"Thanks!" to so many of you including, jcbellemarie, gem twin, & silver_lining (in this post),who shared the following news.
J.Crew's SS2011 show is currently taking place right now for the Women's Collection. For live tweeting by Jim Shi, click here. I should also add that the above photo came from his tweets as well.
J.Crew's presentation for their Men's Spring Collection took place earlier today. For more information and photos (including the one directly above), refer to HypeBeast's "J.Crew 2011 Spring Presentation" post.
What are your thoughts on the upcoming Spring 2011 Collection? Are you excited or disappointed by J.Crew's take?
Except for the blue suede shoes, there's nothing here to look forward to the Men's Spring 2011 Collection. I was expecting slimmer and just tad shorter in length shorts.
ReplyDeleteWow are they screwing with the men's styling now too? My Dh would say, those guys look like d- bags. Don't blame me, his words LOL
ReplyDeleteCan't tell much on the women's
Ugh, c'mon J Crew give us something to get excited about.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a new stylist - there's a lot less layering and mounds of cheap-looking jewelry.
ReplyDeleteSocks with pumps.
ReplyDeleteChunky cardigans.
Sequin tanks/skirts.
Too-short shorts.
Unbrushed hair.
Borrowed from the boys.
Nudes/khakis with pops of color.
Um...
I like the outfit on the 3rd model in the pic and the dress on the 5th model, too. Yes, I actually like the neutral color palette they've been offering, but it does look like they're bringing back some brighter colors for those who don't.
ReplyDeleteLooked again....Frank looks good with his fall outfit (love the combo) presenting springwear. I kinda like the blue peaked lapel jacket of the model wearing shades but why is it cut too short? Also the unbuttoned sleeves looked sloppy. I would roll it up for the rebelious look but what's wrong with buttoning it in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI am still not 'feeling' that 'show the ankle narrow opening pants' with wingtips kinda look. Maybe I should give it a try with my plain toe cap black lace ups------hope I don't look like Goofy.
rtfit--my man has been experimenting with this and I really like it. Just a little ankle, needs a cuff or roll and summer only--my $.02
ReplyDeleteTaking a closer look too: The guy on the far left looks good and the 5th to the right pleated dress peeks my interest
ReplyDeleteLooks like plenty I will want to purchase. I love neutral with a pop of color so I am liking this. That short sleeve trench is wonderful. can't tell for sure but looks like they are doing another romper thing which I don't get but cute on the young girls.
ReplyDeleteI'm having a hard time telling anything from the photos. Hopefully there will be better ones.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there will be pieces I like, but the main issue I have is the QUALITY which has been rapidly declining. It's made me cut down drastically on my purchasing.
I'm with Shannon, I like the pleated dress.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise.. hard to tell. I do like the green I am seeing.
After taking another look, I also like the 1st and 2nd (from the left) outfits, as well as the dress on the 4th model (so basically I like looks 1-5 so far). I especially like that they didn't add a *pop of color* to any of those five and just left them with an overall tonal look/feel.
ReplyDeleteI actually saw quite a few things I liked (and even loved- HELLO PEPLUM SHORTS YOU NEEEEED TO BE MINE!)- and I'll admit it, I've been experimenting before with color thanks to J Crew's styling. While I can't get behind the odd hair or random layers shoved together a la Chic Hobo, I do like a lot of the fun twists of color they've been doing, and it's been entertaining to try to incorporate it into my own wardrobe as well. Especially since I tend to be Miss Matchy-matchy. *coughs*
ReplyDeleteA CHALLENGE!
My only beef is this- I know they've been making a *huge* deal over "new silhouettes" and "proportions". I dread, *dread* those phrases, as I'm guessing that ayone who isn't 5'8" + and model-slim is going to look bizarre in some (most?) of it. Especially the petites- I have an exact formula for dressing myself as to make myself look taller, and I'm not changing it for nothing, J Crew. NOTHING.
Other than that...I love spring clothes. I'm happy! Peplum shorts! Woo!
