J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Just went on over to the factory website and noticed they're posting reviews now! What a huge help that will be.

    1. After clicking around a bit it seems you can't review everything. I noticed the reviews when I checked out the floral sateen dress. Maybe in the process of adding reviews?

  2. Madewell's "Perfect Summer Jeans" were disappointing. The rise is high and they felt and looked like 90's mom jeans on me.

    1. Hi cate - the 90's jeans everywhere are kind of scaring me. I guess it's that thing about if you wore it the first time around....

Speaking of Madewell, they have some new arrivals up today. Some cute things, but some more scary jeans. Those back views are just... eeeek!

    2. silver_lining, sometimes the high rise works on jeans (well not on me, but on others!). Like the flea market flares, the high rise looks right on those. But the proportions are all off on these perfect summer jeans. High rise + loose at the top + tapered leg = no bueno. Add in the light wash and they are straight from the 1990s. However, I like the look of Madewell's new kick-out crop jeans. J. Crew's Vintage Crop jeans look like they'd be similar.

    3. I'm interested in trying some crop jeans this summer....I had a pair of hipslung cropped jeans from JC years ago and loved them. Can't decide between the vintage crop and the lookout crop.

Madewell's crops are cute too but I'm looking for a little darker wash. Their washes on the kick-out crops are "Thom" and "Yorke"... somebody over there must be a big Radiohead fan!

    4. The lookout crops weren't good on me, but I may have tried on a size too small. I think it depends if you like a high rise or a mid rise (the vintage crops are mid and the lookouts are high). Radiohead reference is lost on me, I was never into it :)

    5. I like the Lookouts and the Lookout crops (Tall in larger sizes in white are back ordered/sold out :(). I wear two sizes larger than my pant size in these, FYI.

    6. Wendy, I did try on the larger of my two denim sizes in the Lookouts, but didn't try two sizes up. Maybe that's where I went wrong, should have tried up another size. I think maybe they also aren't a good cut for my body type, though.

    7. Cate I like them in the mirror, but saw a picture of me in them the other day, and I had the ice cream cone shape going on :/ Skinny pants/jeans can be so tricky...

  3. Not a review but clearance was extra 50% off in store. Didn't have time to look but will definitely check back.

  4. anyone try the SEAMED SHELL IN ZIGZAG EYELET (item c7212) or the SEAMED SHELL IN CROSSHATCH LINEN (item c5939)?

i'm wondering if i should go with my normal size 2 or go down to a 0 because it's sleeveless. CS gave me a chest measurement of 35 for the 0 and 36 for the 2. i don't mind it being a little floaty... i just don't want gaping at the arm pits

    1. I took my normal J. Crew tank size in both. No issue with armpit gaping.

    Ikat wrap dress,TTS

Linen tanks, like always wih the linen, size down

Pull on nautical stripe skirt, runs big and i sized down

Embroidered mosaic pull on shorts, run big and i had to size down.they are very cute!

    2. Thanks, Ina!! I'm debating between the Sun-faded tropical sheath and the Ikat shift. Any additional thoughts?
How was the length on the Ikat shift and the shorts?
Did you try the dress in regular or petite?

      Delete
    3. @maryeb
The lenght of the ikat shift was a little over the knee in the front(its a little bit longer in the back). I took a 0 in the dress,as it is not fitted.
The lenght of the shorts are like 4" shorts on me. I had to size down to xxs in them to fit me.
In the tropical shift i took a 2( as in all fitted dresses). The length on this was above knee in a perfect way(maybe a couple inches).
None of the dresses i tried where petite.
I liked both dresses, but the tropical shift is a little more dressy. The ikat one is a casual dress. In my store a lot of the SA' s got the tropical shift.

    5. My Ontisuka Tigers arrived today and they are wonderful. I am very very impressed by both the product but also with how quickly they were shipped and arrived.

I know sometimes we get caught up in being disappointed with an item but I must say that the care and attention the company has given me along with a very sold product keeps me coming back. A co-worker joked that there must be crack in the clothing as we are all addicted.

    6. What color did you get, jcrew guy in Canada? Did you get the eighty fives or the fabre lows? I think both look great.

      Delete
    7. I got the eight fives in the darker charcoal colour, J.Crew calls it shadow grey. And they are even cooler in person.

  6. This is a new one to me. I got an email from J. Crew encouraging me to use my J. Crew Credit Card and telling me how much available credit I have on it to use (which is a lot, because I haven't been buying as much). They must be analyzing cardholder spending trends. Giving double rewards points is likely part of that.

