American Express + J.Crew = Gifts!

A big "thanks!" to jbird (in this post) who shared the following news with us:
Do you have an Amex card? Register it here: https://giftchain.amexnetwork.com for their gift chain promo. JCrew is one of the participating retailers.
Definitely sign up and register if you have an American Express card! The rules seem pretty simple:
Join The Gift Chain by registering any eligible American Express® Card. Then, use that Card to spend $25 or more at a participating online store between November 28 and December 21, 2011, and you could get a surprise gift. That’s it. It’s that easy. With gifts ranging from statement credits, to ShopRunner memberships to incredible gift cards, some of which you can share with 3 Facebook friends, you never know what you have a chance to get.
Good luck American Express card-holding JCAs!

  3. I was excited about this promotion, but trying to get customer service support yesterday was a nightmare. I've always been really happy with my American Express card, mainly due to the excellent customer service, but I didn't experience that yesterday.

Within a few minutes after I placed my qualifying order with J.Crew, I received an e-mail from American Express telling me I won four $10 gift certificates: one for me and three to share on Facebook. Nice, right? Except the mode of delivery is for American Express to post the link to the gift certificate on the recipient's Facebook page, and two of my three friends did not receive the link.

I called American Express customer service, per instructions in the promotion, but no one there seemed to know anything about the promotion. After transferring me around a bit, the fifth person I spoke with had heard of the program, but knew far less than I, and had no idea how to resolve the issue. In fact, she told me the gift certificates were forfeited if the recipients didn't receive the link as she didn't know how to resend or retrieve it.

I decided to post my problem on the American Express Facebook page, under the promotion, as surely those employees were familiar with the program and could help me. Instead of trying to resolve my problem, the employees in charge of Facebook deleted my post and blocked me from their Facebook page! I was absolutely shocked! This is NOT the kind of response I expect to receive from American Express.

So, if you can get the promotion to work properly without any issues, it's a nice promo. If not, don't expect to get any help from American Express.

  4. Jeanne, that really stinks! That is shameful on Amex's part; their customer service is usually pretty decent. I would call until I got satisfaction from someone higher in the food chain. With my order yesterday, I got a membership to Shoprunner, but I don't think I will be using it.

  5. I purchased an order from J Crew yesterday and still haven't heard about my gift.

On the other hand, the gift for my Walmart purchase (Starbucks cards!) came within an hour.

  6. I too signed up for the Gift Chain, made a JCrew purchase using both my AX and JCrew card. All I got was an email saying I had won a year subscription to the Shop Runner and JCrew isn't on their list of stores.

  7. I agree about the Shoprunner membership. It's worthless IMO. There are only a couple stores I shop that accept it, and they already offer free shipping. It's not much of a gift.

I may have found someone to help me with my gift certificate issue. I sent an e-mail to Amex last night and received a response this afternoon from a woman who said she's working on getting the gift certificate links for me. I'm hopeful, as she's the first person, out of the many I contacted, who showed any interest at all in resolving this issue.

I also placed more orders through the program and received two more $50 sharing gift certificates! There's no way I'm going to try to send them on Facebook until this issue is resolved. It's bad enough to possibly lose $10gift certificates; there's no way I'm going to accept losing $50 gift certificates!

  8. Jeanne: Your situation is terrible! I hope AmEx not only remedies your situation, but also apologizes about deleting your comment from their FB page.

  9. @Jeanne -- hope your problem gets fixed. you are quite the lucky winner!

I got a $20 statement credit for my Jenna sweater ordered on Monday, which seems like appropriate karma since that brings it down to the B&M markdown price!

  10. Thanks for the good wishes, Alexis and Rosie. :)

I felt really brave and optimistic last night and decided to go ahead and try to send the $50 sharing certificates. As my DS already sucessfully received the $10 certificate, I thought I'd be safe sending more to him. My DIL doesn't use Facebook, so I helped her to set up a new account to receive the certificates. I also worked with my DD, who had the problem with the $10 certificate, to set up a new account to receive the larger certificates. Although we were unable to identify the problem, I suspected that the failure to receive the certificates had something to do with the recipients' Facebook settings, so we left the new account settings on default. Success! They received the links and we were able to enter their mailing addresses to ship the gift certificates. Assuming they arrive safely, I won over $400 in American Express gift certificates for myself and my loved ones, plus several smaller gifts, including several statement credits, just for doing my usual J. Crew shopping and ordering a few Bed, Bath and Beyond gift certificates. (I shop at BBB regularly, so I'll use them quickly.) A nice promo. :)
