Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. I stopped in a J Crew store yesterday -- sign in front of store saying 40% off sale but back on the actual sale racks it said 50% off so at least they matched the online pomo. Didn't see anything I wanted - was temped by some different colors in the long sleeve perfect tees (30% off regular price) but sizes were super limited again. I liked the Sammie chino (hadn't seen them IRL yet) nice fabric but no way am I buying any more cropped pants right now. Why not a nice, all cotton, modern fitting full length women's chino J Crew? One of those things they used to do so well.

    1. @Julie- totally agree in regards to full length pants. I don't need my ankles/ leg exposed in the dead of winter. The same with all the bracelet length sleeves on sweaters. It seems like we keep complaining about these things yet nothing changes. Maybe if J Crew starting listen to us they would have better results. The Sammie chinos are now $15 and although cute definitely not a winter pant and not a flattering cut for the masses. I will be making some returns today and hope to find a sale gem or two and not get the side eye about all my returns.

    2. I only discovered Sammies late in the game (e.g., October), and after buying one pair to test drive before the weather got too cold, bought 2 more when the price dropped. I'll be waiting a long time to wear them, but figured for $20 CAD it was worth it. It was funny how quickly they dropped the price on the Sammies, but meanwhile other items have been languishing at the same price since June (e.g., a lot of the gingham pieces). I won't be going to the store again for some time, I'm shopped out and literally have nowhere to put everything.

    3. @Jess yes they have been ignoring our gripes about too many cropped pants in winter since the beginning of this blog--about 8 years now?

  2. I used my gift cards online and received shipping notification from orders placed during the website hack issue, so hooray for that. Went to my store earlier in the week and didn't see much in Sale that wasn't XXXS or a languishing design mistake, so I don't think I'll go this weekend.

This is my Shopping Ban season and I start Monday. My closet is bursting and I hate seeing all the NWT. Money wasted, even on the stuff I like but never wear.

I've been loving the "old school" outfits on all the JCA IGs. Fabulous! What great inspiration for shopping the closet as I have so many of those pieces as I'm sure is true for most JCAs. I was inspired to get out my Tiger Eye Stone Bead Necklace today - looks fab w camel cashmere. Anybody remember those necklaces?

    1. Ruffles, maybe I will try that also as this is the slow time for J.Crew roll outs and that should help. My closet is bursting as well and I also have NWT stuff that I wish I hadn't bought even from last year and the year before. I made myself look through and wear a sweater yesterday that I had never worn but I hated it and it pilled like crazy. So frustrating.

    2. Hi Ruffles and DD - I've always loved January at JC because their catalogs (when they were making them) were super-thin and filled with not too much new stuff, but good ideas for pieces that most JCA's probably have. Perhaps I'll put some old January catalogs up on my Insta next week for inspiration.

I'd also encourage anybody that wants to do a closet clean out to put their stuff on eBay/Poshmark or the JCA exchange. One thing that I've always liked about JC is that it has good resale value, especially if you've got NWT items.

    3. Canadians can't use Poshmark. our shipping from Ebay is $$. I would love to see alot more listed on this JCA exchange. I don't know how we would do the exchange rate...but I am sure we could figure it out. My Closet clean outs have been epic to say the least...I have been wearing a J Crew cashmere weater dress (poppy) that I purchased about four years ago (after xmas sale) as a warm cozy piece
over PJ's ....fancy housecoat. never worn it out of the house.

    4. @unknown I think if you pay via PayPal it will do the conversion for you. I may be wrong.

    5. Fantastic....I do hope JCA's consider this site before Poshmark or Ebay.

      Delete
    6. I love the JCA exchange, but it seems like there are fewer people reading it. Plus, on days where there are loads of entries, a fair number repeat the items listed on eBay, which can get quite lengthy to read. I worry that people just switch away before getting to items that might be listed just on the JCA page. Thoughts? Maqsad

    7. I haven't been listing as much on the exchange--I wonder if maybe we could find a way to organize by sizes it might be better? Like separate threads for sizes 000-6 and 8-16, plus a third thread for shoes and accessories? Also I think not being able to post pics dampens the enthusiasm.

