J.Crew Spotted in People's Style Watch

A big "thanks!" to Desert Flower, who not only let us know about several J.Crew items being spotted in the September issue of People Style Watch, but also scanned the images for us to view! (Click on the images to see it larger.)Seriously, what is up with that skirt from J.Crew? The leather reminds me of a bad jacket from the 80's. And as for the style, I am not a fan of the mini that poufs out. However, I can work with it in cotton. Having it in leather just makes for a fashion disaster. Yikes!

What are your thoughts on the items featured in the magazine? Have you tried on or purchase any of the items listed here? If so, please share! :)

  1. I bought the leopard belt. I don't embrace fashion trends like leopard but I love belts! It is quite nicely made and coordinates well with many colors.

The schoolboy this year is too short for me. I ordered the velvet in a tall and am keeping my fingers crossed. Will let you know how it works out once it arrives.

have loved leather skirts for decades but am way too old for that style. with any luck they will do a leather pencil.

  2. Agree, Alexis: that skirt looks like Lederhosen for girls. Not even in the Alps.

  3. Oh but I love that Madewell velvet panel tee, even if you can probably find a $20 version at H&M (I have checked the website and is not there yet).

  4. All I can see is that J Crew is now making *pimp* hats.

  5. I am not a fan of the school boy personally. It just seems so plain. I like my Bella and several Edens b/c they are unique pieces. So glad I have them!

  6. Leopard print fedoras and poufy leather miniskirts ... my coffee is getting watered down from the tears I shed, alternately in laughter over these ludicrous items and in lament over how far this formerly fab retailer has fallen.

  7. I kinda like the poufy leather mini! I suspect, however, that it may not be the most flattering on me due to the fullness... may give it a try if it ever goes on sale.

On another note, I spotted the shearling bag that I love (but would never pay $795 for, much less support the fur industry) in September Elle this morning.

  8. LBH sorry to hear about tears while the rest of us are still chortling over your "one-time courtesy".

  9. La Belle Helene,

I have tears too over the same issue but mine are all of sadness. Boy, has JCrew fallen. I mean I used to drool and have shopping carts full and spend big bucks. But no longer...each month and each roll out equals less and less and less....

  10. @gemtwin, I agree, I would LOVE to see JCrew do a leather pencil since they do pencil skirts so well. Preferably with the same type of uber-flattering side panels & shaped seaming they used in this past spring/summer's tailored denim pencil skirt. I would so jump on that -- leather for grown-ups!

  11. OT, for ladies who need dresses for the office, AT just got some cute new items in, and they are having 30% off dresses right now. You can use code AUGUSTAFF25 on top of that for 25% off a $150 purchase (plus they are having free ship over $100), so you are basically getting just released dresses for almost 50% off (and no final sale!)

  12. Interesting article in LA Times about Ann Taylor's come back; mentions JC:

If it all sounds a bit familiar, it's because it is. Ann Taylor, like so many other retailers, is trying to pull a J. Crew — whipping up clothes that can be dressed up or down, sprinkling in an aura of affordable luxury, and a dash of ruffles and bows, in hopes that it adds up to fashion magic. "Everyone is using J. Crew's [design] themes. You're seeing it at Talbots and even Gap to a certain extent, because they are all trying to get business back. Soon Costco will be selling ruffles," Tunick says.

Of course, Ann Taylor has yet to achieve the status of J. Crew, which manages to be popular with both fashion insiders and outsiders. For one, the brand hasn't dressed Michelle Obama, though it's not for lack of trying. They have sent clothes to Obama's de facto stylist, Chicago retailer Ikram Goldman.

  13. Can't seriously say I like much of anything on those pages. Most of what I have seen for fall 2010 does not excite me so it's not just J.Crew. Total blah season offerings IMO.

The Kate Spade metallic Mary Janes remind me of J.Crew's crackle metallic Mary Janes from F/W 2008. Gigi reviewed them in this post on her wonderful Gigi's Gone Shopping blog. I have them in the sherbert color and have gotten quite a bit of wear out of them with last winter's rosebud, blushed tweed and cinnamon stick pencil skirts, among other outfits. Really pretty shoes, I am going to try them with some of the warmer tones this fall.

  14. o/t: I made some LandsEnd Canvas returns to Sears tonight and was disappointed to see a v-neck cardi with raw-edge chiffon trim. Yuck! It's the worst detail added to clothing since it frays and tiny threads fall off. Too bad they are incorporating this into their merchandise. Hopefully they won't go overboard with it. They have some nice, reasonably priced, 'basic' clothes out for fall.
