Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SUMMER sale, or to see some new FALL arrivals {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. I wont' be going. I've got a really busy weekend, so a trip to the mall isn't even possible.

  2. FYI, for those of you in NC, the tax-free status is already in effect online. I just placed an order and my tax (& shipping with the new codes) came up to $0--awesome! Should be the same for other states with tax-free weekends. Happy shopping, all!

  4. Even though it is tax free weekend I won't be able to shop. Busy weekend planned and I went to my store last weekend and did not see a thing anyway.

  5. Tax-free weekend here in SC, so I'm headed to JC first thing and then over to the Loft.

  6. I'm not sure. I just can't get into fall yet since it's still like 100 here and will be hot has hades well into Sept. ... and if there's no more additional % off on sale items, even if I do go, I probably won't pick up anything. Unless there's some crewcuts markdowns for my boy, of course. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  7. FYI: did anyone notice the sneaky 20% off shorts box on the front page? It only applies to regular price shorts, though.

  8. I need to make a return, but probably won't pick anything up. My rewards card arrived and I was excited about Fall (Khloe top, green scarf, new colors), but now I'm not sure. A bit OT, but what were your must have's for Fall?

  9. I was in the store in Peabody, MA yesterday and most of the sale items were new to the sale section I think - some pretty tees and the jackie cardigan in a couple lighter colors, along with nice suiting pants.

A number of new tops were on special - long-sleeve crewneck, henleys, etc. - around $5 to $13 off full price.

  10. I don't think that I'll be going - the B&M doesn't usually appeal to me that much, and since the erm, enhancements to the website I won't even be perusing final sale. I have a few things in my cart but can't bring myself to pull the trigger.

However, I will probably check out LOFT for the Friends & Family sale. They have some great tops and cardigans - and some color! I'm tired of 'makeup shades'.

  11. Well, one place I will be avoiding is Madewell. Just got today's email. They too have Dangerous Obsession Disorder. If you get the email, avert eyes while deleting. This, too, looks like corporate got a nasty surprise when the merch arrived from distant climes, so they decided to promote the ## out of it in the hope it would be mistaken for fashion. Eww yuck.

    ReplyDelete
  12. What is "makeup shades?" Neutral clothes to make lipstick pop? I noticed "final sale" is sticking to each item in my shopping bag-boo! Can't shop like that anymore.

  13. Went yesterday to pick up that gorgeous in-store only dream pullover in the heather cobblestone color (pics on my blog along with the herringbone bell skirt and the lace panel skirt).

Lizzy T. this pullover and the Khloe cami are a must have for me (the cami is decently priced IMO). I have preordered the cami and it will arrive in about two weeks, I hope it won't disappoint me. I also liked the new toothpick twill pants in the greenish color and the carmichael popover (as I can pair it with a lot of things that I already own).

By the way, speaking of free tax week, I just read that as a measure of the new budget for the city of NY that has just been approved they are going to reinstate the tax on goodies below $110. So better shop now...

  14. Hi Pathos - makeup shades are the dusty roses, lilacs, taupes, nudes. Don't get me wrong, I like them but I look better in true red, fuschia, navy, grey, etc.

I had the studded leather belt in my cart for a few weeks not marked as FS. It was marked with the red letters in my cart yesterday morning, so I dumped it. IMO, FS is for items <$20, which is what seems to be the norm for other retailers - not something on first markdown that's like, 25% off. If I'm gonna take a $50 gamble, I'd rather go up to Saratoga and put my money on a horse! :)

  15. silver lining,

That happened b/c silly people not realizing JCrew corp. read this blog kept posting repeatedly over the past few weeks about how their items were not showing up as final sale. JCrew caught on (obviously) we have learned from the past they use this blog against us...and fixed their computer error.

People really need to THINK about what they post.

    ReplyDelete
  16. No doubt, Genny - which is why I never posted about that.

  17. Pink Maple,

Do you remember how much the jackies were on sale for? I have a rewards card and a jackie is the perfect, classic item to spend it on.

  18. I have a question for those who have the Piazza sweater jacket - there's one on ebay but it's a small; I'm usually a medium but do you think I'd be able to get away with a small? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  19. No J.Crew for me this weekend. I have two bags full of online returns to make but just don't have time this weekend.

