JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  2. Ok - help me!! I scored a pair of Lindy Heels in Warm Taupe. I love the color but pairing it with anything other than black or grey is stumping me. Ideas??

BTW - they fit perfect for me. I have a slightly narrow foot.

  3. Striped Sequin Bib Tank in blue stripe. Couldn't resist it at my B & M yesterday for 13.99 (after the additional 30%), but not sure what to do with it! TIA.

  4. I have had the sequin stripe henley tank (#26531) in my closet for almost a year and have never worn it.

Same with my drapey sequin tank in Olive Moss ... it just seems like nothing I put on with these items looks right. Maybe I should just not buy anything else with sequins on it...?

Can anyone share what they've successfully paired these items with? How do *you* pull off sequins for day?

  5. Elaine,I'm glad I'm not the only sequin-challenged JCA :)

  6. MaryMoo, I have the warm taupe Lindy's too and I'm treating them like a nude-neutral and wearing them with just about any other color. I think the weathered wood kind of brown looks particularly nice with warm taupe. Another consideration, yellow-y greens like mossy oak or a pear color. I never would have considered mossy oak but the Odeon oxfords' beige part has a pink tone like the warm taupe, and it looks really great with the mossy oak part. I'm hunting for some images, will post if I find them.

  7. Elaine--I would pair Olive Moss with Khaki, brown, or actually Purple pants or skirts--and gold jewelry! HTH

  8. Here are some outfits I think are perfectly suited for the warm taupe Lindys: 1, 2, 3, 4. I'm liking that last picture with the pumpkin colored cardigan.

  9. Elaine - See the sequin stripe henley tank on Fashion Dork. Her outfit is simple and may give an idea. I would try a thin cami underneath, unbutton a button or two, a couple of layering necklaces & a blazer over it all. Pants or skirt would work on the bottom.

The sequin drapey, that one fits closer to the body, imo. I've worn it under v-neck sweaters and longer wrap sweaters where there is a low-v. I think it works well for daytime.

  10. OT - I love FasionDork's blog - I wish we could comment and tell her how much we love her ;) If you are reading - love your blog!

  11. I have three sequin stripe henley tanks and love them! I basically just wear them as a normal tank top. They look great under a cardian . . .I've worn mine under some of JCrew's ruffle cardigans or Jackies. Also great under a blazer. You can definitely wear necklaces over it like Gigi noted. Don't let the sequins hold you back . . .they are a simple touch that makes these a tad more interesting than a regular cotton tank top. I also found a really cute lace jacket at Anthropologie that I wear these under . .the mixing of textures works!

  12. Elaine, I haven't tried to wear the drapey sequin tank in the daytime yet, but one look I really like (although it's unexpected) is that olive moss color with skinny black jeans. I somehow picked up a pair of Steve Madden platform heels in almost that same mossy color and they have been languishing in my closet for years. But wearing all three together actually looks really good (I find that sometimes that shirt looks more army green and sometimes more brown, depending on the light). I also think the polyvore sets are helpful:

I love the sequin stripe henley tanks! I have the grayish color from last year, and picked up the factory (in-store only) blue color a few weeks ago. I can't wait to wear it with skinny white jeans! For now, I think they are fine for daytime as long as you can wear something over them (like in the blog Gigi linked to). I usually wear mine with skinny jeans, platform sandals, a light cardigan or blazer, and some chunky jewelry (but you don't need much). Now that I'm thinking about it, I want to try one of the tanks under the factory end-on-end camp shirt. I'm in Florida, so my layering days are numbered (it's pretty consistently in the high 80s now).

  13. Someone on polyvore did olive moss with warm taupe and it actually looks really nice together. This particular set is better suited for fall, but I think with sandals and a light colored bag it could work for spring.

  14. Thanks so much for the ideas, y'all! I really liked those pics of fashiondork ... maybe I could work the stripe henley with some white jeans or my white busted denim mini plus a cardi of some sort, hmmm.

tamara, I really like those colors together! I doubt I ever would have paired them up, but I love the look.

PS and OT, did anyone else think Julie Bowen was wearing the short Icon trench in last night's ep of Modern Family? I'm pretty sure it was the Light Khaki Short Icon.

    I have a sickness, lol.

  15. I have a sickness too. :) How many times have you been on the J Crew web site today? I think I'm up to 4 now, will be more later!

  16. OT- I'm looking for a white tunic. Not too long to long; to kind of scrunch into the front of jeans and leave the back hanging out a bit. TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Elaine: I thought the same thing (Modern Family/Claire)! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  18. @pathos - Have you seen the voile tuxedo tunic (item 38993) in the Sale section? The only thing is, the fabric looks extremely sheer in the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Louise: I know! I should have edited my request: not too sheer! I want to wear it with trouser pants to church-lol!

  20. Looking for help with the Paisley Poem Blazer, a collection piece from last year that I recently scored on eBay for.... $10. Today I wore it with an olive green tank, pixies, and camel nottinghams. Beyond that, I'm stumped. What other colors can I pair it with? Thank you :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. J.CrewJD - JC description mentions pink & green on your fab Ebay score, but I can't get a good read on the colors on my monitor. I would be inclined to try an orange tank under with a brown belt over the jacket. Lighter to medium in color on the belt than darker. And it sounds like pink under the jacket would work as well, if you wear it. Maybe purple, too and you'd be surprised how much navy will ground a piece. For colors these colors, I'm thinking of under the blazer or scarf accessory. I figure the bottoms are easy once you have the top figured out.

