J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Bourbon&Pearls, as well as GigiOfCa (in this post), c.angela (in this post), life as a cat (in this post), & Irina, who let us know that J.Crew had an update to its website today (click here to view online).

There are some new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here). {wahoo!} It looks like Crewcuts (click here) has been updated, as did the J.Crew Collection (click here).

J.Crew has also updated their site with some noteworthy changes:
  • Unfortunately, J.Crew is no longer posting their catalogs. (Although, we knew this from the last update. I just had hoped they changed their mind and included it again.)
  • The upper right hand corner displays an option to change country (United States, Canada, Japan, and United Kingdom) as well as currency.
  • You can calculate your state tax and apply a promotional code at checkout before logging in now.
  • Free shipping on orders of $175 without a code. J.Crew is offering flat-rate shipping of $8.95 for all orders too! It is applied automatically at checkout, which is kind of nice. This will be a constant as they shared on the "Help-Shipping and Handling" page:
"We're excited to introduce flat-rate shipping for $8.95 and free shipping for qualifying orders of $175 and up. Free shipping applies to jcrew.com online orders shipped via ground shipping and totaling $175+ after applicable discounts and before shipping, handling and taxes are added. J.Crew Gift Cards do not count toward the $175 order total. Orders of $174.99 or less will be shipped within the United States at a flat rate of $8.95. Qualifying orders totaling $175+ and including shipments to multiple addresses will receive free shipping. Orders of $174.99 or less shipped to multiple addresses will be charged $8.95 for each individual shipment."
There is also one massive update to the Final Sale section (click here to shop online). Over 1700+ items for Women, and 460+ items for Men.

I am off to check out the new Fall arrivals now... In general, this is one of their better Collections in recent years. I am loving the shapes (puff sleeves!), longer silhouettes (hello knee length skirts!) and colors (I kneel before heather majestic purple!) for Fall. This is what J.Crew does best and I am happy to see them return to it!

Loving! I own too many Winter coats, but that doesn't stop me from drooling over the Double-cloth Townhouse Trench (Item 49612; $350.00). {gasp!} It is gorgeous! And I am happy to see the return of the shirtdress with the Blythe Shirtdress (Item 47714, $178.00).

Could have been great! Oh J.Crew, you make the incredible Teddie dress (Item 47465, $198.00) and add an exposed zipper in the back. Why? Just when you started getting me again, you pull something like that.

J.Crew, you use to make pants that fit me. But in the past few years you and I have not worked out in that department. The Foundry Pant (Item 50160; $158.00) is a perfect example. What is up with the saggy crotch area? And the back view isn't that great either. You can do better than this. Much better.

Really? Who came up with the Sequin Fanfare Bag (item 49265, $498.00) over at J.Crew? Because I would like to know the back story on it. (You know it is probably good.) It looks like a hot, galactic, mess. The worst part is that it doesn't even look expensive! Maybe it looks better in person. Who knows, I might change my mind. But right now, no thank you.

What items are you most excited about and why? Which items are you surprised (or not surprised) to see? Which items did you hope would be included? Were you expecting a bigger roll-out today? Also, did you receive the latest catalog? :)

  1. I thought the roll out would have been much bigger today. I can't believe we in the UK can't even access the sale section on the US site now - shocking!

  2. I can't believe they put an exposed zip on the Teddie dress and then say it's "destined to live in your wardrobe forever". Yeah, maybe live in there but without being worn once the trend dies! ;) (Is it dead yet!)

Also can't believe they dare to bring back the dream yarn year after year. Wow.

As usual, can't wait to read what the JCA's have to say!

  3. The exposed zipper on the Teddie Dress is SO disappointing! I'm going to the Toronto store this morning - if I dislike it as much in person as I do online I will call my online PS immediately to cancel my order (I had pre-ordered it).

The Canadian prices are basically 18% higher than the US prices, which is exactly what I was expecting.

I do like the tweed and plaid No. 2 pencils as well as the new wedges. I will take a better look through all of this later, once I'm back from the Toronto store opening!!!

  4. Disappointed in the zipper on the Teddie as well, but I did find lots to love in the rollout.

My favorites straight off are the Flair Skirt, Double-cloth Townhouse Trench, Wool Maxiskirt, Double-breasted Sweater Jacket, Cafe Capri in plaid & houndstooth. I'm sure I'll be adding to the list as I continue to peruse.

  5. silver_lining, that is a huge disappointment on the Teddie dress. Why ruin a beautiful dress with that garish trend? But I sound like a broken record.

Some interesting information on the International Shipping page. Catalogs cannot be sent to the UK or Japan, only US and Canada. There is also a blurb about duties and customs brokerage so that explains the 50% markup listed as "tax". It does not sound like there is a Canadian warehouse as some people mentioned was planned.

Boo J.Crew! One very unimpressed shopper here today.

  6. I have a giant headache from trying to figure out the charges on Canadian orders.
18% higher prices, then tax added (13%) but then during a mock check out the tax went up to over 20%, pop! Maybe it's a glitch?
Then I did the calculation based on mailing to the US and it was hundreds of dollars lower.
I am very torn as I very much want those Lulu Frost bangles!
Love some of the skirts too.

  7. Only two things added to my wishlist, the tweed pencil skirt in navy and the double-breasted sweater jacket but over $172 with a 50% adjustment for a cotton sweater is a bit much.

Huuuge update to the sale section today too (apologies to those who cannot access it). over 1700 items, lots from last fall like the Timber Tweed pencil skirt.

  8. yeah... not sure what to make of the exposed zipper on the teddie dress... pre-ordered it so i'm holding off on final opinions until i see it in person... was able to use that 20% off cardholders discount so that's taking some of the sting out of the zipper...

