J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  3. Well I got my first shipment today...and I need some help. My review is of the Merino confetti stripe sweater-dress. This dress fits TTS and is super comfortable. The big problem is its see-through. What should I do? A slip...Super high tights? UH...I really like the dress, but I need help fellow JCA's. Thanks in advance!

  4. ina - Pic(s) of the stripe boatneck sweater on Ema

Stene - I vote for a slip. Sounds like the waist band of the tights might show thru the dress.

  5. Gigiofca - Thanks! I agree with that one...guess I should go out and buy a slip. I just love the dress so much I want it to work!

  6. Pier-stripe sweatshirt (42490) - Thick, almost canvasy material. Cute, and fit exactly in my regular size S. It has no give so if you wanted to wear it over a shirt like the model you'd probably have to size up. I got the navy, and the contrasting stripes are like a light tan - they looked more white on my computer monitor, and I'll be returning for that reason.

  7. I'm a huge fan of slips, I always wear them with my skirts and dresses.

  9. Anyone try on the Eyelet Derby dress yet?

  10. Picked up a pair of Downtown Skinnies in clear sky wash for about $11 in-store, these are only marked down to $88 online although eligible for an additional 30% off.

Nice-fitting skinny jean with some stretch, TTS and comfortable. They do bag out for a while and is it just me or is J.Crew denim getting thinner? These feel more like gap denim, which I stopped buying years ago due to the poor quality, even for the cheap prices. I can't really complain for eleven bucks but they were originally $108, which is insanely overpriced IMO. A couple months ago I bought a pair of J.Crew Selvedge Toothpicks that still felt pretty good quality but they were originally priced at $175 and I got them for something like $50.

The Downtown Skinnies and the Selvedge Toothpicks are the only jeans I have bought from J.Crew in well over a year. Anyone else notice a decline in denim quality or is it just hit and miss?

  11. Sorry for the complete OT posting:
Talbots is having 30% off everything, free ship with no minimum, today only.

  12. Slightly OT, but to comment on a couple of the previous posts: It is getting downright hard to find a slip or half-slip these days! I was looking for cheap half-slip at Target the other day and the girl took me to the control garments--she didn't even know what I was talking about. Even though my mom was a bit of a hippie she taught me that a lady always wears at least a half-slip with a skirt!

  13. I am super happy with the silk driving scarf in the floral (modern red). I paid full price for it but for the wear I have gotten out of it so far, it was worth it. The background colour of the scarf is a darker peachy pink than the online picture suggests but it is still really pretty. It goes with so many things, and it works with both casual and formal outfits. I have tried it with the Femme cashmere cardigan in cerise and dark denim trousers, and then I wore it as a shawl/wrap to a formal dinner, over a JC teal blue hammered silk shift dress (unfortunately, I forget the name). I'll try to post an IRL pic on my blog later this week.

  14. Factory flip-flops... SUCH cute fabrics, like J.Crew used to have a few years back. But, really cheap, light rubber, MUCH lighter than J.Crew retail, so they provide much less cushioning. Would not purchase again, but not worth sending back either. I must add, however, that this is the first factory purchase that I have been unhappy with due to quality...

  16. I received the Jenny dress on sale at the end of last week. I found that it runs very big -- possibly two sizes. I typically (used to?) wear an XS / 0 in JC tops but even this season's tees are a big large in an XS. I don't mind having a slightly roomy tee but I had inches of extra fabric in the armpits of the Jenny dress.

I'll have to return it, which is too bad because it's a cute slub knit dress.

  17. @Hexicon @tamara

I was actually just thinking the same thing! I was going to ask tamara where she gets hers :)

  18. Linen Tesa Top - Runs big. I got a 6. I'm a 10 in button down shirts and usually in blouses.

Boy shirt in sailor stripe - LOVE this. great quality. heavier weight. Will be great for summer nights.

  19. Tried on the Caroline Dress in an 8. It fit, slightly snug. Which means it runs big... My normal size is a 10. Great little dress. Fabric was smooth. Back gaped weirdly (but probably wouldn't have if I had grabbed a 10). The safari fatigue looks green in the catalog but it is actually a weird dark grey.

