J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. New offer is 30$ off sale and FS with $150. Code is...wait for this...MUSTHAVE. Sorry to say there is nothing I must have :(

  2. Bleeeaach. It's so annoying to see an addtl 5% off. Many of the items I ordered were on sale. Oh well.

  3. Haha. I knew they'd do that. Sooo retarded. You got me j.crew...you got me.

  4. I'm excited about the code! I knew it was coming.

What I am unhappy about is that the perfect ruffle henley disappeared at the same time the new promo went up! All the sale colors are gone, but there were plenty 30 min ago. Put them back, J Crew!

  5. I have a few pics on my blog and will have some more tomorrow, perhaps.

  6. Too bad...I want to use the code, but there is nothing I want to buy on sale section!

  8. Ok, nevermind. The 5% is not that big of a deal. Plus, some of the things I ordered are no longer in stock. Now, if there are price cuts...then we're talking a significant difference.

  9. Julienne heels, need advice!

    I ordered a size 7 1/2 and a size 8, can't figure out which to return.

Both vaguely fit, the 7 1/2 slightly tight and the 8 slightly loose. Do they stretch? Any advice? Also, with the 7 1/2, I have to have the buckle on the last hole. The 8 could stretch to be too big, but not if they aren't tight and I am not putting undue pressure on them, right?

I love the color, but otherwise don't get what all the fuss is about. When I walk, they make an awful stick noise every time my foot lifts off the sole. May have to stick some kind of liner? If this is what leather liner is all about, give me manmade any day. My office is VERY quiet and people will hear me coming a mile away. If I had paid retail price for these, I would have been quite confused.

Help me choose which size to keep!

  10. I agree, the extra 5% is a grrrrrr moment. I placed an order earlier b/c I worried that the sale would go to crewcuts free shipping.

  11. Here's my review of the return-by-mail process:

Ladies, beware if you are mailing your returns back to the warehouse instead of taking them to the B&M. I sent a few items (in the same box) back last week and when the returns were processed yesterday, two of the items were unaccounted for. I returned the Muse tank and Chevron cami from the same order; Muse tank was returned, no mention of the Chevron. Also, a skirt from another order was not processed. CS is telling me that it takes up to 2 weeks to process returns and to check back then so they can 'investigate', but I have my doubts that if they wait that long then the items will never be found (did I mention they were all in the same box?). Ugh. I have regularly been returning by mail with no incident. Is this because of holiday help, or the new business-as-usual at JC?

I'll be on them again this morning.

  12. silver_lining, I always return several items from different orders in a single shipment and the last two returns were done piecemeal. My PS checked into one item that was an exchange because it was taking forever although all the other items were returned. All she could tell me was that the return was "in process" and I had to be patient.

  13. There is one pair of cropped plaid tuxedo pants online in size 6. These fit large so should be fine for someone who is usually size 8. Sale price before extra 30% off is 89.99.

HTH someone. I love these pants. The wool is soft but not as thick as the older wool plaid pants so a bit more comfortable with the slimmer fit. The length is nice, I'm on the tall side and it hits just high enough to look elegant with heels and they work great tucked into boots. The plaid lines up nicely on the seams, which is a must IMO. Colors are pretty with gray, red, black, green and a little bronzed ochre. No pockets or belt loops, a very streamlined look.

  14. Hi xoxo! And thanks for your comments - I'm just used to mailing things back on a Monday and having the return processed Wednesday, with credit showing on Friday. ;)

This is the first instance I've come across of the returns being done like that, but am glad it's not just me. I can't even imagine what their warehouse must look like!

Oh, and to keep this on topic, a review: The drapey stripe baseball tees in cinnamon and black both went back because the white stripes were not white, but "muslin" colored. Plus, I wasn't a fan of the triangle on the front because it was crooked/off-center and looked like it was sewn on by a child.

  15. I received the Buffalo check jacket last night. I was really skeptical as others had reported that it was boxy and unflattering. Yes, it is boxy, but I still love it.

The tailoring on the details - pockets, sleeve plackets and buttons, grograin binding on the facing, quilted sleeve lining - is well done. The wool is soft and thick and the sherpa lining is not too bulky and constricting with the non-stretch wool. The lining does "gather" at the bottom hem, which adds to the boxiness but is necessary for a proper fit (just like any other coat lining). I thought I'd have mine tailored but I'm going to leave it as is for now and see how it works out. It's really comfortable and cozy.

Overall it may be a case of function over form but since I spend almost every weekend in the country I will get a lot of use out of this very functional jacket. Definitely a keeper for me.

  16. Another item I received last night was the Lace tee in cobblestone. Ick. This is a nice idea but the nude liner is a hideous yellowy nude that looks like a cheap pair of nylons, it is not the ivory color shown online. The liner does not go with the gray cobblestone color and it looked positively sickly next to my pale complexion as it shows through the lace. The top is very boxy and the lace looks like it would snag in a second. This went back into the bag and into the return box. I know some people have given this positive reviews but this would no way work for me.

