"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. New promo is 30% off sale - I think there's a glitch though, as I just ordered two pairs of Elsies for 50% off each (score!). Hope others get to take advantage :)

    1. Saw that, thanks, J. Lee! Almost bought the Elsies in Tidewater, but decided, realistically, that I probably won't get much use out of them as I prefer kitten heels. Still an excellent deal for fellow JCAs at $120.

    2. I love the Elsie heels so was glad to take advantage of this - I had purchased the vibrant berry color on Saturday for 40% and got a price adjustment for the 50% off this morning. I have been wanting shoes this color so I was happy with the price albeit odd that they're "promo priced" at $5 off with the 50% off.

    3. Anne, wondering if this is one of their infamous pricing/coding errors -- those Dulcis in kraft brown/rose ash/black that were recently priced at 'Full price but final sale' have finally been corrected (so that they're no longer at Final sale.) Anyways, great that you're able to get a PA! That berry is gorgeous. (Incidentally, do you take your Elsies in the same or different size as Dulcis, for comparison?) Would you say they're TTS?

      Delete
    4. @TM93 I haven't tried the Dulci pumps yet - I'm pretty much the same size across the board in Crew shoes which is a half size larger than most other brands. So for me they are TTS.

  2. New arrivals on the website, nothing I need to have without a promo. I can't imagine paying full price for anything these days, even though I want one of the new dresses I'm not going to bite without a promo.

    1. Same. They've stuck a cactus onto the front of a Tippi? I kind of liked the bell sleeve dress. Overall it seems like a lot of basics without much that stands out as special.

    2. looks like recycling form last year...one of the pics has the model wearing the malta sandals. same average stuff.with a few prints tossed in. its like they are even trying anymore. not even a wishlisted item for me this time around....

    3. I agree. I have no idea what I'm going to spend my rewards on.

    4. All I really wanted from this roll-out are the Rayner chinos, that I ordered last night using the GETSHOPPING promo. With a grey Jackie Merino shell to add, the chinos were $10 less. Wow, what a discount. (sarcasm)

There is nothing I really needed ASAP. I wishlisted: Silk popover in polka dot, Mini bucket bag in peri, and Cracked Metallic Kikis.

I was even looking at Collection pieces, and nada.
Some of the prints though, I can't deal. Watercolor floral? Romantic floral? J.Crew used to source really beautiful prints...Prints that Prada or Marni would use; But who is picking these prints?? And they made sweeping ball gown skirts? What is going on?

      Delete
    5. @JSR I agree on the prints. They are terrible, and so similar to every other boring, unattractive floral that J. Crew has put out for the last three seasons.

  3. New arrivals are disappointing. No beautiful shoes. The perforated leather dress was compelling to me until I saw the zipper, which makes the dress seem cheap and dated.

  4. I would have bought the daisy shirt but naturally, they didn't make it in tall.

    1. The daisy shirt was listed as 26 3/4 inches long which is the same as the Stewart plaid shirt which was way too short on me and I'm just 5'3". Pity!

      Delete
    2. I tried this on in store the other day...I am 5'1 and the shirt ran so small, even a size 6 regular was quite short on me

      Delete
    3. I'm wearing the daisy shirt today (again) in my normal size 8 and I'm over 5'8". The shirt fits normal on me; definitely not short as the shirt bottom reaches the pockets of my Saturday pants. Maybe this is one of those "batch" cutting issues?

      Delete
    4. Shopping celle, I'm surprised you found the Stewart plaid shirt short. I am 5'4 with a long torso and had no problem with it being short. Maybe you got a bad "batch" as mygoddy suggested. I like when tops are at least 23 in. Anything shorter than that usually doesn't work for me.

  5. FYI: My bookmarked items are all messed up and it might be due to the recent mobile site update. Many show no stock when there is actually stock available. For some I had to go in and bookmark them back in to make them work. If you use this method to check for popbacks, you may be missing things in stock. Sadly nothing I had on my wish list was available in my size and once again I may be sitting out a free ship & extra % off day! Bah!

