J.Crew Email: Mad about Minnie

"Thanks!" to xoxo, Ketan, as well as Corry (in this post), who shared another product email J.Crew sent today. It makes you wonder what the criteria are for some of us to get one email (the cardigan), while the rest get another (the pants)...

The email features the Stretch Twill Minnie Pant (Item 18850; $79.50, select colors now $49.99) which is described as:
If you buy one pant this season, make it Minnie. She's chic and slim-fitting (thanks to a flattering two-way stretch fabric) with a vintage-inspired cropped leg that we love.
First, happy to see they are still priced at $79.50 (& not $89.50 like in January of this year). Second, the Minnie is clearly not going anywhere. This is J.Crew's new classic wardrobe staple.

What are your thoughts on the Stretch Twill Minnie Pant? Do you like or dislike the style of the cropped leg pants? :)

  1. Sorry, gals. I hate the Minnie pant. I'm 5'4", 135 pounds, have decent legs, and I hate the way the Minnie pant looks on me. I know many, many JCAs love this pant, and JCrew is hawking it like it's the next best thing since the Jackie, but it just doesn't work on me...and honestly, I have a hard time seeing how it works on everyone else. I'm a pretty "standard" body shape. How could it be so right on everyone and so wrong on me???

  3. Sorry to hear that these pants don't work for you Megan. I have a black pair, and I LOVE them!

  4. I do love the minnie.... I hear they are coming to us in plaid for the fall!!

I like the clean lines, and I like how the pants feel when I'm wearing them. So comfortable. Just enough stretch that they are legging like, but of course, the cut and the material make them dressier than leggings!

The blue color is on sale right now, and I nabbed a pair! Along with..... {drum roll please} the turkish delight skirt for a song!!! so happy to see it popped back!

  5. I tried them on months ago when it came out (I am 5'6 and a size 6) and they were not flattering at all...pass

  6. Megan--I am with you except for the denim minnies with the zippers--you might give them a try. I am quite tall and relatively thin size 0-4 and I never liked them either until I found those. They are more flattering on me and don't seem like leggings which I don't care for at all.

  7. Love the Minnie! I'm nearly 5'6", 130 lbs and generally don't love my hip and thigh region, but these pants make me feel like a sexpot! I ordered them in black in a size 2 and they fit like a dream. Dressed up with heels or dressed down with flats or sandals, these pants are pure perfection. The only SLIGHT downside is that toward the end of a wear the material stretches out a little.

I'm dying to try the denim version, but haven't quite gotten around to it. If anyone has comments on fit and sizing that would be really helpful!

  8. I've changed my mind a bit on these since I caught an "accidental" look at myself in them (you know, not standing up tall at the correct angle to the mirror). I've decided that the skinny silhouette combined with the low waist isn't the best for my short-legged hourglass figure.

If you are thinking about these, size down! It's counterintuitive but these look best when they're quite snug. I should have gone with the 0 because the 2s stretched out quite a bit.

I do love that plaid though!

  9. I love the Minnies! (the Pixies too for that matter) Although the secret for me was to size up one. Also, the oultlet has a version they were calling the "monroe" which I got back in May for like $30. And I honestly, can't tell the difference between those and the real things.Actually very well made. So maybe if you're on the fence about the style and don't want to test drive at the higher price point, the outlet version might be a good alternative.

  10. I don't like the Minnie pant at all. I'm 5'9" and built like a stick on the bottom half. They sag and bag even sizing down. IME they look better on women lucky enough to have some curves.

If they come in plaid I may have to succumb and have them tailored to fit. I have a thing for plaid pants and own several pair. Burberry make the best ones ever but J.Crew has had some nice fully-lined wool ones in the past too.

  11. The Chic Chauffeur, congrats on the Turkish Delight pencil skirt. I have worn mine several times. It looks really good with a blue v-neck tee, if you wear blue. The print is quite fancy so I find myself reaching for very basic tops to go with it. It's a beautiful skirt.

  12. I'm not a Minnie fan. I'm still a solid 10 on the bottom and I just don't feel like these flatter my figure. And if I did wear them, I'd feel obligated to wear something long and/or blousy on top to mitigate the fact that these are really just good old-fashioned stretch pants, albeit in a classier material.

However, I will cop to having bought what I call "jeggings" -- similar, I guess, to denim Minnies, but I found them at A&F for $16 last week. I'm holding on to them for fall and still unsure of what to wear with them, or if I will even wear them at all. I figured for $16 I could take the chance. I'm planning to hit y'all up for styling ideas when the time comes to bust them out! :-D

This from a person who looked askance at Matchstick jeans when they first came out, and for years afterward, and downright LOLed at the Toothpick cut ... and now I live in those damn Matchsticks!