  17. Hi silver_lining, wow, I wish I could get returns processed that fast. It can take a couple of weeks to even arrive at J.Crew via Canada Post and UPS is quite a bit more expensive. I don't get the return labels with my orders either, so can't use that service. J.Crew does seem to be slower with the processing and I thought perhaps they implemented a new system once we started getting the return emails. Good luck with yours, I hope it's just a delay and not a major problem.

Sorry for the multiple posts, I wanted to get some reviews out there early to help those shopping the promo. Most of what I received yesterday has been reviewed many times over so I just wanted to add my opinion where I thought it might help. Have a wonderful day JCAs!

  18. I'm noticing worse and worse quality in J. Crew clothing as time goes on. Second time I've worn my cotton pere cardigan and there is a hole in the bottom and in the torso area. Awesome! embarassing when someone else points out your clothes are holey.

  19. I ordered a Factory item for the first time a couple weeks ago. I got the Factory bling-button cardigan and was sorely disappointed when it arrived.

The knit was very loose and seemed low quality. The feel of the fabric was cheap. It was an inexpensive item (which I returned) but I guess I was expecting the usual JC quality.

Has anyone else had a Factory experience like this?

  20. I just got the solid Thandie blazer at a store and LOVE it. It's still available in all sizes in black and gray. The fabric is gorgeous, the sleeves are lined, so it's really comfy, it drapes nicely and it hangs like an expensive jacket. Good for shorter people, with the sleeves rolled up.

Has anybody tried the Ruby jacket? I just ordered it with the promo in charcoal.

  21. I just returned two ruby jackets on Friday. Fit is way off and one was defective as well.

  22. ch. - I've found the wool at Factory not that great. But I've had great success with the cotton sweaters, mainly the jackies and the prints they do in jackies. My advice, unless you can see it first, stick with cotton and silk at Factory.

I almost bit on the Ruby jacket today, but found an old post on it and saw that it didn't get great reviews. Going to save my money for when spring items roll out. :)

  23. CCS,

Yes, it is good to do a search on this blog before buying. I wish I had saved myself the hassle and done what you did. The ruby is a definite pass after reading that old post!

I am going to reorder the school boy. My online PS suggested that and said the fit is good.

    Cheers.

  24. Traversa Cardigan in the nutmeg color arrived last night. Very soft and a nice weight for winter in Los Angeles. Color is pretty much exactly what you see on your screen - a nice, rusty brown.

Definitely runs a bit small - I ordered the large and the extra large just b/c I've run across JC's weird sizing in cardigans before and I'll be keeping the XL.

  25. I wore my Colletta coat for the first time today. I ordered it in a size T4 because I wanted to be able to put layers underneath it. It's too big on me, even with two layers under it, so I wish I had ordered the T2. Too bad I already wore it! Typically, my arms are too long even for tall sizes, but the sleeves on this coat are just about right (if a tiny bit on the short side). I got the version with Thinsulate, and I felt warm enough with a long-sleeve tee, a sweater, and the coat in today's twenty-degree weather.

  26. I just got in the Hoodie fairground cardigan (muslin color) that I got with a 30% code. I love it. It fits true to size and is warm and cozy. I normally take a medium and the medium fits fine. I have so many sweaters in dark and bright colors so this is something different for me. I can also see myself wearing it in the spring/fall.

I wonder though if it will pill easily...time will tell! I haven't bought much from JCrew lately, so I was happy to find that this worked! It is a bit pricey so I would recommend waiting for another good sale or promotion!

I'm loving that there is no final sale!

  27. Can anyone comment on how the cashmere v-neck henley fits? I've searched for some reviews on this blog but only found a few. I'm usually an XS in sweaters, but obviously size down for roomier sweaters like the cashmere cowlneck and merino boyfriend sweatshirt. TIA! :)

  28. Stadium-cloth peacoat in nordic blue: Well, this was a bit of a letdown. The collar WILL NOT FOLD OVER unless I pin it there, and let's be honest, I don't want to be doing that while I walk down the street. Overall, the fit is a tiny bit too big for me, even in a 0P. The sleeves/shoulder/underarm area in particular are the larger ones. I might keep it, but I'm really not sure. The fit is not as flattering as I'd pictured.

Uh...overall...really not sure how I feel on this one. Sorry for the rambly and not at all firm review.

  29. I got the Stadium-Cloth Elements coat and the Rainy Day Utility Jacket from last week's outerwear promotion.

The Elements coat: Love it, have already worn it three times. It's true that the fabric isn't that thick or plush; when I checked it out in the store, I was surprised to find that it almost felt coarse. (Nothing like as plush as my wool-cashmere Plaza coat from some years back.) That said, it's still pretty warm. With thick layers underneath, I was fine wearing it to the freezing point (thanks in no small part to the hood). Yet I was also OK wearing it up to 50F if I didn't use the hood and left it unzipped. It does run large-ish, but I got my regular size so that I could layer under it and am glad I didn't size down, which would have been snug zipped up. I see it's selling out in a lot of colors, and I remember that the similar hooded toggle coat from last year didn't get marked down that much before it had practically sold out, so it might be a coat to get sooner rather than later.

