J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I bought the café capris in the rope print, felt I had to go up a size. I took a size 2 in the orange dot brocade café capris, and maybe could have even done a 0. I also picked up the navy brocade jkt (size s ), I had the black/cream one already ( size M). I will probably wear the size s jkt un-zipped, if I zip it up I look like the Michelin man! anyone else have problems with sizing?
Also need to know if anyone has bought the Mari sandals, and can let me know how they fit, I will have to order them online, bit of a pain since I live in Canada.

    1. I reviewed the Mari sandals in shocking pink in this post. I wear 7.5 and took my usual J Crew size of 8. So if you size up half a size in J Crew shoes like I do, that may likely be the case for the Mari.

    2. Were the rope print café capris on sale in the b&m? TIA

    3. I reviewed the Mari sandals in the 'portabella mushroom' colour in this post.

I found they fit TTS on my size 8M feet.

  2. I just placed an order online using CARDTREAT and it went through, even though it was supposed to expire on 6/24! Otherwise, they have lowered the sale to 25% off using the code LOVEJCREW.

    2. They sent an email this morning about CARDTREAT that says "Offer valid on purchases made in J.Crew stores and at jcrew.com from June 25, 2013, 12:01am ET through June 26, 2013, 11:59pm ET using a J.Crew Credit Card. "

  5. I made my first actual purchase in a long time this weekend. found one of the liberty shirts in my size for $33! Can't pass that up. I also put together a few reviews yesterday. I was pretty tired after my first day of ICU work! Reviews for:

-Merino Tippi sweater in school-of-fish print– I really like this print! The weave is different than the regular merino tippi sweaters. Its much looser. But the actual top is similar in size if not slightly smaller. here are those pics

-Rugby-stripe tank dress– This dress looks much cuter on than on the rack. Its simple, but in a good way. Its a thicker material that you don’t have to worry about being see-thru. Cute and comfy for a summer dress! here are those pics of the dress

-Herringbone stripe tunic– this is an adorable beach coverup. Its a wonderful length and is super comfy. the only issue I had with it was that it was a little tight in the arms in the xxs. here are those fit pics

Short-sleeve popover in oxford dot– This is a super cute short sleeve shirt. The color is perfect for any season, really. And the dots are very nice and subtle. Definitely consider on sale. here are those fit pics

-Cotton Faille Pull-on Shorts– I think that they’re a flattering pair. I like that they’re a much thicker material so you don’t have to worry about the white being see-thru. And I like that they have an elastic waist because I’m lazy, especially in the summer. I’d easily recommend these. here are those shorts on me

-3″ Chino Short– Their chino shorts are never flattering on me. They don’t flatter my thighs and they kind of squish my bum. The length isn’t flattering on someone my height either. I always picture these on taller women or a really skinny petite. here are those unflattering shorts on me

  6. First up, thanks Amber for another set of helpful reviews! I tried the crinkle city mini based on your comments and LOVE it. Paper-bag waists usually don't work on me, but the crinkle fabric is just heavy enough to hang without too much poofy-ness. Light enough for hot summer weather, too, and a relative steal at $28 after discounts.

My luck wasn't so good with the double-crepe skirt, still full price at $98 online. This was released earlier this summer, tho the fabric is a very thick poly that would pair better with tights and a cozy sweater. The waist is TTS and the length isn't scandalously short, but oh my is there a LOT of fabric to go 'round. Maybe this would work better on someone taller, but at 5'3" I just don't have enough height to balance out the volume.

    1. wow, i can't believe you got it for $28!! i'm going to have to look around as soon as i get a chance. they definitely weren't there when i checked this past weekend. will have to try a different store! thanks for sharing :)

  7. I posted a review of the Nolita white denim jacket on the weekend - in case anyone missed it, this is my blog link again HERE. Fit is slightly generous, I went with the smaller of my two top sizes, the XS. Cut is better than the white denim jacket from a couple years ago (which I tried and then returned) - this year's version is more tailored, and trim-looking overall. Great find from J. Crew this year!

