Off On a Tangent: Land's End Canvas {free shipping & reviews are in!}

Don't worry, I am still all about the Crew! But sometimes there are codes/ offers from other retailers that might be useful for some J.Crew Aficionadas & Aficionados, like now...As mentioned in the "Off On A Tangent: Land's End Canvas {20% off & fre...", I am becoming a *huge* fan of Land's End latest Canvas line (click here to shop online).

Right now, Land's End Canvas is offering free shipping (no minimum) using promo code CANVASFB & pin 00001174. This offer expires 3/7/10.

Also, "thanks!" to J.Crew Guy In Canada who shared with us two posts with great reviews of various items for MEN from Land's Ends Canvas:
But wait! There are more great blogs reviewing Land's End Canvas items for WOMEN too. The following are just a sampling:
The press is also lovin' this new line. The first two articles listed below not only review Canvas but also provide several images (one of them shown above). The styles are eerily similar to J.Crew (& in a good way). The last article talks about future plans & expansion.

I recently purchased the Women's Gingham Poplin Shirt (Item #39093-6X42; $44.50) in "True Navy Check". I went with size 0 for a more fitted cut, and it worked out fantastically. The fabric is absolutely lovely- with a bit of stretch thanks to the Lycra Spandex mixed with the Cotton. Usually J.Crew's button-downs are a bit tight on the last button (because I am a pear shape). Not this shirt. It is meant for my body frame. It is a better fit for me than J.Crew's Perfect Shirts. I liked this shirt so much, that I ordered a second in "China Blue Check".

Do you have a review of a Land's End (LE) Canvas item? If so, please share with us your review (or link to your review)! We would love to hear more about it. :)

  2. I bought the straight-leg jeans, a tote bag, and a bracelet on the 20% off promo.

The jeans are really comfy, and the rise is good for me (I'm a shorty!), but the leg opening was a little wider than I was expecting.

LOVE the tote. I can haul my laptop, notebooks, etc. in it and I've gotten several compliments on the green color.

  3. I ordered a cotton cardi and a poplin dress from Canvas. Both excellent quality and reasonably priced. The dress fit didn't end up working for my body but my sis liked it and is keeping it so that saved me a return. They also sent me a handwritten thank you note after I received my order.

  4. I have sooooo been loving LE Canvas lately! My first ever purchase was the Navy Gingham Poplin Shirt too! It ffit amazingly well, and the quality is fantastic! I liked it so well, I just ordered it in the Green Apple color durring the 25% off promo they had for one day last week. In fact, after liking the Canvas line so well, I've been buying like crazy from the regular LE line. They have some really cute things, and some pretty amazing deals in the Overstock section, esp. the accessories. I got some beautiful striped knit and silk scarves for like $8 each (with no min. FS of course)!
Yes, it's true, some of the regular LE things things can look a little "matronly" and you have to take note of which "fit" it is, but I realize I'm not going to love every single piece anywhere I shop. And the quality, construction, great CS and unlimited return policy makes the pieces I do get even better because I know I won't have to worry about anything falling apart after one season (Ahem, I'm looking at you here, J Crew!)

  5. *jumps on LE/Canvas love bandwagon*

I am loving the Canvas offerings, and have discovered the original LE like egyptomaniac. Their pieces have really filled the void that I have unsuccessfully tried to get from JC for the last 2 years. Their modern fit bootleg and matchstick jeans are fabulous (and only $19.99 apiece in the overstocks section!), and there are enough free ship/no min codes floating around to take advantage of. No ridealongs necessary!

Yes, you do have to play around with fit at first but with a Sears store nearby I can return there quickly. Plus, with their "Guaranteed. Period" policy I don't have to worry about actually wearing the clothes like I've had to with JC.

  6. I can vouch for LE Canvas, their slub cotton tees are better constructed and higher quality than JC. I refuse to buy anymore JC tees, they are so thin and sheer. I wish I tried LE Matchstick jeans they are half the price of JC, instead I drank the crewlade, I could have saved myself alot of money.

