It's that time again, to take a look at an image of J.Crew pieces from seasons past! As caribbelle (in this post) so beautifully termed, "ye olde j crew of yore".
I want to say this image came out in Spring 2008. Although the outfits are kind of boring, there is something quite lovely about this image. Maybe its because the photo looks like it captured two girlfriends sharing drinks and fond memories together. In any case, I love it!
What are your thoughts on the look(s)/item(s) from the past? Do you find the look(s)/item(s) classic or do you think they are dated?
I remember that issue, and agree that the sentiment of the photo is nice. Always liked the model on the right -- she has a great, friendly grin, and appeared quite a bit in older J.Crew catalogues and my favourite issue of all time: October 2005 (England theme).
ReplyDeleteI much prefer the images such as this one over those in the current catalogs. Everyone seemed much happier and looked like they actually enjoyed wearing the clothes. Everything about the older catalogs made the clothing much more appealing, IMO.
ReplyDeleteMaybe boring, but I think classic - I would wear either one of those outfits right now. Can't say the same for most of the outfits in the '10 and '11 catalogs...or especially the August '12 one. I was noticing last night that there is not a single outfit from there that I would wear as-is, but I copied directly from older catalogs often.
ReplyDeletelong-time follower here, but seldom post. I definitely agree with both FFM and silver lining - both outfits I find classic and I would totally wear. These outfits fit into my lifestyle perfectly, much better than the images/styling I see in the August 12 catalog. The models look so much happier, as opposed to just looking like they rolled out of bed, late for work!
ReplyDeleteYes, it looks boring but I still dress like that alot in the summer. :) A tee with ripstop cargos is so easy & not frumpy.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why they've skipped rolling out the ripstop pants for the past two summers? Since I have a bunch of them from past years I'm all set, but they are an item I still look for in new rollouts.
I love the gorgeous, yet intelligent looking confident girl who needs no make up and is sharing a great time on summer break from college at a unique beach wearing J Crew.
ReplyDeleteI don't feel like J Crew can completely go back and sell this image again as their customer base has broadened from the understated preppy look that kept me a loyal customer for 20+ years( don't forget the dependable quality they were known for) to a more trendy, high fashion look (with clothes made to last one season). Style wise, Fall 2011 to the present has returned to their "roots" (and happier looking models too), now lets see the quality improve for fall 2012 as well and I'll gladly return spending the bulk of my clothing budget at J Crew again.
If wearing a cardigan with a casual skirt or capri pants is wrong, I don't want to be right, because this is basically how I dress all summer.
ReplyDeleteI love that photo- it represents the true core of JCrew. THe message is " You can always look put together, stylish, and comfortable, even in a very relaxed moment"- much like how most of us live their daily lives. These are clothes, color coordinated, well fitted, caual but certainly not frumpy ,that any of us wear to the grocery store, running around town, catching coffee with a friend. So many of the new clothes are pretty to look at but I need the lifestyle that goes along with it. I spend more time in clothes like these rather than silk capris, "sky high heels", and 3 layers of blouses, sweaters and blazers.
ReplyDeleteThe pendulum has swung too far and I hope JCrew can find the happy medium. THere are a few glimmers of hope in the new catalog... I have been with JCrew longer than Mickey Drexler. I still have a beautiful, black velvet top from on eof the 1st catalogs! I am not giving up yet...it has always been my favorite store and even though I suffer regular disappoinment, I usually don't walk out of a store empty handed. Sad to say most of the staff in all 3 local stores know me by name and face!!
CLASSIC! I used to love their cargos and also wonder why they have stopped making them. I was wearing a pair today from probably 2003 or so and the dog ripped them a little...I panicked because I need to get them fixed since I can't get a new pair. Cargo pants are classics and they should always be available!
ReplyDeleteThose cargo pants were my favorites! I had several pairs and wore them to shreds. I'd buy another pair in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteWell, I had this cargo skirt and loved. I love this whole look and the catalog. It's really what real JCREW followers look like (IMO). Not the girls all messy in the catalogs of today (past 2 years). Frankly, I wish they would go back to this simple but beautiful and real way of doing catalogs. That's why I started shopping JCREW in the day...simple and real. Also, I found a JUNE 2005 catalog in my basement today. I will scan and post on my blog (vivalabeagle.blogspot.com) in the next few days... you will crush on how wonderful the images are and the COLORS...oh the colors were to die for and it makes today's looks and colors pretty boring.
ReplyDeleteI too really miss the old J Crew. The current look feels so artificial and unwearable. I loved the days when I would get the catalog and recreate an entire outfit, piece by piece. Now, I can barely put two J Crew pieces together without feeling like a crazy hipster. I am a reformed J Crew a-holic because of Mickey and Jenna's awful vision.