Here are a few more pictures with some different pieces: Click here
ReplyDeleteLet's try that link again...click here . (Hope it works this time). :)
ReplyDeleteDid I really just see a teal paisley romper? (Clutches pearls).
ReplyDeleteI like the long sequin skirt, but I wouldn't buy it, no place to wear it!
ReplyDeleteBarf. That's really all I can muster right now.
ReplyDeleteI remember there was a "khaki campaign" at the Gap a few years ago? They came out with khaki pants, shirts, skirts, dresses, jackets, trenches... anyone else recall? Maybe Mickey is "borrowing" an old idea? Bright pops of colours would look (and sell) quite well against a neutral backdrop. The exaggerated silhouette is def. a call back to the 90's. I'm gonna look at my old photos for some "what not to do's" now. Well, can't wait to get the spring catalogs and see the stuff IRL.
ReplyDeleteI have a visceral negative reaction to this dress: http://twitpic.com/33x27g.
ReplyDeleteThe unfinished waistband, the washed-out nude color, the double chest pockets (only good on flat-chested women!).
Basically, hates it!
I like it but I def don't see the "old J.Crew" they promised...
ReplyDeleteyeah, needs sequins...
ReplyDeleteI'll have to save my opinion for these pieces. My initial thoughts are more neutrals. :( I like them, but I can't wear them. I hope there's more color available than pictured here. I'm guessing sequins aren't going anywhere. :)
ReplyDeleteMuch of what they are showing for the guys is a continuation of this past spring. Again it's an evolution, not a revolution.
ReplyDeleteSome very cool items, but possibly some questionable ones; not more heavily patched chinos please even if they are limited. And BTW who's paying $350 for a bad home ed project?
awesome stuff for guys.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the womens, it's a great year to be pregnant, that's all I have to say....
None of these links seem to be working for me...boo. And the ones that do, I'm having a hard time seeing the clothes very well. Why are the images for the men's stuff so much clearer and better?
ReplyDeleteI like the spring collection, and I think that I better start saving my pennies. Call me crazy but I think the maxi sequin skirt will have to be mine....
ReplyDeleteI like the men's collection too, although no way my DH will be able to fit any of the looks, unless I tie him to the treadmill and go on vacation for a week or two.
Hard to really get a good look at the styles. Some look promising but I`m not crazy about the exaggerated silhouettes and more neutrals and nothing looks very new. Kind of a 60's influence, Mad Men maybe?
ReplyDeletethanks gem. I have no qualms about showing my ankles with penny loafers. It bodes well with narrow pant bottoms. I have yet to try it with black laceups---I think I will just wear bright socks with it :-)
ReplyDeleteIt looks refreshing, let's hope that they are not hiding the ruffles ...
ReplyDeleteI like the color palette; not sure about the proportions but it's definitively a departure from what we have seen these last few seasons. However, I must say that the chambray shirt with the long sequins skirt is stunning.
I suppose this is karma for me stating that I like the newer, edgier J Crew. But I saw this tonight, and thought, WTF?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/jewelry/necklaces/PRDOVR~35354/35354.jsp
First of all, feathers are never cool, down or otherwise when you educate yourself on the torture the animals undergo. Second, that necklace is just dumb, IMO. Then again, perhaps I should order the necklace along with some $75 stationery, what great deals.
Chloe. J.Crew should make you a "fit model" for us shorties. And style advisor.
ReplyDeleteI see some nice spring colours in women's clothes, so there's some hope.
ReplyDeleteNot excited.
ReplyDeleteJcrew, you suck. I'm seriously not interested in your sequined junk anymore.
ReplyDeleteI like that the items are clean and crisper looking, not wrinkled, worn, and distressed-looking like so many recent pieces from JC. I also like the pinks, whites and khakis. I think these neutrals can be flattering, unlike the military drab colors we have now. Some of the really poufy or shapeless stuff probably won't look good on most figures though. Peplum shorts are cute but they would look terribly on my figure. I could totally see chloe rock them though.
