OMG - I just got a gift from J Crew - Heirloom Flora earrings. It came with a cardboard folder that says "We hope you enjoy this gift (just our little way of saying thank you)" and a card (like a rewards card) that has "a number to call your own..." and a toll-free number on it. It didn't come with free shipping, but it does say at the bottom of the folder "PS keep an eye out for emails introducing our special benefits." My husband asked "Why did they send you that?" J.Crew has sent gifts to its customers in the past, ranging from necklaces to scarves to wallets. I think it's a wonderful marketing move (to treat customers) on J.Crew's part.
