J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I received the black leather Harper mules and I'm in love. The leather is excellent quality and soft. I like the point toe for helping elongate my legs even though it's a flat shoe. Delman and Narcisco Rodriguez, to name just a couple, have a similar mule this season but their prices are between $400 and $600. I got my Harper mules for $62! I highly recommend. They're very fashion forward, and also appeal to the minimalist in me. I'm going to wear them a lot. Sizing was consistent for J. Crew. I took 7 1/2, my normal J. Crew size.

    1. The yellow version of this sold out very quickly - I missed out! One of the bright spots this season in the shoe category IMO.

    2. Those yellow ones did sell out fast! I got the white with the tassels, and only because they were a pop-back. I don't understand why J Crew didn't have more of these Harper mules because even I could see they would be popular, and I'm not a fashion expert.

    3. Desert Flower - the Marlows are navy, unless black was avail and I missed it.

For those interested, I reviewed the Marlow in this post and the hurache Marlows in this post, boh on 1060 Pairs. I really liked the Marlow, too. The regular, not the huarache. They're really comfortable, but something about my in-step didn't mesh with the structure of the shoe. Too bad because I agree w/Desert Flower that they nailed this one. Other retailers did it, but with a thinner heel that's not as easy to walk on.

    4. Gigi, we've got our mules crossed :) I was talking about the flat Harper mules, you're talking about the heeled Marlow mules. But you're right, both are awesome.

    5. Desert Flower - lol I saw Marlow, not Harlow. I'm in denial about needing my eyes checked. Do they stay on your feet well when walking? Is it similar to minding them like flip flops?

    6. Gigi, I found them comfortable to wear and walk in. The leather sort of holds your foot. I didn't find my foot moved around inside the mule and I didn't feel like they were going to come off or I would walk out of them. The leather is soft and I thought they were very comfortable. Right out of the box I wore them to get groceries and run some other errands with no break in needed. And I got tons of compliments in the grocery store!

    7. I like those. How'd you get them at such a great price??!!

    8. Oh, they're $52 now!! But they only have tan and navy. I'd much rather black. Wonder if the sore still has them.

    9. Jruby, are you talking about the Harper flat mules, or the Marlow mules with heels? I purchased the Harper when they were on sale and an additional percent off could be used. They were a pop back though, they've been sold out for a while. The odd size here and there is popping up and I was lucky enough to catch my size.

    10. I meant the Marlow mules w/heels. maybe they only come in navy and tan. Still $%2 is a great price for them.

  2. Can anyone review the Mackenzie crackled foil sandals (#C7271) ? I've been watching for a pop-back and placed an order for them this morning, but I should have checked here for sizing information first. I ordered my regular shoe size, but maybe I should have gone down a bit? Thanks for any info! Hopefully they will ship, but we know how that goes.

    1. Hi Cate! I ordered them and ended up returning them. They are beautiful and fit tts but just didn't look right on my foot. Also, the heel strap didn't lay in the most comfortable spot on my heel. Ema (crazyaboutjcrew on IG) reviewed them and loved them. In fact, she was the reason I bought them! Too bad they didn't work out...

    2. Thanks Lauren! I noticed them too because of Ema's Instagram review. The online reviews are confusing - they're too long for some and too tight in the straps too but the back strap is too loose? I guess I am going to have to wait and see if they fit my foot. My feet are kind of wide so this could be a problem. What about them didn't look right on your foot?

    3. Hi Cate! Like you said, I think you will just have to try them for yourself and see what you think. My feet are on the wider side in the forefoot and narrow in the heel, and I think the straps just didn't lay right. Also, the heel strap didn't come up to that "groove" on your heel where it normally does. It stayed down lower and if I pulled it up it just slipped back down. I hope this helps...

    4. cate - Ema has pics & comments about the Mackenzie sandals here and here.

    5. Thanks Lauren! I was thinking maybe I could put some moleskin on the back strap to make it slightly smaller, maybe that would make it stay up? Now I"m impatiently waiting to see if they ship :)

Gigi, thank you! I'm off to look again. It was her instagram that put these on my radar in the first place, but I placed the order without going back to read her reviews (you know how popbacks go!). Thanks Ema, too!

  3. Crossover Wrap Skirt: I received this in the Wisteria color in a tall size 10. I'm so glad they are making a tall version of this skirt!!! I'm 5'8" but mostly leg and this skirt hits me right at the knee, making it work-appropriate. The slit does open up a bit when you sit or if you take a long walking stride as I do, but the extra length of the tall really helps. The skirt itself is a beautiful pale lavender color that complements the Scattered Sequin Shell in faded indigo quite nicely -- I'm having the shirt tailored to make it shorter, closer to the waist so the overall silhoutte works better.

Factory Crossed-Back Jacquard Tank Top: I received this in the lemon (a beautiful golden yellow, not neon at all) and the night shadow. This tank has a tactile texture to it and the length is great on my 5'8" frame...perfect with shorts or a midi skirt. The back petals sit crossed over each other when you're still so nothing shows, but as soon as you move the petals open up all the way to the bra. On a hot day I'd barely care, I'd wear one of those strappy-back bras that are meant to be shown off. For work however I'm layering a thin cami underneath. Runs a little large as I've found all Factory stuff does, a 4 was better than my usual 6.

