g. no need to use a code) like it use to be or allowing the site to handle multiple codes to be used per order (e.g. stackable codes). Not a fan of these new types of coupon codes. :(

What do you think about the "additional 20% off sale" this week (as oppose to last week's 30% off)? What do you think about the sale requiring the use of a code now?

  1. I am just upset that there are still items such as the 3 inch chino shorts that are showing up as $24.99 on the sale page, but when you go to its individual page they are still 39.50. Also in your cart! Has anyone had an experience where when you check out they go back to $24.99? I don't trust the site right now to even try...

  2. It is nice to have a discount code, but the code doesnt work on newly marked down items! What a bummer.

  3. I'm with you, Alexis - not digging having to use only one code, vs. being able to combine promotions/codes. Just scored a nice blue tattersall dress shirt for $39 with the extra 20% off! Woo hoo! :-)

  4. laverte: I have tried to check out and get the lower price on these mysterious markdowns, but it doesn't work - was still charged the full price. This really is a frustrating glitch to the website "upgrade". Doesn't this technically constitute false advertising?

  5. I am still wondering if this is because it is easier to update the site to accept the code than to mark down the sale items, for whatever reason. In my head they seem like they would both be pretty easy to do, but I guess I am hoping that J.Crew seriously didn't do this to their customers.

  6. It is either free shipping or an extra percent off...JCrew is not as customer friendly as other stores...very disappointed in them.....I think their stock and sales are going to suffer even more...I am buying less and less from them...I used to buy over $1,200 a month from them and I have cut that in half since the coupon codes were removed. There is a nice scarf I want but I don't want to pay $8.50 in shipping for it!

  7. kevin: i don't think it's false advertising, because the misrepresentation isn't material. As far as I know, they are under no legal obligation to honor the sale prices they put out - they are merely solicitations to customers to offer to purchase the item at that price. Technically, J.Crew can accept a customer's offer or reject it. While it's not something they are liable for, it IS bad business practice. I feel like if it were anywhere else, we all would have abandoned the store by now. It's just one bad move after another with J.Crew these days.

But oh, I love the fall clothes!

  8. Should sales be getter better this time of year? Not worse...30% off just a week or so ago! This should be at least another 30% off or 40%....another big disappointment from JCrew....

I noticed that their sale stuff doesn't seem to be going fast at all and I don't see where an additional 20% will help much...the 30% barely moved anything....

  9. Thanks, Michelle! This is very interesting - I didn't realize that J. Crew, or any other retailer, is not obligated to honor an advertised sale price. You're right - it does make for poor business practice. Hopefully the "kinks" will be worked out soon. Can't wait for the fall catalog to arrive in the mail!!! (-:

  10. I really think J.Crew is hurting as a result of this web fiasco. They are still making sales, but a lot of people (like myself and others on this blog) are reluctant to purchase online until all of this is worked out. Plus, I think a lot of us are sick of the tired, picked-through sale merchandise already (in stores and online). Bring on the fall!

  11. Kevin: Congrats on the dress shirt. JCrew has some of the best quality dress shirts I have seen. I really don't like having to use a code to take advantage of the additional percent off. I hope that this is just temporary and they figure how to make it automatic (like how it was with their old site).

Laverte & Kevin: I think it is false advertising to show higher prices after you "cart it" at the lower price. But maybe that is why they put that disclaimer on the website "Orders are subject to verification and acceptance before shipping. We are not responsible for typographical errors that may appear on our website.". :(

Anonymous at 8:28 AM: I hear you about not wanting to spend money online with them. Their shipping fees are very high for the industry. And now they are charging tax on the shipping!

  12. I'm so confused as to what is going on with J.Crew. In the stores, many of the items are WAY less expensive than they are on the website and still you can get an additional % off. In addition, there's this 20% off business for the same exact clothing that was 30% off last week? I understand there must be business tactics involved, but I don't see the allure of continuing to shop as a store that toys with their customers and then doesn't honor anyone's credit, refund, or otherwise unexplainable missing order!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thakns, Alexis! That makes sense about the typographical error disclaimer guarding them against false advertising allegations. Doesn't make it any less frustrating, though :(. Yes, the men's dress shirts are exceptional; the fit is perfect.

  14. I agree with everyone! This is so lame - why do we have to use a coupon code to get the extra % off, when it used to be automatic? The first time I thought it was just because of the new website not functioning properly, but now I'm not so sure.