  7. Hi casual-crew! For $20 you should give the LE matchsticks a try, even if it's just to have another pair on hand. I'm a solid 28 in JC jeans, but the LE 4 matchsticks were a tad slouchy on me. I sized down to a LE 2 and they fit perfectly - they have quite a bit of stretch in them, which I like, so they may start to slouch over time, but I'm not that concerned about it.

Back to Canvas, I also love the Heritage cardigans. The buttons are flat so you don't have to fiddle with them (sometimes the Jackie buttons have to be adjusted) and they are short, but not cropped for those that are sick of long cardigans. They also have a little bit of stretch in them which is nice, and long sleeves. The Cherry color is a bright red/pink - I'd say it's similar to JC's "bright rose" from a while back.

  8. I completely agree with silver_lining that Canvas fills the gap that J.Crew has left. I'm about to purchase the gingham poplin shirt from Canvas (because it retails for a ridiculous $70 at J.Crew--ew). Does anyone have any suggestions about sizing? I'm a 4 in J.Crew. Thanks!

  9. I find LE's instant online chat service to be WONDERFUL. I have used it a lot with great success.

  10. Danielle,
Try the online chat. They will help you figure out your size.

  11. I'm very impressed with LE Canvas, get fit and even better prices. J.Crew needs to be careful with companies like these around.

  12. Thanks Summer! They were very helpful. My shirt is now on its way to me :)

  13. Yes, the starting price points being much lower and GREAT quality for LE and LLBean (which has really updated their line/look as well)spell "trouble" for JCrew in my book as well. I had already become disenchanted with them alone and then these two companies have come and courted me back after many years being absent. I still bought from LE and LLBean for my husband and daughter and for family gifts but not much myself. Maybe in the last 8 years for me I bought a belt, a boat and tote bag and a flannel night shirt! I have place so many LE orders I have lost count in the past few months and at least 4 from LLBean.

  14. Danielle,

That is super! Is this your first LE or LE Canvas purchase? I am excited for you if it is. I hope the shirt fits great and you like the style and quality. If not call CS right away. They are the BEST.

  15. Also since swimsuit season is almost here I noticed the cute new swimsuits at LE Canvas. I have been wearing LE suits since the 90's and if I was in my 20's again I would be all over the canvas suits....

  16. Do they sell the LE Canvas line in stores? Thru Sears? Or just online?

JCrew Guy --> did you get your items in Canada, and where?

  17. Hi! I ordered the LE Canvas boyfriend jeans last week. Unfortunately, they aren't going to work for me. I usually wear a 26/2 in Gap jeans, so I ordered the 26/0 in LE Canvas. The sizing it comprable. I love that the inseam is only 29 inches (rolled to 26 when packaged), so that works for a shorty/petite size like me. The jeans fit really well in the thigh and butt, but gapped way too much in the waist for me. I think they are meant to be worn lower on the hip, but then the rise looks weird. I could probably have them taken in at the waist, but I decided to get a pair of Gap boyfriend jeans instead. That won't stop me from trying other pieces, though. I need to get my butt down to the Canvas store so that I can try things on! With free shipping and online coupon codes, it's easy to be lazy. ;-)

I've used their online chat a few times -- it is wonderful. JC can't hold a candle to LE customer service and commitment to quality, IMO.

  18. As far as I know the LE Canvas line is NOT in any Sears stores at the moment. Online only. In the future, depending on how it sells, they may put some pieces in stores.

  19. Summer, this is my first Canvas order! I'm really excited. If this works out, I have a few skirts that I might just have to buy with my next paycheck. I could honestly see Canvas giving J.Crew a run for their money.

  20. After the last discount code was posted on this blog, I bought the heritage cardigan. The quality is great and the cardigan is adorable. But I had an issue with the size. In regular LE I am an XS. I e-mailed LE customer service to ask about sizes in LE Canvas and they said that I'd also wear an XS. When the cardigan arrived, I discovered that that wasn't true - it was too small. I also had ordered the cherry, which is a nice color, but not how it looks on the web site (in person it is more of a bright watermelon pink). But here's the silver lining in all of this: I called LE to exchange and they promptly sent me a small in a different color (I chose the coral), honoring the promotion I had used and giving me free shipping. Yesterday I drove over to Sears and returned the original cardigan with no problem. Easy peasy. LE customer service makes it worth giving this brand a try.