  4. J. Crew Collection scallop-sleeve peasant top (#C7335). This appears to be sold out right now. I'm not sure what the color is called, Vintage something (cut off on my invoice), but it is an off-white, almost a cream color, which is usually not my favorite on me but the top is so pretty. It is 100% linen, so doesn't have much give, but it fits TTS. The slit in front is not too low (one more inch would have made it too low for me, though). The embroidery is well done and is on the front and sleeves only. The sleeve embroidery makes them stand out a bit to the sides, but I think it doesn't look weird when you look at the top overall. I'm wavering on keeping it because of the cost, but I think I'm going to. It's a good fit on me and is one of those tops that you can throw on with pants or a skirt easily without having to think too much, can be dressed up or dressed down. It is going to wrinkle badly, though. I scrunched up the hem and it was instant wrinkles, which is what I'm finding with some of the linen pants and skirts at J. Crew this season, but that's probably just par for linen.

    1. Meant to add that it has curved side vents that lay nicely. The top is airy through the torso without being oversized (it is fitted at the shoulders).

    2. In the past I have found J Crew's linen to look good at first...and then two or three wears later....looks like it should be thrown away.sorry....I love line I think Jcrews is just too thin...

    3. I'm sure you are right, it's going to be high-maintenance and this style won't look good rumpled. That is part of my hesitation in keeping it. I don't mind the perfect shirts getting rumpled, but pants, skirts, and possibly a top like this I'd prefer to look more pressed. If it were a third the price, it would be an easy decision, but at this price, I'm not sure if I should keep it.

    4. Cate I so agree that linen tops and perfect shirts in particular can be perfectly acceptable when they are a bit rumpled - part of the essence of linen. It's the bottoms that make me feel frumpy when lined and creased all over from sitting ... Cargo Pencil Skirt, I'm talking to you!

  5. Denim skirt review time:

    J. Crew Pencil Skirt in Stretch Denim with Raw Edge (#C3299) in white. I tried this in my Toothpick jean size and didn't like it on me. I guess the pencil silhouette isn't what I wanted. The skirt was high-waisted, too, which is not my favorite. I felt a bit trapped by it, even if it was probably the right size. Returned this.

Madewell Raw-Edged Jean Skirt (B8647) in gage wash. This was perfect, other than the distressed hole in the behind. I'm going to get a patch from the fabric store and apply it on the inside to avoid a possible wardrobe malfunction. It's wearable as-is, though, but for how long, I don't know. I'll get the patch before I wash it to make sure the hole doesn't get bigger in the wash. But the skirt feels great on, the bit of stretch makes it so comfortable. The length is great on me, above the knee but not a mini (I'm 5'4" for reference). It seems slightly A-line. It was a favorite right out of the bag. This one fit best in one size down from my Toothpick jean size. I'd call this a mid-rise.

Still looking for a white denim skirt, I tried the Madewell White Denim Patch-Pocket Skirt (#C5219). This one was a winner right out of the bag too. It is a mid-rise, hits above my knees. Love the patch pockets in the front. This fit me best in my Toothpick jean size. It feels like it has less stretch than the blue raw-edged skirt, but both skirts are 98% cotton, 2% elastane.

    1. I'm revising the Madewell Raw-Edged jean skirt in gage wash to say it's a high rise, not a mid rise. I should probably check the Madewell white denim skirt again too, maybe it is more high rise than mid rise.

    2. cate, did you see that there's a white denim skirt in the factory rollout today? it's at the top of the new arrivals via the early rollout link.

  6. Madewell Linen Interlude Sweater in Heather Dove (#C2562). This is basically a huge square with armholes. And it's too see-through. I can't return this fast enough. Madewell did well with their short-sleeved linen sweaters last year so I had hopes for this one, but it was disappointing.

My faves are a lace shift, the seersucker striped garden pant,an iridesent clutch,an clear beach tote,a woven striped clutch.
There is also a new color in the gingham (orchid).

  9. Review of VINTAGE COTTON TEE IN METALLIC Item B7282. I ordered an XS my usual size in vintage tees and I found it ran (of course) a little small. It is very see-thru, but the metallic is silver and very subtle which I liked. I thought it was long, which is a break from short and boxy. Overall, I am finding J Crew sizing all over the map for me, which is frustrating when you are ordering online and waiting weeks for item to arrive. Not sure if I will return and reorder in Small or not. Kinda blah on J Crew right now sorry.

  12. Does anyone have comments on how NO. 2 PENCIL SKIRT IN COTTON TWILL fit. Is it TTS, larger, smaller, I take 2p in 1035 trouser. Should I go with 0 or 2 reg. thanks

  13. Love the marlow huarache mules. They fit TTS to slightly small, I would say, although I saw Gigi and AudreyBella sized up by half a size. I normally wear an 8, ordered an 8.5, but I am sure an 8 would have worked as well as I have about 1/2 an inch at the heel. Not sure why these are not selling as well as the non-huarche mules -- I think they are gorgeous and have both colors, a great buy right now at $105 less 40%!