    1. I like BR's card much better.

    2. I'm about to cancel my BR Luxe VISA card. They've done some annoying things over the years. I do like the rewards earned, but I've never successfully ordered from the web site without having to call customer service to finish the order or place it for me. It's very glitchy. Best to use the rewards in the store in person. But I'm going to cancel it, I need to get rid of a card and this is the one. I don't buy much from their brands anyway. Then again, I've nearly canceled the J. Crew card too. I should just cut them all loose! :)

  7. Got the first of my packages this week from last week's 40% off/ free ship deal. So far so good.

    1. Super 120's shell (navy) - fabulous! Fit is perfect for me (D cup) and I took my regular size. As other reviewers noted, it runs a little big, but then again I am too at the moment. Very, very flattering and versatile. Cut is wider at the bottom, almost swingy. I have the 120's pencil, and together they look like a dress (ready for major accessories and shoes). I love the 120's fabric - year-round and comfortable. This top has an exposed back zip, but I don't mind that too much.

    2. Stacked sequin sleeveless top (navy) - fine, will keep. I'm not in love with it, but it serves a purpose. The sequins are sewn on well. Agreed with reviewers that it looks a little reminiscent of candy buttons, but not too much. Runs a little big but I took my regular size. We'll see if the sequins fall off.

    3. Tippi in jade. I love these sweaters, and at 29.99 I'd keep buying them.

  8. Picked up 5 (!) Tillys during the 40%-off-no-final-sale promo from last week, and they're just perfect. I took my normal size, XXS, and they aren't too short. Just the perfect length for me (I'm 5-2). Colors were marvelous - ruby red, olive green, soothing medium blue, navy, and a pink. $24 each. Not scratchy. Tippis were too long for me and never looked neat. These do.

Also tried the embroidered linen top in mint. Size 000. It was pretty, with nice details on the sleeves. The body was flowing (as it's supposed to be) but just a tad too long for my personal taste, and it was toot tight in the shoulders for me. Because it was so loose in the body, the embroidered part draped awkwardly. Plus, there was a thread coming loose at the seam. Too high maintenance and not special enough for me at $41.99.

  9. 50% off clearance instore right now. Popped in yesterday for the first time in over a month, to find that a lot of shoes had just been added to the clearance wall - got the Elsie pumps in the faded adire indigo, and two different pairs of the Marlow mules which turned out to be way more comfortable than I had anticipated. Very good prices, all 3 together cost me less than $200. Worked my way through the rest of the sale racks which were reasonably full, trying on a lot as it has been so long - but didn't like any of it really and didn't get a thing. The manager had saved me the limited-edition tote with the Greg Lamarche design on it from the store's anniversary event earlier in the month, so that was a nice surprise at the cash - and a sure sign that I shop at that store wayyyy too often ;)

  10. I tried a few more things:
Floral lace dress: TTS to a little small

Painter tee, short sleeve:TTS to slighly small

Linen swing sweater,TTS, i love this one!

    Short-sleeve popover:TTS

Textured honey comb top:runs large, size down

    Collarless popover in bengal stripe:TTS

Metallic v-neck cardi: TTS for a slouchy fit. It is sheer, but i love it! Its very soft.

  11. Notched Shell in ZigZag Ikat ((#C6355). This is a bit boxy and almost cropped. I liked the material but not the cut. Some will like it, but I wished it were longer.

Short-Sleeve Popover (I think I tried the one in stripe). I felt like this was wearing me rather than me wearing it. It kind of overwhelmed me. The cut of the neckline was nice. Maybe the fabric would relax a bit and drape better after a wear or two.

Ikat Wrap Dress (C4244). The smaller of my two dress sizes is the one that fit. Length was good on me, just above knee (I'm 5'4"). There is a very delicate stitch holding the wrapped neckline together. I think it would be hard to wear without it. If you buy the dress, consider reinforcing the stitch or replacing it with a hook and eye. I think it's nice the stitch is there, though, it made the dress wearable for me.

Pull-on Skirt in Nautical Stripe (C5580) runs big. Same with Textured honeycomb top and Midnight Floral Cocoon Top.

Tretorn Tournament Net Sneakers (C2124). TTS, mesh looks like it could be uncomfortable but they were very comfortable on.

Love the ZigZag Ikat Shorts (C6431). TTS, all cotton, fit like chino shorts but they feel softer than the chino shorts.

I hope a JCA buys the Collection linen chai mail tank top! I didn't see it in person, but it looks really cool online (it should be for $298! :) ).

    1. thanks for reviewing the ikat shorts. that surprises me that they are softer than chino shorts bc from the look of the picture they look quite stiff and that's why i haven't tried them.