  20. The Castaway dress (I think it rang up as the Juliette dress in the store) is really lovely (I bought the smokey graphite color). It's a substantial cotton-linen blend and not too terribly short! I'm usually a 0 in jcrew tops and dresses but I sized down to a 00 in this one. Under the arms is still a teeny bit big on me, but not too bad. The gathered waist is very flattering and the buttons add a little something extra. Minus the 30% discount the dress comes to just under $40! I definitely recommend the Castaway to anyone looking for a simple summer dress.

  21. Hexicon - I know. The salespeople don't even know what slips are. Last time I went looking for one, Wal-Mart had a rack of them. They were hidden, but available, at JC Penney. I don't think they were at Target as I expected. And then there's always Nordstrom.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hexicon & Julia: I know what you mean about finding a reasonably priced slip (even Macy's sells them for too much).

I find that every other month, my local Marshalls & TJ Maxx will sell the same slips I can find at Macy's (which cost $30+) for $10-15 (depending on length). It's great! :)

  23. has anyone tried the factory cotton medallion dress? i think some people had ordered it awhile ago but it was backordered. i caught a pop back over the weekend that actually shipped. not sure how the neck will look or if it runs big/small.

  24. Received my order of the Silk Casbah blouse and wow I am underwhelmed. The photo on the site makes the pattern look incredible, crisp amazing colors. What I received is drab and like a watercolor washout. I noticed that if you enlarge the print on the site it much more accurately represents what this shirt looks like. I'm a bit disappointed, it's most likely going back.

  25. @StaciStaci:

RE the caroline dress: i'm dying to get this dress (on april shopping ban... c'mon may!) but can you clarify about the back gaping? and did you see the other colors? the cataloge and online colors all look a little different to me so i can't tell how pink the pink is and how gray the faded black is. thanks in advance :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. mjbeet - I finally received the factory cotton medallion dress after it being on backorder for awhile, and I was very disappointed. The print is beautiful, the dress however was a big sack on me, totally shapeless and unflattering. I ordered the XS (5' 1.5", around 118 lbs). I already shipped it back.

  27. I recognize this may be out of place but I have a question for anyone who owns a pair of the classic leather ballet flats. I bought a pair last spring in a neutral brown color( having just looked at the sight I would say they are pretty identical to the sienna color). Normally I do not wear them out in the rain for very long but the other day I ran to my car in the rain and I noticed when I got home that there were several water marks on my shoes. I thought they were just wet so I put some paper towels in them to absorb the moisture and placed them near an air vent. After several days I picked them up to discover that though they are dry they still have watermarks! Has any one else had this experience? I bought these shoes because I expected them to last. I understand leather can get touchy when it gets wet but its not like I ran through any puddles or jumped into the ocean wearing them. Is there any way to remove the stain? I am considering contacting the company because I expect more out of $120 leather shoes from J. Crew. If any one has had a similar experience I would love to hear how they resolved it. (I would like to note that I do have several pairs of other J. Crew shoes that are covered in satin or some other delicate fabric that I never wear outside, but I thought leather was made to be more durable.)

  28. marietta, thank you for weighing in! i took a chance on the large since that was my only option. figured i usually wear a medium, so i can manage... gah! at least we can return factory goods.

  29. OT, but had to share - just received email stating my back ordered Maritime dress just shipped. So if anyone else out there is waiting....our wait is almost over! (And earlier than the cited May shipping date!)

  30. Sarah, I found this interesting Leather Doctor forum thread with great photos. You'd have to buy a product or two, but if you have similar results I think you'd be really happy. It would be interesting to see if other forums had good reviews of the Leather Doctor products.

  31. Jenny Dress - Love it. I find it TTS.

Collins Platforms - Love them. They are comfy for being such a high heel

Cafe Trouser in brown - Love them and the color.

Sahara dress - Love it, great length, not too short.

Pointelle short - I was a total mess in these, they are going back. You need to be pretty thin to pull this off. They are unlined too. I am a size 4 and I felt like I was hanging out all over the place!

