J.Crew's 5th Sample Sale Still Going On! :)

As mentioned in an earlier posts (refer to here and here,) ClothingLine (click here) is currently hosting a J.Crew sample sale in NYC. For the event's days/hours, click here.

Today was the day that, "bags, jewelry, and footwear will arrive". However, many JCAs were told that they would arrive this Monday. Jean (in this post) shared yesterday "... no shoes but lots of bags... including some small and medium size leather bags. I got a yellow chiffon organza tote bag (with leather handles) for only $25! There are also some clutches. According to the SA there, shoes will be available tomorrow. The clothing selection is the same as it was on the first day."

Also, "thanks!" to many of you, including the following below, who reported back about their visit to the sale (in the September 10th "J.Crew's 5th Sample Sale Starts Today! :)" post).
  • Jean shared: "Yes, the same old $60 cashmere sweaters. This time more stocks (samples) but prices are outrageous! ...Quality isn't good as I saw some rips or tears inside the jacket (lining). ...Yes, many is written with the word "SAMPLE" on the inside of the garments including the white/ivory color! ...According to the people who work there, bags and shoes will be available next Monday."
  • Leigh shared: "... There were signs for how much things were but no prices on the actual clothes. $60 cashmere sweaters, $40 wool sweaters, $55 for jackets, $150 for coats/outerwear, $20 tees or 2 for $30. Some Collection leather coats for $299. Special occasion dresses were $75 ... Most of the coats/outerwear were size 6-8. The clothing is separated by color instead of size which I found a little annoying since you have to go through everything. ... Cashiers are doing everything by hand/brain so definitely do your own math first. My cashier didn't clear out the purchase before me so she had to re-ring it. And yes, accessories, bags and jewelry will be there on Monday - and so will I!"
  • Sonia shared: "... went to the sample sale in NYC as well and what a rip off. I left with nothing, what is the point when you can get better deals when Jcrew has their sales and the sales on line. ... Your better off waiting for a sale at the store this way you can return stuff in case you change your mind. ..."
  • MN2NY shared:"... overpriced and staff is very crabby!! I walked out with nothing! Originally, I went up to the register with 3 items - 2 jackets and a scarf. The jackets were hanging on the "casual jackets" rack so I thought they were $55 each. At the register the lady said they were $149 each! ... Then she rang up the scarf (the sign said scarves were $25) and she said it was $40. ... I did see a small leather purse that I wanted but it had a broken zipper and the strap would have to be replaced because it didn't match - priced at $79. ..."
From the comments above, it sounds like the same merchandise (and similar prices) from the sample sales they had the last four times. :( I am not sure why J.Crew or ClothingLine doesn't make the decision to lower their prices to sell off the merchandise. It seems like it costs a lot more to hold the sample sales (e.g. pay ClothingLine & the employees these past 5 times), than just selling off the merchandise (at reasonable prices) during the first Sample Sale.

The location for the event is:
Clothingline | SSS Sample Sales
261 W 36th Street
(between 7th & 8th Ave)
2nd Floor
New York, NY 10018

Will you be attending this latest sample sale before it ends? If you are, please let us know! If you could also share any information (e.g. merchandise selection, quantity, prices), it would be greatly appreciated. :)

  1. Boy, that sounds bad. High prices for damaged goods. I would never go. I used to go to the big "warehouse" sales in IL but the prices were better and quality was overall fine.

  2. I agree that it sounds really bad and like a waste of money to continue to pay Clothingline to have the sales. At the time of the first sale I really wished I could attend. However, after hearing all the negative reports I wouldn't go now, even if I did have the chance.

  3. $150. for coats? I have several coats (five maybe) that I paid $75-90 at end of season a couple of years ago. New, with no "sample" written on them. Same with the cashmere. But if people are paying this much, they will surely sell them to them.

  4. Ok, I just got back. Shoes were out today. AWESOME. Current and past season shoes, some stuff is still on the website. They also had a great selection of boots and men's. $65.00/brand new, NOT samples. I got two pair of ballet flats.

Prices today have been reduced, Crewcuts had a great selection, $30 for a little girl's cashmere cardigan. I got a cashmere t-shirt for $35 and all other cashmere sweaters have been reduced to $55 each or 2 for $90.

If you are looking for past season styles, this is actually the sale to go to. They had tons of Astrid Berry jackets and another little jacket from last season that is similar. Coats were nothing spectaular, skirts and pants were blah. Tons of bridal, and it was first quality too! Anyway, it's worth checking out today, if for nothing else, the shoes. People were going crazy though over the shoes, fyi....

  5. Oh, and it was fairly busy...a lot of people leaving with bags. True, the staff is rude, but expect nothing else for a sample sale...it's not like it's a B&M.

  6. Shoes were awesome! I got a pair of new Nottingham riding boots for $99! (They are $298 on the website.) Very glad I ventured back after checking out the sale's lame clothing last week.

  7. Doesn't sound like a J. Crew sample sale at off! How disappointing. The last sample sale I went (in July, I think) wasn't great either. Their "deals" weren't really deals at all. You can get MUCH better deals in the sale section at jcrew.com!

  8. Summer: I would love to go to a warehouse sale- they sound amazing! :)

FFM: LOL! I know how you feel. I could go if I really wanted to, but I don't even want to bother with the travel. ;)

Laura & Jihan:: I know! It's kind of weird that J.Crew and/or ClothingLine would price the sample pieces higher than what the customer could have gotten online at the end of the season. Not sure why.

JC: THANK YOU for sharing the details from today!!! The shoes at those prices sound fantastic! :)

Jeadamiak: Congrats on the boots! And for a great price too!!! :)

  9. I agree with JC & Jeadamiak. The shoes collection is awesomne! It's really like the wall of shoes except they're scattered on the tables and floor. Found some really good deals like the Floret patent slingback that I almost wanted to buy from the retail store for over $200! Scored it for only $65 with no tax! Also got the Nottingham high heels boots for $99! Retail for $325.

With the price reduction, they attracted more people. The best stuff (esp clothing) is pretty much gone and I didn't really see many restock. There were a long line at the cashier. Tomorrow is the last day and I might consider going back if I want to exchange anything. Shoes and bags are no exchange though. :(

  10. I headed back for the second time this week hoping to get some great deals seeing that it was the last day of the sale. And it was more or less hit or miss. Fantastic sales on jewelry (everything $15) and still a good selection of shoes overall which are a steal.

Clothes deals were not so great. If you need basic tees and tops it was a bargain if you could find something that did not have SAMPLE printed on it or have a rip in the back. Not sure why a number of tops had slash marks through the back so triple check before purchasing.

Dresses were still great selection but overpriced at $60. Whatever happened to the old J. Crew sales where they would knock off half of the starter prices??

Overall if you have time to spare and feel like really hunting go for it!