  12. Vintage Cropped Jean in Parisi Wash - I wanted a lightweight denim for Spring & Summer and I think these will do nicely. I got my usual size 26. They are fitted in the hip and thigh and have a nice amount of stretch, so they don't feel tight. Loose in the waist, so I need to wear a belt. I wore them all day yesterday and am wearing them again today. No problem with bagging/sagging so far.
I personally would not want to size down, as some of the reviews on JC's site suggest.
I am 5'3", they hit just a bit above my ankle bone.
I've been debating about getting a pair of white jeans for years, but am really not a fan. I think this light wash is a a great alternative!

  13. Tried on the double stripe pencil skirt in mauve ivory. It's a delicious skirt - I wanted the dress but petite is sold out and the giant armholes on the regular sizing just won't work on me. The skirt was too long on me (5-2) and too big in the hips. I thought about shortening it, but shortening it would ruin the lovely stripes at the hem. So sad! It's really beautiful and summery and I love that it's (supposed to) hit at the knee.

    Oh well.

  14. After a long break, I ordered lots of stuff to try.

This is what I am keeping:

Chambray Pocket Shirt: I sized down one to XXS. I usually can’t size down in button-down shirts because my shoulders are broad, but this one fits well in the shoulders and arms with a little extra room in the body. There is just too much shirt to tuck into a skirt without looking bulky, so I will have to wear it untucked. I also tried PXS, but the sleeves were too short for me (5’5” tall with longer than average arms).

Drapey Chambray Popover: I sized down one to 00. The arm holes in the 0 were too big, and the body was pretty wide. The 00 is still pretty loose but in a more flattering way. I also tried 0P and it fit well too. I think it was about an inch shorter. I was hoping to have the option of tucking this one into a skirt, but the panels on the sides stick out when the shirt is tucked.

Denim Short in Bradbury Wash: These are comfy and just the right length for me uncuffed. My usual size 25 is a little loose, so I ordered the size 24 to compare. Anybody know if these stretch out during the day? I liked these better than the Broken-in Denim Shorts in Crowley Wash.

Seersucker Pencil Skirt (navy): TTS. My usual pencil skirt size 00 fit perfectly in the waist with a little extra room in the hips. I was worried that it would be too long, so I ordered the P0 also, but the petite one hit just above the knee instead of just below. The skirt appears to be well-made with a lining. I love it.

Things I liked but had to return because I couldn’t get the fit right:

Faded Adire Short: My usual shorts size (0) fit, but sat a little too high on the waist and gave me a bubble butt. The size 2 felt more comfortable but was too puffy in the hips. I LOVE the material, pattern, and length and was very sad to send these back.

Double-Stripe Pencil Skirt: I tried this skirt in black and white. It’s very well-made and pretty, but runs big. I’m 5’5” and the length would be fine on me if it sat high on my waist. Unfortunately it was way too big in the waist and hips in my usual 00 so I had to return. Size down and I think most people will love this one. I liked it enough to consider having it altered, but finally decided that I don’t really need it.

High-waisted denim mini skirt: My usual jean size (25) fit very well in the waist but was too big in the hips (opposite of my usual problem). I also tried 24, but it was too tight in the waist.

  15. Hayes suede sandals- the first time I wore them they seemed fine but the second time has given me horrible blisters. I didn't even walk that far and they hurt so much at the top where they rub the ankle I thought I'd have to take them off to walk back to my car. I am going to try moleskin or gel pads since I really like them otherwise.

Vintage palm tree tee- I took my normal tee size instead of sizing down like I usually do with linen because I thought it looked better a little slouchy. It's a cute tee and at the sale price in store I was very happy. Sizing down would have fit well still but looked more sheer as it was a little closer to the body. I still might have to wear a cami, I have to try it again as I hate if I can see my bra at all.

    1. Jan- same thing with me! I ordered both the tan and the black. I wore the black once and got blisters on the heels. So I returned the tan immediately. Even though they are pretty, no need for painful shoes. I also applied a heel guard and will wear band-aids with the black ones. Hopefully that will work. :)

      Delete
    2. Alexis, good idea about the band-aids I think I'll try that with heel guards too to be safe. I have the tan ones. these are the worst blisters I've had. Sadly I snagged the misty green ones after stalking popbacks but I must force myself to return them now even though I love the color.

    3. jan & alexis - Click here for a link to blister block sticks. I've only used the Band-Aid brand which I haven't been able to find in-store for eons. I've ordered online since they stopped selling it in-stores or at least in stores near me. Perhaps if you have a little slip with the strap you won't have to use the Band-Aids.

    4. Gigi, thank you that looks great! You're always so helpful. Ps. Love the midnight floral shift on you, it is now on my radar. :)
