"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Ibi who suggested weekly 'Looking to LOVE' and 'Looking to HATE' posts where we could all "deposit" our best & worst current experiences. I think it is a brilliant idea and will try it out for a few weeks. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs! :)

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Two of my shirts have unraveled in the wash....jcrew officially sucks green eggs and ham!

  2. Grrrrrr. Got my cashmere order today, not much was as I had anticipated. The v neck was cut like a JCPenney sweater, shapeless and SUPER long. My regular size, a small, was too big. The t shirt cashmere sweater was better, but still bulkier for a small than I had expected. The cashmere hat is ok, but I don't know how to work it without the plain knit making me look like a cancer patient. And lastly, the panne velvet bell skirt, in a 4 which is my usual size, seems slightly too small. Strike on all fronts, and there goes my cardholder discount.

  3. New markdowns scattered around the sale section. Newest iteration of the sequin-front sweatshirt is $59.99 in the dark grey color.

Some of the pieces were cut like, 50% on their first markdown (plaid blousanna tunic and raindrop cowlneck cami). Hmmmmmmm....

  4. Although I hope I don't lose out on anything I really want, I am holding on to my cardholder discount for a few more days. I feel like I am playing Russian Roulette....I place an order (I've taken advantage of the recent buy $150-$250 and get 25% or 30% off with Free Shipping) and almost as soon as the items ship, one or more things go on sale (Infinity Cardigan, pj pants, Jackies, etc.). So into the B&M I go to return the original items and then re-order to get the lower price. If I haven't worn something yet and it gets reduced in price (AND I have a code! for 30% off) I can't just let it go! I am sure the SA's at my two close by stores hate to see me coming but if JC is going to constantly and unpredictably change prices and promos (although I DO appreciate the recent % off specials), I will maneuver to get the best price until I take the tags off! Does anyone else do this?????????

  5. Just got the dreaded email: News About Your JCrew Order. I do 90% of my shopping from online stores. How come JCrew is the only one I shop at that has SERIOUS inventory issues????

I had a feeling that this email might be coming b/c my order from Friday night had still not shipped yesterday. Still has not shipped in fact.....

  6. Eloise, I got a cancellation email this week as well. It's been a long time since I received one of those but like you, the order from last week was just sitting there so I figured something was up.

As far as my other GIFTS orders, the last two finally shipped out today and they were placed on Saturday. I was getting pretty nervous because I have gifts in those orders and all it takes is one snow day and things get backed up badly for UPS deliveries.

And as usual when I place multple orders, one of my sweater promo orders has been incorrectly routed and is still taking a tour of the U.S. Turn north to Canada please! It's going to be more than 2 weeks by the time it arrives. I guess I can't complain with free shipping huh?

  7. I received the dreaded email on Saturday about the order I placed on Friday. I had ordered a bunch of items for DH and DS and decided to give the serge skirt a try in a petite since the regular was too big/long for me. I ordered two sizes to try and tossed in one of the gingham shirts.

Everything shipped for DH/DS but my three items were cancelled. I checked online and all were still showing up so I called and they filled the order again.

Then Monday night (after the second order shipped) I did get a call from customer service letting me know the first order had items cancelled and offering to do a store search. At that time, all three items were still showing online in my colors/sizes. The thought was nice, but I wished they had bothered to look at my order history before disturbing me during dinner to see that the issue had already been resolved.

They really need to get their act together on their inventory.

  8. I did some shopping with my PS in store on Sunday. Already, about half of what I bought is marked down online. Grrr... I emailed her, hoping to get an adjustment. I used the 30% discount in store, but the items were full price before the discount was applied.

The plaid blousanna tunic is actually quite nice, but it does run a bit big. It's completely sheer too, but I planned to wear mine with a cami, under a sweater.

  9. xoxo,

I hope you get your orders very soon and everything is fine inside the boxes.

I just hope my order ships today. Keeping an eye on it closely.

    kitsmommy,

You are so right. JCrew really needs to get their act together! I am glad you got notified so soon after placing your order that there was a problem and super glad you are getting your items in the end.

It was Friday night until this morning before I even knew an item was cancelled! Frustrating:(

  10. I'm getting tired of the sheer blouse look. Why can't they make a blouse that doesn't require a camisole underneath? I'd like the dot flouncette so much better if the material weren't see through.

    ReplyDelete
  11. What is with the slow shipping? I live one day away from their distribution center, and I always get my order 1 day after they ship... but lately they are taking forever to ship. It is making me really mad!

I have done a lot of shopping online lately for Christmas, and everyone ships the SAME day or the next day at the latest. J.Crew used to ship within 1-2 days but they are going MUCH slower now and I am going to stop ordering as much because of it.

