JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  2. Hi folks, could really use some assistance - I bought the garden shade skirt and am loving it - am looking for more top ideas besides the neon azalea option (though I am on the fence about the blazer - yea or nay..) any other ideas?

Am also contemplating the eyelet skirt in the chili - styling ideas?

  3. WMM, I got the No. 2 eyelet pencil skirt in chili last week. I have tested it with the Silk peplum blouse in ivory and a double breasted leather jacket in a warm caramel color to tone down the red a bit for a more conservative look. I couldn't figure out the shoes on that outfit though.
I will definitely be wearing it with my navy blue cashmere short sleeve tee during spring and a navy tee during summer because I adore the way navy and the red look together.
I think it would look great as styled in the catalog with a blue striped dress shirt (not knotted though).
That's all I got so far...

    1. I would try shoes in either a nude or something in the brown family (something that goes with the jacket, but doesn't look like you're trying to match them). I hope it works!!!

  4. Gigi, I almost fell off my chair when I read your comment, thought it was 30% off everything. I'm such a sucker! (*_*)

  5. WMM...D*ska has great ideas. I bought this skirt, too, and made some sets on PV. I'm planning to wear with a chambray button down and white button down. I think navy stripes or polka dots might look cute, too. Definitely love navy with it, like D*ska. Also, in spring will wear with a denim jacket over a simple tee. In the summer, I'll wear a tee or tank in white or navy. One of my sets has a white tee with a turquoise necklace. The Max and Molly tee looks cute with it, too, if you have that one. Another features the black tee with white rose graphic and black espadrille wedges. I also love red with light aqua or yellow. As far as shoes, I like sandals--flat, heeled or wedges. Brown, black, nude, navy, yellow and aqua would all work. I think this skirt will be quite versatile! Good luck! :)

  6. Thanks D*ska and KittyWitty - great ideas! I really love the turquoise necklace idea - so fresh! I am going to pull the trigger today as I am so loving it! I think I till go with the chambray as well!

Many thanks! The Chambray would also be nice the gardenshade floral, too! The red was not in my summer "colour story" to quote Dani, but I think it must be mine....

  7. WMM: I'm wearing the Gardenshade pencil today with a navy Stretch Perfect shirt, navy tights and pumps, and a jade patent skinny belt. Last week I wore it with a Pale Coral Jackie sweater over a white tee, metallic gold skinny belt, nude fishnet tights and camel pumps. If the weather gets cool again (currently high 70's here), I'll pair it with my Spearmint cashmere Boyfriend cardigan. HTH!

  8. Lovers of the Eyelet Pencil: Are you worried that it will catch on something and tear the skirt? This is the main reason I haven't purchased it - I tore an eyelet dress once and the patch job turned out okay, but I could only wear it for pretty casual functions after that.

  9. Whitney, the thought crossed my mind for a millisecond when it caught on the hook and eye closure of a closet neighbour. IMO, the fabric looks like it can withstand some pulls and tugs but nothig too forceful. I'm not really worried though. I look at it this way, if I had to worry about wearing my clothing, half the stuff in my closet would never get worn, lol

  10. @ D*ska: Haha, true :) I have the Schoolboy blazer in eyelet, but I'm less worried about that item since I got it for $35 on FS popback. I might just have to wishlist that pretty red skirt and hope that my size is still around come sale time.

  11. Whitney - I actually have the coral jackie - now I am going to dig it ou - great inspiration! I have last year's circle eyelet skirt in Navy and had no issues, so I am hoping will be the same with the red skirt! These are always concerns of mine as I am a klutz!

  13. Whitney, I think the eyelet on this skirt is sturdy and thick. It's not like a thin, cotton eyelet. I'm a total klutz and I'm not worried. :) I don't think this skirt is going to make it to sale time--esp. once people start trying it on! :D

    1. Thanks for the input on the thickness, I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on that skirt by the minute!

  14. Styled my J Crew SchoolBoy Blazer in Navy with a maxidress. Wanted a casual feel with a touch of sophistication. Can you JCA readers please tell me what you think?

  15. WMM, I also got the gardenshade floral skirt. I have an OOTD on my blog today, and links to the various other tops that would work with that skirt, as well as to older posts where I was trying that skirt on. One other option is the Jackie in the intense blue colour as well, since there are bits of blue throughout the pattern. HTH

  16. @Kim - I love the blazer with the maxi!

The only thing I would swap out is the dark, structured bag. Its a beautiful bag, but looks a little heavy with the light flowy dress and general softness that the hat and sandals provide.

  17. Ladies I hope you can help. I have been collecting some really pretty printed dresses & skirts from JCrew & Anthro (jcrew-watercolor floral skirt, crimson floral silk skirt, anthro-aven bloom dress, butterfly net dress & some other solid dresses-anthro's secret treasures thanks to FFM's review).

I tend to be more simple a la Madewell's pic of the model with jeans, a button down and sweater over BUT i am in the deep south and need to embrace the heat in dresses.

I need help with shoes. I want sandals that I could potentially wear with prints or solids and was considering the Seaside sandal (now $60) from Madewell. I am 6' tall and wear a size 11.
I have also been checking out some Naya sandals on ebay since i would like to keep the price around $60 or lower on a pair of shoes I imagine I'll wear out. I think JCrews sandals right now are too fancy for me to run after 3 boys...
    No 4" heels please!

Style advice for a simple, stylish, comfortable, heeled sandal for a flipflop/oxford kinda girl...
    goodness that was long!

    Thanks.
    Marisa

**also could use some help for tops for those mentioned skirts!**