    8. Great ideas, Cass! I agree, I think pictures help! I've made an insta profile for some of my closet cleanout items to try and overcome this.

    9. Unknown - you hit the nail in the head (at least for me), I see the long ebay listings and my eyes glaze over, to the point I end up not reading past.

    10. I always read the Looking to Sell page, and as a CDN, I really appreciate any JCAs willing to ship to Canada! As already noted, we can't use Poshmark, and eBay's Global Shipping Program added big costs for Canadian shoppers. I used to buy a lot from eBay, but stopped when the GSP started. Now I only look to eBay 2-3 times a year when I'll be in the US to receive packages there.

      Delete
    11. Shopgirl, is the GSP a bad thing?

    12. DD, pilling on a new sweater is the worst! One of my top reasons for buyers remorse!

Silver_Lining, I love your catalog posts on Insta! Do let us know if you get around to it in the coming weeks ... I will be on my Ban and living - and shopping - vicariously for a while :)

The JCA Exchange is awesome and I used to buy/sell lots from other JCAs in the past. Would love to see more active JCAs - I try to avoid the professionals, if you know what I mean!

      Delete
    13. @maqsad I think there are some benefits to the GSP (e.g., tracking info), but the downside for CDN buyers is that duty and tax get added to every item. So if I'm buying a $21 sweater, I pay $10+ in shipping, and another $10 in duty and taxes. While technically CDNs are supposed to pay duty and taxes on any postal imports over $20 (which is in itself archaic), the reality is, it is rarely collected for small purchases (in my experience, under $90). In over a decade of making eBay purchases, I was never once charged duty and taxes (it's up to Canada Post to collect them based on the item's declared value, but it's probably not cost effective for them to do it for every small package coming across the border), whereas with the GSP, they automatically charge them. It adds another 30% to the cost of any item, on top of shipping, making those 2nd hand bargains much less of a bargain.

      Delete
    14. not to mention the fact
our dollar (Can) is low. we can be paying $$$ for item that US ebay purchasers would be. Its just way too expensive...

    15. I'm intimidated by ebay (lol) but have never tried to sell here. That will be my New Year's resolution! I've done a big closet clean out and have a lot of NWTs to sell :) -lep33shops (on IG)

    16. I mostly use eBay to sell and occasionally Poshmark. I've posted sporadically here but will try to get back in the habit of posting more regularly. I'd be happy to ship to Canada - I didn't realize the GSP put Canadians at a disadvantage as far as shipping goes. I agree that the posts can sometimes be a lot to wade through without photos.

    17. Shopgrrrl thanks for the explanation on GSP. What a bummer! Like Anne, I'm happy to ship to Canada and send the items with tracking info independently. My IG is maqsadcloset for sale stuff (sartorialchoices for reviews). I'm going to try listing more regularly on the exchange too. Always happy to send photos and more details over email.

  3. I am supposed to get my colorblock suede heels today and I so hope they fit. I will report back. My local store is pretty bare but I may go by at lunch to check for any returned gems. I did get the black suede flats yesterday with the gold laces and I must say they are so comfy, cute and TTS. I don't think they scream holiday as much as I thought. I am wearing them today with the oxford check double breasted coat some jeans, leopard calf hair belt and liberty shirt. I love the coat as well, TTS. I had never tried it on in store as I knew I would never buy it at full price but with sale and discounts and gift cards, glad I got it.

  4. The coats that I would like to try are 50% off....but final sale. I don't know if a 10 or 12 would work better. so much for final sale on some items J Crew. I did get to try on the oxford check coat instore...I liked the 12/ I am a 10 in the cocoon and pea coats.Just incase someone else is in the same boat.

  5. Oh, JCAs! I forgot to share a few weeks ago (irrelevant to this post but it tickled me at the time & is J Crew-related) - I was watching Watch What Happens Live on Bravo & Anderson Cooper was a guest. Andy Cohen commented on his tee & Anderson said, "J CREW CLEARANCE 40% OFF RACK!" He also said something about "If it's not at J Crew, I don't need it."

Stars, they're just like us. (Bonus: my husband has the same tee. Bought on clearance @ 40% off.)