  9. Dani, we still have to pay brokerage fees and duty on top of the higher prices. Check out the link to the international shipping page in my previous comment.

  10. I'm only toodling around the sale section, but I spied Champagne as a non-existent color option for the lady lace popover, so it must be forthcoming. Wheee!!! off to continue looking...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Bummer about the international pricing...its great to see them give those customers a chance to buy, but its a big price to pay!

Definitely think the flat rate shipping is a step in the right direction.

The new arrivals on the site definitely have a "classic JCrew" vibe, which I like, I will look forward to seeing them in real life.

I saw a few things in store yesterday (they were still arriving where I went) and snapped some pics that I put on my blog.

  12. Maybe I'm just have tired eyes, but I'm feeling a lot like Veruca Salt this morning as I peruse the new arrivals...

  13. Well, the exposed zipper on the Teddie Dress was a deal breaker for me. I had pre-ordered 2 sizes and cancelled both of them. I had planned on wearing the dress for years to come and just don't think it will have that much longevity with that zipper on the back. Now, I am not completely against an exposed zipper on certain items and have purchased a jacket and tee that both have them. However, I paid a significantly low amount of $$$ for them, so if they don't stand the test of time, I won't be as upset.

FYI: One of my orders was already being processed even though it was waitlisted until 9.6.11. Luckily the CSR was able to get it cancelled while in OPEN status, otherwise I would have had to return. If you are contemplating cancelling a pre-order it may be best to do it soon.

  14. This makes me feel kind of sad because I feel like it might be the end of my J Crew shopping. With the higher prices for Canadians, I am being priced out of J Crew. G

    ReplyDelete
  15. xoxo, can you believe it? I am NOT paying brokerage fees and duty on top of the higher prices. This is ridiculous!
I could send things to my family in the US but I won't as it is very inconvenient for them, running around and re-mailing my package, they have better things to do. I just can't impose.
I wonder what the in-store Toronto prices will be like?
Now I wish I had time to drive up to Yorkdale today!

More things I like but can't buy:
Liquid Silk Skirt: so pretty! (cries)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Something else that's new! A new message! "OUT OF INVENTORY" (in red letters) is what I got when I tried adding something to my cart that otherwise appeared to be in stock. Innnnnteresting! ....

    ReplyDelete
  17. Caitlin let us know about the prices at the Toronto store. I wonder if they will have the jewelry?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm intrigued by a couple of piece in the new arrivals: the Mona flannel pumps, the Perry peep toe booties and the Kirtley tote. All are being wishlisted until I can find a promo. Too much $ to purchase now!

I stopped by a B&M last night and picked up a couple of things. The coastline stripe tee in the orange/navy combo. This ran huge. Size down at least one size, possible two if you're in between. Nice, heavy weight to the fabric seems to make it a nice piece for the fall. Solong sweatshirt tunic in the lighter grey color. Also sized down one in this. I picture wearing it over leggings or skinny jeans and belted. Also purchased a black fedora w/ a feather trim. Don't see this on the website. Just hoping I can make this work, even with my large melon! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. FFM I've not seen that skirt before. It is gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like a lot of things, but the funky blends are a deal-breaker for me (hello pilling), as are leather buttons that make a sweater dry-clean only. Too bad, because I really like that sweater jacket.

Dani, I agree, those Lulu Frost bracelets are tempting!

I think I'm going to keep my Teddie dress on pre-order and see what I think. Since I was probably going to throw a cardi or jacket over it, the zipper won't change much for me. But I was disappointed to see the back view! I rarely pre-order because of surprises like these . . .

Glad to see flat-rate/free shipping, finally! What is the deal with gift cards not counting toward the $175, BTW? Did I read that wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I haven't checked out new arrivals yet because there was a pretty big update to the sale section and I was able to get shoes that I've been stalking on pop back! Interestingly there is now the option to pay via paypal!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dani, I was really surprised to see both higher prices and the brokerage/duty fees on top of that! It is certainly making me reconsider. The vintage tweed pencil skirt is $148 on the US site and $180 for Canadians, on checkout the total comes to $231.08, which is outrageous.

I also noticed, as I re-read the copy, that the skirt is acrylic/wool. I need my PS to check it out in person and provide the fabric content % because right now it looks like a no-go. I'm not willing to pay that for acrylic. I will definitely be buying less, the prices and extra charges are way out of line.

Sorry to be such a thread hog today.

  23. Is anyone not going to use their 20% off code for cardmembers? I had a email and deleted it! :( I can't believe I did that, but I was waiting for this roll out. I would be forever grateful. My email is: Sunnyt826@msn.com :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. xoxo: I saw the Vintage Tweed Pencil skirt in Blush in the store earlier this week and didn't like it. It seemed rather thick or bulky to me, much like the Wool Tweed Oona Pencil Skirt was, and the overall feel of the fabric wasn't very nice, IMO. I don't really think it is worth the $148 (or $180 for Canadians).

    ReplyDelete
  25. Tami, I did not get that email even though I am a cardholder! However, I did phone last week and requested a 20% off of my order, as a cardholder aware of the promotion, and I was given the discount and free shipping without any hassle.
I would phone and try that, I'm sure it will work.

  27. DaniBP: Thanks! Glad to hear that I hadn't just missed the skirt on the website before. I agree that it is gorgeous! Definitely on my wish list now. :)

  28. Ahhh Vintage Tweed Jacket, you must be mine!! This is one of J.Crew's better releases. I just added a bunch of stuff to my cart...the Double-Breasted Sweater Jacket, and the Winnie Dress. I love the print of the Gallerista Skirt but the model shot is scaring me -- why so much pouf from the side?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Alexis, I am so with you on the Teddie dress. It went from "must have" to "wouldn't even buy for $30".

