J.Crew Summer Sale {nice update!}

"Thanks!" to many of you, who let us know the following news from this morning.

J.Crew has a nice update to their Summer Sale (click here to shop online) section online this morning. Lots of merchandise for everyone (1210+ for Women and 345+ for Men). Yey!

It is too bad the additional percent off sale is no longer available online. I am sure more merchandise would be selling out faster with that extra enticement. And while I am at it...

Yesterday was suppose to be the last day for an additional 30% off Sale merchandise in brick & mortar (B&M) stores. Is that still the case? I just know that the sale sections in my local stores are bursting, so it seems like in their best interest to keep that {great} sale going.

Did you check out the Summer Sale section today? Were you able to snag any amazing deals? If so, please share! :)

  1. I am really starting to get frustrated with the way they price their cashmere during the summer! Yesterday i snagged a cashmere tippi in black for $112.00 which is the lowest I've seen that color go (not to mention it was a pop back b/c the black has been sold out for atleast two months). I saw that the snow was on sale for $99.00, so I figured I'd wait til there was another promotion and get it then! I check this morning, and the snow was back up to $138.00 and the navy (which was priced w/ the black at 112, yesterday) is now back up to 168.00!! I honestly don't get what their reasoning is for pricing the way they do! If they want to move the cashmere, which everyone knows they have a huge stock of, keep it at prices people are willing to pay!

I have the same frustration with the Silk Key Hole top. Yesterday they were $58.00, today they're back up to the regular price of $98.00. What's the deal?!

If they would just stay consistent, I would have purchased another cashmere tippi (yes, I know, it's summer lol) and the silk key hole top! But now I am resolute in not buying those things til they come back down to the prices I saw yesterday (Plus, hopefully another 25-30% off). I will not give in!!

Also, on another note, I have noticed my spending at Jcrew in the last month has gone up a TON since they did $5.00 shipping. Maybe it's just a mental thing, but I've been so much more willing to pull the trigger now that the shipping cost is at the level of most other comparable stores. I still wish they offered free shipping on $50/$60+ like other stores typically do, but I can live with $5.00 shipping. I always cringed at $8.95 shipping. I'm wondering if they've seen an increase in sales since they put the $5.00 shipping promotion out there? Any thoughts!

Sorry for the long post. :)

    1. Interesting. I refuse to pay for shipping, so I didn't even notice the switch to $5 flat rate. I always buy something to put me over the free shipping minimum and return it. This is an honest question, so I hope it doesn't sound snarky in tone: why do you pay for shipping? My reasoning: I'm not taking advantage of the free shipping minimum, because I am not breaking any rules. I don't wear any of the merchandise I return, and if JC really had a problem with people doing this, they wouldn't have a high free shipping minimum at all (some retailers don't0.

    2. For me, returning things are a hassle. My closest store is about a 20-30 minute drive and I would easily spend the $5 in gas and time to go there and take something back. I could mail it back but it takes a while to get the credit back to your account.

People have differing thoughts but I also don't feel right buying things and returning things I don't want in the first place just to meet a shipping minimum. There's nothing wrong with it but it just doesn't sit well with me and now that the shipping cost is $5 I don't see a big problem with paying it although I always try to maximize my orders and meet the minimums.

I hope JC lowers their minimum, $175 is awfully high.

    3. katertott, I agree with you on all your points. My store is a bit over an hour away! So 2+ hours drive time total and I haven't even shopped yet. I just don't have time in my life for that kind of long trip more than a couple of times a year! I also don't do the buy/return thing to meet the minimum. Don't want/need the hassle.

    4. I think the Silk Keyhole top was part of the "Vacation Picks" that were 40% off this weekend. Now that the promo has ended the price has gone back to the original $98.

I totally agree about the shipping. I live an hour and a half away from a store so I generally buy online if I want something and half the time I have to send it back for some reason or another. Between the $8.95 shipping to me and the shipping cost to return something, I feel like I spend as much money on UPS as I do J.Crew!