  6. Indirect J. Crew vent...so many people on here speak so highly of Boden and how it is like J. Crew and there was a Boden warehouse sale this past weekend and I was excited to go as I had not really seen Boden clothes....HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT...I so badly wanted to like it and buy stuff but the sizing was all off. Both pants and tops ran super small and the stuff just was not that cute...Not J. Crew looking. Almost seemed more like a more traditional looking Anthropolgie. Only thing that looked like it could be J. Crew were button down shirts in patterns...I would have bought one but couldn't find any in my size..which was 1-2 sizes bigger than I wear in any other brand....All in all walked away with nothing with no future plan to shop Boden but I would check out anotehr warehouse sale if it came to my area

    1. That's a shame. Boden may have had the sizes British sizes on some pieces which are smaller than US sizes.

      Delete
    2. They had both the British and US sizes listed on the clothing tags....I went by the US size when trying on and still everything seemed to run tiny.

      Delete
    3. I think Boden has always run small compared to J Crew. I'm a sz.0-2 in J Crew, while always need a sz. 4-6 in Boedn's US sizing. I reality, I don't think Boden runs small though, I think we're all just used to the ridiculous vanity sizing with US based brands.

      Delete
    4. Agreed. I usually need to order an 8 in skirts/ pants from Boden but always am at least a 6 if not 4 in J. Crew. Boden pants fit me much better than J. Crew and I think Boden's quality is much better right now.

      Delete
    5. I tend to agree with you, eyptomaniac -- I'm a size 0-2 in JCrew, which is a bit of a joke, b/c with the big design houses, DVF, Kors, etc, I'm a size 6-8. I suspect Boden runs closer to the actual sizes than what we're used to as of late, like you said. Even H & M and Zara go with true sizes so I take those brands in bigger sizes than I do for JC.

      Delete
    6. I personally never shop from Boden anymore. It is like J.Crew in the sense that it's all overpriced stuff, only British. None of it is particularly chic or fashionable, more like childish and whimsical. I know most people love lots of color but I don't, unless I'm at the beach or something.

  7. Added a couple of new arrivals to my wish list but no % off? No thanks. I'll wait it out. Not to mention the mobile site is so annoying. It never remembers me so I have to log in every time and when I click on items in my wish list I get an oops error and am redirected.

Quick question tho: gingham boy shirt... This is really wide in the body in my size. Have people been sizing down? Worried about shoulders being too small. I feel like I can't trust website reviews

    1. I can't get their new mobile site to work on my iphone. I have to click into their full site to access their website now.

  8. Does anyone know if there is any new arrival promotions going on in stores? First look nights? I might bite with my rewards if so.

  9. I was disappointed that the gingham Kikis are not part of this rollout. I stayed up last night to take advantage of the GETSHOPPING promo on new arrivals but besides these there was nothing I really wanted this minute. I still got the sailor Teddies and a pair of solid Kikis to check out the color and the full discount (Teddies came down to $78 which is a price I am willing to pay since I can wear them now)

    1. Also disappointed that the featherweight cashmere shell in gingham was excluded from all promos. Oh well, I will survive

    2. I tried to stay awake for the roll over and had a popback skirt in my bag. The new promotion loaded a little later than normal. I closed my eyes for a second and the skirt was snatched from my cart! Boohoo!

    3. I had something similar happen with a scarf, Shopping Celle! It popped back after being sold out for awhile and was on final sale, but I suspected there would be a sale promo and free shipping if I tried to wait it out, but then I fell asleep early.

  11. new arrivals look cute...best roll out in a long time...love that bunny tippi...I see they re did the jackie with plain boring buttons and made it long sleeve now instead of 3/4....super sad about the changes...The classic jackie was very distinct and the new one just looks like it could be by any brand from anywhere...generic looking

  12. Ditto so many of the comments above. The only new arrivals that caught my eye were near-identical repeats of items I already have, and I feel like I'm playing hide-and-go-seek with my wishlist on the new mobile site.

  13. I'm getting tired of all of the spring/summer blazers being produced in linen and not cotton. Maybe it's a personal preference, but I don't love linen.