I love the new calf hair penny loafers, lovely! The silk shirtdress is nice but impractical, one little water spot and it's ruined.

Enjoying the merino pencil skirt but... after wearing my tie front cardigan TWICE (which is merino and alpaca), I just noticed a huge amount of pilling. It looks disgusting now... I need to seriously reconsider buying any more sweaters from J.Crew. Even though right now I do not own sweaters from any other retailer... so sad.

Tons of other new cute skirts too! This is a pretty good collection but to me it still feels like they are trying to be like themselves in 2007 but with poorer quality that they hope no one will notice. Like the POLY taffeta dress that is over $200, the exposed zipper, and the rubber soles on ballet flats. ICK.

  30. Fabulous Florida Mommy, thank you for letting me know about the vintage tweed skirt. I did not like the Oona skirt, had the same assessment as you and passed on that one so I'll let this one go too. The only other thing from this rollout was the cotton sweater jacket but the Canadian pricing/shipping is too much.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The garden lace pencil skirt is back in stock in several sizes -- I am very torn about whether to hold out for an additional % off sale. One has got to be on the docket soon.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Talk about zippers, have you seen the double-cloth envelope coat: Double-cloth envelope coat

They have come close to replicating items from the past, flowered belts, another cord dress, the Charlese shirtdress in fine-wale cord, but it's too short (as are other skirts I like which I thought MD said they hadn't done):
-size 4 the center back length is 34.5 inches long

    - size 6 it is 34.75 inches long.

My favorite 'look' is page 7 in Jenna's picks. I need leather boots this year, but I would really like to get a pair of the Sperry Albatross Boots since I am outside alot in the fall. I'm sure I'd have them for years & years.

  35. Haha, I feel like such the contrarian this morning. I personally love the zipper on the back of the teddie dress! Anyone else? LOL. (Maybe I will bring out others who might be worried they were the only ones who liked it?) I loved it before the "zipper-gate" but now I feel like it is Grace Kelley more modernized. I have more than enough classic dresses in my closet that make this edgy bit something I don't currently own, and for me, yahoo. But I get why some of you might be frustrated. Would have been nice to have that mentioned before any of us pre-ordered.

My PS (new one, since my old one moved, sniff sniff) is SUPER GREAT. Had an issue with a pre-order being "sold out" this morning and me not receiving a confirmation e-mail for it. I had been saving and saving ALL summer for it, so I nearly cried upon seeing no e-mail and its sold out status. My new PS said that she will look into it, but that there is a delay and that may account for its status on-line. Either way, phew. One phew for seeing that the new PS is amazing and two phews that my pre-ordered lovely may still come to me after all that effort to save up for it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. BTW, I am also the doofus who misspells Grace Kelly's name. KELLY, dinagideon, not Kelley.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Dani, I did a mock checkout with a Jackie cardi - now $80 up from $60 - boooo. They applied a crazy high $25 tax in the first screen but when I advanced to the next screen it was gone...

I didn't actually buy though, so who knows - hopefully these are just little kinks!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Loving the cashmere hacking jacket but not at that price! I also like the wool pleated skirt but I think it will be a mess irl- the pic of the model's back looked horrible.
What is the name of the blue bag the model is holding in the preview pic? Lovely color!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Happy to see the $8.95 shipping. Their shipping charges were beyond outrageous. At $8.95, they are still making margin over what it cots them, even if you include the packaging costs. I'll take it, though!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think the sequin fanfare bag might be okay. I wouldn't pay $498for it though! Maybe it will hit the clearance section. Would love to hear any IRL reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love the double cloth townhouse trench. Also love all the LF bangles and the two toned circle skirt. I would like to see the Teddie dress in person before I make up my mind. Exposed zippers don't really bother me, I just know that they have a short shelf life.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Holly Tara: I also like the Sequin Fanfare bag and would love to hear a review.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Dina!
I'm with you on the Teddie Zipper! If it is generally that hated out there, prob. shouldn't have pre-ordered it.
    Will see....

    ReplyDelete
  44. I price jump on Dream Cardigans? Really? I'm sure there are others too, but I only noticed that from yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  45. xoxo and FFM, thanks for the info on the Vintage tweed pencil skirt. I guess we can assume that the every so gorgeous Vintage tweed jacket is the same material (online CS told me they are a matching set). I was hoping to buy both in the navy, to wear together as a St. John's style suit. I'll wait till sale.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I personally love the shape of the teddy dress and am not that bothered by the exposed zipper, unless it is not done well and makes for some weird lumpage in the waist to bum area. But doesn't "decadent red" bear a strange similarity to "vibrant flame" to "modern red" to ...

I love the two-tone circle skirt - but that is so not 21" long!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love the bell skirts, but won't order them because they are toooooo short. I need another 2" in length to feel comfortable.

Love the LF bangles too, actually I like quite a few of their new jewelry pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm with you on the coats, Alexis. I'll definitely be buying at least one new one this year. Love the Lady Day in the yellow!

Also, a big thank you to J Crew for flat-rate shipping. It's about time!

Can't wait for the additional percentage off the sale items--dare I dream for 40% again?