    *silver_lining & Genny:
seriously if people only kept those things to themselves...
Also, final sale (i.e. Clearance) should be for things below $20 or 75-90% off not when things are 1st time marked down.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's a way for them to get rid of stuff they can't get rid of for full price. For a lot of people, they don't realize that things will get marked further down because clearly...no one wants it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Isn't it interesting what J.Crew takes from this blog (preventing code stacking, etc.?).

If only they'd take to heart other concerns, like the repeated comments about the ratty cashmere.

I had planned to get up to Pacific Place last weekend, but with SeaFair and the Blue Angels shutting down the freeway, I don't think I'll fight the traffic. There are some things I'd like to try on in the hope that they'll get marked down later, and I want to see if they have any store-only accessories I've missed on-line.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have a dumb question that's OT.

Has anyone here ever had a tailor put in a padded lining on a swimsuit top? Not mega-pads, like the giant cups they sew into wedding dresses, but just like a 1/4" thick padding that covers the entire area of the top that's lined. Like the removeable pieces that Old Navy puts in their swim tops.

I just can't bear to wear a swimsuit that doesn't have a decent barrier between me and everyone at the whole pool knowing if I get cold, if ya catch my drift (LOL).

This is my one huge beef with JC suits. I adore them, but most don't have any kind of padding at all. Especially if you're wearing a solid-color top that doesn't even have any ruching or anything to distract from the, err, details, there's pretty much nowhere to hide!

I got the most gorgeous red bikini on eBay last week and can't wait to wear it, but until I'm properly shielded from humanity, it won't see the light of day.

Anyone? Is this even possible? And how the heck will I explain it considering there's a language barrier with my favorite tailor?

    Arrrgghh.

  23. Regarding the topic of Final Sale items not being marked as Final Sale and being taken away because it's mentioned on JCA, that's been going on for a few years. I always felt it took time for JC to get around to updating the items so you could get to fs items before they got to updating them. Sometimes I feel we as consumers/stalkers dig into the site before they've had a chance to complete updates (maybe not I don't know how their system works).

How do they store and update this data anyway? Do they run a mass update based on filters flagging the items as Final Sale, and then have to go back and manually update the outliers? Are the outliers item(s) returned after 60 days or more and are missed as part of the update process? Do they scan items back into the system?

Sorry, I had limited experience w/an enterprise db years ago and have always been curious about tools utilized by retail to control their products.

  24. Elaine: Target sells a product in their intimates department called *Water Push-up Pads* that should work. I blogged about them a while ago in my Swimsuits post here . :)

  25. NO JC for me this weekend but so tempted as the new shot of the handbags is beautiful (and enticing). I must have received a different madewell post this morning? Mine has the slouchy sweatpants. I am too old to wear them for anything other than sweating but I live in a major urban area and I see lots of cute, young women sporting them. Better than short shorts on the streets IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thank you, FFM! I do worry about those falling out, though. I'm rather small of chest. Are they heavy?

I'll roll over to Target and check them out in a little bit. I'd be thrilled if I could avoid the expense of having yet another item tailored!

    ReplyDelete
  27. You're welcome Elaine! I've never had an issue with them falling out and don't find them heavy, either. I think they're worth a try for the price. I also like the fact that you can change them out if you tend to wear more than one swimsuit. Good luck! :)

  28. Gaby: regarding the piazza (which is my all time favorite item!!!), I wouldn't say there's room to size up or down. The cut is spotless and true to size. My xs is my usual size and fits just perfectly. I would recommend to get your usual size or it'll be too fitted around the shoulders. HTH!

  31. IRL,

Thanks for the post and thoughts....but....

What you are thinking of regarding final sale is not what jcrewphd and silverling and I were discussing about "the secret" to final sale now being gone....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow. Large update this morning in FS section online. Over 1100 items in the women's section at the moment.

@Michelle: I did a search just now for the sale Jackies and see that the cardi's are still at $39.99 (been like that for weeks) but the shells are marked down to $19.99. If you see a colour you like, snag it, don't wait for extra%-off promo's as the one that you want will surely disappear quick as a wink! I missed out on the dark charcoal and I'm still pining (sniff). However, also noted that many colours previously sold out have now reappeared...beware of shop-worn items popping back...