ReplyDeleteStyle.com has the Banana Republic Spring 2011. Their description is of a "heritage" collection. And there are plenty of knee length skirts, and below. They also have the Talbots preview. http://tinyurl.com/2ezgrx8 I think I like J. Crew spring better though.
ReplyDeleteAnd in my typical curmudgeon style, why are we already discussing spring clothes? Didn't we just put out warm weather clothing AWAY? Fashion seems to be increasingly disconnected from reality for those of us in cold climates. (I'm in MN). It gets frustrating when you go to a store and can't get seasonally appropriate clothing unless you buy in advance.
ReplyDeleteWFF, hilarious with only 3 words, well done.
Wow, JC is really trying to go couture or high fashion way? And I'll bet the prices will be even higher to begin with. Or maybe we're seeing more Collection items?
ReplyDeleteI do like the clean lines and less ruffles, but sequins are still going strong along with some studs, which I'm not big fan of.
As for the men's line, my DH will never wear his pants rolled up period. He's not old fashioned but I think you have to be in your twenties and have to have a model feature (tall and slender) to look great. He's 6' and wears size large so it would look pretty goofy if I tried to style him like here. And what the heck did they do to that khaki with block patches?
mens looks good (mostly). womens... mehhhh.
ReplyDeleteThe pros:
ReplyDeleteShoes look interesting
Colors look appealing
Prints are back - Yeah :))
Cons:
Length of skirts (AGAIN) - Let's hope they make some longer, more work appropriate.
Sequins - AGAIN - It's me.... I'm just sick of them!
I'm sure there will be some pieces I will have to get!
Peplum shorts = no (unless you are a stick). I don't know what I think about this stuff. Maybe I'm aging out of J Crew. I'm a little muddled. Reserving judgement until I see things in person. ...
ReplyDeleteNot loving it. But I'll reserve judgment til I can see better pics.
ReplyDeleteOh the sequins have to go enough is enough!
ReplyDeleteI really like the outfit on model #3 -- I hope those wide-leg pants are linen and that miraculously they're available before my beach vacation at the end of January :)
ReplyDeleteI'm also loving the khaki pencil skirt (shown beside the peplum shorts in one of the pics from FFM's link) -- it reminds me of the designer one Jenna was wearing last week at some show or other.
In summer I'm all about tones of sand, khaki and white with accents of colour. So far I like!
Check out Heather Clawson's blog
ReplyDeletehttp://habituallychic.blogspot.com/
for more coverage of the Spring roll out.
Last summer, I purchased mostly summer suiting for work bottoms as nothing else they were offering fit my lifestyle. Based on what I am seeing, I hope they put out more superfine cotton pencils or I will have nothing to wear. I do want that little short sleeve chambray shirt.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I think the women's collection looks cheap and tacky. It will be interesting to see it in person.
I do like some of the BR and Talbot's looks I have seen, so hopefully they will have some good options.
Jodi, thanks for the link to Heather's blog, you can really see the clothes there. And after looking at those images There is a lot that I like. Shoes look fabulous. That maxi sequin skirt with chambray shirt is delicious. And the gold jaquard full knee length skirt looks good. And I could totally copy the the whole outfit with pink cropped pants & caramel jacket!
ReplyDeleteOh my god...I love the Talbots spring collection. I'm alreday coveting a lot of stuff. J Crew may have lost me for good with this spring collection. I can't wear those colors...they wash me out, I can't even wear red because my skin is too pink as it is. I know the economy sucks and the world's going to pot, but these colors are straight out of Dickens...I love color, not garrish or loud, but happy and sometimes bold. All that khaki looks too military to me.
ReplyDeleteI just got a better look from Jodi's link.
ReplyDeleteI don't get it. It all seems a mess.
Oh well....that's just me though...
I found a better link on Examiner.com that shows each women's look . . one by one . . .so you can really get a good look! Here it is:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.examiner.com/fashion-photography-in-new-york/j-crew-women-s-spring-2011-collection-presentation-picture
I have to say, I'm not super excited. As a pale blonde, I was excited to see the orange one shoulder dress . .but it looks a sack and definitely not something I'd wear with a baseball hat. Maybe it will look better on?? The plaid looking cropped trench is cute too, but not much else makes me say "I must have that!"