1/1-3/31 - reward card is issued in May
4/1-6/30 - reward card is issued in August
7/1-9/30 - reward card is issued in November
10/1-12/31 - reward card is issued in February

So looks like next card should be sent out in February. HTH

  7. Will go to make a few online returns. Was able to find Sadie pom pom tartan flats in a store (had SA do a company wide search) and ordered them, yeah! TX stores are doing 40% off 1 sale item and 50% off 2 or more. Must be a lot of sale inventory to get rid of with this "buy more" promo.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I stopped in yesterday with a few returns - I still had my festive plaid shirt in the size that didn't work and I tried the grey pullover sweater with snaps that I thought looked so cute on other ladies on IG but it was sadly too short on me.

My store had the 40% off sale and 30% off other full price items. The store looked pretty typical for the post holiday rush but I did find a few items - the dark green Excursion vest, hunter green Tippi (my old Factory one was lost to moths), striped tee with tulle sleeves and the tweed/lace shell. They were handing out the $20 off $100 bounce back cards in store so between my two returns, the sale and (politely) asking that the 40% be applied on the promo price for the vest, I spent about $25.

I, too, will be trying to shop my closet in January! I've been slowly weeding through my closet and listing on eBay. Hoping to get through a little more this weekend.

  10. Made my return and left with the argyle and houndstooth tippis and lace and fringe tank. My store was overflowing with sale items. There was an extra big sale section and then more sale items were still interspersed throughout the store. No side eye as everyone was returning. I found a lot to try on but talked myself out of a lot of things. As others mentioned still have too much with tags yet. Also tried the I need 3 things in my closet this will go with game or not buying. Also anything that screamed holiday was not purchased either. I have enough and the time to wear is so limited. I will be getting a few more packages in the next few days and more than likely will be making another return soon.

  12. A few days ago, I bought something I had not seen before from the J Crew sale section: Schoolboy eyelet blazer (style 37960, color smoky). After promo code it was $44 Canadian - basically less than the regular price of a t-shirt. I knew it was old, because in a year plus of regularly looking at JCrew's website, I had never seen it before. I had no idea now old. I received it today and can now see that the tag indicates SP 11. The blazer, which I bought in Dec 2016, is almost 6 years old. My mind is reeling as I ask myself how is this possible? Did they take back a return 6 years after the purchase? Did they find it stuffed into a drawer at the warehouse 6 years later? Sadly, I will never know the fully story.

It's cheap but I have way too much stuff and am trying (not very successfully) to be more discriminating and am undecided as to whether to keep or return (astoundingly it was not a final sale).

In the same order, I also purchased a 1035 two button blazer (style 27688 color light heather) with a tag that indicates SU 13. This blazer was also cheap - even a few dollars cheaper than the first blazer. I would have been astounded by the fact that this blazer is 3 1/2 year old but it seems fresh off the production line compared to the other one.

I have two questions I would like to throw out for thoughts/feedback:
    1) I think the blazer looks dated - but perhaps that's only because I know it is from SP 11 (maybe I would not think the blazer looks dated if the tag had said SP 15). Any thoughts from others as to the "datedness" or not of this item

    2) I am now curious - what is the oldest item you purchased on "pop back" (i.e. compared to when you were purchasing it). Anything older than this almost 6 year old blazer?

    Thanks for your thoughts

    1. @TorontoModern, wow, that is quite old! It might be a good thing as quality could be better on some older items. :)
This Christmas I purchased my husband some different items and was surprised that a shirt had a fall14 tag, another was HO15 and spring15 which aren't that old but they were from stores so I was wondering where they were hanging around. None were sale items, all full price (with a promo). Maybe they'd been in the back room.

    2. I forgot to mention that I saw a few random jcrew retail 2014 items (scarfs, Aggie ankle boots, other boots) at a factory store when I was visiting in the US last month. They said they were found at the warehouse and shipped to factory stores.

    3. I bought a two button ludlow blazer in black recently and it's from 2014 I think. At first I wasn't sure but it's classic, doesn't have gold buttons, can be worn year round and is a little longer than many of the others. The details are nicely done, so I kept it.