  13. I bought the wild blackberry Minnies on sale a few weeks ago. I really like them! I'm 5'9" and I ordered them in the tall version, 30" inseam. They hit right at my ankle and are cute, slightly cropped pants. When I tried on the regular size, they were higher on the calf like capri pants.

The size T6 fit perfectly to my body, but I sized up because I will be wearing them in the classroom and I don't want them to be too form fitting. My SA also said they will shrink depending on how you take care of them. Have any of your Minnies shrunk in the wash/dryer or do they retain their shape?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Megan,
I am with you. Not a fan. I am 5'10" and refuse to wear cropped pants. I spent my whole life trying to find pants that are the proper length!

    ReplyDelete
  15. They don't work if you're short and have saddlebags (you just look short and dumpy). They don't work if you're tall and lanky (they just look like they shrunk in the wash). They only work if you're mid height, are proportionately figured and have a nice solid ass.

  16. I'm 5'4", 140 lbs, have decent legs like Megan. Cannot do tapered and stretchy a la the Minnie. Years ago, when I worked at the Gap (and 15 lbs lighter!), they had a VERY similar pant, and I tried them in the cropped length, regular length, size up, size down...all to no avail. So have not owned a pair of skinny anything until 3 years ago...now I'm with Elaine. I have 3 pairs of straight Jeans, 2 from AE and 1 from some brand from England (escapes me right now). And I ALWAYS wear an A-line top or boyfriend shirt to balance out the derriere.

Guess it all depends on 1) how you feel about your legs 2) where you carry your weight. Plaid pants though? Definite NO for me. Mrs. Betty Draper can sport them though... check out Mad Men reruns. :)

  17. Amanda: LOL. Gotta have a little bah-donk-ah-donk. Love it. ;)

Maybe that is why I love the Minnies so very much.

(I do order the tall when I can, though, love the extra length so they can reach my ankles.)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Not a Minnie fan. They were marked down to 9.99 minus 30% off and I still passed. BTW there was a full table of them in Montgomery Mall. As much as I like toothpicks, I dislike Minnies. Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  19. i picked up a pair of black minnies at the sample sale today but then set them right back down because i remembered how TERRIBLE they look on me. (same height/weight as meghan) i'll stick to my skinny jeans!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I hated the minnie on me. I LOVE my toothpicks, though. Not a fan of the matchstick on me, either.

    ReplyDelete
  21. didn't know they came in tall--yippee--now I can have a pair for winter too. thanks for all the comments. I too love plaid pants, can't believe I didn't see them in the lookbook.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think the Minnie pant is OK. I am almost 5 ft 11 in. and I normally wear an 8, but I still found the 6 to be a little too baggy in the waist. Also, since I didn't get a tall size, the length does look like capri pants on me, which is OK since I'm only planning on wearing them tucked into boots. My favorite fit so far is the toothpick.

    ReplyDelete
  23. xoxo-I agree! When I put on pants like these, I only wish I had curves. I am too much of a string bean. I did just buy a pair of jean leggings (which I swore I'd never do as I thought the look was on the way out), and I do like them. Must be the jean styling that gives the pant (and my rump) more to look at. But I do need to pass on these.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think I tried the regular minnies when they first came out & they were a pass for me. I do love the dark denim minnies with the zippers! I can't believe I'm writing that (guess I'm a 'sheeple') but I wore them today w/a navy/white striped cotton bathing suit coverup from 2007 (long enough to cover my bum!) & a pair of wedges. So cute & really comfortable. Oh yeah, I knew when I purchased them for $13, if I didn't like the zippers they'd work w/my boots in the fall/winter.

  25. I have a pair of black Minnies and really like them. I'm like to get a couple more colors for fall, especially grey. The Minnies are pretty much perfect for my body and are such a good outfit basic.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh how I wish the Minnie looked good on me. I find the skimmer, the toothpick ankle, and the matchstick cuts to flatter me, but the Minnie makes me look shorter and wider. It makes me sad. I keep trying them on in the vain hope that a pair will work for me, but to no avail.

  27. Not a lover of the Minnie. I am 5'4", 105 pounds, and the size 00 minnies stretches and slides pass by butt crack during the day of wearing. It's really annoying and unless I wear a belt, it magically expands and drops pass my waist. I personally prefer Ann Taylor size 0P more.