  22. Here's a big picture of the Paisley Poem Blazer. Super cute! I see the pink in it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Gigi, thanks for the ideas! It does have pink in it, sort of... the colors are very muted. It is more like peachy colors. So I think navy would really look good. And orange. I am going to try all of your suggestions :)

Tamara, thank you for providing the big picture!!!

It is really cute. I have the rose vines blazer too (too small for me though, size 4, for sale on the exchange!)... something about these printed blazers just gets me. Or really, anything Liberty print!

  25. That blazer was regularly $228, it's incredible that you got it for $10, what a find!

I found a catalog page though it's not particularly helpful, and also other images from the web site you've probably seen already but I'll post them anyway: front, side, back, and main product page. I have to say it looks really cute with a white shirt and denim.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks for the shout-out, tamara! That PV was mine. :)

  27. +1 on the drapey sequin in olive moss. I am totally stumped.

How about the current season's plaid blazer and the gingham scout pants? Me thinks the pants should just say their goodbyes and head back to the store.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh Rose, cool! It's great combo of colors and textures! You'll have to whip up one for the olive moss drapey sequin tank. :)

  29. Elaine: I'm late to chime in on the Sequin Henley tank (I was offline most of yesterday), but I usually wear mine by themselves with white pants or boyfriend chinos and sandals. (Polyvores here and here.) I've also worn it under my Contrast-stitch chambray shirt paired with my Matte jersey curator pants. (IRL pic here.) I didn't wear either tank during the winter months but have brought them out of hibernation to start wearing again now that spring is here. :)

  30. Thank you FFM, that does me double good, because I still struggle with my contrast-stitch perfect shirt! :)

  31. Looking for suggestions on what to pair with the Vineyard pencil skirt. Normally, I'm a "matchy-matchy" person, but there's nothing that really matches this skirt so I'm thinking I need to go in a different direction. The website shows it paired with a mint cardigan, and actually that combo does look good IRL. Any other suggested color pairings?

    ReplyDelete
  32. The vineyard skirt is so neutral I think just about any other color would go with it! I'm particularly fond of melon, citron, and pear with grey. IMO whatever you wear on top needs to have some color-depth, I think the cardi they show with it is nice color but too pale, the skirt overpowers it.

  33. Elaine: You're welcome! As for the contrast-stitch perfect shirt, it has to be one of my all-time favorite J.Crew purchases so far. It really can be worn with just about anything and everything. Try it under a navy blazer with white pants or jeans, or skip the blazer and pair the shirt/white jeans with cognac shoes and gold accessories (click here). I've worn it with black capris, blue denim, the Ikat pencil skirt, just to name a few. It actually looks fantastic with most of the pencil skirts at J.Crew. I would say it has got to be one of the most used J.Crew shirts on Polyvore. You can see tons of ideas here. HTH! :)

  34. FFM, I might copy your outfit with the contrast stitch shirt this weekend :) Love the blue, white, congnac, gold combo!

I recently picked up the factory version (I think they're pretty similar) and it's a perfect lightweight shirt. I know it's going to be one of my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Catrina: Thanks! The combo looks so good together IRL and is one of my favorites. :)

I've heard nothing but good reviews about the factory version of the shirt. Definitely a nice alternative if you missed out on the original. Congrats on getting it! :)

  36. Not sure where this belongs but just wanted to tell you guys that I decided to "Marissa-cize" my GAP navy shrunken blazer. I bought the exact same cute nautical gold buttons that are on Marissa's jacket for like $5, took it to the tailor switched out the blue for gold buttons and also had the sleeves shortened to 3/4. I really like the way her jacket looks like that. I'm excited to see how it turns out!

  37. J.CrewJD - Now that we see Tamara's link to the blazer, you have to try pink w/it. I still think an orange would go. Maybe something more pale than strong. I have the roses vine and thought of it when I was suggesting colors for the one you're keeping.

Jojo - If you're struggling w/the pants, maybe take them back. No offense to anyone, but I'm not a fan of 'em. They seem very 50s and not modern. I

Jruby18 - That sounds cute. I think I have the same blazer & can see gold buttons on it to bump things up. Fun!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks, Tamara, for your suggestions for the Vineyard pencil skirt. Those sound great!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks Gigi! Yeah the pants are cute in theory but in practice, not so much.

    Back they go...

  40. gigi, I agree with you about an orange color with the Paisley Poem blazer, I think the pink in the blazer is so subtle that just about any color in the pink-orange tones would work. Maybe a provence pink would be nice, it's kind of in between pink and orange. I had seen a catalog image of the blazer with white top and denim as on the web site except with an added pink scarf. If I can find it again I'll post the link, it was really cute! The scarf wasn't tied, just looped around the neck hanging loose.

    ReplyDelete
  41. gigi, you mentioned earlier that you have the Roses Vine blazer. I'm considering one for sale on eBay. How do you like it? How is the fit, etc.? TIA!

  42. For you Liberty print lovers, I came across this Barney's ad image of a light Liberty print shirt and a dark Liberty print skirt, and IMO it's really cute! I would have thought so much floral would be excessive, but it's not.

  43. I just picked up a lovely (old) J. Crew Pencil skirt at Goodwill. Looking for styling ideas.

  44. Ok, I have another item for you ladies... the Amory Floral Castaway Dress. The print is coral, straight up. The background is white. What to wear with it besides a navy Jackie? I am not even that thrilled with the navy Jackie idea. I need some creative ideas! Tamara, Gigi? You guys had such great ideas for my paisley poem blazer! (I wore it the other day with a light pink/peach tank, at your suggestion!)