Overall, I'm much happier with the new arrivals section than I've been in a long, long time. I'm still not feeling the dresses, but the knits and coats are pulling me in. For the first time in ages I've got a full cart.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is completely OT, but I've been stalking bella jackets on EBay (mine is a bit snug, so I'm looking for a larger size) and I found a purple velvet bella in size 2 for $49.99. It's not my auction and I normally wouldn't say anything (lest I ruin an auction for a JCA), but no one has bid and the auction ends in 4 hours. The seller doesn't specify that it's a bella, but it's obvious from the picture. HTH someone.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I also like the exposed zipper on the teddy dress. It adds interest and modernizes it. Glad to see more pencil skirts, and while I don't personally like a-line skirts on myself, I'm happy for other JCAs that there are some more non-mini and non-pencil options. NOT LIKING: The peony print dress, skirt and capris (for $200) in polyester. They label it simply "poly" in the product description as if to try to brush it under the rug. Also ugh on the elf-looking slippers they are trying to sell as loafers.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I haven't had much time to look, early morning meeting. As of now I know I will definitely be ordering the long navy silk full skirt. How gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I preordered the camel trench. I am a bit ticked because it looks like my credit card has been charged for the $350 less the cardholder discount. The last three preorders I have done have shipped for $25 or so more than the price I was quoted. Not much difference, but I am still annoyed at the constant upticks in pricing.

I want to try the black jester sweater and the flair skirt. I also am looking forward to seeing the winterlude jacket in the collection lookbook. It looks like a double serge similar to the Lexington.

    ReplyDelete
  53. oh argh...I guess that's the end of my convenient ordering J Crew to Canada- my strategy is that I could only buy on sale, with % coupon codes and free shipping, which would counter the 35% duties.
The new pricing includes some of those duties in the price, to be sure, but everything is still more expensive.
Previously, I could have ordered the $120 pencil skirt for 159.95 total after all the taxes (still too much, but when you really want something...)- now that same item comes out to 167.72!
At least the free shipping coupons etc. still work to Canada.

I still love many of these new items, and maybe the unlove for the zipper in the Teddie dress means I can catch one on super sale one day!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Tami - I tried to use my 20% off cardholders discount code yesterday on the red phone and it didn't work. They have been having major computer issues and they have another code they can punch in for you. I may just call them and tell them what happened. They should be able to give you the discount. Hope it works :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I had items left in my shopping bag from yesterday (both final sale items) and logged on today to find they had both been increased in price by 16%. Are we expected to just not notice that the balance of their "flat-rate shipping" has merely been transferred to the subtotal? Love their clothes, but just hate dealing with jcrew...

    ReplyDelete
  56. I went to the store yesterday to try on a few of these new items. I only ended up with the double-serge in vibrant flame that I'm debating taking back because I don't think I want to add another wool or pencil skirt to my closet. I'm still debating though.

I love all of the colors, but want more prints and patterns. The only thing I decided to get were a pair of Minnie's in the sale section and the camp socks because I missed out on those last winter. I'll wait for a % off to pick up a few other items.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I wonder if the new flat rate and free ship over $175 will mean the end of other types of free ship codes.

  59. I haven't even looked at the site, but just reading JCAs' comments about the pricing games, too-short skirts and further declining quality sapped my interest. Maybe I'll check it out over the weekend.

Ugh, sorry Canadians (or is that Canadiennes?). The price hike is miserable.

    ReplyDelete
  60. kikki cee, I was thinking the same thing. Bet there's no more free shipping...

    ReplyDelete
  61. So far, my favourites are:

    Double-cloth Symphony Coat since it doesn't seem to have a definite waist, which is a problem with most coats and dresses for me;

    Vintage Tweed Jacket but looks a lot like the Honey Tweed from last year;

    Strangely attracted to the Meander Pants;

VIntage Tweed Pencil Skirt were it not for the acrylic content (what's up with that?)

    Quilted Sweatshirt - not sure why I like everything that's quilted;

I also see 2 new Brompton hobo colours and a burgundy Brompton satchel that's quite nice.

I still have a lot to check out, but I can guarantee you I will not go for the Big-stripe Leggings. :D

    ReplyDelete
  62. Agree with Kikki Cee...the addition of flat rate shipping probably means less free shipping promotions. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the news. Sadness... :(

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just checked it out and when I went to checkout they were NOT charging duty on top of the higher prices. It calculated out to exactly 13% (they did charge sales tax on the shipping). I did a couple of quick calculations between the US & Canadian website and the price works out to be within a dollar or so of what it would have been before to ship to Canada from the US site. Sorry, I am an accountant so I tend to do these things...

    Example: cashmere boyfriend cardigan
    US $198 + duties/tax (31%) = 259.38
    CAD $230 + tax (13%) = $259.90

So, prices are NOT higher. They are the same in the end. The duties suck but until Jcrew stops having all their clothing manufactured in China, it's part of the price we have to pay in Canada thanks to that 18% duty.

However, one thing I did notice is that I didn't see a CAD price option. From what I could see, I could choose the country to ship to as Canada, but it still shows in USD $.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love the color-block skirt, Lulu Frost bangles, Double-Cloth Townhouse Coat, and pretty much all the wool skirts. I feel that everything's pretty pricey, so it's a bit of a turn-off for me. Hopefully some things that I like will get to the sale section.

OT, how can I save the pictures from the "Looks We Love" section on the website? I pretty much suck at technical stuff, but I'd like to know how to save these pics because I love some of the styling. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  65. The Maisie dress I wanted was $395 US the other day and with free shipping the total was $485 US. The Canadian dollar is great now so I was willing to pay that. BUT, now the dress in CDN dollars is $460 and then $100 duty plus $9.95 shipping? Holy crap! I cannot stand it when American companies come into Canada and tack on a whack of money to an item. I think my many years of shopping at J. Crew are coming to an end. I am bitter, can you tell?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm in love with JCrew again!

