JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I need help with the Amory floral castaway dress. What can I wear with it besides a navy jackie??? I tried white and I looked very old ladyish. Bad.

  2. J.CrewJD, have you considered a longer cardi with a tie or a belt? Because I think that style of dress is perfect for a tied/belted cardi left open in the front, like the Cotton Tie-Front Cardigan. Any of the colors would be cute IMO. In order to avoid the old-lady effect I think the cardi needs to be Madewell-ish, if you know what I mean.

  3. tamara, you are a genius. I totally know what you mean! Ok, well, I don't have too many long cardigans but I will work on it. What about the Lands End Canvas cardigan seen here? Is it too boring? I love the tie front one, I just can't afford it.

  4. J.CrewJD, your link is pointing to the J Crew web site, but I see a couple of long LEC cardis so one of them must be the one you're thinking about. They look great. I especially like that lightweight v-neck cardi.

I just looked at the Madewell site, how about the Postcard Cardigan or Tissue Cardigan? 25% off but no free shipping unless you want to spend $100, still should be a good deal. I like how they look slouchy and casual and the colors are muted.

  5. Oops... I was lusting over the calf hair Brompton earlier. Yes, I think the postcard cardi would be awesome. I am too cheap to spend $100 but I might go for it anyway. Thank you so much for your help with this dress and with the paisley poem blazer last week!

  6. I have the Cecilia dress in Retro Orange and want to wear a leather belt with it. The problem is the "self sash"--it's bulking up the dress a bit and making it impossible to belt. Any ideas for hiding (or removing) the sash? (Tying it in the back helps with overall front appearance, but doesn't solve the belt issue.) Thanks! :)

  8. There are some cute Factory cardis.
This Slub Cotton cardi is only $14.99, and shipping is free. The Austin slouchy cardi is also $29.99, it reminds me of the J Crew tie cardi, especially the pale blossom color. Maybe these are too casual?

  9. I think the Cecelia sash would need to be completely removed for a belt to look right and be comfortable. The side zip creates a slight complication, but it wouldn't be a problem for an experienced seamstress. As a temp solution before you can remove the sash properly, you could just clip the sash really close to the entry points into the dress and pull out or clip any loose threads, presuming the belt is wide enough to cover any visible remnants. :)

  10. E. on the blog academichic has done postings on how to belt over dresses with sashes. She often wraps the sash and tucks it into itself, then belts over it. I don't know the Cecelia well enough to know whether it would work, but you could give it a try. Check out her posts on there though. They tag everything to make it easy to search for things. HTH! :)
