A big "thanks!" to Sweetmint who not only let us know about one of J.Crew's new arrivals being featured in the latest issue of In-Style magazine, but also scanned the image for us to view! (Click on the image itself or here to see it larger.)The item is a beautiful short-sleeved cardigan described as "cashmere with rhinestones" and retails for $198. This is a new item, yet to be released online and is slated as an "upcoming Spring" item.
I love cardigans and its versatility. However, I am not a fan of short-sleeved cardigans. I love long-sleeved and especially 3/4-sleeved, but not short-sleeved cardigans. They never seem to look "right" on me. Which is sad because I have seen some JCA's rockin J.Crew's short-sleeved cardigans, which make me want to wear them too! :)
What are your thoughts on the new short sleeved cashmere cardigan (e.g. do you like/ dislike the rhinestones)? Do you like short-sleeved cardigans in general? What is your preferred length for cardigans? :)
I like the retro 50s-60s thing, so I am down with this cute rhinstone/beaded cardigan. Would look great with a double serge pencil skirt... :)

ReplyDeleteI agree about the short sleeved cardigans but for another reason. As my grandfather used to say, it is either too cold for a short sleeve sweater(and you wish you had longer sleeves) OR it is too hot for the short sleeve one! I agree completely! Pretty sweater though in general.

I love cardigans, but I agree that short sleeve ones can be tricky. I am willing to wear a long sleeve tee or button down under a short sleeve cardi, but it depends on what kind of look you a re going for. You could dress this one down with a simple long sleeve tee and jeans, or play up the feminine details with a ruffled or bow blouse.
ReplyDeleteI love to wear short-sleeve cotton cardis over bikini tops and throw on a knit mini for the bottom. Much nicer than most shapeless cover-ups and more acceptable in some resorts where there is a dress code. I wouldn't wear cashmere around the pool or beach though. Saltwater or chemicals couldn't be a good thing for it.

ReplyDeleteThis is pretty but I have to wonder about the rhinestones. Not that he's the ultimate source but Karl Lagerfeld recently said that "Bling is over." There have been a number of designers touting more practical and conservative elements in their upcoming lines as well. I guess in tough times people go back to basics in clothing as well as other facets of life.

Is it mint green or grey? Either way I'm in love and I have a $25 gift card that I need to use up <3 It would be great over a dress or with a tank to give a more adult/dressed up feel to an outfit without adding too much warmth in the summer. Very office appropriate.

ReplyDeleteQuestion: Is it just me or do JCrews party dresses look too much like brides maid dresses to be worn if you are just a guest at the wedding? For some reason I always feel like I would look like a missplaced brides maid.

Dani, ITA re: bridesmaids dresses. I wouldn't wear one just as a guest b/c it would look like you just recycled it from another wedding. There are a few styles in the non-taffeta fabrics (like the cotton cady) that look simple enough that they are not glaringly "bridemaids dresses" though.

Cotton-cashmere ruffle cardigan item 13504. It is open enough and thin enough I can see wearing it in early summer/fall as shown on the model.
I think this carigan is cute, but I gotta agree with earlier poster about the color. I already had two gray cardigans, don't need another one!
ReplyDeleteamers72: I just rec'd the crocodile merino cardi and liked it alot. I did return it though because I purchased it at full price, and it is not something I can't live without. It's your standard JCrew merino print cardi. Don't get me wrong, they're great but I'm not dying to have this one.

To all who are asking about the color - I also have a subscription to In-Style and I can tell you that the sweater is mint green, not gray. It's a very beautiful pastel for spring.

ReplyDelete@ dani_california: I think it would depend a great deal on how you accessorized the dress, regardless of whether it was a recycled bridesmaid dress or not. I think that generally brides want their maids to look fairly uniform, and to not wear anything that would distract from the "main event" (i.e., the bride and groom... but mostly the bride! :)). So the dress is pretty much a blank canvas! If I purchased a JC bridesmaid dress, I would definitely try to wear it again, probably with sexy, unique shoes, a grosgrain ribbon belt, nice jewlery, a pretty wrap, and a gorgeous clutch. (Too bad this isn't the 80s, or I might throw in a funky hat! Lol, j/k!) Anyway, my point is that I think any piece of clothing is what you make of it, so I wouldn't be deterred by how something looked in a previous incarnation.