    5. @klklaich oooo that explains it! Lol. I didn't think that was a vacation-esque piece, more like a work piece, but now I get it!

As far as paying for shipping: a lot of the time I only order one or two things at a time b/c I'm waiting for pop backs in my size, or sometimes ( because we all know how jcrew can be) one day there's nothing I like and the next day there's a ton of stuff I like! Thus, I could buy a sweater today but tomorrow a dress will appear that I want and I'll buy that too! Unfortunately, a lot of the time, the things I want or like are never on the sale site all at once. :(. Thus I incur the shipping fee each time, which stinks.

Also, it's not currently easy for me to return stuff, as I'm in Paris, France right now and everything is getting shipped home to Virginia lol. So I only buy what I know will fit right, as to not deal w/ the hassle of trying to figure out a way to return it.

    6. What frustrates me about the shipping (and the few rewards the J.Crew card offers) is that it doesn't account for the customers who are buying more than the average. I remember about six or seven years ago when I shopped a lot at bebe they had a VIP Card that you would be eligible for if you spent a certain amount each month. I'd get free shipping on all my orders and on occasion special promotional gifts (Actually does anyone remember that J.Crew used to send out calendars to their loyal customers at the end of the year? I received two, probably around 2008-2011?). In fact, for every 100 points you accrued at bebe (1 dollar a point, with double points days occasionally), you would get 10 dollars off. I know the J.Crew card offers rewards, but from my understanding that's up to $500 a quarter. For me, that's not worth it, because with a Visa or American Express, especially the Bloomingdale's card, I can earn many more rewards and points beyond that $500 cap which I definitely exceed. I don't know that a similar VIP card for J.Crew would solve some of the sale pricing issues that are really pissing me off lately, but maybe the price adjustment window could be two weeks instead of one for VIPs, etc.

This set of annoyances doesn't really affect my view of J.Crew as a company or change how likely I am to buy the merchandise, but it does affect how I feel as a "valued" customer. Aside from a few sales associates knowing me well, holding items for me, and on occasion stacking my student discount on top of other discounts, I just feel a little under appreciated considering how much money I spend on J.Crew. It's the little things, you know? It's exactly the fact that I can order $300 worth of merch one day, and the popback I'm waiting for, like you, erlee, will be available the next day, and I'll have to pay for shipping on that.

At the very least, I am glad I am not alone in these feelings!

  2. I did check out the sale section this morning and noticed a lot of new markdowns, as well as several new promo items, too. I'm working on the list of both and will have it posted on my blog in a little bit.

  3. I hate to say this because I love J. Crew, but I am really bored with it right now. I went through all of the Womens sale section this morning but there is nothing I was interested in.

  4. Bought two pairs of shorts at 40% off a couple days ago and noticed this morning that they are listed in the "up to 50% off" sale section, but they are "on sale" for MORE than I paid for them. Just too many price games to keep up with. It makes me tired and I just stop looking.

    1. Stray Cat, I agree. I did very well with the markdowns-30% over the weekend, but I don't need anything else for summer and am kind of exhausted over the pricing games.

All these promos and markdowns are probably moving the leftover merch sitting around, but J. Crew has made even promo-insensitive customers feel foolish about paying FP for anything ever again. The sameness of alot of the offerings now means that VERY FEW items won't make it to a markdown.

I'm going to sit it out for a while and wait for fall.

    2. I completely agree. I am tired of trying to figure out the best time to buy stuff. Shopping shouldn't be hard. I am also taking a break until the fall clothes roll out.

    3. I'm taking a break too! This year's summer rollout is a blah. Waiting for the fall clothes and hoping there might be something I really, really want.

    4. totally agree with everything said here! Shopping shouldn't be this hard! I've bought very little this year....only a couple of things from the Crew and boy, I can tell you my life is alot less hectic than last year when I swear I was reordering and returning every week. It's nuts and this year I just said "no!" to all the sales and markdowns. I'm wearing what I own and I'm happy about it.