There are about 30 items sitting in my bag and I wouldn't even know where to start narrowing it down. I guess that is a good thing for JCrew a sad thing for me and my pocket book!

I have listed some of my favorites on my blog HERE

    ReplyDelete
  67. imbachick, I tried the same item and it calculated the correct tax at 5% GST only (I'm in AB) but when you continue checkout this is what happens:

    total $ 230.00
    gift options $ 0.00
    subtotal $ 230.00
    promotions $ (0.00)
    shipping $ 9.95
    tax $ 54.97
    total charge $ 294.92

The original tax of $12.00 jumps to $54.97, which must be the duty and brokerage fees that they mention on the International info page. Definitely is not the same.

  69. I finally used my 20% off code yesterday at my B&M. I bought the new cafe capri's in the plaid wool. I bought the lighter colored ones with hints of purple and browns. They are beautiful and lined! I thought they were worth the extra 20 bucks for the lining. I also bought the double surge in the green and am wearing it right now. I have already received a million compliments on it...LOVE! Also purchased the hacking jacket in grass in store...and ordered flame, ocean, and grape from the red phone. Can't decide between those 3 colors, need to see them IRL. I love the way the jacket fits, but it is itchy on the neck.

I really want some of the new jackets and shoes that came out today, but they are just too pricey for me right now. I may wait for a promotion or for things to start going on sale.

  70. So it seems this time I’m drawn to the more basic items like the Dolci raglan-sleeve tee until I saw the price at close to $100! But love it! I would get a lot of use out of that basic shirt…and it looks soo comfy!

Like the perfect-fit colorblock tee in natural black, but ship date of 11/10! GRRR!!!

And that classic mini in felted wool is drawing me in in that beautiful red…but that length worries me. Reminds me of the felted wool mini from last year and that length was a bit short on me. Too bad this skirt won’t be in stores to try on.

  71. I have to agree with xoxo,
If the initial tax quoted on the first checkout page were correct, at the local rate on the total including shipping it would mostly break even ( with the exception of - Made in the USA - items that should be duty free under NAFTA but would now be subject to a blanket 18% price increase. )
Unfortunately what is happening is that on the next page of checkout the taxes are increasing - the same duties as before on top of the blanket increase. Ie. On a 219.00 dollar item at 13% tax it jumps from 29 dollars to 73 dollars.
I hope its a website glitch but I doubt it :(

    ReplyDelete
  72. Am I the only one who dislikes the porcupine popover? But the rest of Collection looks pretty nice!

    ReplyDelete
  73. There must be something wrong with me, because I don't really see anything I HAVE to have. Some of the classics, of course, but none of the new stuff speaks to me. I start seeing synthetic blends and my hair stands up! I bought 4 coats last year (*DIES*) so I will not be buying any more this year, lol.

If it's true that they're going to jack the item prices to offset their 'losses' from shipping costs, my love affair might be coming to an end. I think what they're doing to our Canadian and other international friends is insanity. I'm not even affected and it just really offends me!

    GRRRRRR.

  74. xoxo / TJ

I didn't go through checkout that far, but I trust you guys, so I too hope that it is a glitch. I am thinking it MUST be considering how closely the items work out added to the first page calculating correctly. If it's not a glitch, well, Jcrew just shot themselves in the foot in the Canadian market. They surely can't think we're going to tolerate getting hit twice with duty fees!

Still curious what the pricing will be like in the store. Planning to head down tomorrow to check it out but if anyone makes it there today, can you please post how they compare to online pricing? Thanks!

  76. Back from the Yorkdale store! Prices in-store are the same as the new Canadian online prices. They have some of today's new arrivals but selection is definitely limited (for example, they had the No. 2 Pencil in black, charcoal, viridian green, plaid and the pink tweed, but not in purple, flame, camel or the navy tweed and the Hacking Jacket only in charcoal, grass and flame). The shoe selection is decent (they have the new wedges, the leather Mona pumps, a lot of ballet flats, the Pia Calf Hair Pumps, the Biella High Heel Loafers, the Greer platforms). They have a lot of cashmere, tights and belts. The jewelry selection is pretty on par with what I see in US stores. They also had a few bags.

    A few reviews:

Tweed No. 2 - I found this to run a bit small in the hips and would personally size up one so it wasn't skintight. The tweed was fairly large in scale and did look like it would snag/pill fairly easily. It added a bit of bulk but nothing crazy (and I'm smaller on the bottom so I'm fine with that). The colour was pretty. I liked it but certainly didn't have to have it.

Plaid No. 2 - Love the colour, love the pattern. The wool is VERY thin, though, much thinner than the solid No. 2. I could see every lump and bump from a t-shirt I tucked in.

Cashmere Cable Sweater - Loved this and the colours are to die for.

Blythe Shirtdress - This is lovely on and TTS (though you might want to size up one if you have issues with button gapping), however the silk is SO thin and the belt looks a bit cheap to me, so I didn't want to pay $204 for it.

Merino Pleated Skirt - Loved this - so flattering. I really hope the wool holds up well.

Sorry for the marathon post! If any Canadians have any specific questions about the Yorkdale store I will do my best to answer them!

  77. momoberry - I'm w/you. I really want to clip those photo's to polyvore or upload them to blogger and I can't.

The best I could do so far was (sounds extremely antiquated but heregoes)to center the photo on the screen, take a 'Print Screen' shot (press the print screen key on your keyboard). Open MS Paint or MS Word, and paste it there. You can upload MS Paint files to blogger but I couldn't get them sized large enough for my liking. Then they are 'fuzzy' if you take them into Polyvore.

