JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Ok folks - not a J Crew item but I am stumped nonetheless. Picked up this great knit Cartonnier blazer from a few years ago on Poshmark last week. Here it is:

So, it's a beautiful plum shade flecked with ivory; lining visible when the sleeves are rolled is mustard yellow. I'm having trouble even thinking of what neutrals to pair it with other than ivory itself. Navy? Jeans, obviously but... what else?

    1. Hi- Cool blazer! I have read that for secondary colors, you should pair with it the colors that made it. Red and blue make purple so those two should work. Now it needs to be the right shade of those colors. Burgundy, magenta, light or dark blue (even chambray) would be nice with it. Don't forget a great scarf or piles of necklaces! Agree with denim on the bottom or corduroys. Hope that gives you some ideas!

    2. Following @Barbara Meyers' good idea, you might want to look up a colorblocked silk blouse madewell did a while ago: https://www.google.com/search?q=madewell+10989&client=safari&hl=en-us&prmd=misvn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwivs_O0y4DPAhUFUBQKHYUzBd8Q_AUICCgC&biw=768&bih=928#imgrc=M_Z9V1O3NfIp5M%3A

    3. Thanks, ladies! I never thought about red or burgundy with it but it makes total sense... also like the coral!

  3. OT: sizing issues. Does anyone have the Billie crop jeans in black? I bought my size and a size down. Both fit but I prefer the slightly looser (still fitted) fit of my usual size, but not if they'll stretch out so much.
Also, tried the slingback cap toe flats in store after ordering them online and felt I needed to size up. At home, the larger size feels too big. Like a significant difference. The smaller size (same as my Gemma size) fits better, especially if the strap stretches at all. I'm going to post a pic of the Billie crop in black on my IG, @wearthislikethis.

    3. Thanks! It's funny how certain items bring back very specific memories.

    4. I was thinking about what I was wearing to work in 1996, I don't remember cropped flares, we were definitely wearing pants that were high-waisted with tapered legs. That being said, I love the crop kicks out now and just bought my first pair. I'm usually a (very) late adopter, so I feel like I'm really "jumping" on this trend!

    5. I don't know where you're located, but this was in NYC and the women I'm thinking of were definitely fashion forward. Not everyone dressed like that! it was a professional, yet very creative environment.

    6. Yeah, I'm from a government/high tech town, our idea of fashion forward in the 90s was goretex jackets!

  4. If anyone happens to have a few minutes to spare....can you comment
on the fit of the various J Crew women's button ups. I only know that I have to size up from my normal size 12
to a 14 in the perfect shirt....how does the boy shirt fit in comparison? thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Unknown, I've found that I usually size down at least one, maybe even two sizes when it comes to most Boy shirts. I'm usually a 4P in Perfect, but I'll take a 0 in Regular for Boy shirts. Same with popovers for me. Both of these have more relaxed fits than the more fitted Perfect Shirts. HTH!

    2. Hi - I'm a 12 on top and a 12 in the perfect shirts and can do a 10 or 12 in the boy shirts. The 12 will be a slightly looser fit. I'm pretty busty so it usually depends on the top - if you need to size up in the perfect shirt I'd think you could do a 12 in the boy shirt. hth!

    3. Hi, Unknown, I found the Boy Shirt, and took the time to try it on in the store. I'm a regular J. Crew 4, and the shirt was just right, from the cuffs (wrist-bone length) to the shoulders. I love it, and have worn it during the "chilly" spell here in the NC mountains.