@IRL: I think JC, like the Gap companies, use the .99 or .50 as filters to sort FS items. I've noticed over time that when an item is marked with .99 it's FS, and .50 it's not. The "outliers" may be as you suggest, items returned to the system that the techs haven't had time to catch.

That said, it's rather sad that they will knock a few dollars off to bring an item to FS status (e.g. Bling Button Cotton Cardi, about a month ago they were at $49.50, so not FS, and now they're at $44.99, so FS).

Way back when I worked at the Gap, the first mark down is 30% off, the 2nd mark down is another 30% off, which totals to about 50% off. Still not FS until months and months later when it's down to 19.99 or 9.99 or some such puny price. Now, I've noticed the Gap and BR applying FS on items costing as much as $79.99 So JC's not alone in this enterprise.

When I spend that much money, I should have the right to return it (tags on, new condition, all perfectly reasonable) if I so chose. Just my 2 pennies.

  37. @Elaine, another option is the lightweight molded bra cups available at well-stocked fabric stores such as Jo-Ann. You can just tack them down the the facing of the swimsuit--minimal sewing skills required. I've used them for an evening gown but I believe that they are designed for swimsuits.

  38. Browsing sale just now, I see that the fug Marot suiting dress is already marked down by $50. That dress was a disaster. In addition to being icky polyester and open to the navel, it has the dreaded side zipper--plus, the zipper is too short, so I practically got stuck in the dress trying to pull it over my head.

    ReplyDelete
  39. GAP's final sale is only items ending in .97 and by then the price is usually excitably low (and I love the rare occasion I find something perfect;)

Up until now..I think the JC website just wasn't holding onto the final sale *mark* when it came time to checkout..but now it finally is. =/

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hexicon, you are killing me with the details of the Marot suiting dress. I once had a suiting dress stuck on my shoulders and could not get it off. I was in a hotel room thousands of miles from home and had to call one the hotel staff to help me. Major embarassment and being the claustrophobe I am I was in a total panic too. I will definitely not be purchasing the Marot dress, thankyouverymuch!!!

  41. OT - I received the Lands' End Canvas Motocross Jacket in Gray Sky today.

I ordered my usual size M and it fits TTS. The canvas fabric is sturdy yet soft. The color is a true very light gray, I thought that the name Gray Sky may imply blue undertones but that is not the case. The jacket is well-tailored for a close fit one would expect for a motocross style. The pockets are nicely placed and the buckles at the side allow me to nip in the waist, which is a nice touch.

Overall I'm very pleased with it, especially for the $69 price. HTH someone. Thanks to silver_lining for bringing my attention to LE Canvas fall offerings last week.

  42. OT: I have a 20% off coupon for full priced items at Talbots different from the teachers coupon. Enter FB50k at checkout. It's valid two days only but it's for everyone (not only teachers). To print the store coupon access the Talbots page on facebook and go to the fan offer tab.

  43. Closet Crisis--you are so right. I wondered why some of my sale items weren't marked "final" now I see it was because they had only undergone first markdown and were not at the terminal stage yet. Another website I peruse has two sale sections; one for regular sale and a separate one for final ("enter at your own peril"). I think it is a great idea--no confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Genny/SL/JCPhD: someone posted the exact "secret" last week on the blog, not just the usual mention that certain things weren't showing up FS. I posted below and told the poster they should remove the comment, which they did, but prob not in time. I was conflicted to even say that b/c I was afraid of calling attention to it, but I thought it was worse for it to stay up like that. In that person's defense, it looked like a new poster who doesn't know that JC big brother uses this blog against us!
I will not be buying anymore FS now. I only partook b/c I knew the secret. I think a lot of ppl were encouraged to pull the trigger when things didn't show up with the red lettering, and I thing FS orders will show a drop off.

    ReplyDelete
  45. gem twin, that wasn't it. you used to be able to get unmarked FS stuff even if it had been lingering around for numerous markdowns.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh I just realized the Final Sale secret change too....

That's really going to cut down on my spending, I only bought final sale because I was able to do that.

    What a bummer.

It must have just happened because I was able to do it last week.

That's so sneaky and creepy on their part.