  29. Sorry, you will never get me into a tapered pant. I'm 5'6", 125 pounds, and NO WAY. Even rail skinny models often look ice cream cone shaped in them. I remember when Stacy London from "What Not To Wear" on TLC used to carry on and on about not wearing tapered legs or skinny jeans. That it's only flattering on someone with the frame of a 13 year old boy. And then, I saw her in them a while back. Would love to call her on it. I keep waiting, increasingly impatiently, for them to GO AWAY. I even saw "jeggings", jeans crossed with leggings at AE. BOOOOO. And the 1980's extreme distressing they are now throwing in? I know I sound like an old person (I'm 35) who is against new trends, but I really think I am open minded and will try most other fads. But the skinny jeans thing is so unflattering on most women, based solely on the laws of perception/physics, I just will never go there. That is, unless I want to look like an ice cream cone. Ok, I'm done.

  30. Megan, it isn't you, MOST women are deluding themselves if they think they are flattering. Anything that tapers will always make your hips look wider than they really are. I really don't understand this unquestioning adherence to this fashion trend, it's serious ongoing. We don't do that with other things, boobs, face shape, eye shape, hair thickness, etc. We usually try to play down severe angles. People with DD's usually try to minimize them, people with wide faces avoid certain haircuts, fine hair--avoid wearing it too long, etc. etc. There are certain "rules" that are usually a matter of basic aesthetics, but the designers and fashion gods have really sucked people in on this one. You can't even find a good bootcut or flare jean anymore.

  31. I have 2 pairs of "crewlet minnies" aka the "winnies": the black and the wild blackberry. I'm a size 6 in them, 5'1", and not a stick at all, haha! I'm a curvier gal and my legs are very muscular (and short). The regular "winnies" hit at my lower ankle. If I were to buy the minnie, I'd definitely get a petite because the ones I tried on in the B&M were long-ish and awkward. The quality of the crewlet versions are comparable to the B&M ones, and you can get the black ones for about $30.

With that said, I personally love the minnies/winnies! For some reason, they look better on my shape than skinny/straight jeans (I have to get stretchy ones anyway). The length of the pant is more flattering than rolled up jeans, and the waist actually fits me! (I ALWAYS have this problem: in order to accommodate my thighs, my pants are loose at the waist and usually require a belt or lots of pulling back up!)

Did I mention that the stretch and fabric are SO COMFORTABLE? :) It's great when you can just bend over, squat, cross your legs... and not be hindered :P (my job--for which I dress casually--is very active).

So ultimately, these are a much more streamlined, chic option instead of skinny jeans. I like that the pant doesn't hug every single nook and cranny (they do stretch out after a long day of wear), unlike some skinny jeans and jeggings (HA!) I have tried on. I like to wear mine with 2" t-strap sandals and a button-down, sometimes with a skinny belt to cinch my waist.

  32. @Amy: While I understand you have very strong opinions on tapered pants, I would like to comment on behalf of those ladies who are not "average-sized". If I followed the rules you listed for buying pants, I'd only be able to wear wide-leg trousers/jeans. I have really muscular calves, so bootcut jeans look funny when they flare out at my calves instead of my knees. Flares have too much extra fabric at the bottom, which messes with my proportion. Also, my hips lean toward the narrow, so in order to make my waist look more defined, I opt for pieces that will give me the illusion of fuller hips. So I suppose I am limited to wide-leg for all 4 seasons until I lose 30 lbs...?

We all come in different shapes and sizes, and if you're under 30, I'd like to think that a girl should be able to wear something akin to the minnie pant without the whole world passing judgement on her legs... People will see them at the pool/beach anyway!

  33. Chrissy, you are right, we all have our challenges. Sorry, my rant probably sounded more like a rant on women vs. skinny pants. Not my intention. I am a feminist, and do NOT think women should be a certain size or shape! I just have it out for tapered pants of any sort. It has nothing to do with how long or short (capri), more to do with the taper. Sorry, I really didn't mean to make it sound like women should not look like women. I think I have been building up with how over-pushed it is, and I had a "moment" of venting. Please accept my regrets. Maybe it's because ALL my fat/flab is in my stomach/midsection, my butt if FLAT, and my limbs are thin, so I feel "left out" from this trend because I do not want to look like more of an apple than I already am!

    ReplyDelete
  34. OK, ladies, as an apology for my rant I VOW to TRY ON the Minnie in the store tomorrow. It's on. Maybe I'll snap a pic.