  32. Has anyone tried the Linen Bermuda Jacket? I'd love to know about the sizing and quality. thanks.

Stene, JCPenney has some slips online and in their stores. I also saw some on Amazon.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sarah, I do have the classic ballet flats and have had very good experience with them, but mine are black and wouldn't likely show water spots. Did you treat them before you wore them in the rain? Hard to say how untreated leather will react to even the smallest amount of water. I do have a pair in the pale birch colour that I haven't worn yet...I will be careful to watch for any spotting! Good luck with Tamara's info on cleaning.

  34. Sidewalk short #41938- shadow, $65. Mid-weight linen/cotton twill, pre-washed, so the shorts look like chinos. Fit is true to size. Was hoping leg opening would be bigger so they look a little dressier and less casual. Sort of look like Forever 21:
    http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog_name=FOREVER21&category_name=BTMs_Shorts&product_id=2077493535&variant_id=024&showBack=OK
And these are only 20$. Should be way nicer for $65!

  35. HA--thought my mom and I were the only people left on the planet who knew what a slip was!

silver-lining--as for denim weights--they don't seem to be light weight across the board at JC but I wish they would post the weight somehow in the description. I like a heavier denim without stretch. At least most retailers have finally started posting fabric content. I have found the gap has really improved their jeans over the last couple years--worth checking out but I generally don't buy any blue jeans in the spring as that is when they are all light weight.

  36. @Miss JR

The dress was snug so the waist fell at my natural waist (not low) so the box pleats in the back poofed out.... So in reality, the front didn't gape but my badonkadonk made the box pleats stick out in the back... so maybe best for someone long waisted?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jessy, do you mean that the print of the silk blouse is different from the print of the perfect shirt (and romper)? I am asking because it does look different on the online pic (with more white than the shirt and romper, which don't have white at all in them).

Sarah, I have a pair of leather ballet flats in pale oak (a nude color) and they got stained not even from the rain but from a kid splashing a waterballon near me. But I have to say that I could have guessed because they really look delicate and not treated. I have two other pairs in metallic and olive and they don't look like that, they look like the leather has been waxed. Maybe some of them are treated and some are not or maybe it just depends on the color.

  38. Just purchased the Beatrice blouse (Item 41525) in Muslin and I l-o-v-e love it! Fits TTS, in my opinion. Really like the cami that is included with it. Can't wait to wear it!

  39. a bit curious of the "castaway dress" does this run tts?? looks like a cute summer dress........thanks, for any help/advice!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Castaway runs a little big uptop and tts on bottom. I'm a 10 in pants/skirts at jcrew (sometimes a 12 in the random pencil) and I took a 10 in the castaway. Wear a 10-8 in tops lately.

  41. Thank you to all who helped me with the slip crisis. I will be stocking Marshalls and Ross. If these fail I will be heading to JCP. I can keep my confetti sweater dress...yay.

I received my last shipment today and there were some hit and misses.

Hits: Collins suede platform peep toes - Tamara was sooo right about these. They fit TTS and are versatile. I wouldn't wear them walking for hours on end, but they are perfect for a date or a day at work. Liberty springlily Astin dress - Great spring dress. Fits TTS and is flattering.

Misses: Coddington suede platform pumps - Way too small. I should have listened to everyone on here, but I just didn't want to believe it. I would need to go at least a half size, if not a full size up. I bought both the olive and the red suede which are no longer online. Does anyone know if they stretch? Should I just kill my feet for the amazing looking shoes?

Undecided: Merino Edrina dress - This dress is boxy. I am tempted to keep it because it is so comfortable, but it is not flattering at all. The dress is the correct size, but it just does not come in at all at the waist. I was thinking about a belt, but it might make the dress too short.

Again, thank you to all of the amazing JCA's who really helped me out with my slip crisis.

  42. Ema-
That is so weird about the Casbah blouse/ perfect shirt. The prints are totally different. And doesn't the blouse's back seam look off-center?

    Jessy-
I see what you mean, the print looks much more intricate from afar.