If you want them for your use, at least you can save the MS Paint or MS Word doc on your computer for your own use. Hopefully they'll be in a catalog.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Momoberry and maryeb, to save the pictures in a very simple way you can use MS Paint. When you have the picture up on your screen use the keys ctrl-alt-PrtSc or fn-PrtSc to save a copy of the screen into your buffer. Open MS Paint and use Ctrl-V to paste it in. It will paste the entire screen shot but you can crop it in paint. You can paint into MS word as well but it's rather clunky to use.

I'm sure there is a way to do this on Apple technology as well but my husband and his Apple products are not here so I can't check.

There are no doubt better ways to do it but that is how I save the pics.

    HTH

  79. Roxy - The Vintage Tweed Jacket is beautiful!! I got it in Mustard with my 20% cardholder discount last week. (Love your Anthro blog too by the way!!)

I reviewed the Vintage Tweed Jacket earlier this week and I don't think it is too thick or bulky at all. That material on a skirt might be, but on a jacket it really works. Very reminiscent of a Chanel jacket. I know that I will wear mine a ton this year!!

Really liking the Cafe Capris in Houndstooth. They just opened a new store in Phoenix, and I have gotten two postcards for 20% off my purchase of $150. Fingers crossed that they have those in stock!!

  81. J.Crew has unbelievably marked up the pricing for Canada by as much as 15%. Add duty and taxes and you're paying almost $150 more USD on $300. Complete crap, and unless they revert this decision, I am through with J.Crew!

    ReplyDelete
  82. iheartjcrew: You are not alone, I dislike that porcupine sweater immensely!

  85. Yesterday I could have ordered a pair of J Crew's mens New Balance 1400 sneakers and paid $130 plus shipping, taxes and duty. Now I pay $150 for the shoes, but I still pay the same (flat rate) shipping, duty and taxes. Unbelievable. I've got a few gift cards that I need to use up. After I've used them up, that's it for me, I refuse to be taken advantage of. Unbelievable decision on J Crew's part.

  86. Clicquot, I was just a few feet away from you, I was 4th in line! I just posted about the store opening on my blog here. Talk about a madhouse! I just barely survived the crush of people.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I was hoping for a much grander roll out of the Canadian website- at least a % off sale. But I don't think that all is lost for us north of the border. If I had ordered the Camille wedges yesterday they would have been $149 including taxes and shipping, today they would be $141. It seems they have calculated the duty right in to the price leaving only PST/GST/HST to add on. I'm trying to think positively and I'm certain that these changes aren't going to stop my shopping!

  88. @Momoberry - I am such a big fan of the Looks We Love and Collection lookbooks. I posted the looksbools from the last few months here. I just took screenshots :)

  89. Wait! I stand corrected, they ARE adding duty on to the inflated prices for Canadian. Those Camille wedges would now be$163.24! How is that fair?!?!?! The Cdn $ is about par with the US $ and has been for years now. Now I'm mad!

  91. The merino pleated skirt is limited in certain sizes/colors--if you are interested you may want to check (although it looks like it is/will be available in-store and these things almost always pop back, right?) But if you want the XXS in saddle, you may want to grab one to be safe.

  97. Can i just say that it appears they raised the prices for Canadian buyers. It is the most crooked thing i've ever seen!

    Example: Cashmere crewneck American $168
    Cashmere crewneck Canadian $194

What is that about!?! We already get totally gorged on duties and taxes!!!!

Their cashmere is hardly worth the regular price but at almost $200 - i would rather purchase actual designer!

Way to stick it to the Canadians Jcrew - i hope their stocks fall like the Niagara!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Canadians... I have emailed jcrew to ask if there is a pricing error. Maybe if more people do the same, we will be able to show that we notice the difference and are not impressed.

The following is the text of the email:
"Hello! I am writing to ask if there is an error on your website.

In the new Toronto store, the item prices are the same as the new Canadian prices on jcrew.com, but when ordering online, it appears that duty is added in to the "tax" section. Please advise - I do not want to order and pay duty twice (I am assuming that the sudden increase in prices for Canadian items online are because duty has been included in the item prices).

    Thanks,
    Shannon"

  103. All this talk about the JCrew new site made me curious.

I am someone who spends thousands of dollars at jcrew a year and I am from Canada. Doing this calculation has really disappointed me. I guess I will not be ordering from jcrew ever again :( Unless I happen to be at the US and shopping. *sigh*

As a sample order, I clicked on the Vintage tweed jacket and Biella loafers on the CDN site.

    Sub-Total: $492.00
    Shipping: 9.95
Tax: 65.25 (BTW I don't know why they are sharging tax on the items as well as shipping)
    Total: 567.20

As I log-in and complete the check out, the final total goes up by $100!!!! Here is the breakdown I get before entering my credit card info:

    Sub-total: $492.00
    Shipping: $9.95
    Tax: $164.04
    Total: $665.99

Now I switched to the US delivery site and put my NY state UPS depot's address in and here is what I get:

    Sub-Total: $426.00
    Shipping: 8.95
    Tax: 29.82
    Total: 455.82

Why should I pay $200 extra???????? Stupid jcrew. I am so pissed off because I really want that tweed jacket. Now hopefully I will be doing a cross border shopping trip in the near future. But the closest B&M is 4 hours away :( Really ruined my week jcrew. Way to go!

  104. The French Made - you should email them the contents of that post! I would love to see what they say.

  105. The tax is the GST and the HST for certain provinces. I compared my previous orders to the mock ones and the total prices do not match, we are now paying way more than before.

J Crew is also charging duty in the base price of items made in the USA i.e. Matchstick jeans the systemalways adjusted the price when it shipped out but not now the regular price will never be adjusted.

I am now priced out of J Crew, I will only shop in a store a couple of times a year when I get to the US.