  21. I placed an order yesterday (it hasn't arrived obviously) but I just wanted to say that if you have any concern about measurements (I hate generic size charts), use the online chat function. The rep got me the exact measurements I needed!

  22. I saw the comment about 20% off sweaters and rushed over to Canvas to check out the sale! Too bad it's not LE instead of JC - I think I would have ordered

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey Clicquot, I actually ordered my items on-line. It would be great to see all of it in person, but it's not possible here in Canada.

With all the free shipping LE has it's easy to order and they ship quicker than J.Crew as well.

  24. There are two Canvas stores -- one in Madison, WI (which I think took over the old LE outlet -- it's been a while since I've been to State Street). The other is in New Jersey (I think it's open?). Too bad Sears doesn't carry the line yet, but maybe that will change!

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK,

There must be two differnt Danielle's writing comments on this thread as I am a bit confused but thanks for both your posts!

I just hope I am not the only one thinking this!

  26. A Lands End Canvas will be opening at the Oak Brook, IL Sears store. I was there last weekend and it appears they are almost done setting it up. Can't wait to check it out. It will be great to see the clothes in person.

  27. I have loved Lands' End for a long time now. I really LOVE the new Canvas line. I recently purchased the Ragtop Newspaper Tote. Unfortunately it was a little big on me. You can see my pics here: http://sassyengineer.blogspot.com/2010/02/fashion-help.html
I had to return it, but I'm already drooling over new items. Lands' End Canvas also sent me a nice handwritten note for my purchase. They are by far one of my favorite retailers!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, there are two Danielles. ;-)

I posted the review about the boyfriend jeans and the location of the stores. And apparently both of us have our eye on the gingham poplin shirt from Canvas!

  29. Count me in as another Canvas fan. Being a size 0 J Crews shirts are still too big for me. Ordered the gingham shirt in a 0 and it was perfect. Great, soft fabric and fantastic fit. Well-priced too. I went ahead and ordered another one, along with a knit button down shirt that looked comfy and easy to pack for travel.

  30. Cliquot, it seems like they're putting in more Canvas boutiques into Sears. The Sephora is right by Sears, and as I was leaving I noticed big canvas sheets marking areas off toward the front of the store in the LE area. (The canvas sheets actually said something like Canvas coming soon, so it was kind of cute.) I'm definitely going to be checking Canvas out in person due to all the good reviews! I also used to be a big fan of LE swimsuits, then I became a JC hoarder and now have about a decade and a half worth of mix and match pieces that I got for ten or so bucks a pop, so no need to buy from anyone for quite awhile.

  31. I bought 3 items from Lands End Canvas: 2 gingham poplin shirts, in China blue and whatever they call the bright green color, and the blue flowered lawn camp shirt. I found the sizing to be similar to JCrew, but maybe a touch larger. I also ordered the boyfriend chinos and heritage chinos, but they haven't arrived yet.

Has anyone tried the Heritage poplin shirt? The description says to size up, but I suspect it isn't necessary unless you prefer a loose fit.

  32. Looks like they will be rolling out more Canvas stores

Also, I saw job postings, one is Redmond, WA.

  33. Thanks for the news about Oakbrook, Danielle! I was wondering when the curtains would come down -- have to go over there tomorrow.

  34. I will be in IL this summer visiting my sister near Oakbrook. Thanks for the post everyone! We will have to go shopping:)

  35. Oh! I've been eyeing Canvas for a while. Just made a post about how much I love it. Lol. I'm sad I missed all the promotions. I'll hang on until the next one rolls through to purchase the sleeveless poplin shift dress, in probably both colors (sand and black) and a heritage boyfriend cardigan (not sure what color yet). The dress is just so perfect for my profession and literally goes with everything. It makes me wish J.Crew would get back on the bandwagon and start offering more classic items.

  36. The 40% off and free shipping sale this week rocked with LEC. I got an entire swim outfit--board shorts, surf shirt, bikini top for $35 TOTAL. So cute and affordable--the surf shirt was $7.99!!