Ooh! Found an even better link to even more pictures!
ReplyDeletehttp://shawnpunch.photoshelter.com/gallery/J-Crew-Womens-Spring-2011-Collection/G0000zItUe.aYL78
Hope that helps!
I also found each of the womens looks for close up viewing on glamour.com.
ReplyDeleteAfter eyeing each one I am sad to say I did not see anything I remotely liked:(
Hopefully, there will be much more to chose from than these looks!
Sorry, one last post. Does anyone else think that the shoes shown are very odd?? Also, what's up with the models and the extra hairy eye-brows? Strange . .
ReplyDeleteCCS, thanks for the link, this is really great to see each look.
ReplyDeleteLast night I was not impressed and thinking there was 60's influence with that big caftan-ish dress but today I see a lot of 80's influence - peplum and wide-neck knits - and finding a few more individual pieces that look interesting. The long silk skirt, the orange skirt with metalic print, the cropped lace jacket, the pink thin sweatshirt (although this looks tissue-weight and I have enough holey tissue tees TYVM!). Also like the windowpane and glen-plaid jacket fabrics, not so sure about the style.
I'll never go for sweats or yoga as out-and-about casual wear or the sloppy mess look that seems to carry on into spring. Sequins and studs are so over, they have been done to death absolutely everywhere and I find that orange lipstick garish and unappealing.
JMHO of course!
CCS, ha! I was just thinking the same thing about the eyebrows.
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the windowpane trench and the denim Langford high heel oxfords, but that's about it. Those wide-leg trousers look like the Watson pants from two falls ago, but higher waisted. IMO a lot of these looks could be recreated from previous season items.
Although I think I might have to attempt the non-brushed hair one time just for laughs and see how long it takes for coworkers to say something for me!
CCS, I noticed that too! It's also apparent on the jcrew.com home page, the first thing I noticed when initially viewing it. They went a little overboard IMO. I believe that is another 80's look.
ReplyDeleteI'm really pumped to see it all irl! It's always hard for me to determine if I will love something or not online even with clothes on the website. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteMarissa Webb looks "effortfully chic"! And starving! It looks like she got a blast of collagen in the lips.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few things I like -- it's nice to see some knee-length skirts! But what's with the long skirts pooling on the floor on 6' models? Where do you wear that? Weddings? Bars? Pick up guys by asking if they enjoy standing on your skirt?
I'm not sure that Webb is the best influence on the designs. . . but it's hard to know from out here.
Style.com has posts of each of the individual looks.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/S2011RTW-JCREW
I think some spring...
I'm going to need to get myself a silver sequinced maxi skirt.
fidele, ITA, looks like she is on a diet of ice cubes and lettuce. I think being around JC models all the time must warp one's sense of healthy body weight.
ReplyDeleteCCS, thanks for the links with the close ups. Those mesh shoes are really unattractive.
Some interesting shoes; the baseball caps and walk-of-shame personal grooming are turn-offs; and I'll decide about the clothes when I see (1) how they look on Moi, and (2) the prices. Otherwise I just have the general impression that Jil Sander has nothing to worr about.
ReplyDeletecom'on guys, re models hair and styling, this is a fashion show, you cannot seriously expect a bunch of Emma Pillsbury types in pencil skirts, cardis and perfect hair on the runway. Didn't we all ask for color? There is green, pink, red, orange, blue, yellow and neutrals. The striped sweater looks like old J Crew to me. There is less piled on tacky jewerly, there are longer skirts, there is messy and blingy but also clean lines, like the white suit and khaki combo with wide leg pants. I wish they would drop the socks with heels but the shoes look great. Personally, I may be closer to Emma P in style but I look to more edgy stuff for inspiration. When I recreate I rather tone down than try to glam up insipid looks. Now, the quality and prices are another issue...
ReplyDeleteGuys - whatever you think of the clothes, can we please stop with the weight discussion. I have a personal in and I can say that Marissa definitely eats well - and is definitely not influenced by "being around models". Her passion is simply the art of designing clothes.