  43. Received the wool portfolio crepe dress and the fumee dress last night. Both are going back!
The wool dress has a funny cut to it, it's got these pleats at the side that for some reason were splaying open on me. The rest of the dress fit perfectly and I even had a bit of extra room in it, but I guess I'm a bit bigger across the hips and it was causing the pleats to look funny. It really widened me. But honestly, if it fit nicely paired with a big necklace and a skinny belt, I really think it would have been a nice look.
The fumee dress I bought because it was so cheap with the 30% off sale and free shipping on dresses, but man the sizing is off on that one! I bought an extra small and I swear to you it could easily have fit a large. It's got a tie waist so you can adjust it to your own size, but there was just SO much extra fabric! It looked terrible. And the grey isn't a nice, pretty grey...it's dull and smoggy looking. Back to J Crew for you both!

  44. Some price drops this morning -- urbanite, lady lace popover (all colors), canvas schoolboy, etc.

I'll post some pics of the silk Casbah top later today. I love it, but may be running a smidge tight across shoulders/back (I ordered a 2 and am going to order a 4 to compare). The online pic makes it look like a much brighter contrast than there is -- it's more muted in person.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Stene, I've got the cobblestone suede Coddingtons. I'm usually a 6.5 and got the Coddingtons in 7 and despite the extra length they still felt short in the toe area. I also noticed that my foot wanted to slide forward. But I fixed the problem by putting a shoe pad in the toe, the pad helps to keep my foot back against the heel and gives my toes more room. Maybe that will help? I'm really glad you like the Collins! It's a great shoe and with the open back and straps to hold the foot in position it doesn't have the fit problems of the Coddington.

  46. Question regarding the much maligned crosstown tee - I haven't looked at this before but coming into spring/summer I need some tops for running about on weekends that will be easy to nurse in. I dislike most actual nursing tops and this item looks like it can fit the bill and the price is now right.

I've read to size down on this. I'm roughly the same top size as pre-pregnancy wearing a 6/8 depending on fit of cami, shirt, etc. Probably around a 34C now - would a small work?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anyone have a review on the pipette cargo pant? Wondering if I should get my regular denim size in these. TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Petal Midi Skirt:
It runs small, I bought a size 0 when I'm normally a 0P in the double serge, and it fits snug on the waist. the fabric is very thin and flimsy even lined. I would definitely size up but the body of the skirt may flare more in that case. HTH

    ReplyDelete
  49. Can anyone comment on the sizing of the web buckle belt (39405)? I'm usually a 4 and want to wear it at the waist. TIA :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ema-
I haven't seen the Casbah perfect shirt or romper IRL yet. I think the true test of what the pieces might actually look like (without seeing them in store) is to search for Casbah and see all the pieces come up. The silk blouse looks much more like that depiction than it does when the model is wearing it. I wish I knew what shirt the model was wearing because I wanted it!!

I tried on the blouse last night and it's very pretty, just not the WOW pattern I was enticed to buy based on the online depiction. So sad to say it's going back :(

  53. Just received much anticipated Maritime dress. Ordered an XS as Small was much too big in store. LOVE the dress; however, I will be wearing it as a top. I am not quite 5' 9" and the XS definitely does not cover as much as I would like :) Hits me well above "finger tip" length. More like "top of thigh" length.

  54. Review of the short-sleeve selvedge chambray shirt here. It runs HUGE, size one down for sure in this one.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It is so, so, cute! Thanks Ema :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree, very cute! The pockets are in the right place, the sleeve length and overall length is good, and I like that it looks somewhat fitted without looking too stuffy. I might have to add that to my want list, I have no chambray shirts but I want one.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I just got the Beatrice blouse in muslin and it's not silk, but 100% polyester! Did anyone else get one? I'm wondering if they sent me a factory version by mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Ashley McNeal: I quickly looked at the Beatrice blouse in the olive in store and felt the fabric and I immediately thought, this feels like polyester and not silk ! I was in a hurry so I did not check the tag. I know someone else on here said they bought this blouse and loved it. Now I want to go back to my store and look at that tag again. Does factory carry this?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm not sure Factory carries it. I thought it might be a mistake because the description indicates that the blouse is "silk georgette". It ran a little big for me anyway so it's going back.