  8. Not J. Crew, but I bought the Groopdealz versipn of the white beaded rose necklace. It won't lay flat and the bottom 1-3 flowers flip over. Groopdealz says it is final sale (which I didn't see when I bought it, and there was no invoice in the package). So I'm stuck with it, but I can't wear it. Just wanted to warn anyone thinking about purchasing from Groopdealz, look out for the "final sale" if you purchase. And you may get what you pay for. $14 is a great price, but it's wasted money because I can't wear the necklace. I think this is from a vendor selling under the Groopdealz site, and I don't know what other knockoffs they are making, but be careful ordering from there.

    1. I ordered a multistone bracelet from Groopdealz for 10.99 and i am wondering how that will look.
The stones might not be good quality for that price:)

      Delete
    2. This was my first (and last) time ordering from them. The necklace looked pretty good. I had bought the real deal from J. Crew and compared them. J. Crew's beaded rose necklace had slightly smaller flowers closest to the ends, which was a nice touch. Groopdealz flowers were all the same size. They flowers themselves looked a lot alike, but the backings were so different and I think contributed to the flowers twisting around. So anyway I think the multi-stone bracelet could look good, hopefully! I will not do final sale on purpose and I don't think it was very clear to the buyer that it was final sale, so I'm done with Groopdealz.

      Delete
    3. Ohhh, bummer! I ordered that necklace in coral and have been very pleased with it. My flowers don't flip, but I do clasp it a few links in so it lays a bit shorter and the circle of flowers is wider. Gigi mentioned the same flipping issue with her white necklace and someone suggested clasping it higher and it worked for Gigi. Have you tried that? Such a bother to have to fuss with it though!

      Delete
    4. Paula, thanks for the idea! I'll give it a try.

      Delete
    5. I just assume the knockoff jewelry is final sale. It's so cheap & not worth the hassle for me to spend $5 priority to return it. I treat it as a gamble, esp when I don't know the vendor. I believe Groopdealz is just the hub and the vendors vary.

I'm very happy with my beaded rose necklace from Dealz. The flipping was annoying, but it's pretty much resolved by clasping the necklace up higher as suggested. There's no way I would pay for the J Crew version, not even on sale simply because I know I wouldn't get the cost/wear down. I got 2 for $30, $40 max w/shipping thru Dealz.

      Delete
    6. Hi Cate. I bought the Groopdealz white beaded rose necklace, and it does work to clasp higher.

However, it still annoyed me, and I just received the JC original today and like it much, much better. The flower petals are still acrylic (described on JC website and you can see the molding edges), like the Groopdealz necklace, but more matte unlike the shiny plastic Groopdealz, and the chain links -- both between the flowers and at the ends -- are much more substantial. The fewer and larger links b/w the flowers make it actually impossible for the individual flowers to flip.

On its own, the Groopdealz necklace is really quite pretty. But in a side-by-side comparison, I am happy to say that the JC necklace definitely looks its price (i.e,, it's not a F21-er). I am keeping the JC version for myself and giving the Groopdealz one to my 7 year old, who turns 8 tomorrow and loves to match with me.

      Delete
    7. gigi, audreys, thanks. It's only $14 but I guess I was unhappy on principle. I'll try clasping it higher, will see how it goes. The J. Crew version is much nicer, even the chain, but like you said gigi, the cpw wouldn't be there for me either. But if I knew I'd wear it a lot, I'd have kept the J. Crew version - the price wasn't that bad with the 30% off and it is very substantial. Thank you!

    8. I own both the coral and white JC necklaces, which I love, but purchased 2 from GroopDealz because of the colors - mint and turquoise! While the JC version is more substantial, the Dealz necklaces are pretty good for the price. I had the issue with the bottom flower flipping, and solved that by removing one of the flowers! It now lays perfectly, and I can clasp it at a more comfortable setting. It was pretty easy, I used a pair of pliars to open the rings, remove a flower, and reattach to the chain. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase!

  12. During the crazy sale over the weekend I picked up the color collage statement necklace for $42 - I am IN LOVE. The colors on this necklace are vibrant compared to some of the painted stone necklaces I've seen that look more matte and I love that there are blue and black stones in it so you can pair it with black or navy. It is a statement piece without being too overwhelming. I styled it with the J.Crew lattice print capris and raindrop lace tee on my blog here.