Overall, I think I'm definitely going to be more a store shopper now. The prices are better in store, and shipping prices are ridiculous, especially now that they are taxing the shipping too! Is that even allowed?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Posted this on another thread, but thought I'd try here. I just tried a fictional order and had a question for Canadian shoppers. I notice now you can select from 3 shipping options in the drop down menu. It seems if you choose Canadian Ground there is tax, but if you select Canadian Post and recalculate there isn't, same with if you choose Canadian Air. I'm confused! For anyone who's recently placed an order from Canada, what's been your experience with the shipping/tax and duty? Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

  16. Am I missing something or are there no more items on this sale than on the 30% off sale??? Or at lower prices? Why would we buy stuff that had a better markdown last week?? I'm confused.

Oh, I was wondering that too, when are the reward cards coming??

  18. I just got off the phone with a CS rep. She has worked for JCrew for 15 years. She was honest and answered my questions and I appreciate her candor about all the problems...she could not place my order at all though....there are NEW problems placing orders that just started this morning. I would urge everyone to be very careful....as I said, she could not get an order to go through and the computer was showing her things she had never seen! Things are still not going well......

  19. Just got off the phone with JCrew credit card services..reward cards are set to be mail around July 30, 31, Aug. 1 time frame. All should be received by Aug. 10.

  20. I got an email saying that new styles have been added to the final sale. So I got my hopes up and browsed the website... there wasn't really anything new and the website is still showing items that are sold out.

  21. thanks anon at 9:01!

  22. I just got an email that "new styles have been added to the final sale". Funny, I didn't see any - and the same items are still showing $null and the chino shorts in the sale are now back to regular price. Geez, they may as well just send a daily e-mail: "Don't bother, the site's still messed up."!

  23. FYI: Also, the nice 15 year CS vet told me all gift cards got cancelled. It is a system wide problem that they are still working on...no end in site...but they are working on it....I will just wait it out...I just want mine that was a refund...

  24. I also hate that you have to enter the code to get the additional percent off, not to mention that it is so lame to make the discount less than last week, while offering less and less merchandise...I am also tired of seeing the same merchandise...I rarely look anymore, and if I do it is only to see if a specific item or two have been restocked...I am not placing anymore orders...I think I almost have everything with my own personal order fiasco worked out, and won't risk it again.

  25. Oh how I wish I had a B&M store close by. It used to be that the 1.5 hr drive to ATL was worth it, but with gas and the chance that items might not be there, it is not. I guess the only thing to do is start calling the stores to have items shipped to my house since I don't trust the website, and everyone is saying prices are lower in stores anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with jcrewbug -- why would I buy something at 20% off when it was 30% off a week ago? At first I thought they must have lowered prices, but no -- they're the same! Ridiculous for JCrew to be going backwards in terms of sale pricing -- next thing you know they'll say, "We went back to the FULL price -- buy now!!!"

I think they're desperately trying to save pennies where they can, not realizing what they might be losing in the bigger picture (ie, our good favor and shopping dollars).

And I definitely agree that the lack of ability to get both the percentage off AND free shipping is ridiculous. JCrew, please clean up your act -- I expect more from you.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anon: thanks for all the info from the CS rep. I can't believe this is still going on! It's truly beyond ridiculous. I'm definitely not ordering anything for a good long while! well, unless a polka dot san telmo comes up in my size...I think I would risk it then...:)

and an email about new sale items?!?! There is nothing new in the sale! Some things have been restocked, but nothing is NEW.

  28. I am sure they made you type the code in so that you can't stack codes. THATS WRONG! I am sorry but if you offer discounts we should be able to use them. All the other retailers are doing it. I heard on the news that a new trend in NYC is going into a department store during the sale and asking the SA "what can you do for me on the price." Everyone is taking everything they can get because the economy sucks right now. If Jcrew wants me as a customer they better make it so i don't have to spend an hour on the phone with CS when they eff up my orders and I should be allowed to use FS on whatever I choose so long as its within their limit.

I AM FURIOUS WITH J CREW RIGHT NOW

  29. Anonymous at 8:58 AM: Thanks for the "heads up" about ordering!

Anonymous at 9:01AM: Thanks for sharing. I actually made your comment into its own post. :)

Lynn & Silver Lining: I got that email too. I made its own post about it (J.Crew Email About Final Sale) because I was so dissappointed by it.

  30. Anonymous at 9:03 AM: Thanks for sharing what the CS said. That is ridiculous about the gift cards!

FabulousFloridaMommy: I am so with you about not liking the code for the sale. Just awful.

Blumre: I saw a similar report on tv recently too (about bargaining at regular retail stores). I just can't understand why JCrew would make us type a code that use to be automatic and offer a sale that was for less off than a week ago.

