J.Crew In The News: Spotted at Crewcuts

"Thanks!" to MCC who let us know about an entry over at Celebrity Baby Blog (click here). Jessica Seinfeld (author & wife to comedian Jerry Seinfeld) and her three kids were photographed shopping at a New York City Crewcuts. She totally dressed the part as she was wearing J.Crew's Printed Kelsey Ruffle Top (Item 19683; $98.00)- and she looks great with it too!

Now, I am not a huge fan of the Kelsey Ruffle Top (Item 19064; $88.00) . (Refer to the September 2nd "Love It or Leave It: Kelsey Ruffle Top" post). However, I do like the polka dot version. What can I say, I am sucker for polka-dot prints! ;)

Incidentally, why is the solid Kelsey priced at $88 while the polka dot version is priced at $98? They are both made of "luxe silk". So... what's up with the extra cost for the polka-dot print? J.Crew did the same thing with the Victoria tops which were both made of "silk habotai". The solid Victoria Ruffle Cami (Item 99742) was originally priced at $88 while the dotted Victoria Ruffle Cami (Item 99930) was originally priced at $98. I must be missing something. Or maybe J.Crew charges more for polka-dots because they know suckers like me will fall for them. ;)

What are your thoughts on the Printed Kelsey Ruffle Top? Do you like the polka-dot version of the Kelsey more than the solid? Why do you think there's a price difference between the solid camis versus the print camis?

  1. I ordered the Kelsie top in the dot print last week and received it on Monday. It is adorable! I didn't like it at all in the solid colors, but the print is very cute.

Unfortunately, the size 4 I ordered is really huge on me around the bust, but is far too long and is tight at the hip (typical problem for me with longer tops as I am pear shaped). If they had a petite size, I would be all over this.

However, I do not understand the price difference.

  2. That's a good question, why are polka dots more expensive? Maybe each dot costs $1 extra to print? Haha, I have no idea, but I do know that I prefer the dotted version to the solid ones!

  3. Good question. I wonder if it's because it takes more work to make the dotted fabric and is more costly for j.crew to buy, therefore the higher cost for the consumer? I have no idea.

I have to say that I like the solid colors better than the dotted pattern. I am not much of a polka-dotted person. I wasn't bowled over by the Kelsey when I tried it on last weekend, but also didn't try it on with a cardi, so that may be the clincher. However, I adored the color and the fit of the Kelsey (I did have to size down, though) I do have to say...if they made the frances in that plum raisin color, I would snag it in a heartbeat!!!

  4. the printed fabric is probably more costly for JC to buy, hence the higher price.

  5. Like others, I'm guessing the patterned fabric simply costs more. Makes sense, considering that often patterned fabric you buy by yard for curtains or pillows or whatever is more pricey than the solids. In this case, I prefer the patterned Kelsey, too, but that plum color is gorgeous as well.

I'm tempted by the polka dot version, as I think it would look adorable with the Minnie pants (which I love, but haven't bought because a) I have three cats and know the minute I put these on they'll get cat hair all over them and b) I'm not sure what to wear with them) but I've had terrible luck with the ruffles. I always end up looking like Little Lord Fauntleroy in these kind of tops.

  6. The print fabric costs more than the solid fabric; that's why J.Crew sell it more expensive.

OT - I dropped by the store yesterday and saw the black/white printed tiered cami (in store only item?) on sale for $69.99, orig $98. Only the solid papaya color is on sale for $59.99. The ribbon/bow top is now $19.99 and so does the grand corsage top.

  8. Really OT - I finally recieved the Oona Tweed coat - The texture of the fabric is quite nice, soft not itchy at all. The coat is well lined, well made in general. I am
5'2" and typically need a P2/P0, I got a size 0 regular as no petite was available. The shoulders are a bit big, but not too bad with a sweater under, and probably would be needed as the coat is generally light and somewhat thin, although doesn't appear that way on the photo. The back band is a bit too high for me, ends up being above my waist, about 4 inches. I would have to reposition it. The flare-out is quite significant and the pleat stays closed as there is no movement I can make that would strech the coat to open the back pleat. The coat looks too big on me. The only way I found that I could wear it well is with a wide belt - then it is really cute - but for $550? Unfortunately - it's going back. Hope this helps.

  9. Jean- I think the papaya is marked down so much because they have been overdoing that color. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but this is going on season 4 of papaya (or something similar in orangy-pink) and I think they have to give it a break for awhile! How about blue or green for a change! :-)

  10. Hi Jemma Ruby, I agree! The papaya color is difficult to wear. I'm not surprised that it's marked down. I'm hoping they mark down the other colors of the silk tiered cami as well!

  11. I bought the Kelsie top in the dark gray color and I have to say it is really cute on! It looks great under the navy schoolboy blazer as well!

    Just my 2 cents.

  12. I have the Kelsey top in plum raisin. I wasn't sure about it, so took it home to try under cardigans and jackets--and that convinced me to keep it. It feels really nice on. Try layering it under things in the store, if you are considering it--you might like it better that way.

  13. Canadian--
To follow up on your OT post about the Oona coat, I ordered it too and was also disappointed. I'm normally a sz 2 in J. Crew due to my bust (including in other coats like the Icon), and so I ordered the coat in this size. The coat was HUGE on me. I definitely had room to size down, but at 5'10, the sleeves were already *just* long enough. I agree with you that it was soft, but thin--not OK for a Chicago winter. Back it went!

  14. I have to say, I do not care for the Oona coat or the black tweed skirt for that matter. The large-scale tweed will look very dated in a hurry and all the IRL photos I've seen of the skirt are very dowdy and unflattering. The large tweed was popular back in the late 80's early 90's and should have stayed there. The Oona coat is not a classic cut either, too of-the-moment for the price. I didn't want to say anything at the rollout but now that a couple of people have given negative review I don't feel like such a party-pooper. Big time pass.

  15. Jean - thanks for the tip! and here's another: the coated canvas cocteau tote is on sale from $68 down to $39.99. Not marked, but rings up as such. I love my lilac/pink one and was srsly thinking about picking up a yellow.

There was a new striped black or navy and white crewneck sweater with adorable buttons (about 5-6) up the sleeves starting from the wrist. I think it was $98

  16. She does look good in the blouse but oh my, that jean jacket is just a *bit* too tight in the sleeves. Looks like she is trying to squeeze into crewcuts herself.
