J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. OT but there is a funny article on the Man Repelled on how to DIY the "tinsel" sweater from the Fall 15 show here: http://www.manrepeller.com/2015/03/how-to-make-a-party-polo.html

    1. Hi Denee - I think that the summer rewards period ends today, so they'll probably come out in early May and be good until June 15th.

  3. Have reviewed the keyhole dress as well the collection pleated eyelet dress. I love the collection pleated dress (but the price!!??). It's a little thin (read see-through) but the eyelets are lovely and the length so cool! I loved the black more than the creamy white. As far as the keyhole dress, the pink is gorgeous irl but it's tight so size up and the front slit is just a tad too low.

  4. Madewell, Silk Porcelain Floral Scarf - Soft, lightweight scarf. The background appears peachy on my monitor, but it is an off white/light cream color IRL. Other colors are dark coral/light red and a khaki/tan shade that wasn't apparent to me in the website photo. The pattern is printed on but, because of the shading, appears to be three dimensional from a distance. I agree with the description, it has a worn, vintagey vibe. I'm looking forward to wearing it a lot this Spring and Summer.

  6. I realize this is old news but I wish they would bring back the Classic Cafe Capri. I stocked up when they switched to a version with pockets but now my supply looks old and I need pants. The Classic Cafe Capri fit well and looked good with a blouse and flats for most days at the office.

    1. I agree completely, I routinely stalk Ebay for those, and the Madison Stretch Chino.

    2. Try Banana Republic Sloan. Better fit, IMO, though no cuffed ankle. Fun colors.

    3. Yes. Please bring back the cafe capri and don't bring it back with a bunch of changes. I love cafe capris. I ruined a pair of the bright citron the other day from 2013 I think. I could have cried.

    4. Thanks Flower Power, I will check out the Sloan from BR. J Crew did publish my review for the Classic:

    5. I have a navy and burgundy Sloan pants. Very nice fit and still work appropriate. Size down since they stretch a bit over the course of the day. I haven't tried any other kinds of pants from j crew since they stopped making the cafe capris.

  7. I tried the cap sleeve dress in Italian pinstripe. In theory, it should have worked for me as office attire. The wool is lightweight and comfortable, the dress has pockets, the design is relatively simple. Unfortunately the reality is that despite the elastic waist (or maybe because of it) the dress is quite shapeless. The V-neck is too low to wear it without a camisole or other underpinning. It seems very sack-like to me. Already returned.

  8. Here is my review of two dresses I'd been stalking and finally bit on when final sale was off the table. Both are going back and here's why.

First up: Collection Wool Silk Dress in Verdant Floral. Item b2328. I'm a sucker for pretty Laura Ashley-type florals and J.Crew's wool silk blend. I'm 5-2, about 100 pounds, 32A/B, and take an 00 in J.Crew dresses. This dress did not fit well. It was super baggy and pooled out in the chest area, suffered from giant armhole syndrome, and, like many of their offerings lately, had a very poofy flared skirt. Not only did it not flatter me from the waist up , but it's more of an art-gallery-opening/occasion dress than office-workhorse-paired-with-cardigan than I needed it for. The dress was wearing me, and not the other way around. Even the wool-silk blend seemed a bit plasticky to me, and I wish the exposed-zipper-on-a-fancy dress trend would die already. It's not "edgy," if that's what they are going for. I did like the floral print, even though it's bigger than what it looks like online. Colors are nice and a little unusual (black and various shades of mint and bright green). I'm returning this to either Copley or Cambridgeside in the Boston area - if anyone wants me to hold it for them or wants a charge send, reply to the post.

I also ordered the Silk Chiffon Mirabelle dress in 00P in Parisian Yellow, because I've been hankering after a yellow pleated dress for quite some time now. This dress was too loose in the front (giving everyone a free show of my chest, or lack thereof) while at the same time the zipper wouldn't go up past the empire waist. No giant armholes though, and the cap sleeves are very flattering. Color is more golden than the website indicates but it's aptly named - it's a soft yellow. My dream dress would have been more lemony, but that's not J.Crew's fault. This is an empire waist dress that ends above the knee, and has to, for the proportions to work, so it's not my preferred style. This is also definitely an occasion dress - it's too high maintenance to wear to work and I couldn't anyway with that low neckline. It would be a darling dress for a girl in her twenties attending a special event though. I think Constance Wu was wearing it fetchingly on Fresh Off the Boat to a country club, which actually inspired me to to check the website to see if it was available, and that would also be an appropriate place for it. It's definitely not a versatile dress - it's an occasion dress.

If anyone wants it, reply to this comment and I can leave it for you at a J.Crew store.

  9. I went to a store last night to exchange the Aquatic Floral top for a different size, and picked up the Cinched Tank Top while I was in there. I sized down, as is becoming the norm for JCrew, and the white is fairly sheer, but it'll be a great casual top with shorts or jeans all summer. With the current promotion, it feels like a steal.

  11. EMBROIDERED COLORBLOCK TEE (item c2695)

no reviews on this yet so i thought i'd chime in with my two cents.

i bought this one in the navy color. i really like it. i usually flop between an XS and a S and bought this in an XS. it looks really boxy online but i don't think it looks boxy on (going with my smaller size may have helped with that). it's on the thinner side and you def need a nude bra with it. i had a white bra on when i tried it on and you could see the straps thru the top gray stripe area, but nude was fine. i'm mostly a t-shirt and jeans kind of gal and i like that this is just a dressy t-shirt so it'll be non-fussy for me. it's pricey but i bought it with a discount and since this has been one of the few purchases i've made (and kept) lately, i'm fine with spending a little extra $$.

    1. Is it the Collarless Short-Sleeve Popover in Stripe? I've been trying to decide what size to order and if I should get it in petite or regular.

    2. Hi maryeb! I am usually a 0 and the xxs fit fine,so that means i sized one down. I am 5f2" and the regular was fine. It was a nice and oft cotton. It is not a must have for me.

  14. I'm wearing the new vintage cropped jeans today (in the dark wash) - oh, I love these. I find the fit perfect - they are a little higher-waisted than I'm used to (but really more of a medium waist than a true high-waist), but I really like them. I've ordered them in the faded "Werner" wash as well.

    1. I am a big fan of these, they feel great on. Agree with you about the rise. I have the Werner wash and really like them. They cling a bit in the thighs but not in a bad way. They have some stretch, which I like, but just to warn those who don't like that. I bought the white too but haven't worn them yet.

  15. Tried on the Linen Cross Stripe Tee (C5073) in store. I tried the S and XS and found the XS the best fit, which has been my size in linen tees. Loved the pale petal color but they did not have in store. SA placed an order for me so I got the Metallic Linen Boyfriend Tee, XS was sold out so trying a S. In my store (Park Meadows, CO) they were doing 40% off sale items and I picked up Slim Cargo Pant (C0487) I found this ran very large, usually a 2 in that style but they only had a 0 and that was a good fit. Also got the Linen Tee in Faded Adire, on sale for $26. Again the XS was the right size. This is a slightly shorter and boxy tee but I loved the color.