    4. wow...this is so strange. I never saw the blazer you purchased online...so can't comment on keeping it or not...but I only hope more pop backs occur that i can get my hands on.

    5. what colour is 'SMOKEY" ? greenish brown ?

      Delete
    6. Hi. Thanks for the feedback. In response to the question about the color, the "smoky" translates into (at least to my eyes) a light khaki/taupe. Someone has a listing on eBay so you can see what the color looks like.

Looks unimpressive on the mannequin and it looks just as unimpressive on me.

I think Doodle Dachshund is right - this will be a hard jacket to put together with other items. Despite the archeological "score" I think I have to be sensible and return it and get my $40 back... Thank you.

    7. yes....return. thank goodness not final sale. $40 is $40 to put towards something you do like.

    9. Wow! We should really put our funny stories in a book or smth. Holy popbacks, Batman. Glad you're deciding to return the blazer. FWIW, I have an eyelet blazer in white that I've never worn .... they seem like a great idea, but very hard to pull off. I'd rather have a single cotton shirt in summer than feel compelled to make a blazer work.

  14. I just got my Sophia pump in Sequin. They are more holographic than they appear, but some of the sequins can be manipulated to reverse to gold, which I like. Kind of gives them an imperfect look. (In a good way.) I really like them with jeans and the faux leather pleated mini. Fit is TTS. Love the heel height. Posted pic on IG @WEARTHISLIKETHIS. 15. Two weeks ago, I wrote asking for advice on the navy Regent in (regular) wool vs the navy Regent in super 120s wool (see link below)

    http://jcrewaficionada.blogspot.ca/2016/12/seek-find-will-you-visit-jcrew-this_16.html

I got some very helpful information. For what it's worth, here are my impressions. I returned the super 120s version and decided (for now) to keep the (regular) wool (but am not going to cut those tags out and wear it for a while). The JCAs were right - the super 120s fabric is lovely, with a beautiful drape. It looked like it would resist wrinkles, and is definitely a all season fabric that could be worn all year. It definitely would be less prone to attracting lint than the regular version. With the recent 40% off purchase promo, it only cost me about $50 Cdn more than the regular version, which would have been well worth it for the upgrade in quality - and yet I returned it to keep a jacket that was not by any objective measure, as nice or "as good". I realize that taste is very personal, but there seemed to me to be a mismatch between the sophistication/fanciness of the 120s fabric and style of the Regent. The 120s version felt better on, but the (regular) wool version looked better. The (regular) wool version has a small contrasting grey stripe on the controversial pop up collar - I thought I would not like it in real life, but it actually looks better than the (no contrast) super 120s version. (But given the sophistication of the super 120s fabric, I can see that a contrasting stripe might look a little odd on that version.) The beefier fabric of the regular wool (with less drape seemed to suit the style of the jacket better

If anyone is debating between the two, I would definitely recommending ordering both if you can and seeing which you prefer.

I now have to ponder the "lint attraction" factor and decide whether to keep it or not. But the J Crew sales gods smiled on me and I found a Regent blazer in Black Watch with satin lapel F8196/F9306 online yesterday so I may have a hard decision ahead of me when it arrives.

Now I will impose on JCAs for some more advice please. What sort of skirt looks best with the Regent? Or, is it a jacket that is really meant to be worn with pants?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Regent is such a hard jacket to style. IMO, it even looks sloppy on the models. I think it probably would work best with a sleek cropped pant if you have legs for miles. I also cannot do cropped pants, so I haven't been able to buy J.Crew pants for the past five years.

I had similar problems with the hacking jackets (I'm 5-2) - I adored the fabrics and colors but couldn't make them look good with either pants or a skirt. I ended up reselling.

If I were you, if this jacket doesn't work now, just return it. No point in letting it sit in your closet while you figure out what goes for it. Eventually J.Crew will release jackets that make sense for you, and you can buy those without remorse.

A few years back, J.Crew was doing tailored shorter jackets, the ecole, the two button the aubrey. I'm short, so I snapped up a bunch of them (some from JCAs!) and I'm so glad I did.

FWIW - those jackets (velvet, tweed, and Super 120s) have held up beautifully over the years.

      Good luck.

