Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

    1. Oh em geeeee - I just pulled that link up. So awful. And Popsugar describes it as so easy to pictures ourselves in those outfits! no no no. Can I just say I never want to see another shirt half tucked in the front? And that big skirt that wraps in the front is tragic....as is the big black flower on the belt. This is the best they could do????

    2. And they need to stop pushing pajamas as dayware. Just stop. Drab colors, clown proportions and silhouettes. Horrible.

    3. I also am not a fan of the pajama look. The prints are beautiful - make some pretty cami's - where are all the beautiful print cami's/tanks??

  4. I stopped in this week to do a return and to look at a couple of things. Also for some reason I no longer get the style guide in the mail. geez. Not much of the new items interest me. Of course the sales reps were all over me about the cherry print. I told them I'd never wear it. Stripes and plaids are as far as I go. A couple of items I wanted to look at the store didn't even have. My impression is that this rollout is very subdued in style and color. But....maybe they're saving their crazy for that Spring 2017 collection. Ha.

    1. So funny! I stopped by a store for some returns and noticed the gray cherry print top as I was leaving and one of the SAs started talking it up, I'm with you, stripes, plaid and houndstooth, ok...I do love my daisy blazer but it's pretty geometric as far as florals go. Cherries? I'm not sure it's for me. I do happen to love the red and black color way but still not sure I'm into wearing cherries. (Or watermelon or other fruits.)

  5. I don't think I've said anything nice about J. Crew in a long time, so I will say something nice: I like the City Trench. Unfortunately (or fortunately for me), I have the Encore Trench from 2012 and I still get compliments every time I wear it, so I don't need another trench coat. But, the City Trench looks nice, at least. Of course, it could be a cheaply made piece of junk that will fall apart, but at first glance, its cute.

    1. I saw that trench in store today and the color is lovely. It looked pretty nice, didn't try it on and since I have 4 (no shame) trenches from J.Crew, I will sitting this one out. I have a beautiful collection cashmere navy trench that I picked up at the clearance store this past spring. It was too late to wear it but I will be ready this year.

    2. I like it as well...but the color is alittle....off. as in it is not kacki.or brown or beige....it is a color I might not love in a fewths time

  6. Also stopped in to make some returns. Actually placed an order this AM for a few items I've been curious about, the ratti into the wild boy shirt, the fringey tweed jacket, which I love but I think will be too boxy on me (and is very similar to the blazer from last winter which I had to have and haven't worn), a few tees and a shirt for my husband. I was hoping to see some of these items in the sale rack there was nothing much of interest (aside from two screaming boys pushing each other in a stroller right at the entry to the sale section while their mom was in the more open children's section. I seriously couldn't get out of there fast enough, other than the fact that they were blocking the entrance so I actually couldn't.)

    1. Stopped into the store on Michigan Ave since I'm visiting. Used my bday discount & tried on some items for sizing. Ordered into the wild print boy shirt too. I love the pants, so hoping this works too. Nice sale update this am so also decided to try the navy wool flannel crop pants on sale; this silhouette is back for fall, so I'd like to try it without full price. And picked up Collection Off Shoulder green silk dress from NYFW. It popped back in multiple sizes & with sale I decided to try. If it works, I will style it like the model with the gingham ankle tie wrap sandals that I've worn a ton. Looks like this trend is going to be back for next spring. Saw it @ Tory Burch show too.

  7. Here's a classic look featuring the slingback flats in snakeskin printed leather, Madewell denim, and a vintage J.Crew top that's very "on trend).

  8. Hi, all, I checked the email that I got from the clearance store, and yes, what they sent is right: 30% all sweaters and pants. But, what I didn't admit to is that I saw a royal blue tweed swing coat when I was there on Wednesday. I tried it on, a little big, a size 6, but I had nothing but a tee-shirt under it. I called the store and asked the SA to hold it for me. I think I'm just going to get it, I love coats, and this one screams "well done" for the brand.

  9. I stopped in yesterday to see if any new arrivals would catch my eye in person. Overall I'm underwhelmed by this rollout but there are some good basics to be found. Sale was 40% off at my store (wish they would do the same online!)

I tried on several items, including the Silk Twill Windowpane Dress, Two Piece Dress in Silk Baby Dot, Campbell Blazer in Donegal Wool, Cherry flutter sleeve blouse, jacquard dot Tippi and V-neck swing sweater. You can see photos on my blog here.

    1. Great reviews, Anne! I agreed with many of your comments about some of the items. I usually like fruit/critter patterns, but I'm finding that these cherries aren't a total must have for me. I felt the exact same way about that two-piece baby dot dress -- the waist is quite high up. Bummer. At least the blazers seem like a sure thing!

  10. Thought I share this... bought Bali slides in navy suede and will probably order the gold ones. They are made in Italy and have leather sole, which is so hard to find. The suede is super soft. They look so elegant. TTS, ( half size go up to next full). So comfortable, wore them all day and they still on me. They did not come in a box, did not have a duster bag, clipped together like flip flops, but very classy and elegant. Thought I would be returning them when I ordered, but Highly recommend.

    1. I thought the suede would stretch....and they would be falling or slipping off
... I tried the gold ones ...here i found the sole very hard-maybe just too flat for me. but happy your enjoying them.

  13. I was just thinking the other day - whatever Jenna wears sells. I actually don't think that Jenna should have receded from the face of JCrew as much as she has. From a time when it was all about Jenna, Marissa and then Gayle (didn't get her), now there's no one.