Also, expecting a package today from the latest 30% promotion...I'm a little late to the party on these but I picked up a popback of the neon tweed skirt and the punk floral swoop top...I'm hoping I like at least one of them. I think I'm the only one who didn't love the punk floral on first sight so I'm wondering what I'll think IRL since my store sold out of these in a flash.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Speaking of late to the party.... as always I'm finally trying a trend just as it's on the way out, and I'm loving the Peplum dress in stretch wool (25309). The bodice is fitted, the skirt has plenty of room for my wide hips, and the cap sleeves make me less self-conscious about my arms. It's perfect for those work/social events where you want to look dressy but still businesslike.

  14. I recently purchased the J.Crew Factory Pleated Shift Dress and I love it! It runs true to size and the fabric is a really nice woven material. I posted three different ways to wear it here: http://www.sincerelysammie.com/2013/06/25/how-to-wear-yellow-dress/

  15. @ina - I ordered the multi stone bracelet from Groopdealz and it just arrived yesterday. For $10, I'm happy. The bracelet is a bit stiff and the clasp was a bit tough but comparing to the photos of the real one, the stones are spot on and seem to be decent quality. As long as it doesn't fall apart on me, for as often as I anticipate wearing it I'm ok with the $ I spent on it.

  17. Vintage Cotton Cap Sleeve Tee, neon azalea:
I got this shirt to wear with my porcelain paisley skirt. The color is definitely neon, but I like it. Fits TTS for a vintage cotton shirt. Got my usual XS. My only concern is that the tag says "color may transfer to lighter fabrics". Should I be worried about it?

    Linen Hawaiian Sunset Tank:
Super comfy. Racerback is flattering. Fits kind of loose, but not enough to size down. The colors make me feel like a tourist, so I'm not sure if I'll keep it.

    Long-sleeve Pocket Tee in Stripe:
Really cute and soft. Not sheer at all. I got "shoreline blue" and "seaside coral". Fits pretty TTS (maybe slightly tight in the arms).

    Lightweight Washed Chambray Pants:
Sigh. If I didn't own a mirror and lived in a community full of blind people, I would wear these pants every day. They feel magical. The side view is cute. I could maybe walk sideways all day. I might try ordering a size down to see if that helps...

    Colorblock Ponte Dress:
LOVE this. It feels a little looser than the solid color A-line Ponte Dress. This one is really flattering and so comfortable. Got my usual size 2.

    1. Re: neon dyes

I can't speak about the Vintage Cotton Cap Sleeve Tee itself, but I recently bought a neon pink shirt from the Gap and had no problems. The tee came with a special tag warning about neon dyes, color transfer, blah blah.

I had no problems whatsoever. I wore it without washing it first and wore it with white items (white shorts and the Daisy lace mini). No problems in the wash either.

      Delete
    2. I've bought many neon items (particularly pink) from both JCrew and Gap that come with similar warning hang tags...I've never had issues with the color rubbing off. I usually wash them inside out, along or with other neon pink items to prevent laundry issues, but other than that, no problems!

    3. Thanks for making my day Jenny. There are MANY days I wish I lived in a community of blind people! LOL on that comment.

  18. I got my order from the new roll out today. When I first opened the Collection watercolor floral blouse 65852 I thought it didn't look that special, but when I tried it on I loved it. It really is a beautiful blouse. I got a 10 and a 12 and am keeping the 10 so I would say go with the smaller of your JCrew sizes in this blouse if it comes back in stock.
I wasn't impressed with the Collection pocket tee in Mai Tai floral 65754. It looks like an H&M print to me. I got a 10 and 12 in this and if I were keeping it, I would need the 12 because it is short. I don't think that there is anything special about it for the price.
I love the new Liberty Peter Pan shirt in Saeed floral 43500. I think it's cuter in real life than in the photo. I ordered a 12 and a 14 in this because the Liberty shirts can be cut small, but the 12 is perfect.
I also love the Short-sleeve Indian cotton popover in madras 01920. I got a 12 in this but it's a little big and I'm going to order a 10 and see if the fit is better. I'd say it runs a little large.
Hope this helps while the 30% off is still around.