I placed a $500+ order yesterday and assumed (naively) it would ship today. If it doesn't ship today, I won't get it in time for what I needed it for, and I will be returning the whole order. They also told me I can't cancel the order now, so I just have to return it all if it doesn't go out because they are so slow. Ridiculous.

  12. I hate all the sheer blouses. I refuse to wear anything sheer... I just hate the way it looks. Ick.

  13. I think it's interesting that most of the year, J Crew fans deal with primarily J Crew. But at the holidays we are all ording for different people from different websites. The differences in inventory, shipping, overall service and pricing are really striking. Just an observation.

    ReplyDelete
  14. i DARE jcrew to style the men wearing a tuxedo shirt, sweatpants, and open toe leather sandals. that's the only way women are going to realize how INSANE and UNREASONABLE the styling is on their side of the catalog.

aspirational my ass. i don't aspire to wearing sweatpants with $400 camis, or ever for that matter.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't know if this was posted anywhere else, but for those of you who are not into the recent styling...

  17. I placed an order on Saturday for the Factory Floral Ikat Swing Jacket in a size 4. I got the 30% off plus free shipping and then on Tuesday, I got the dreaded cancelation email. I checked the factory site today and of course a size 4 was available. I ended up doing the online chat and the rep honored my previous order with the discount and free shipping. I just hope it actually ships and I don't get another cancelation email.

  18. I was doing a major Christmas shop using the 30% off code, and was SO FRUSTRATED that things kept disappearing from my cart! I wish you could "reserve" something in your cart for at least, I don't know, an HOUR? Though from others' experiences, it seems like even if you make it through checkout, you might not get what you ordered.

Also, the glitter card case I ordered didn't ship, (even though it says it was included) And the chalet strip zip sweater is oddly boxy with awkward sleeve length. (Not as pictured, at all.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I got an email from a Jcrew rep saying an item from one of my orders "might" cancel. 2 days later i got the "formal" cancellation email. Haha weird. At least, he offered to do a WWFI that would last for a month I think. I'm still waiting, but doubt they'll find one since it is a very sought out item.

  20. ITA with tastymoog about the silly styling. It's not inspirational or creative or stylish. IMO it just indicates that JCrew currently employs stylists who seriously lack talent and good judgement.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wish the honchos would pool their bonus money and pitch in for new register computers. J.Crew is the ONLY place I shop where a salesperson can't look up an item and see if it's available in another store.

For that matter, every other company's website offers me the possibility to see if an item is available at a local store, and then some even go so far as to offer I can buy it at home and pick it up at the mall.

It also really annoys me when SAs give the old "oh, it's so popular, it's sold out" spiel about anything I can't find in my size before even calling the 800 number to check. Uh, no it's not.

Echo sentiments on styling. Bah humbug to the 2010 Holiday catalogue. It promises JOY on the cover, but does not deliver. Perhaps JOY got lost in the mail ...

And now just for the sake of yin/yang, a rave: Today I'm wearing what I think was called the Eloise skirt, it's black & ivory tweed with gold threads, ragged hem, from 4-5 years ago, matching doctor-style handbag, and black Cheshire jacket. Compliments every 10 feet, not even exaggerating. So here's to J.crew's spirit of holidays past :-)

  22. Please bring back more Heritage Fit items with the slightly higher rise.

  23. @ Rsizzler:

Hilarious!!! ROFL.... really ridiculous commentary on the holiday styling. Who do they seriously think they are ??! My, my..

  24. Silverlining

Thanks for the markdown heads up. I found the Silk plaid blousanna tunic marked down from $108 to $49.99. I just purchased this item w/ my 30%off Mon. I ended up getting this blouse for $34 after I had CS make the adjustment. Yeah!!

I also broke down and had them put the Colletta Coat in Rainforest Green on special search while the 30% is still active. Here is hoping I finally get my color. I got the Nightfall too, b/c my color wasn't available. I doubt I'll like it in blue, even though it's a pretty color in small doses.

  25. woops, I forgot this is suppose to be a Vent Session.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I got my cashmere order today too and I am also disappointed. I got a small in the shawl popover and it is HUGE. I am a true size 4/6 and there is no reason for me to need an extra small in sweaters. If i need an extra small, what happens to the true extra small's out there?

Also, I ordered the back-zip flats and am a bit bummed. The tuscan olive is gorgeous but they just seem less sturdy than my other flats (Corso Como, AK Anne Klein, Cole Haan, etc). Does anyone know if JC flats hold up well?

    ReplyDelete
  27. txmom: If you have placed an order online and then it goes on sale, email customer service and they will do a price adjustment and credit your account. I have done this 3 times in the last year and they have always been happy to do it. One time I called because I was using that 20% off red card from october and then the item went on promo and I thought they'd say, well you are already getting this 20% off so....sorry. I just explained that I could re-order the item right then and return the one that was coming. But she said no problem. It's worth giving it a try. Then you don't have to spend all your time returning things and rebuying....