Also, the new cotton Campbell trouser colors read fall and not spring to me...smoked aubergine and dark cobalt would be great in September but not April!

    1. Agree with both of these comments, Anne. I don't love linen (tho it's preferable in super hot weather, I guess) b/c I feel like it wrinkles a lot faster. And ditto to both of those (admittedly lovely) colors -- definitely read fall! Oh well.

  14. I called for help with my order just now and asked about any promotions. The girl told me that there is 25% off if you use your JCrew card. I don't know the code for it but it's worth calling if there is something from new arrivals that you want. (Excludes collection)

    1. i just asked CS and she said 25% off new arrivals with jcrew CC... and that it should automatically apply at checkout but it doesn't. there's supposed to be an email... but she never gave me a code.

    2. I just posted from the New Arrivals thread...

To add: I just emailed J.Crew CS, and there is a 25% off full price code to use for Cardmembers!

'Code ZV5G5 to receive 25% off full-price styles as well as the discounts offered by our SHOPNOW promo.'

I did a mock check-out on new items, and it works! Not sure though what is excluded on this promo (really popular items, Collection?).

  15. I bought the classic flannel tartan pajama set (item E3822) in December and I wish I could return them as they are terrible quality - so thin, they almost could be warn in the summer. I already wore them a few times out of principle but I am considering contacting CS because they are not even worth the $35 I paid. I'm sort of amazed that they have sold out, actually. The only good thing about them is that the rise is a normal length as opposed to last year's version, which was dangerously low. Why would you make super low rise pajama bottoms? Anyway, there's one more instance of a product that was decent to begin with but has now been chipped away and cheapened into a shadow of its former self.

  16. In case there are people here who are not reading the new arrivals post, code
ZV5G5 gives 25% off (Card members and not), except for exclusions. Happy shopping!

  17. Anyone else have issues with holes in coat linings? I bought the Chateau parka in December and probably have worn it about 10 times and there is a hole in the armpit of one of the arms. I have been extremely careful with my rings as I did tear a lining on another coat with them one time. Just seems like that shouldn't happen after a mere 10 wears. Easily fixable but wish I did not have to.

    1. My husband surprised me with a metro coat a few years ago. It always gets tons of compliments but I am embarrassed when I take it off. The lining is tattered. I take excellent care of the coat.

  18. I have the same issue with the COLLECTION collarless wrap coat I bought THIS YEAR. I love the coat, but I only wear it a few times a week (if that) and the pockets and the lining are already all torn. The pockets are such that I can't put gloves or anything else in the pocket it in slips into the lining. Highly annoying and inconvenient. It's also one of the reasons why I don't trust any reviews where the reviewer says the quality is "suberb" when they've only worn the coat for a minute out of the box or for a photo shoot only. I actually feel like complaining to the company about this coat. The coat is gorgeous with clean lines and a great fit, but the quality is so horrible. This is a timeless coat that should last many seasons. Not a partial winter!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have had the same situation with the last 3 coats from J. Crew. I had 2 Bon Bon coats where the lining in the pockets completely shredded and an Envelope coat where the entire lining ripped apart. My new Cocoon coat worn only a dozen times this season (due to the milder winter) is starting to get a hole in the pocket. Im sure the shredding will follow. I too take extreme care of all my clothes and coats from Banana or Talbots have lasted years with no sign of wear. Only my J. Crew coats will barely get me through 2 seasons. I'm sure like the rest of I have multiple winter coats always in rotation. So no coat is being worn daily for months on end. The lining just does not stand up.

  20. Can we get rid of the Surepost nonsense? It's becoming extremely annoying because they actually don't use it in NYC even if the shipping notification email says so. So I receive the shipping notification for my order yesterday with a scheduled "Surepost" delivery date of Tuesday but the package showed up today at my door instead. I should be happy that the order came faster but I would like to know it in advance and be able to manage my UPS deliveries (which you can't do because supposedly they come from Surepost)! In this case I was with my husband who had just came back from a business trip and nothing annoys him more than finding my packages as a welcome back. Grrrr....