I love the new arrivals but will not be purchasing.

  106. Saving pics. I hit the print screen button on my computer. It specifically says PRTSC SYSRQ on the button and it's to the right of F12. Then I hit CTRL+V to drop that into irfanview (free downlaod). Then I can save the image as a jpeg. Hope this helps. Email me if you have questions. I'm not tech savvy either, but this one I know for sure. gigiofca at gmail

  107. Just had a chance to sit down and look at the new arrivals! (Whew...first few weeks of school are killing me!) Thoughts...

-LOVE the Liquid Silk skirt...oohweeee, just that name sounds so lovely. The navy color is beautiful!

-Merino Pleated skirt is pretty, but look closely and you'll see the edges are raw and rolling up. Boo. It's also not lined, which means with merino wool it will be static-city. No way!

-Flair skirt...this might be what I get instead of a No. 2 pencil skirt this year. Love the pine and henna colors.

    -Mona Tweed pumps: GORGEOUS!

Does anyone know what skirt is shown in this product shot? It looks like a new color of the Jardin perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Shannon, I too have e-mail J. Crew about the pricing/taxing and I think you're right that it's something that all us "concerned Canadians" should do. I'm really hoping that it's just a computer glitch. I think they'll see a huge drop in the number of Cdns ordering from them if it isn't :(

    ReplyDelete
  109. The French Made, I called and it took forever to get the details but apparently it is not a glitch, the higher pricing + duty/brokerage is correct. The cost of doing business internationally is what they say.

  110. To the ladies who asked for my promo code:

  111. Appgal, that looks like the Jardin in dusty clay IRL! The dusty clay they show in the Jardin product page looks nothing like real life! Does that make sense? I ordered it and returned because of the discrepency.

Anyway, I do not know where to begin. I love everything. I think I will just wait for a sale because I will pretty much take anything they are offering this fall, except the porcupine shirt :)

Does anyone remember in the fall look book there was a camel colored a line skirt paired with a black denim shirt? Is that the flair skirt in heather acorn?

    ReplyDelete
  112. It is not a glitch? All day I've been thinking that this must be a glitch in the new system... they've priced out loads of loyal customers, I've been buying JCrew for my entire family of 5 for years and years, I am in disbelief that they have done this.
An American friend has offered to forward my packages, that's the only way I'll be able to buy anything. I'm so upset though that I don't even want to!

    ReplyDelete
  113. I feel so bad for you CA and UK shoppers. What a mess JCrew has created!

I like some of the skirts from this release but I'm not buying anything FP given the quality issues.

I'm also disappointed Teddie dress has the exposed zipper. When I saw it this morning I was in shock they ruined the dress. As FFM said I was hoping it to be a classic piece I can wear many seasons to come. I have it pre-ordered and unless it fits like a glove it's going back.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Sara: wow! THAT Is dusty clay? It looks nothing like what I thought it would! I was excited that a new rust orange-ish color was coming out for fall!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Yes, AppGal, I concur. I have the dusty clay skirt as well, and that is it's true color...I actually like it, as it can be worn into fall.

    ReplyDelete
  116. It's NOT a computer glitch? Well, I guess my husband will be happy! How can they charge one price at the Toronto store but for those of us who don"t live in the GTA and have to order online charge us way more in extra tax? Shame on you J. Crew!

    ReplyDelete
  117. I am LOVING the Vintage tweed jacket in mustard. Its a MUST HAVE for me.

I also love the shape and color of the Teddie dress. While I'm not in love with the exposed zipper in the back, I would probably be wearing it under a white coat a lot, so its no big deal.

  120. Fabulous Florida Mommy- I tried on the new Fisherman Sweater last Saturday without knowing that was what it was. I wrote down the style number and came home and searched for it and nothing came up, then lo and behold there it was this morning in the newest roll out. I took an XS in the new sweater just as in the Shrunken Fisherman, but they fit much differently. The new one is shorter in the body and has shorter sleeves...really the more "shrunken" of the two! It is also not cotton, but rather a soft wool blend. It didn't seem itchy to me, but I'm not overly sensitive about that. I really liked it and thought it seemed nice quality. The only down side for me is that it is dry clean only. HTH! :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. Hi Sara, I the skirt to which you are referring is not the same one they realeased today. I had tried to do a pre-order on it a long while back and was told it was a holiday item. It did not have any buttons on it but was otherwise pretty close to the flair one they just released.

  122. Hi Caitlin, how was the sizing on the Merino pleated skirt? I am usually a 6 to 8 and this comes in sm, med, etc. Should I go with the Medium? Thanks!

Oh, the exposed zipper on the Teddie dress made me curse like a sailor outloud! I preordered it and now I wish I hadn't. However, I am glad to read this blog since I started thinking that maybe the zipper really is a necessary evil to keep it looking more modern, especially at my age. I will keep an open mind. But, these certainly means I am not willing to pay Full Price for it and it is NOT a MUST HAVE any longer.

I tend to love way too many items only to be disappointed once I try them on. But, right now, I am loving the Vintage tweed jacket, the a-line, longer skirts, the symphony coat (that I don't need at all) and the Mona tweed pumps.
But I must have the Porcupine shirt ASAP! LOVE it. LOL. It brings back nice memories of a camping trip across country. My DH and I chased a porcupine through the forest and up a tree to get a picture of him. Good times!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Shekster, I would say the Merino Pleated Skirt fits TTS, with some flexibility because of the stretch. It would also depend on where you wanted it to sit (i.e. on the smallest part of your waist or a bit lower). I wear a 00 or 0 on the bottom and was fine with the XS (they didn't have XXS in-store). I wanted it to sit a tiny bit below my belly button (so not on the smallest part of my waist) for length and the XS was perfect. I think the Medium would work for you - HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Hi MegCrew, thanks for the reviews! I was wondering about both of those items. The sweater color is much nicer in your pics than online.