  35. Gigantic restock just a few minutes ago.

  36. Not a fan. I tried these in 4 different sizes and they never looked right. I prefer the cocktail/cafe capris, or skimmer pant.

    ReplyDelete
  37. OT - but thanks to Desert Flower's comment on the restock I had to go have a look and I'm considering the Hockney tote. Anyone try this and can offer an opinion? I like the Rhubarb or Orchid Shadow colors.

    TIA

  39. I am a big NO on the Minnies. I was in a store chatting with the SA and another lady - we were all different body types and we all said NO!!!
@ Amy - I totally get your frustration - I feel this is such a tricky style to pull off - tapered and cut to the ankle. I love the whole retro vibe of them and want them to work for me but sadly they do not. None of the tapered cuts work for me and my husband HATES the look too.
And now I really don't understand the pleated silky, tapered ankle pant I keep seeing.
I am in my 30's too and maybe just had too much of this in my younger days. All the tapered, zippered Jordache Jeans and pleated pants I rocked in the 80's

    ReplyDelete
  40. The minis don't work for me either. I'm 5'6 about 135 lbs and I have hips. My legs are nice but these don't do anything for me. I look fantastic in J.Crew's matchsticks though and also Cafe Capris.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Minnies. I am 5'0"/96lbs and I have them in 0P. I thought I'd never be able to participate in the cropped trend, but these definitely fit the bill.

    ReplyDelete
  42. PREACH ON, Sister Amy! I wholeheartedly agree with your post. I really think fashion should be uplifting! There isn't a one size fits all, or a one size flatters all, but there's something insidious about the taper that's sucking the good aesthetic sense out of an amazing cross section of people... Male, female, young, old, and who are they really looking good on? The high school boys who wear them with ironically big sneakers, a plaid shirt and a goobery neckerchief? Yes, I'm sure plenty of people wear them decently, and I'm not judging the people that aren't. It's more the pervasiveness of something that is more universally UNflattering. Sure it is fun to try new things, but it is so odd the taper/jegging/acid wash is ubiquitous these days. Please don't even let me get onto the subject of my pet endangered species, the unwhiskered wash jean. It's just too painful.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Rachel, lol, I forgot about the somewhat scary pleat comeback. I like them on SOME women's styles, but if they ever come back in style for men, I'm opening a vein. CheesyGoodness, lol, so well said about the cross section of people affected. Funny. I think it is a generation thing. I remember in the 80's when our tapered pants just weren't tight enough, so we used to gather them, make them as tight as possible by folding over a flap, and ROLL THEM. And I saw them doing just that on the Martin and Osa website for men not too long ago. Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Love the Minnie! I have them in 3 colors and considered buying doubles at recent sales "just in case" something ever happened to my favorite pants! I am 5'5-1/2" about 128 and I wear a 6, with a belt ( waist is a little loose) for my go-to work pant. I could size down but like a looser fit for the office. I can't wait to see new colors for fall! The only ones I don't like are the denim - can't get pAst the ankle zip!

    ReplyDelete
  45. My daughter and I think we have figured out the Minnie dilemma. We're both thin -- she's 5'11 and I'm 5'5. We both wear JCrew fashions, in general, well. But the Minnie is not about ht, wt, or size. It's about hip size (as in the bones themselves). I do not have narrow hips (not talking about fat, but bone structure) so that the Minnie and others like it look funny -- if someone is any size or wt, and has narrow hips -- the Minnie will work.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well, I don't even wonder why who gets which email. Frankly, I got them both, and I would NEVER wear a sweater to the beach (maybe possibly the boardwalk) and they don't even make Minnies in my size (14)!
    Go figure.

    Hi everyone,
Can anyone help me identify these items from the november 2009 catalog? I'm looking for the name and color of the striped sweater and the name and color of the jacket featured on model erin wasson. They're so beautiful!
    Thanks in advance.

  49. Joyce,

Per the Nov. 2009 catalog, page 5, the model is wearing:

-coat: Wool duffle coat, item 19647, in Wild Blackberry

-striped top: Merino microstripe turtleneck sweater, item 19876, in Navy/Ivory

  50. @Amy and the other 30 somethings who lived through the acid-washed/tapered/pleated 80's. LOL. I remember when the first skinny pants came out a few years back, the fashion editors all touted them as the "new Audrey" pant. Then I saw this photo of Ms Hepburn in a black pair on a bicycle and her behind looked HUGE and I thought, if the namesake can't look good in them, what hope do we mere mortals have? I've been covering up my behind ever since.