ReplyDeleteWe just all have different body types and it's as simple as that.
As fellow girls, I would hope that we could respect one another and move beyond dissing each others weight. I know it's easy to post something on a blog – it feels so removed - and not think about how it could hurt someone, but it can. So, please, let’s stop discussing the personal and focus on the clothes!
Now that I've looked at the pics on Style.com I see more that I like. The jacket in look #18 is really cute and looks to be the same one Jenna wore to the preview, but in a different color. I like the shirt and skirt in look #19, the shirt and blazer in look #23, and the entire look of outfit #25 with the long sequin skirt...too bad I don't have any place to wear it.
ReplyDeleteAs for more sequins, I'm glad to see they're still going to be around come spring so I can get plenty of use out of all the sequin pieces I already own. :)
i personally really like the spring collection. think it looks cleaner and crisp - the colors are back and i love!
ReplyDeletei agree comments on marissa's "weight" really isn't relevant. like the way she's wearing the same white jacket as the first look but with a pair of jeans. i could see myself in that.
Now that I've been able to see the outfits individually (thanks all for posting those links), there are some pieces that I like. I like one of the pairs of sandals, the window-pane jacket and the blue plaid (?) jacket, the knee-length khaki skirt, and the chambray shirt. I am also glad that sequins aren't totally gone, so that I can still wear my pieces (as Fabulous Floriday Mommy already stated). I'll eagerly await seeing these pieces (hopefully closer to spring).
ReplyDeleteThanks FFM for sharing the style.com link. Like Mathteacher, I am mostly pleased with what I see. Some good basic pieces and nice pops of colours. Think I'll be OK if they offer skirts in different shapes, longer lengths, and trousers. TROUSERS in all the fashion colours that you offer in the cropped/skinny versions PLEASE. I feel a pair of pink/lavender pants in my near future.
ReplyDeleteI must be getting pretty good at "ignoring" the over/under-stylings of JC of late. I'm sure we're all grown up enough to tuck our shirts in, wear a belt, comb our hair etc. We don't have to copy verbatim what we see on the runways or catalog pages. I for one am giving up on ever seeing the slick/clean styling of the past catalogs. That said, show me the fall lookbook again and I'll still make fun of all that hay stuck in the pockets and hair.
how does that old saying go......"if you dont have anything nice to say then shut the hell up!"......i think its something like that
ReplyDeleteand oh as for the some nice things ..the show looked great.- it was so happy and optimistic!- bright colours, clean styling, tons of special pieces you wont find everywhere
love it or hate it people its called a show!!!- its there to challenge, to inspire, to excite , to lift you out of the mundane, the everyday -its not suppose to put you to sleep
wow!!!! fidele and cass thanks for those insightful comments you posted about marissa webb....well let me see...when was the last time i saw a skinny asian girl...hmmmm...30 seconds ago and before that ...another 30 seconds and before that.. i think it was another 30 seconds... Guess what!?!? there are whole lot of skinny asian girls out there in the world .... and well the last time i saw a pic of ms webb she looked asian to me. ...and im pretty sure it has something to do with something called genetics. Not all skinny people have eating disorders the same way that not all people have comments worth leaving.
ReplyDeletewhy so catty? why so negative?
what happened to being nice
how does that old saying go......"if you dont have anything nice to say then shut the hell up!"......i think its something like that
I have to say that despite some of the horrendous styling (bad hair, baseball caps, ridiculous long johns with sequins, AGAIN), there are some beautiful clothes here.
ReplyDeleteI think the green paisley pattern will be a hit, although I hope that it will come in a pencil skirt too, not just the short shorts. The pink silk trousers are gorgeous, as are the ikat patterns. Again, I hope there will be longer skirt lengths.