Kater: I loved those $20 off $80 coupons! Now those were great codes!!! :)

  31. My experience is that I placed an order for the polka dot San telmo. Saw it and couldn't resist. They cjarged me 14.50 for ground shipping. Ridiculous! I them called to get my Ed. discount, and asked if she could give free shipping. The associate was so nice and said yes.
this morning I see there is an extra 20% off! I decided to call jcrew again. After being on hold for 10 minutes, I talked to an associate and requested a price adjustment. She looked at my order and agreed.
Now let's just hope the jacket will arrive sound and safely, and that I'll get the credit they have promised.
I'm getting excited about the fall items, but I'm also glad I was able to finally get my polka dot San telmo!!

  32. I'm totally in agreement that the unstackability of the codes totally sucks, and 20% off is generally worthless. But my prediction is that there will be a bigger sale (i.e. once all the store merchandise has been returned for online sales) maybe in the next week - so the 20% off is to keep folks coming back and looking/maybe buying in the meantime. Cuz sure, 20% off doesn't even offset the shipping cost, but it's better than nothing.

Even with all recent issues on the website, I'd still have to say I have more luck online than I ever do at the b&m stores. They never have my size or they're totally out of stock of an item - I almost always come away from the mall empty-handed.

I wanted to share my most recent online finds - just ordered in the last few days from the sale section. So many of you have been raving about the City-Fit Buttery Twill Trousers that I got obsessed with finding them in my size. Problem though, I don't know what my size is since their pants seem to be inconsistent depending on the type of cut or fabric. So - I've now ordered 6 pairs of the City-Fit Buttery Twill Trousers (over the course of the last three days!) - two size 4's in soft graphite, two size 6's in soft graphite, 1 size 6 in navy, and 1 size 4 in burnished moss. I'm hoping to take advantage of that "swap" day Alexis set up to get rid of the sizes that don't fit (since they're all final sale).

I know I should be mad at J.Crew for the customer disappreciation they've shown to us all, but I can't help loving their clothes. Banana Republic's current collection is so dawdy/frumpy/cliché right now too - I've gotta spend it somewhere, right? :)

  33. Does anyone have the Lucaya espadrilles? I have been wanting them in cherry blossom and they are finally showing up in my size. However, if they are not comfortable, then I don't want them. I'm a teacher and I have to wear comfortable shoes to school since I stand for so long. I wish they had them in stock last week when they were 30% off, but they have been out of stock for weeks now. Of course, maybe they don't really have them. Anyway, any opinions?

  34. RatsonParade: 6 pairs of the Buttery Twill Trousers- That is fantastic!!! They are excellent as far as pants goes. :) I also can't blame you for shopping online. J.Crew merchandise is still lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ratsonparade, i think you will love the city-fit buttery twill trousers! I normally wear a 10/12 and I bought these in the Tall 10 (since the regular size inseam is only 32 1/2 and I need a min of 33 - 33 1/2" to wear with flats...odd b/c i'm only 5'7 but seem to have freakishly long legs!)
    Love the material....so soft!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. a and alexis - thanks for the tips! I can't wait to try them on! And I'm glad to hear about the length - that's always a big thing with me too. I'm 5'5" and I just hate pants that don't come all the way down to touch the floor (with flats) - it makes me feel dorky when I walk or sit down and you can see my socks. But at the same time I can't stand the pants that are so long they drag along behind me either! So picky!

  37. Math Teacher -- I had the metallic Lucaya espadrilles. They definitely take some getting used to, and they're sure not walking shoes. That said, however, after a few times wearing them they are more comfortable than you would expect a 3+ inch heel to be. I don't know if you'd want to spend 8 hours standing in them, but they're not bad. All THAT said, though, I bought mine in the spring when they came out, and they just fell apart a few days ago and I took them back and only got the sale price since I didn't have the receipt. :( Might have been a faulty pair though...

    ReplyDelete
  38. allison: thanks for your comments. Maybe I should wait and see if they get marked down again. While I don't stand for 8 hours, I do spend a lot of time on my feet, standing and walking around the room. I love the cherry blossom print, but it didn't look good next to my face, so I thought the shoes would work. I know their flats aren't very supportive but I was hoping the wedges would be better. :( If your shoes have already fallen apart, that's not good. Their shoes are so expensive, they should last for years, not months. Now I'll have more money to spend on new fall items. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Math Teacher- you said something about calling with an Ed. discount. Is that an educator's discount? I don't order from Jcrew that often but I have my eye on some dresses and I'm a teacher with tight funds in the summer! If there is an educator's discount how do you get it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. anon @ 6:01: I have called in several orders and received the 15% teachers' discount. All they ask for is my school email address. So far, I've only had one sa ask for proof in a store and I have a copy of my contract in my purse (just for those who ask!). Some on this blog have had cs tell them that they can't use both discounts, but so far I haven't had any problem.

  41. I'm new to this blog and it's great! I have been searching for a free ship code that a lot of you have mentioned. Is there one that is working right now?