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree, rebuying kinda sucks. It's better for everyone involved for them to grant a price adjustment.

I heard they only do those for previously full priced purchased items within 7days. That might be the case, b/c I was denied adjusting a sale item but not denied today when I had full priced item adjusted with not problem. That was w/ regardless of my 30% off card promo I used.

  29. Not a vent but I wanted to say that the short Icon trench is more than 30% off, currently marked down to $159.99, which is almost $100 off the original price of $258. This is a good quality, stylish short trench and the Icons rarely go on sale so if you've been on the fence on this one you may want to get it now. It would be an incredible deal if you are already placing an order and able to use your cardholder 30% discount on top of the reduced price. The warm taupe has pinkish undertones that is quite flattering for those who prefer cooler colors. I can't speak to the light khaki shade.

And yikes, the Buffalo check jacket is sold out already!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Crazy that the buffalo check jacket is sold out already. Gigi reported that it is boxy and basically a glorified workshirt so I wouldn't be surprised if it pops back at some point.

  31. I think 'Crew needs a better inventory tracking system. Ordered an Aldridge suit but the other day got a cancellation for the pants. Turned out it is back-ordered till Jan. 4th. Needless to say since they will ship the jacket anytime soon, I asked them to re-order the pants and will be placed in the waiting list.

Now it could also be that their tailors are super busy because I want mine cuffed.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ROFL! tastymoog I love you for this comment. I feel exactly the same! I don't mind taking a fashion risk every now and again, but a lot of it is just nutty and not even flattering. Who is buying into this is what I want to know...

I've never had an issue with shipping. I'm also about a day away and I think there have been a few times where it's taken an extra day or two, but even a 3 day turnaround (especially on free shipping!) is not something I can complain about. I've been doing all my Christmas shopping online, and nearly everyone sits on it for a week before shipping. I'm often completely caught off guard when I see the J Crew box in our lobby. Personally, I'd have to put their shipping in the rave section.

I've had items disappear mid check-out, but never experienced a cancellation after the order went through. Yikes! It seems like that's something that could be easily fixed by a few savvy computer engineers. Definitely uncool.

  33. Dear J.Crew, if your stock continues to fall this winter you can be sure it's because your sweaters completely suck. I just received the tneck and shawl collar chalet, god they are awful. Tried sizing down to the XXS but I can barely get my arms in the sleeves. The over all length is also too short but there is room in the body, so if I went with my usual size I'm sure they would be a baggy mess. Not even going to try the larger size because the knit is very loose and ready to snag. The feel of the sweaters is so itchy, it's positively scratchy, as if there was metallic in the knit. The sleeves and shoulder don't even appear to be sewn correctly on the tneck, it bunches up under the armpits.
I only paid $35 for these but they are not even worth that. My F21 sweater is nicer. I am so completely bummed that I used my card holder discount on these, epic fail. I should have saved it for a coat.
Bought the merino zip cardi as well and it is going back because of tight arms and it looks unflattering open

Can anyone suggest a store to buy decent quality sweaters?? I cannot find any that are warm, nicely fitted, and don't cost $200

  38. My buffalo check jacket came today. RL had done a similar looking piece (in cashmere with silk lining, so similar looking from a distance) a few years back, so I was really excited to receive this. Gigi's right, sadly, boxy is the word, and boxy only at shoulders and first 6 inches of side seams (from underarm down). This means it looks kind of odd from the front. On the other hand, I love the pocket placement, love the collar, love the button placement. Thick fabric plus furry lining make it kind of hefty, so you wouldn't want to wear it indoors. Ever. Thinking about returning it; thinking there will be a lot of pop-backs if JC isn't playing inventory games; thinking it's a cold day in NY today… maybe I won't take it back so fast. But I'm more disappointed than thrilled.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you silver_lining/Gigiofca and wellfedfred for the comments on the Buffalo Check Jacket. Mine is scheduled to arrive on Monday. I'm sad to hear it is really boxy but since I am busty and small on the bottom I would likely need my tailor to nip in the waist for a perfect fit anyway. With my inverted triangle shape I am used to boxy or flapping fabric around the midriff before help from my tailor, that's just the way it is.

rtfit_jcrew, thank you. I love the classics.

  40. I went into JC tonight for a price adjustment on items I purchased over the weekend that are on sale already. The SA acted like it was a major inconvinience to process the PA. I even showed her which items were on sale to save her time. This isn't my local, usual store and I won't be going back to this location at all. I'm thankful for a wonderful, easy to work with PS.

