Behind the Holiday Windows at J.Crew

J.Crew's 770 blog offers another really interesting insight into their Holiday Windows in their "Behind the Scenes: Holiday Windows (Part One)" and "Behind the Scenes: Holiday Windows (Part Two)" posts:
Behind the Scenes: Holiday Windows (Part One)
Ruth, our prop and window dresser extraordinaire,
shares the inspiration behind this year’s window wonderlands
Holiday muse: The inspiration—the idea of paper cutouts and Nordic landscapes—initially came from the lighting and home accessory designs of Tord Boontje.

Color story: We liked the idea of a white-on-white window (as opposed to red and green) because we have so much color in the clothes and accessories that we wanted to highlight and not detract from it. We decided to explore wool felt as a material because it’s warm and adds texture in a subtle way.

Season’s planning: Designing for the holidays is very different from designing windows the rest of the year because it requires so much advance planning and coordination. We start developing concepts in early summer!

Design moments: My favorite part of the design process is brainstorming with my super-talented team and pulling inspiration from different sources. The most challenging aspect is staying within budget, but it forces us to get creative!

These are so fun to read and look at!!! It puts me right in the holiday spirit.

What are your thoughts on the holiday windows from J.Crew? Are you loving this year's design?

  3. It's great to read about the inspiration for the winter windows. I think J.Crew always does a lovely job. Also nice is that they chose white -- I know this wasn't the stated reason, but in a sea of Christmas-before-Halloween this year a simple, winter-themed festive window stands out as especially chic and tasteful against much of the gaudiness out there from desperate retailers trying to get us to spend. Well done, J.Crew!