    1. Marissa Webbs spring NY Fashion.....show was FABULOUS!!!
put J Crews to shame. Bring her BACKKKKKK.....

    2. @unknown, agree, her show had some lovely pieces and was cohesive! I wish she could go back to Jcrew, the ss show did not make me hopeful that jcrew's on the right track. I hope that Somsack goes back to some classic Jcrew (prints, colours) but I didn't get that vibe from the show. I hope he doesn't channel too much Madewell design into Jcrew.

    3. Evidently khaki, gingham and ruffles will be big for spring as it was all over the Marissa Webb runway as well.

    4. Wasn't Jenna's prominence always a contentious issue? I like Jenna but how do we know what she wears always sells? What happened to Marissa Webb at BR? She didn't do so well there. Maybe it's a combination of people at J.Crew that was responsible for their success.

    5. Hi st, yes Jenna's presence became contentious, when they started choosing models who looked like her twin (or were made to). But that's a bit of the problem - the crazy veering back and forth JCrew does. There's no moderation. It wants to mass produce clothes like the budget clothes lines, but it wants to be exclusive like middle tier designers. They could have scaled back Jenna some, rather than remove her as much as they have. She does sell bc her styling and the pieces she wears are always in higher demand. Of course, I have no stats, just the little JCA focus group here. I keep thinking there must be smth they see in their spreadsheets that we don't... That's the hope anyway! They've got too much stuff and to make it classic they often make it boring or make unexpectedly poor design choices. They do loads of marketing, but nowadays it's too chatty and cheesy. Then in the middle of that they seem to remember that sequins were a thing and we see sequin and tulle explosions. In the middle of that, if we finally see a capsule collection (why, though?) that Jenna is styling, it's actually attractive. Not new, just attractive. That's what they don't get: don't reach so much for new, do that by degrees. Reach for attractive. Ok, sorry, extra long musing over!

    6. I thought this comment from the Net a Porter piece on Jenna Lyons was extremely telling:

Buying men’s clothes is second nature to me because, growing up, nothing in the women’s section fit me. I get all my shirts tailored – I have about 70 white shirts and I get more made every season. I’m not so interested in having an hourglass shape. I think Kim Kardashian looks awesome, her body is insane, but it’s not one that I can relate to.

Most women I know, true hourglass figure or not, want to look feminine in clothing. I don't want to look like I shopped in the men's department. Also, she has 70 white button down shirts? I can honestly say I have one. And I don't even wear it very often. I just feel like her aesthetic is not my aesthetic at all. I don't want to wear pajamas or sneakers with sequins. I want to look cool, polished, pretty and put together.

    7. Yup, I agree. I think the stuff Jenna does is eclectic for her buyers. We like to delve into in, but not adopt it wholesale. But we do all feel inspired by her. She can definitely help with steering. To your point, Blakemdjohns, Marissa's stuff was always feminine too. Looking at her MW line, I see so many pieces that remind me of older JCrew pieces. So the two made a good team steering JCrew's aesthetic. Plus, we were in a booming economy. The spending had to slow down. The pain JCrew is feeling is not isolated to just this store or just this industry. It's everywhere. In the middle of that, a terrific thing to do would be to use some brain power and take a step that would simultaneously help them reposition the brand and become less wasteful. JCrew customers do not like to waste their money. Do one rollout per month, or one every 6 weeks. But focus on good materials (and charge a little higher for them if you must). In a post-everlane world, though, we all have a pretty good idea of how high their margins are too. So I think the answer has to lie somewhere in the area of: make less more and make it prettier. Give us less verbiage of how you love the Ratti stuff and really produce more than one good print per season. Focus on cuts, really show some design details beyond throwing sequins and ruffles at things. Have the line of staples in the background (and maybe never put the staples on sale: like a key cardi, a key cami, a key pant. Those are workhorses, so don't discount them, and don't lower quality on them.)
I have a lot to suggest here, and I know a lot of fellow JCAs do as well. I'm also a strictly sale shopper with JCrew, but now, I'm tired of pricing games and stalking popbacks. Who knows when they'll do the outreach they should do the JCA community. Constructive criticism is smth JCrew doesn't seem to have high appetite for.

    9. Wonderfully worded, Maqsad! Hit all the nails on the head,I think. I hope they are starting to implement or at least think about some of these things you mentioned, including who they want to be as a retailer.

    10. Just like Jenna can't relate to Kim Kardashian's figure, I can't relate to Jenna's (or Kim's). Jenna always looks good, but I don't think I can wear what she wears. She's so tall and thin. Few people are built like Jenna. Maybe J. Crew figured that out and stopped pushing her so hard. They could have kept her around a bit more for sure, I like her and I like her style, but I'd appreciate seeing what their clothes look like on other body types too.

      Delete
    11. I see your point, though I think the connections with lower profits or sales has to be spelled out a bit more. I mean, did JCrew of yore design for different body types? Has the customer base changed for the new JCrew and the unhappy customers are on the margin? why isn't a full size range sufficient to allow customers with different shapes to make it work (that one's really tricky for them! We JCAs would have a lot to say about that, if they'd only listen).
On a related note, why not hire some good new designers who are eager to make their mark, and passionate about design? http://qz.com/784952/emmys-fashion-2016-christian-siriano-won-the-emmys-red-carpet-by-making-women-of-all-shapes-and-ages-look-and-feel-beautiful/?utm_source=qzfb - the CFDA Collins have all been pie in the sky and overpriced for new designers. Where's the touch of grit that real life requires?