    ReplyDelete
  41. txmom, I've found that over the past year or so, I've returned more than half of what I buy online from JC. More often than not, I find things don't fit, or are of poor quality, or are further marked down immediately after I buy them and JC won't do a PA because the items were already on sale - so I return and rebuy as others have mentioned. I honestly wonder if my account is somehow flagged or something as a frequent returner (any employees happen to know if this might be true?), and at times I feel bad because the SAs at my local store probably think I'm crazy and a PITA. At other times, I feel like it's JC who should feel bad about making poor quality stuff. Also, I feel like it's to be expected when so much of their merchandise is online/catalog only and can't be tried on or seen in person before buying (including their ENTIRE petite collection, which I often need). I feel like I return so much less to other stores, and it's frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Not sure it's been posted already, but didn't know where to post this: the JC store I went in today had 25% off the entire store. Also had $10 off jewelry. The perfect shirt I got for $34.99 2 days ago was on sale for $19.99.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Shannon, Club Monaco has lovely sweaters that are form-fitting. I also like AT's pure cashmere and merino sweaters (don't go to the LOFT if you want good quality). They sell XXS online if you are very slim/petite.

Neither store is inexpensive, but CM has a 20% student discount and usually a decent sale section, and AT is always running some sort of promo.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ohhh...25% off + free shipping. Code Presents.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am really irritated that JC no longer gives PA to sale priced items. I'm only asking for one time PA even on sale items! I hate having to re-buy something when a day or two ago I bought it for a higher price.

    ReplyDelete
  46. YAY. I just want to say my package finally got here, so that rant was a little premature... but none of it fits.

I ordered three size 0 dresses. One was tight in the bust and big at the bottom (which is strange because I'm bigger on the bottom than the top), one was big everywhere, and another was really big everywhere.

I am a size 2 in designer dresses (sometimes even a 4) so how is this possible? I wear S more than I wear XS, and my pants size is a 25/26... so why can I not wear a size 0 dress? And they don't even make 00!! I am not small enough I should be sized out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. MDPA- I am totally with you. I return a LOT, but mostly it is because stuff ends up fitting weird (XS is huge, S is tiny, etc). A lot of the stuff I order they don't have in my store, so I have no choice but to order and try.

I also return and rebuy- I try to only do it if I'm getting more than 5 or 10 bucks back, but I've gotten 30 dollars at a time and that adds up! It is to the point where I don't wear stuff I buy for a few weeks to make sure it doesn't go on sale.

Sometimes I worry they will just stop sending me stuff and tell me they don't want me as a customer, but I guess they'd be doing me a favor because they cause me a lot of heartache.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Celeste- I am surprised to hear you are so happy with the shipping. When they ship it, I get it the next day, but it seems as though they take longer and longer to ship as time goes on. This order they did happen to get it out by the end of the next day and I am SO thrilled I got the stuff in time (though none of it fits because of vanity sizing, that's a different story). I'm mostly surprised you say other retails sit on stuff for a week. Where are you ordering from? I have ordered a wide variety from a lot of places and it all ships really fast!

    ReplyDelete
  49. My 30% outerwear order arrived. I ordered two Tall Colletta coats. One rainforest green, one cypress. Instead, I got one rainforest green coat and one random men's coat size large tall that didn't even have a tag on it. WTF, J.Crew!?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I purchased the "drapey stripe baseball tee" in stores and loved the fit so I ordered it in the other two colors online during the next promotion. Crazy thing is, they all fit VERY differently (at least a size). I've had this problem before with a vest but I caught it in-store. Having this happen with 3 of the same tees is making me reluctant to order anything JC online.

    ReplyDelete
  51. JS,

I was surprised to hear Celiste had no issues with shipping either. Glad to hear it but I have had sooo many.

My package FINALLY arrived today and 2 pricey blazers and 4 sweaters were at the bottom in that order and 3 heavy shoes /flip flops were all on top. The box was falling apart all around and the UPS guy had to hold it all together before he could handle it to me. The shipping dept. needs to TRAIN its staff better on how to put heavy items at the bottom and use more tape!

I really miss the days when they used to use tissue paper and package things nicely. Two buttons are broken on my sweaters as well b/c of their crappy packing methods.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My latest order was not packaged well either. The tape on the bottom was all undone.

And, I called them to tell them about the men's coat they sent me instead of the colletta coat I ordered... and also asked them to cancel the waitlisted size 6 tall colletta coat since I now know I need an 8 tall. He said ok, like he did it.... annnnnnd then I just got an e-mail that it shipped. GRRR!!!!!!!!! To avoid the $5.95 to ship it back I'll have to drive 40 min to the B&M. Such a pain. I hate J.Crew right now and will probably end up returning everything I've ordered recently.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Em,

Just went through my large order and an item I ordered in two sizes to try, well, the one I need and fits is defective in two areas. So mad I decided to return most everything else too. GRRRR.

  54. Here's a basic one: J Crew's website often has broken image links and the "zoom in" function almost never works. This has been going on for years!! I use a Mac and this is a problem with Safari, Firefox, and Chrome! Gah!