ReplyDeleteI definitely prefer 3/4 sleeve cardigans and tees. In my opinion, they're far more flattering on just about everyone, and the 3/4 sleeve avoids the necessity of pushing up your long sleeves to show your bracelets. And it just seems a contradiction that a sweater should have short sleeves!

ReplyDeleteI agree with what some others have said--a short-sleeved jacket or sweater never made much sense to me. If'n I'm cold enough to want a sweater, I want to have long sleeves--and if'n it's hot, then the sweater material will be too thick to wear.

I think I would love this and wear it a lot in spring, with a tank or even a long sleeve tee...but not for $200. If I see it in store, I will try it on and then stalk it online until the price goes down.

Dani -- I kind of agree. I have a clearance outlet store near me, and they have a ton of dresses, but I've only ever bought one, b/c they mostly remind me of bridesmaids' dresses! Now I know it's not just me....

ReplyDeleteOkay, thanks for the tips. About the Rimini's: the leather is great and the fit, for me, is perfect and I wear a size 9. I'm guessing the shoes are similar in the flats and the heels, and I was cautioned about getting that darker espresso color from my PS, because I have fair skin. The burnt sienna is great for neutrals. I love the flats, personally, but am afraid of a Roman Centurion look because of that ankle strap! I've asked JC to waive the FS deal before because I was too wary of the fit of an item, and they agreed. You might want to try this.

I bought Danielle sandals in Deep Brown and the Burnt Sienna and have to agree the Burnt Sienna is less noticeable on the foot. I like the darker leather straps in the Danielle sandal because they do not have an ankle strap. The Danielle's are comfortable...but not on sale.
Ah, I'm going to order the Rimini's in the burnt sienna. My main concern was having the 'gladiator' look. After a quick look around on line, these aren't a bad price for a very subdued gladiator look.

Ooohh I love short sleeve cardis! I'm one of those slight breeze and I'm freezing type of people, so an extra layer is helpful. Plus, they can help dress up a basic tee/tank. Not a mint green fan though...

ReplyDeleteLiving in Texas, a short-sleeved cardigan is a beautiful thing. You cover up your silk cami going into the office, and you throw that sweater off when you head out into the 100+ heat!
ReplyDeleteShort-sleeved cashmere seems decadent, definitely too impractical for me. If the rhinestones are heavy and the cashmere is featherweight, it would be difficult for me to justify spending that price. When I feel cold enough to need a layer, my arms are usually included.
ReplyDeleteRE: rimini sandals, Last year's riminis were flat, tight, and not adjustable. This year's model has an extra ankle strap and appears to be adjustable. I haven't tried on the 09 riminis, so I can't speak to their tightness. I liked last year's style because I wear a narrow width. Got the black (sz 7), wish I had also gotten the gold.

Julie: do you mean last year's Santorini flats? If so,I agree they were designed for narrower foot. The fit is what stopping me from considering Rimini flats, as it seems both Santorini and Rimini are similar in design. I have normal to wide-ish foot and found thin straps to be very uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteHa! I just got a good laugh. I called CS about the width of the Rimini (thanks for bringing up width Slastena!). She said the shoe is 2"!!!! wide at the narrowest part, and just under 4" (3-15/16") at the widest part.
ReplyDeleteWhen you look at the aerial view of the sandal it sounds completely possible. But this must be a production error. My seven year olds feet are wider than 2"!
I think I'll call back and get the measurement for the Danielle or Fiona. Both of which I have tried on and fit fine.
I really like this sweater, but would probably not get much use out of it, as too similar to my cashmere dewdrop cardi. Not sure about the short sleeves. Looks darling, but I feel hot at 60 degrees, so not practical for me.

This sweater is very, very similar to a cardi I purchased from BR back in Fall 2005 which I still have. My version is a short-sleeved mid-tone grey cardi, with rhinestone buttons, and white and clear beading on the upper right of the front in the shoulder in the shape of a flower. The sleeves have a sweet little tie bow at the cuff. It is one very vintagey looking sweater and I am ashamed to say I have not worn it more. The cardi also came in ivory. I remember all this so well because I was desperate to find it in grey, but all that was left online was ivory, but t just so happened that someone returned a grey to my local store when I was there for something else. Since the store did not carry this line (see below) I felt I really lucked out.
ReplyDeleteI believe I paid $78 for it full price. BR had a small capsule line that fall of special "collection" pieces that were only available online or on certain stores. Hrmm, this story is starting to sound very similar to JC, eh?