    5. Yeah, I'm really over these huge price discrepancies online and in stores. I called Friday about ordering the navy eyelet pencil skirt and wanting the $49.99 plus 30% discount as it is in the stores (it's $98 on the website). The person I spoke with on the phone said that I had to physically go to a store and call them and have them order it for me. Surely the store price list is not a giant secret to their own employees. I am actually somewhat okay if they want to price something slightly higher online (like maybe $10 difference) since that is probably the bulk of their business, fine, but that is a huge price difference.

I don't understand why they make it difficult to honor the prices they set. Long story short, I decided not to buy it because I didn't want to drive the half hour to my store and got frustrated so they lost the sale. I called all the stores in my state and no one had it so going online was my only alternative since they won't do WWIFYs on sale.

    6. I agree Katertott the price discrepancies are ridiculous. I live over an hour and a half from the nearest store. It is just not possible for me to drive over 3 hours to catch a sale. Like you I end up taking my business elsewhere. Why would I pay $99 online for a sweater or something that other people find in store for $39?! I don't see why Jcrew does not have consistent pricing.

  5. I just finished the list of new markdowns and promo-priced items. I think that stores may still be running the extra 30% off, so if an item is on sale or promo online, but not in the store, ask the sales associate if they will match the online price, and apply the extra % off. You can also ask to place a Blue Martini (formerly Red Phone) order for one of the online promo-priced or sale items and have the extra % off taking place in the store applied to it, as well. The list of the new items is here on my blog. Have a great day everyone! :)

  6. OT: Just a reminder for those considering shopping the extra 20% off sale at Madewell, that today is the last day of it. There are a lot of promo-priced items eligible for the 20% off as well. I have that list posted here for those interested.

  7. Current promo at B&Ms are 25% off everything in store and 30% if you have a JCrew card. Not sure how long it lasts and never saw an email about it.

    3. My VPS said the 25-30% off promo was until monday, june 24 and added that the offer is valid on: Full-price merchandise, Markdowns, Current price-point promos (i'm assuming jewelry is included)

  8. Two thoughts:

First, the sale section online seems big - but 25% of it is swim. That's a lot of suits to unload.

Second, the Crewcuts prices have yet to come down much. They're still asking $30+ for shorts, which is a lot. Our Crewcuts spending has plummeted (even though they have frees shipping all the time!)

    I'll admit to being baffled.

  11. I wish JC would give us more information about the promos. It makes it difficult for those of us who have to travel a distance to get to a B&M. Last week I had to decide if I was going to leave early enough to make it a B&M near a work meeting today or if I would just go after my meeting ends tomorrow. I decided on tomorrow since the promo was suppose to end yesterday, now I wish I had gone today... Oh well, maybe it will extend again.

    1. I was just in my local B&M, no one mentioned the 25%-30% promo. I saw some of the new arrivals nothing impressed me. Like others I am waiting for Fall arrivals unless the Tilda rhinestone shirt goes on sale. If anyone is still looking for the Jewel Convertible sweater, Park Meadows, CO store had 1 XS for $39.99.

  16. Did anyone ever go to the sample sale in NYC? I'm wondering if I should go to the sample sale or hit up this online summer sale. Which one has better deals???

    1. It really depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for current season items I would say that sooner or later the stores have better prices (if not now in a few weeks). If you are looking for the ones that got away from past seasons go to the sample sale as there is always a chance that they will turn up there. My advice is to go knowing the online prices of things that you might be interested in as the deals are very hit or miss (typically bags are good deals but shoes it depends).

    2. If you've never been to their sample sale it's worth going. I've found some gems last time I went. Google Mizhattan. She/they wrote a review today on the sale.

  17. A little off topic: my VPS emailed today to let me know that my local store is getting new arrivals tomorrow and that all in store purchases are currently 30% off. This is for the Robson St Vancouver store.

Even more off topic: my groopdealz order for the rosette statement necklace arrived today. It took a long time but I assume that was due to Canadian customs. The order shipped on may 24 and arrived June 17. Still, I am pretty happy with the necklace given the price.
