Pink Lady: “I felt I had to do something in shocking pink because that’s what Schiaparelli is known for. I sketched the design for this skirt on the back of a piece of paper during a meeting one day about two weeks before the ball. Honda, our patternmaker, draped and stitched the satin right here in the office.”What are your thoughts on Jenna Lyons outfit? Do you like the pairing of satin with denim?
Shock Factor: “There’s a peplum underneath because I wanted that articulated silhouette I had seen on the pages of Schiaparelli’s Shocking Life. The bow at the waist has wire in it to hold its shape and keep it nice and stiff.”
Denim Diehard: “I didn’t want to wear duchesse silk satin with something sparkly or pearls. I am who I am—so I took it down a notch with denim. We pulled a J.Crew jean jacket and then had it fit and re-tailored to raise the waistband. I’m also not really wearing a shirt underneath—the collar and cuffs were custom-made by my custom shirtmaker and were stitched into the jacket.”

Every once in awhile, J.Crew's 770 blog offers really interesting insight into their inner workings. Their "The Making of a Met Ball Outfit" post is one of them:

Not the biggest fan of the outfit herself but it's very "her". I love the explanation of the thought process behind the outfit though - thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI like this outfit on her and laughed at the line "I am who I am."
ReplyDeleteNo. It not the least bit flattering - on her or anyone else.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of sewing cuffs and a collar onto a denim jacket is rather cool IMO. I've seen it done with button-on pieces on a sweater but never a jean jacket. You would have to keep it buttoned but I'd wear something like that.
ReplyDeleteWondering why did she take a coworker and not her gal pal to the event. None of my business of course, just wondering aloud.
That's Jenna. I loved her hair for this event. My only wish is that she would visit Nordstrom for a bra fitting. It would bump up her outfits. Literally.
ReplyDeleteYes, please, a little support would be uplifting.
DeleteWFF, you are a crackup.
DeleteFinally - she goes out without her hideous glasses! She looks sooo much better. I love the bright skirt. Outfit is very Jenna.
ReplyDeleteI have another photo of Jenna from this event that I shared in this post a couple months ago. Even though I'm not a fan of her outfit combo, I do think that Jenna herself looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI am just envious that she has a custom shirt maker:)
ReplyDeleteI do like it -- on her. I would never wear it in a million years though, lol. And if I did, the skirt would have to be cut down to be a mini and I wouldn't wear the jacket as a shirt, but left as a jacket and thown on over a white or black tank. But I'm boring, and that's why I don't have her job, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI also like that she thoughtfully chose the bright pink as a nod to Schiaparelli.
Call me a traditionalist (or just old, or lame), but I think denim is too casual a fabric for the Met Ball. She says "I'm me" as a way to explain her non-satin fabric choice, but did she have to go with the other extreme?
ReplyDeleteI"m not that impresssed. I understand her nod to Schiaparelli pink but she would be turning over in her elegant grace if she saw this paired with denim as trying to pass off as a ball gown. Call me old school but there is a time and place for a certain amount of sartorial respect and the Met Ball is one of them, Besides, she has anything at her disposal- why go to such lenghts? She has the bearing and stature for almost anything but this is a definite miss. At least she left her costumey glasses at home. THey have been around too long- I see them on middle school girls now- time for a new trend!!
ReplyDeletethis is very her - it is true to her style. if she had switched to another dressier blouse i think it would have been perfect for the occasion.
ReplyDeleteThis outfit made several worst lists and I agree. I like her style during "less-formal" events but she seems to always miss the mark at the Met balls. Last year her sweater and long skirt ensemble was shapeless and boring. This year she tried a more structured look but the outfit is ill-fitting. A close look of her outfit shows the jacket is too tight & almost gapping while the skirt made her hips look wide. I would never have guessed this was custom-made at all because of the bad fit.
ReplyDeleteI love it and would wear it everywhere (like I do all my clothes)
ReplyDeletePersonally, I love it. Love her nod to Schiaparelli pink, love the fit of the skirt on her. The interior peplum gives her more of a figure, instead of being straight up and down.
ReplyDeleteI love that she is always wearing a JCrew piece, even if it was highly retailored. Love that she left the glasses at home, her hair and makeup are fab, she looks gorgeous.
