"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. SUNNY promo extended through April 11. Still no free ship :(

  2. I'm bummed about the lack of free shipping with the SUNNY promo code. I mean, you spend over $150 and NO free shipping???

  3. I agree with no free ship on the SUNNY promo. I have some things in my cart but won't bite with a discount that basically cancels out shipping.

  4. No free shipping for those who can't make it to a store. *sigh*

  5. I made my first return by mail for a factory item. I sent the package with tracking number and they received it two weeks ago. Only yesterday they sent me an email to acknoweledge the receipt and to let me know that the refund would me made in the form of a gift card because the item was returned after 60 days from purchase (which isn't true had they processed the return in time). In this case I am ok with a gift card because it was a small purchase but otherwise I would have been upset, especially since the email was sent at the same time than the gift card shipping notification, so there was nothing that I could have done. Does this happen often with returns by mail?

  6. Ema - I'm in MD and my factory & non-factory items are proceseed within days! For future reference, if you return using UPS & you have your tracking #, you can check on UPS' site to see when your return was received at the warehouse, and use this info to challenge them about the return date.

Ditto how everyone else feels about this promo. If it at least included free ship, I'd be more inclined to try a handbag or something. Maybe that's it. This promo is designed to attract those who 'love' or 'have to have' something, This is the time they should've named it 'MUSTHAVE' because they're the only shoppers who would be using the promo! :P

  7. Ema,

I return through the mail a lot and it is always processeed within 3-5 business days. The most I ever waited was two weeks and that was one rare occassion.

  8. Ema,

I recently sent a package back by UPS from NJ on 3/25. It was signed for @ JCrew on 3/29, but my return was not processed until yesterday 4/5. I received an email telling me that I will be getting a gift card for one item since it was supposedly purchased over 60 days ago (not true). But, I had used a gift card to purchase the item, so it makes sense that I'd receive one back.

If they received/signed for your package 2 weeks ago, I'd definitely call/email to complain about the gift card.

  9. I'm still waiting on a return by UPS and my dh recycled my tracking #! Any recourse here?

  10. No free ship = no sunny sale for me!

  11. Ema- my recent mail return to factory also took a long time to process. They received the box last week (according to tracking) but I just received the email notification of it being processed - so that took one week from them getting the box. My debit card hasn't been refunded yet.

This is not typical of my past experiences with JCrew returns however. My last return I mailed back on a Monday and it was processed and refunded that Thursday. So sometimes they are really fast! But this recent factory return has been unusually long I must say.

  12. IRL, Genny and Pathos, thanks for the input. Maybe the next time I will use the pre-paid UPS label (I used USPS). Or will stop buying factory altogether, since it is really a hassle for me that I can't return in store (BTW, the SA was willing to try, but it didn't come up on their computer, apparently it's a different system).

JCK, I sent mine on the 19th and they received it on the 25th but they only processed it yesterday. It makes sense that they refunded you on a gift card if you used a gift card. In my case I used my Amex (one of those rare times, normally I have enough in gift cards).

  13. Glad you posted that Ema - I shipped mine on the 18th and still haven't received any info. I had a factory dress and a retail skirt. Lesson to me not to forgot to put up paper slips lest my hubby gets to it first.

  15. I'm in California and my received my refund (from Factory) a few days after it was received.

  16. Ema,

Yes, I have used both the UPS and USPS labels but I use the UPS ones more. I have had good results with both but the USPS ones may take a day longer to get to JCrew.

  17. Well it finally happened to me . . .holes in my knit tops! Boo!! I wore my perfect-fit mixed-tape cardigan in black once and washed it. I pulled it out wear again on Sunday and it has a hole up by the shoulder seam. Luckily it is small, and I can fix it without it being too obvious since it is black, but I'm annoyed. I fear this trend is going to continue.

Also, I received the ripple stripe pencil skirt in orange that I bought with the extra 30% off promo yesterday. Big disappointment. It is unflattering and seems to sit really high as opposed to all my other JC pencil skirts. SO happy it wasn't final sale and I can return it!

  18. CCS, so sad to hear that your mixed-tape cardi has a hole. I've been pretty hard on all of mine and they have held up well. I will start washing them on delicate now, just in case.

  19. I'll take care of my mixed tapes too. They seemed so sturdy.

  20. Make sure to examine your checkout page when you are online shopping, because the price of an item may increase between the time you put it in your cart and when you check out. This happened to me when a pair of pixie pants on sale jumped $20. I didn't notice and paid for them, and had *a heck of a time* trying to get my money back. I was completely stonewalled by customer service, who resolutely insisted to me that the pants had never been the price that I claimed (ergo I must be crazy?). It wasn't until I retrieved an image from Google's cache -- and emailed it to J Crew -- that they reluctantly refunded my money, with no word of apology for insulting my intelligence or wasting my time. Shady!!

  21. Ugh! What does JC have against free shipping for solid orders over $100 for grown-ups? I don't understand why the crewcuts site always has free shipping on everything (although I'm glad for it- just bought my flower girls very cute dresses!)...I would have bought something for myself, too, if there had been free shipping for me!

  22. I can't believe it, but my worst fear came true. There was a bug in today's J Crew box. The box had been taped more than usual. I'm not suggesting someone put the bug in the box. It's just that it was taped so well that I believe the bug did take a ride all the way from the warehouse. It crawled back to the bottom of the box. I looked to see if it came out on the other side and, therefore, possibly from my house, but I never saw it. Just took the box outside.

  23. Ugh, a bug! Expecting a package today from J Crew; looks like I'll be opening my stuff out in the garage from now on. Thanks for the warning, Gigi. I HATE bugs.

  24. Can someone please explain to me why the 100% cotton Crewcuts scarf for my daughter says: DRY CLEAN ONLY on the tag???

I mean DRY CLEAN means you can wash it but for best results to dry clean.

    DRY CLEAN ONLY???? why?

  25. Ugh, when did JCrew change their return policy by mail? Why do I now need to pay $5.95 when I return an item by mail? Bad enough that I can't get my shipping refunded but this is ridiculous. I am very unpleased by these new policies.

  26. Today I went into J.Crew to pick out an outfit for my meeting I have tomorrow with a future employer. I was not greeted upon entry of the store while women after me were. I was passed by at LEAST five times while carrying a huge pile of clothes to try on and was not asked to start a dressing room. Other women in the store were asked at least ten minutes before I was finally asked when an employee noticed I was struggling to carry all of my things. Maybe it is because I am young (22 years old) or maybe because I was wearing my work out clothes (I had just gotten into town from a 5 hour car ride) but goodness, when I worked in retail I made it a point to speak to EVERYONE..

  27. Jody,

Not sure what you mean but that policy has been in effect for years now....????

  28. I ordered two radiette camis: one in mauve morning and the other in ivory linen. The mauve morning one was full of snags in the silk, and the ivory linen one was actually olive tree instead! I returned both of them and received the replacement mauve morning tank, which still has snags, but not as many as the first one. I'll probably receive the ivory linen one tomorrow. I hope it's snag free & the right color! And, after all this hassle, you'd think they'd offer me some kind of compensation, but they've offered me nothing.

  29. Jenm,

So sorry that happened to you. Experiences like that have limited my JCrew purchases. I had too many. Old Navy had an item out of stock and gave me 10% off my next order. JCRew--nothing.

Also, I got a defective item from Old Navy; the rep immediately apoligized and gave me an additional 10% off my already 10% without me saying ANYTHING!