  20. Stripe wrap skirt (58132) - TFS (I'll give you a hint, the S stands for "short"). The concept is cute, but you'd have to walk with your knees together to avoid a Lindsay-Lohan-getting-out-of a-boat-at-Cannes wardrobe malfuntion. This was after I sized up to gain some length. I'm disappointed that JC continues to hack off an inch or two at the hemline between the time they take the model pics and the time the item goes into production. Also, the wrap portion does not fall as cleanly as it does in the pic (even after sizing up). I'm curious to size up again, but ultimately don't feel it's worth the hassle.

  22. Wore my new 9 inch Stanton men's shorts item 23863 in neon kiwi (green)in size 31 the other day. Love the fit. It's advertised as a classic fit but to me it fits slim which I prefer. The waist is TTS and I believe the 9 inch length is 'sexier' than the 11 inch shorts.

I wore a navy BR milly design polo with it which looks great with the neon green. Wearing a bright bottom I want to wear a 'quiet' top just to balance it out. Wore a navy striped belt and white Jack Purcells sneakers to complete the outfit.

Love the shorts so much that I want to get it in lemon zest (yellow) but they don't have 31s anymore.

  23. A bit OT, but there seem to be a lot of new sale items today. I succumbed to the red butterfly scarf, which I've been wanting for a while. I got it with the extra discount for international customers, so it ended up being a good deal.

  28. Does anyone have any reviews on the Janey patent flats? Are they true to size, narrow, small? They have some fun colors and I'd love to buy them without having to drive to a B&M.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they are TTS, unlike some JC shoes where you have to size up by 1/2. I am a small 8, and size up to 8.5 in pointy shoes, but in these, I can wear a 7.5 or an 8, and in the 8, have to put in an insert. Not at ALL narrow. To be safe if you can't try them on, I would order your normal shoe size.

      Delete
    2. I would also say TTS, though (as with many patent shoes), they will stretch a little bit after wearing them for awhile. I took a 9, which is my usual Jcrew size for flats.

      Delete
    3. All of the Janeys I have tried run TTS in my regular shoe size, not my J Crew size. I am 7.5 and almost always take 8 in J Crew shoes. In the Janeys, definitely a 7.5.

I reviewed the glitter Janeys & calf hair Janeys.

Reviews of the patent on Rose & on Rynetta.

    4. TTS! I'm an 8 in almost all shoes, and I'm an 8 in the patent Janeys. I have wide feet and these are pretty comfortable.

    5. Thank you Audreys, Gabriela, Gigiofca, and Cate.

I have wide feet as well and have never had luck with JCrew's shoes. I will pull the trigger then.

      Squishes ladies!!

    6. Ditto. I've got wide feet and Janeys are the only shoe that fits me in this season's selection.

      Delete
    7. I didn't like all the toe cleavage on my wide feet but found them true to size. I have the black patent and they have not stretched much for me and are tight across the top of my foot. BUT, this may be just a rogue shoe. Lately, JCrew has not been consistent with their sizing even in shoes.

  29. Re: the Janey patent flats. I find they run TTS (my normal size not jcrew normal). I wear a 8.5 in my Janey patent flats. I wear a 8 in Jcrew ballet flats and a 9 in their heels. Hope this helps!

  32. I picked up the utility chino and I love but they do run a bit snug in the upper leg. I still went with my normal size. I also love the peasant silk top and I ordered my normal size in 4; the striped sleeveless top in black is my new favorite along with the peplum top in ivory. I have a few picks on my blog: www.seaquinedseagull.blogspot.com.

I also like the pineapple gold tee and for fruit prints, this is enough for me. I almost bit on the skirt but after thinking about it, it's just too much big pineapple I know I'll be sick of next year. I wish I could love the desert floral top but I cannot. After reading some reviews, I tend to agree it's just not great for heat.

  37. Broken in Boyfriend chino shorts- I love the scuba blue color, got these on popback. I can't say if they are truly tts - I took the same size as in one pair of 9 " chino shorts but another pair of 9" chino shorts required a bigger size for me. I went with measurements from cs. I don't love the fraying on the broken in shorts but I'm keeping them because I love the color and fit is good.

