As usual, my favorite thing to look at is the "outfit obsessions" section. The simple styling is perfectly chic and on-trend. Loves it!
Did you check out the Factory site today? Were you able to snag any amazing deals? If so, please share! :)
Factory usually has reproductions of items that I already scored from retail or didn't want in the first place. A few years ago I would frequently find things there that I love but now I rarely do, especially since I try to steer clear of 100% synthetic content and tend to lean more towards quality rather than quantity in regards to my clothing now.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll wait for a better sale to get the belt, money clip and tee that I am actually interested in.
I am a little annoyed at how many items are exact copies of last year's retail items. I agree with D*ska that it's stuff I already have or already don't want.
ReplyDeleteI know that's what factory is now... but it's kind of a huge turnoff. I will still shop there for some of the jewelry and other cute accessories but most of the clothing is just meh.
I agree with D*ska and J.CrewJD. Plus the reproductions at the factory store also seem to make the retail items feel less special, IMO. Especially when they make exact replicas of items that were supposedly 'limited edition' at retail just a year or two previously.
DeleteI have very mixed feelings about Factory. I totally agree about the retail reproductions, it does make it feel less special. My heart kind of sunk when I saw SO many exact replicas from last spring. At the same time, I do like factory for basics, the lower price point and the ability to snag items I missed the first time around.
ReplyDeleteI am happy that the Factory makes the retail reproductions. Not everyone has a JCrew store near them nor can afford JCRew's increasing prices. I look forward to my once a year stop at the Factory store on our way to the beach in April:)
ReplyDeleteI agree! Sometimes things sell out and I don't want to pay the high Ebay re-sale prices, so the J. Crew Factory options work for me. I like that I can pick up something I missed out on! And there are many items that are factory only. I think its a good mix of both!
ReplyDeleteBut hasn't factory always made retail reproductions? I know I'm always especially careful on Ebay to check to make sure something *is* retail if it's being listed as such, even on older pieces from 2005-2008...
ReplyDeleteI tend to appreciate being able to pick up something that I missed from retail, although I am also avoiding the synthetics, which is becoming increasing difficult. I loved it when Factory made things like the Victoria cami in real silk and in prints that it wasn't originally issued in.
Those who did buy original retail can maybe take a bit of comfort in the fact the factory versions are usually in poly (anchor print blouse, I'm looking at you!), and that you got to enjoy the piece for at least a year before the Factory version was rolled out...
Paula I really adored that period when JC Factory reproduced retail items in different prints or colors. I have the factory only print Victoria, Green Pembroke tweed coat in factory only green color and the Celtic country jacket in the factory only heather gray color among others. All of them are the same fabrics or close enough to the original in fabric content and really good quality, though onviously not on par with retail at the time. IMHO, I think that's what Factory should primarily be.
DeleteThough I do think that if I hadn't gotten the anchor blouse I might have been tempted to get the Factory poly version even though it's... shudder...poly.
D*ska, you hit the nail on the head. I still remember going into the factory store in 2008 and seeing all the bellas. And the abstract rose print silk victoria blouse from factory, circa 2009ish, is among my favorite tops.
DeleteThe all poly all the time stuff just isn't cutting it.
Wow. Atrocious grammar abounds. *Goes to drink more black tea*
DeleteJ.CrewJD, I have that blouse too. I just had to collect the Vicky in every color/print that I could find and that print is divine. I was so happy when I found something that I loved in it.
DeleteThe factory Bellas were a 80/20, wool/nylon blend or something like that but they were just as beautiful. I still missed out on them in Factory though. My nearest store was a good two hours away and I couldn't find my size to save my life. Picked up all my Bellas on eBay at better than store prices. That was a while back though. Good ole eBay/JC days. Sigh.
I'm so happy they have been putting out reproductions of older retail items. I've missed some. Last year, I bought the Raindrop Lace top, but the wrong size. I was able to get it at the Factory in the right size. Mirabelle dress was another one I missed but found at Factory. Paintbox cardigan. I think I'm going to try the white eyelet schoolboy. The Factory cupcake necklaces are fantastic, I bought the green/mint one. I know I complain about the Factory web site, but the Factory store is usually pretty great.
ReplyDeleteThe Factory Stripe Knit Blazer is SO CUTE with the combination of red, navy and white. Gah. I have two blue and white stripe blazers--one from Express and one from J Crew. But this one is too cute...
ReplyDeleteFor anyone interested in Factory's Pindot Chambray--mine arrived today. I like it and will keep it--it was about $35 after all. The fabric is a great color--pretty much like the retail version. The shirt is a good length and fit, though obviously note as tailored as the Retail version which offers more options (00 and on up, versus, XXS, XS, etc,). The dots themselves are smaller, and less obvious, but that's not a terrible thing. All in all, a good deal if you get it on sale.
Other than the cotton "basics" I find factory items kinda pricey for the fabric content and construction, even though it is definitely nice to sometimes find an old friend that you missed in your size at retail. $40 for unlined polyester/blends vs. $60 for the real thing on sale/promo doesn't seem like that good of a deal to me.
ReplyDeleteBUT ... I really love factory styling lately, lots of looks that I would actually copy this season. All the "collection" styling can be clownish at times and just doesn't work IRL.
J. Crew factory is hit or miss for me. This recent set of new arrivals was eh. But the last one had lots to love. I picked up quite a few things. But also stacked their fb promo too to get an even better price. I just posted an outfit incorporating the printed polka dot skirt. Check it out on my blog, Pigtails and Pearls.
ReplyDeleteAs a stay at home mom and also part time worker with children I appreciate everything not having to be dry cleaned and I like the Factory version of many items:) Not everyone wants a silk top for daily wear esp. in high heat summer conditions! So glad a variety is offered for all to pick from.
ReplyDeleteI'm always on the fence...Its great that I can get some basics I like at a good price, but its annoying that I can't get a tall. Or that the selection is really small. The factory stores used to be loaded with merchandise and now as least my store looks so sad.
ReplyDeleteI can remember when you could score some retail stuff on the clearance racks too.
I'm with Genny! I loved the Anchors Aweigh top last year, but the silk top didn't fit my lifestyle - I'm thrilled there's a poly, washable version.