  126. xoxo, I called customer service tonight to inquire as well, but the girl I talked to didn't seem to know what was going on with the duties, etc. I left a note for them to look into it and also told her the blogs were lighting up with Canadian clients who were VERY upset at the price change! I told her it wasn't going to go over very well if we were now expected to pay way more than we did just a couple of days ago for no good reason. I said it was especially unfair for those who aren't close to the Toronto store. She said she understood and would look into it. She did seem to lean toward thinking it wasn't a glitch though.

What I think we need is for all the Canadians on here to get on the phone with customer service and COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN until they come to their senses!

On the bright side, I just got off the phone with a manager at the new Toronto store (who apparently is a JCrew Aficianado himself!) and explained that I didn't get the coupon that seemed to go out to all the areas directly in the GTA. He said they went out to Jcrew credit card holders. I happen to have one, but I think I might have gotten left out because I live about an hour and a half away. He told me to bring my card in with me and they would honor the coupon for me! Awesome customer service so far - and glad to know we have a fellow Aficianado at the store!

  127. imbachick, I called the VIP line and not CS, maybe they have different info but I expect it will come down to the same story. I believe that it is a case of charging what the market will bear and that they are testing the waters. It may be a case of Mickey trying to position the brand as high-end/designer internationally. I won't bear it though, there are other options.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I just had the time to browse the new arrivals. A few things that I like but overall nothing that I have to have (the Hutton pants are lovely but I am sure that they won't look as good on my petite frame, unless I wear them with very high heels. I will stick to the cafe capris). I do like the liquid silk skirt but there are a lot of options out there to choose from for that price. I might try the Teddie but in saddle, and not the more popular red.

I saw the merino pleated skirt yesterday (without knowing what it was) and I unless it was a defective batch (they all had the same appereance) the fabric was uneven, like it had some kind of pattern of raised squares, but not pushed enough to look like a pattern made on purpose. Frankly, they looked cheap or ... defective (which was accentuated by the fact that they were all wrinkled). Can anybody comfirm? I can see why every body seems to love it (it looks super-chic on the model) but it hadn't the same allure in store.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I emailed J. Crew and cancelled all my preorders and anything that I had purchased that wasn't available right away. They emailed me back and said my email was being forwarded to management for their review. I think us Canadians are going to have to love the new prices, or leave it. I don't think anything will change. I am very unahppy to no longer shop at J. Crew but I cannot swallow paying more for something just because they have a store in Canada now, despite the fact I live in Calgary and who knows when one will arrive here. I will wait until I go to Vegas and shop there. I'm sad.

  130. I actually LOVE the exposed zipper on the Teddie dress! Since most people don't like it, maybe I'll be able to get at a great sale price soon !! ;) I live in the midwest where trends hit late - if ever... so the exposed zipper will have a long life here!

This is a great fall roll-out!

  131. I suspect that the answer to the ridiculous prices on the international sites may be this:

    SHIPPING
We now offer shipping to the United Kingdom through our international delivery partner, FiftyOne, and continue to ship to anywhere in Canada and Japan. See more about our partner, global e-commerce expert FiftyOne.
    WHO IS FIFTYONE?
Founded in 1999, FiftyOne is the recognized market leader in international ecommerce, operating a technology and services platform that enables U.S.
retailers with international ambition to transact with consumers in more than 90 countries worldwide.

It's not the cost of doing business internationally, but of partnering with an expensive company. If I order from LL Bean I will pay the exact same amount of a US customer, the only difference is that I will be charged more for shipping and I may have to pay Customs.
For the prices that J. Crew will charge in Europe I can find much better quality clothes here, I just lost any incentive to buy from them.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I actually love the exposed zipper. I like classic styles with a bit of a hip, trendy look so that fits the bill for me.

I tried on the new high-waisted, skinny cords in the store yesterday. I really like them. In my opinion they are more wearable for more people than the high-waisted jeans, as they seem to have a bit looser fit.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Does anyone know why if you live in UK/Ireland you can't see the sale or factory items even when you change over to the US website? I spend a fortune on their website (90% of my work clothes are JCREW) and ship to my parents house but its mostly sale and factory items. Looks like I may be saving some money in the future if I can't even see the sales.

  135. I'm outraged by the 20% increase in pricing of J Crew items for Canadian customers this week! I've been a longstanding Canadian customer for over 2 decades and will no longer be buying from J Crew. This unjustified price increase was disguised with the hype about the only J Crew store to open in Toronto Canada w/o any mention of the outrageous price increase as we still pay hefty duty and taxes as well with US purchases. The merchandise is not worth the price increase as quality as deteriorated over the last couple of years with synthetics added to many of the natural fibers. Jane from Canada

  136. I think the Foundry Pant is super cute- overpriced, but..there is nothing wrong with baggy pants if you style them correctly. Now, charging $158 for a pair of baggy pants? That's another story...

  137. I like the new flat-rate shipping. On the other hand they have really raised their prices. Two years ago the double serge wool pencil skirts were $98. Last year they were $118. Now they are $146. That's just too big of a jump in such a short time. I do love the vintage tweed jacket and will probably also get a schoolboy blazer. I will have to check out the pleated merino skirt as well. Overall good collection but not happy about the price bumps.

  138. Update: The prices have been adjusted as of today. Now the double-serge pencil skirt is $120 and the prices have been lowered on a lot of other things as well.