Oh well less money for J.Crew then

    ReplyDelete
  47. FFM: Thanks for the link to your swimsuit guide. I might have to try that padding. I've had to return about 4 swimsuits from JC all because they didn't have that lightly padding they used to have from years ago. Are they even skimping on this? I don't want to pay $50+ for a swimwear that doesn't have modest coverage for the chest area Elaine mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @hexicon: you made me LOL in my paper-thin walled office. thanks.

@Cass et al: **lightbulb** No, still don't know the exact secret, but I can guess what it may have involved. Bummer for you all who had been able to enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  49. gem twin: some items ending $.50 do not show up as red 'final sale' on the cart. JC of all retailers choose to place ALL sales, even first markdowns to the Final Sale section (during the dreaded Final Sale period).

Yes, Cass and Pakcola, JC should notice the drop in sales as JCAs smart enough to notice this 'secret' will no longer partake in FS. Like someone suggested customers new to JC don't realize there are 2nd, 3rd markdowns when things don't sell. If we all sit out maybe we can come to an agreeable final sale price.
Maybe JC's banking on newer customers to buy their final sale section. Or maybe they just don't care since Mickey is so focused in his Madewell brand. Just my 2 cents.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What is everyone talking about? I feel so left out :(

Anyway, I do have to return to a B&M this weekend. I bought to pairs of the matchstick cords (one in cement, one in the pinky color, the proper name which escapes me right now) and am taking back the pinky color pair. It's a gorgeous color but I can't seem to find anything to go with it. I tend to buy a lot of the gray colored times and with the pinky color, it feels kind of 80's or something to me...Any suggestions out there? Oh, I think it's Warm Taupe....

I also purchased the side zip sweatshirt in the dark gray but am not sure I'll keep that either...When I got home I realized how much I'd spent on what is basically a gray sweatshirt...I like the little zipper but ...well not sure the style mileage I can get out of it.

  51. Tried on a few items this morning, but didn't get any of them. I like the merino vest, but vests tend to hang in my closet more than they get worn. Loved the rimini, but it will be months before I can even think about wearing it, so I'll wait for a promo or sale. I tried on an open cardi (no buttons or hooks) that I don't see online - it was shapeless. I liked the striped pocket tee, but will wait for a promo or sale. The waverly chinos were okay, but too long. Why didn't they make these in short? I might pick these up on sale b/c I liked the way they fit but I'd have to wear a slight heel or roll them. I tried on a ruffle vest (again, don't see it online) that I hated! I love the glass pools bracelet in english saddle, but not for that price. It is large, but didn't feel too big for me. :) They had just gotten in a ruched cardi in light berry, apricot, and light gray - I saw this from across the store. It looked promising and hopefully I'll get to try it on next time. So, I bought a white jackie and ordered the ivory striped always cardi. I told my ps I'd like to see more color. :)

  52. Cass and others,

I am hoping there is a HUGE drop off in final sales for JCrew. I am so disappointed right now.

I guess it really doesn't matter and someone could just post the secret now for all to see....

I think there have been just too many posts, Cass for us to catch them all....people just did not think and/or were to new to JCrew to realize the damage they were doing.....

  54. So now I understand what you are all talking about...So Jcrew fixed the glitch! I only found out about the "secret" by chance as I order so much online. I was well aware that it was not wise to divulge it here...I just tried a mock order using my way and now it doesn't work anymore! Oh well, I'm glad I ordered everything when I was able to unmark FS...Now just waiting for my 4-5 orders to arrive...