But personally, I think the short hemlines are motivated by the company's earnings. Shorter skirts cost less to make because of less fabric. Every little bit (lining, even the fold under the waistband of a pencil skirt) counts. There's a reason that J Crew offers so many 'open' sweaters without fastenings. A friend works in manufacturing (mall brands that many of you know), based in Hong Kong, and she says they are trying to make clothes for $3 instead of $4, so there goes pockets, buttons, whatever that makes an item more 'expensive' to produce. Seriously, what are Chinese laborers earning in order to provide retailers and consumers these disposable clothes? So I would hold off against blaming the designers so much for some of their design choices; often these choices are driven by pressures from accountants and board members. The people who should take blame for serving the shareholders instead of the customer are the bosses: Mickey, and now Jenna.
Micah, everyone here knows the styling is supposed to get attention, even if it is negative because it gets people discussing and discussing we are.
ReplyDeletehow does that old saying go......"there's no such thing as bad pubicity!"......i think its something like that
On the home page of this blog Alexis clearly states that this is "A place to discuss all aspects of J.Crew". That includes aspects people do not like and even complaints, which can be extremely helpful for those of us buying online without ever seeing IRL.
This blog belongs to Alexis and she sets the guidelines and they seem to work very well for a multitude of followers.
No go for me, I'm sorry to say, although perhaps there will be other pieces that materialize that are more my taste and style.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of Marisa Webb, let me say this: I find her style and person much less relatable (if that is a word) than Jenna's. That may be a sign of my age and state in life, and good for JCrew if they have success going in the current direction, but they will probably lose me as a customer if they continue to deviate so greatly from classics (and quality) with a twist. It seems to me like it is becoming a higher priced H&M??? Maybe I'm wrong, but in any case these pieces do not translate into my lifestyle, I'm happy for those who find things they like and are enthusiastic. After a few years of heavy buying, perhaps it's time for a break anyway. Le sigh.
lets all keep in mind that this is a fashion show. Prob not going to show the classic styles but the newest ideas. im holding judgment until i see the complete spring line.
ReplyDeleteas far as marissa and jenna go, from what ive seen, i like both their styles which arent that different, but it could be an age thing also. im 29 and probably closer to ms webbs age. looking forward to seeing whats to come.
also interesting to know that ms webb has been with jcrew for over 9 years i think. i had a chance to talk to her briefly at one of the events a while back. so its not like shes new to jcrew and running wild. im assuming jenna has a lot to do with the styling still.
ReplyDeletewell.. those that really know know. ms webb seems to be the scape goat. the pres of the company is pushing the brands direction and responsible for the past seasons over styling. ms. webb if you out there...we have met before and you have always blown me away with your style and grace.
ReplyDeleteJCrew 2011 Men's Spring Collection is on GQ too:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-eye/2010/11/sneak-preview-j-crew-spring-2011.html
You know, I LOVE all the sequins and shiny fabrics, but they are so unrealistic for everyday, especially if you're a mom and work from home. I love the neutrals, but they have to be worn right not to be boring.
ReplyDeleteHi guys! I am catching up with all the comments so I am may be a bit out of the loop. However, I feel some of the comments needed to be addressed...
ReplyDeleteFirst, what makes this blog so great is our varying perspectives. We all have different takes. No need to take things defensively if someone disagrees with us. Some of us like sequins, some of us don't. Some of us like tweed, some of us don't. Just look at the bright side when someone doesn't like what you like: it just means more in the sale section for you! ;) But back to being serious, we can share our likes or dislikes without being mean. And in the end, we might change our minds based on reading those differences.
Second, there is no need for personal attacks (on anyone). It unintentionally takes down the entire tone of this blog to a negative place. Either ignore the person, ask for clarification (as a lot of times it comes from misunderstanding), or calmly explain your position (which again, can clear up any misunderstanding). This blog's main benefit is the super helpful community. Let's work to keep it that way. :)
P.S. NYC12345 you made some good points! :)
cheers alexis :)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the cream top with stripes of gold stones IRL. I could not pull it off with the silk ruffle shorts it's shown with but I have a feeling I could work it well in the context of my current wardrobe. Nothing else is jumping out at me quite yet but I am excited to see the entire collection in stores. Big fan of the neutral palette :)