Double crepe skirt (fresh pear) - I sized up one size to get more length because I won't wear skirts that short. It is def. poufy, my normal size would fit better except it was noticeably shorter. Im 5'7" so the poufyness didn't bother me. Sizing up made me feel comfortable with the length. It is a nice substantial material and I love the Fresh Pear color.

Linen cotton drawstring pants- I haven't worn them yet so I don't know how wrinkly they'll get but I found them really comfortable and flattering for casual pants. I took the same size as in scout chinos.

Botanical banana linen tank - I sized down one size for a better fit and really liked it on irl. I was on vacation so perhaps the tropical vibe kicked in. It is very sheer in the back though. I'm small chested, I could see this print looking weird if someone is big chested as some JCAs have mentioned.

Wanted to mention that I saw scout chinos marked down last weekend (violet 19.99; rouge 29.99). I also picked up the pink striped Oxford popover for 19.99 before discount. The aventura Florida b&m had quite a few on Tuesday.

I also purchased the colorblock tartine satchel, marked 169.99 before discount. I couldn't resist it at that price although not in the budget. I need an intervention from all of the sales. :)

    1. Broken in Boyfriend Chino Shorts - I'm living in my scuba blue shorts!! Considering a back up pair/duplicate.
Not usually a fan of 'broken in' but my pair isn't so bad, and the bright (but not too bright), pretty color seems to make it less noticeable. Also, the fabric feels so much nicer than the regular 3", 4", 5", etc. length shorts. Def size down one time! They will stretch out, esp if you wear them a couple times before washing.

    2. I agree that the color makes the fraying less noticeable. Isn't it a great color! I had to keep stalking for a popback. :) darn, I wish I would have sized down.

  38. I forgot to mention that my swoop top in punk floral popped the top stitch in the back. I was wearing it getting ready to go out for dinner and the top stitch broke literally after about 10 min. of wear. I was leaning to put my shoes on when it happened, it didn't feel like it was pulling across the back and it isn't tight on me. I was so mad, I had to change because you could really see my bra.

Did you have to size up/down in it? It seems like you could size down so it doesn't look like a mumu!

    2. Seahorseluvr- I took my usual size 2 for silk tops (ie also hothouse floral blouse) and still felt it was loose through the body but didn't try sizing down because I thought the shoulders would be tight. I can get a tailor to sew a stitch but I hate to pay more money. The price tags are still on as I was going to have my dh cut them before we went out but I don't know if I should return it as defective or still keep it. Also, just a fyi the sewn in tags (with size and jcrew name will have to be cut out or else you'll see them.)

I'd suggest reinforcing the stitch right away if you buy it. Have you tried a store search for it? That way if you have a problem at least you could return it. If you call a store directly you can ask a SA to check inventory of stores from their computer. HTH

  39. I am with you on shelling out more money to ensure the blouse doesn't provide a "show" when you've already paid so much. Sheesh...

You know, I haven't because I always get the "well if it's on sale we can't look for it" routine which in turn forces me to call store to store.

    Thanks for your help!

    1. Try calling a store directly and ask theSA to check the computer, they always do it for me even if on sale. They can tell you which stores show it and you then call them yourself to do a charge send. CS at the 800 number won't check normally if its on sale so I call a store instead.

  40. Ok, I have one more question about pulling the trigger on a pair of shoes on EBay and love for someone to humor me for a moment. :)

I am a true 8 but depending on the cut size up to 8.5 or 9 (usually in JCrew). I also have wide feet (yay!...).

The Sasha suede pump, Everly mirrored pump, or the Etta Cap toe in mirrored silver. The good news is with one of the sellers I can return them if need be.

Size up 1/2 or a full size? Thanks loves!

    1. I have the Everly mirrored pump and went up a whole size and they're perfect. With most of J. Crew's pumps, I have to go up a whole size, and especially for these because they are so pointy.

  41. I tried on the Skinny Utility Chino because I love the olive color and my usual size was scandalously tight. One size up fit better, not spandex tight, just right.