      Delete
    2. I ordered the blackwatch one too, and can't wait to get it. The schoolboy wasn't the best for me, it fit a little boxy. I had a lot of those shorter blazers and ended up selling most. I did love the Ecole (I think, with the high ruffled neck) but got mine at factory in 2008 I think and it was a pea green velvet which wasn't a color I wore often—my favorite wear was paired with old hot pink pointy toe flats from J.crew early-mid 2000's for Easter one year. I have a hacking jacket as well and was considering selling it until I put it on recently and really loved the longer length.

      Delete
    3. I have a few of the Regent blazers - I'm 5'8" and curvy and find them to work for my figure. I like them because they work well with jeans but they also look good with pants _ tend to wear straighter ankle pants but have also worn my black/grey plaid one with the satin lapel with trousers and I liked the look. I usually reach for my schoolboy or other suiting blazers for skirts - somehow the shape is too straight for a skirt but I did wear one with a printed pencil skirt and it was ok. I was at my store the other day and one of the SAs was wearing the navy lightweight wool (with the stripe on the collar)with a pinstriped button down, lighter wash jeans and loafers. It looked really cute.

If you're on Instagram and feel like paging through my feed (@fablifeforever) - I wore a navy with white satin lapel on 10/31 with a skirt, camel Regent with pants on 10/21 and 11/16 and grey plaid with trousers on 10/28. HTH!

    4. My thanks to Flower Power, Suz Has and Anne for their thoughts. Anne - I really enjoy your instagram feed. You make the clothes look too good :-). Flower Power had some very sage advice about not hanging onto something that isn't working. Inspired by this good advice I returned a camel Regent that I got a couple of weeks ago. Yes, I am embarrassed to say that I bought one of those, too... (Camel blazers look so great on everyone else, but it made me look slightly ill.) I did not have the willpower to return the navy Regent and am hanging out to it until I get the Regent in Black Watch to compare. But I impressed myself by saying no to the lady jacket in houndstooth and the quilted lady jacket in stewart plaid in my size despite the fact they were on sale and an additional 40% off. I appreciate your time and advice.

    5. @Toronto Modern thank you so much for the sweet compliment :) Agreed that if it isn't working - return it! I think it's tough sometimes to part with things we want to love. 3. @TeriLynn if you're willing to spend a little more money, I recently tried and absolutely love the Commando tights on the recommendation of my local specialty undergarments store. They don't have a waist band but there's still material there to smooth out your midsection (sort of like yoga pants) and they are soft and extremely comfortable. They're also run resistant - if you snag them, a run won't form. Or so I'm told.

    4. Thanks! I will check those out. I spend enough time in tights that comfort is a top priority.

  17. Ugh, so the only thing I wanted this season - the super 120s pleated dress - is now back in stock in my size in a color I don't have. J.Crew dresses are so hit or miss with me - I'm short and a 32b but with a biggish butt - petites are too high waisted and with the regular I have to get an 000 (a ridiculous size BTW) which sells out fast because they make so few. I have this dress in stretch wool in a different color - love the super 120s fabric so I am so tempted.

But reviews are mixed - sounds like the pleats are going to be matronly on me (or they could be fabulous. With the discount and my rewards card return (I used my rewards card but returned part of the order and they gave me back by rewards card instead of my money). But to get free shipping, I have to add ride-ons, and if they are returned, they are going to give me my rewards card back AGAIN.

First world problems I know...but JCAs will understand....

    1. If it's not final sale I'd go for it and just pay the $5 shipping (don't bother with the ride alongs). US shipping is like a latte at Starbucks. :) The worst is feeling that regret (which for me usually ends up in stalking and paying more in the end lol).

    2. I really have to try on with J. Crew dresses, so if it's not final sale, go for it. I wouldn't worry about the rewards, I don't think that should influence what you buy. And I'd do a ride along to get free shipping as long as it's not a pain for you to do returns. Good luck.

    3. I have this dress and love it in the Super 120s. I took my regular size and it fits well. I would say that the style of pleats can be tricky if you are curvy, which it am, but typically I wear it w a cardi or jacket which hides the bit of pouf at the hips.