The Rainy Day Utility Jacket: I haven't worn it yet because I want to go to the store and try on other sizes. First, the outer fabric is much heavier than I thought -- it's described as a nylon-cotton, so I had some idea that it was the weight of a light rain shell or something, but it's actually fairly thick and very tightly woven. It would definitely make noise when you walk. I'm not sure how to describe the sherpa lining other than saying it's a furry kind of fleece (as opposed to the dense, low-pile surface of my Polartec vests); the body is lined with the fleece, but not the arms. Overall, it's definitely warmer and heavier than I expected. The one thing is that it's also relatively short, maybe just below mid-hip on me (it definitely doesn't cover the rear view, and I'm petite). I think it's true to size or maybe a teeny bit big; it's hard to say because I really need petite sizes, so the shoulders felt a bit wide on me though the chest fit about right. It feels a bit boxy and bulky, though I haven't cinched it in half as much as the model pics have it. Because it's heavier and shorter than I expected, I don't know if it's a keeper.

    HTH!

  30. @silver_lining that happened to me too (same box) but after about 2 weeks they processed it so try not to worry.

I just got a my first pair of bistro pants and while they are quite long and need them hemmed(i have short legs) they fit perfectly. love them!

  31. Ali, I'm amazed you could still get the stadium-cloth peacoat in nordic blue since it has been sold out forever online and in stores, according to my PS. Perhaps you got a defective return on popback, given the collar issues. I have the same coat in nordic blue, purchased in September, and I love it. There are no problems with the collar and the fit is divine. I love the plush fabric and beautiful color. I would say your experience is a warning to JCAs since final sale is likely coming back after Christmas and we need to be wary of defective or worn returns.

  32. Silver_lining: I had the same issue with the crooked triangle on my drapey baseball tee in cinnamon and returned it promptly. It really bugged me.

My reviews of what I received this week:
    1. Shearling zip hoodie (31159): Fits true to size and I like the color. However, given the price and what it's worth I'll be returning it. It's only lined with shearling in the hood and the body and arm area is pretty thin. I'll be freezing in it and I'd rather be wearing my regular sherpa hoodie that is less than half of the price I paid.

    2. Glen plaid trench coat (34698): I love the plaid print however, I couldn't help but feel like Sherlock Holms with the whole design. The should fits fine but the body is slightly larger than I would have preferred and maybe could have sized down if I were to wear thin clothing underneath. The coat is not that thick and felt almost the same thickness as my regular double cloth Colletta coat. I just felt bigger than I actually am so it will be going back as well.

I'm keeping the Colletta coat in Nightfall blue. I sized down to a size 2 from my normal size 4 in coats. The color is beautiful teal color and I like it even more than the rainforest green I never received with the WWFIFY search.

  33. Jackie - I have the cashmere henley from last winter and it fits TTS. By coincidence, I'm actually wearing it right now! :)

  34. @CCS - Thanks for the advice! The Factory prices are so tempting, I'll have to try something cotton.

  35. Final sale does not mean final if the item is defective (which would include worn).

On the ruby, you MUST size down a size. When I read that online review you are all speaking of, I asked for the measurements of it compared with the Thandie, and it is cut large. I was told by online chat that it's supposed to be a loose, bulky fit. Nonetheless, I sized down and the 2 fit appropriately. It is literally velvet sewn onto the lining, which some do not like. I do like that, it does not feel so "formal" and stiff. There are two small loop and button closures on the front, which are ridiculous because you can see them when latched. I am going to cut them out, fold the collar out more, and cinch it with the belt (or a different belt, like the sequin sash). I like it. I just returned it because I paid 100 dollars for it, and reordered it during the 25% off, which ends up being $75. Fair price I think.

  36. First impressions of my Ludlow worsted wool gray suit (38R; 32/30): beautiful fabric very soft wool and not too shiny unlike some shark skin suits. Jacket fits TTS, just a tad looser and a bit longer than the Ludlow blue blazer. The lapel as advertised is narrow which is great because I really like the 60's look.

The pants are slim fit (not skinny) and the bottoms are wider than the ones shown on pages 124-125 of the most recent JCrew catalog. So I am not sure if the ones those models are wearing are styled for 2011. In any case, I prefer the pants that I got-----a more classic cut!

It is a middle gray color, lighter than a charcoal but not too light. Not sure if I will wear this suit in July but definitely a four season suit.

I love this suit----the styling is great and the fit is awesome. It definitely rocks with slim fit shirts and narrow or skinny ties. Since it is plain colored I can use plaid, pinstriped or plain shirts with it. It can go with any kind of shirt color but definitely it will look smashing with a plain white and a dark tie with black or burgundy wingtips and color matching belt.
