Tax Free Shopping Applies to J.Crew Online Too!

"Thanks!" to so many of you, including Sandy (in this post) and AppGal (in this post), who let us know that J.Crew will honor tax free shopping online. (This of course, is dependent on whether your state is offering the shopping incentive or not.)

Also, Sandy shared the following:
OK, here's the scoop on the tax-exempt weekend: JC CS says their online system should automatically deduct the sales tax for clothing being shipped to states that do this (the shipping destination is key). If it doesn't, for some reason, all you need to do is call CS, give them the order number, and they will refund the tax.

I recommend that anyone interested in taking advantage of the tax holiday find some info online on the specific restrictions for their state (I don't know if they're all the same or not.) In NC, AppGal (and as Rebecca pointed out), your total order can be whatever, but the price of an individual item cannot exceed $100. And accessories are excluded. Here's a site that lists which states have a tax-free weekend, with links to more information: http://singleparents.about.com/od/cuttingcosts/qt/TaxFreeHoliday.htm
I think it is great that J.Crew is automatically honoring tax-free shopping for customers in states running this promotion. Go J.Crew! :)

Happy {tax-free} shopping!

  1. Er, isn't it against the law to collect "tax" when no tax is due?

  2. Just placed a small order on the madras boyfriend shorts (waiting for a sale, with 20% is a decent price for a nice summer staple) and the nordic blue dream cardi (backordered till 10/11/10!) and the total was around $130. Because VA is tax free my tax was non-existent. Woohoo. Add to that the ship100 promo (I never actually saw it on IE, only ship175), I paid for the items only. So yay...I saved 20 dollars by specifically shopping today with free ship and tax free.

That said, I think it only works on items under $100 each, so those collection items aren't part of the deal. LOL. Can you even imagine a kid in school with one of those sequinned tops? (I mention school because these tax-free deals are usually tied with the back to school rush.)

  3. It is such a small amount to save in NC at around 7.75% that unless buying a lot of items don't go crazy thinking tax free is a great deal:) Just heard a radio segment about not going into stores "with an open wallet" mentality.

Big ticket items like computers that are $3,500 or less are tax free in NC this weekend. Now that is a deal:) However, I would only save about $1.50 on the two clothing items I want so will wait. Not a great deal...Ha ha:)

  4. Good to know! Tennessee's tax free weekend is just around the corner (this weekend?)

  5. Florida actually brought back tax-free weekend again this year, but it's not until the 13th.

  6. wellfedfred: Apparently, some retailers (e.g. Buy.com) issue a refund for the tax they collect on qualifying items bought online during a tax holiday. (This can take as long as a month.) They say their system isn't set up to handle this automatically... Doesn't seem to be a problem for JC.

  7. Ugh, stupid California doesn't do tax free weekend. I will just have to live vicariously through the purchases of others! :)

  9. Weird, I just never think about this. We are never taxed for clothing in MN.

  11. Has anyone else noticed that some of the new fall roll outs are ALREADY on sale? Ridiculous. JC is just training its customers to never pay full retail. I'm certainly not going to from now on.

  12. Do all stores have to do this? For example I was shopping at Anthro today and didn't get any discount even though my state is participating.

I am off to order pants from J. Crew!

  13. Hexicon, I think that's from April 2007.

  14. suzanne,
anthro email confirmations always have sales tax (even though we never have sales tax on clothing in massachusetts), but it is removed/adjusted before they actually charge you. it's very strange, but that's the way they do it. you should see that your credit card is less than the email confirmation would imply.

  15. OT - If any one has one of 20% off coupons that came with the Aug catalog and is not going to use it, I'd love to buy it from you. I have loaded my cart up and am waiting. The coupons expire on tomorrow, I think.

  16. Hi Alexis! Thanks for keeping up with blog - it's always a joy to read : )

I know many of us received a 20% Off Card in the mail (expires August 15). However, the card says that you can only use it for in store retail purchases. I e-mailed JCrew and asked if I could use it over the phone since my local store didn't carry the items I wanted. They said yes!

On the phone, I also tried to use a free shipping code, but they said that they couldn't apply two promotions. (Though they've done this for me in the past - it looks like it's really just hit or miss based on the associate you get!) Finally, I asked about the tax-free and in South Carolina for clothing, the order has to be less than $100 to count. One of my items was under $100, so I may try to get refunded later.

Just FYI - thanks to everyone else who shares!!

  17. Too bad Cali doesn't offer the tax-free! This morning jcrew had an online pop back of the Metropolitan leather ankle boots item 21188 was $265.00, now $99.99. Anyone own the cognac color? Any thoughts on the item? TIA! =)

  18. So, I'm new to the JC bloggy world and have a question. Is there any way for non-bloggers to post IRL photos? I was in the JC store today and would have taken some pics of outfits to post, but wasn't sure there was a way to do that (short of starting my own blog, that is). I find it SO helpful to see the items on actual people in untouched photos. Ideas?

  19. @Rebecca: you can email your review with photos to one of the bloggers and I'm sure one of us will be glad to post for you.

I'm fairly new so my blog is not heavily trafficked. For max. efficiency, may I suggest one of the more visited blogs volunteer?

  20. Rebecca: Feel free to email me your IRL photos. {jcrewaficionada at yahoo dot com} I can post them for you. :)