  57. OT, but I just got a mailing from Banana Republic with a 25% off coupon (it also includes a 20% coupon).

I also received a Garnet Hill catalog. They had some cute stuff (a cardi that looked like the Maya). Has anyone ordered from them?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I also knew the "secret" but never commented on it. Every time I saw a comment such as "my sale items are not showing up as Final Sale" (and there were a lot of comments like that!)I would cringe thinking JC would notice and figure out why. I felt kinda bad not sharing it with everyone here but i know JC reads this blog so obviously did not want them in on it. From reading your comments i see that's not the case anymore..bummer!
Just curious, if the "secret" does no longer work why not reveal it?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I guess I don't understand the fuss. If you aren't sure and it's final sale, don't buy it. Final sale is not a new concept. I made it thru 7 years of college working retail and have friends in the retail world as well. I know restocking is expensive and hard on the clothes. If JC really reads this they know how upset we get by less than perfect deliveries. And I am NOT an employee or in the fashion business.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It's true that "Final sale is not a new concept" but it depends on what types of stores we're talking about. I can understand if a T-shirt is $15 retail price, the businesses wouldn't have the profit to afford restocking merchandise. However, to me Jcrew is a par with businesses like Nordstrom and Anthropologie (the other two places I shop at) in terms of quality and pricing. So I just don't see why Jcrew should have FS items. How much I love Jcrew makes me end up keeping most items I buy, but more often than not, when it's FS, I stay away from them.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I wouldn't mind final sale if the items were marked down as far as JC could go. The Loft does final sale, but not until items are ridiculously marked down. I think items that are still priced high, or are only on their 1st or 2nd markdown should NOT be final sale. JMHO

    ReplyDelete
  62. Dropped by the Prince St. store in NYC... got the metallic sequined bell skirt in the gold dust color (style# 30310) which is a store only item according to my PS. Surprisingly it's $147 cheaper than the online version (retail for $128)!!! Not sure what's the difference... maybe the fabric and sequins are different? They look very identical to me though! There were like 3 skirts left by the time I walked out the store... not sure if other stores carry it since the Prince St. store is kinda like a collection store...

    ReplyDelete
  63. Regarding the Final Sale secret, it's always disappointing when one of the advantages is taken away. Especially when people are posting things with the good intention of sharing helpful hints with the JCA community. :(

I have three ordering "secrets" that I have never seen mentioned in blogs (thank goodness), and they have saved me a good deal of money. While I would love to share, it would be the death of them, I'm sure. But, I'm also pretty sure that a few others on this blog are aware of them too, just based on what some people post. It's kind of fun to have a secret that is shared without sharing a word.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Jean, my b&m was in the process of putting them out and it is not a collection store. My ps mentioned it to me and when I told him I had no where to wear it, he jokingly said it would be perfect for school. :) It is a cool skirt! Amazing price, too, considering how much their special items usually cost.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think a lot of people are onboard w/ regards to not buying FS. I woke up this morning to around 1,200 items in FS & now it is still around 1,027. That's unusually slow based on previous observations. That's roughly 12 items sold per hour in the past 14 hours. I won't be surprised to see these items popping back same time next year. It takes a very confident retailer like Nordstrom & Anthro to have no FS. They wisely know that if customers are happy with the product & the price, returns should be manageable.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Went to GSP Paramus to make bunch of returns. Tried on afew things from new rollout. Very dissapointed in Bell skirt in henna, it is actually more orangy/rusty than the the red I was hoping for. I did not like the wool either. LIked the herringhbone version better but it is nothing special. THe Matisse Blue and warm Honey in cashmere are gorgeous. I lked the shape of cody cardigan. I also tried the MacAlister wedges and I loved them. Could not justify the price but they were super comfortable and cute looking. Size up in these. SA told me they are flying of the shelves. Went home and noticed that the brown version is backordered until December. I guess I will have to look elsewhere for a cheaper version.

  71. Here's a suggestion for JCrew: now that everyone from Walmart to Neiman's is showing ruffles, ruching, comic-strip minis and craft-project "details" -- all of which is probably careening toweard early markdowns -- isn't it time for JCrew to show some true creative spirit and try something else?

What brought this on, you may wonder? An email from Nordstroms showing what some poor deranged soul has "personally picked" for me, including a tweedish miniskirt made of ruffles and some bags I could never even lift. It's time to stop the madness!

  79. In the last two weeks I've bought five pair of Waverly chinos, the Coal Cielo cardigan, about seven gingham shirts on FS (all the colors) a couple pairs of the Scouts and a few perfect fit crewneck tees. The giant gingham shirt turned out to be my favorite because the fabric was not thin but I loved them all.

There are a couple cashmere cardigans I want as well as necklaces and shoes. I think I need a 30% coupon.

  80. Hi Dinagideon, I agree! I don't need the Spanish metal sequins either! The store version is equally beautiful. When I saw the skirt through the Fall preview booklet, I so wanted to get it but not for $275! I'm so glad that they have a "inexpensive" version of the skirt and love the pockets!
