I have so many scarves from J.Crew that I could probably open my own little store with them. I find they are versatile accessories. They can be worn with almost any outfit and they can be worn in so many different ways. I typically favor wrapping a scarf around my tote. But I have worn scarves around my neck and even as a headband. I have even seen people wear a scarf around their waist.
My most recent scarf purchase is the Large printed-silk twill scarf (Item 88140) in Sand (shown in the middle of the image above). I was able to purchase this find for just $14 at a J.Crew (thanks to the additional accessories sale and student discount.) It is absolutely beautiful and the size is perfect: large enough to use as a headband, small enough to use around my neck without too much fabric.
How do you like to wear you J.Crew scarfs? What is your favorite/least favorite scarf from J.Crew? What size do you tend to prefer scarves in: small, medium, or large square? large rectangle (for example the Python print silk scarf [Item 92759] at 59 3/4"L x 16"W)?
I have been wearing scarves around my waist for the past 15+ years. I also have worn them around my neck with a classic twin set. I love the JCrew silk sashes from a few years ago...I have every color that they came out with during that fall/winter and spring/summer seasons. I am jealous of your find on the scarf you mention in sand... I have had it in my shopping bag several times but don't want to pay the $30 for it.
ReplyDeleteP.S. It's good to know that I am not the only one with too many scarves...esp. from JCrew...
ReplyDeleteI usually wear scarves around my head as a headband, but silk is slippery and tends to slide off after a while. But mostly I wear them as a belt. I still love the summer dotted swiss scarves I bought at Jcrew a few yrs ago!
ReplyDeleteAside: I have lived in the UK long enough to apply for one of my favorite stores credit cards. (I pay off the balance in full each month and use the perks to my advantage)Here are the perks: first use, 10% off purchase and $10 coupon in first statement, second use=20% off coupon, third use=free tee from store plus 2x's a year 20% off any day you want coupons, and if you order online free shipping for 60+ orders.....plus more but don't want to go on and on....
ReplyDeleteNew coupon code: STARFISH $150+ order or more through June 11
ReplyDeleteJagjag2 and Kirbydog: How long does the scarf have to be to be worn around the waist. Also do you make it look like a belt?
ReplyDeleteJagjag2: Thanks for the coupon code!
I don't know about exact length but different styles work differently...oblong work well for belts and I even let the ends hang down one side depending on the outfit. I also use large square ones "rolled" or folded up but then leave a bit of a triangle corner and put the triangle end to one side and tie on the other side of my waist....of course sometime I make them look more like a belt..I have even twisted two scarves or sashes together...My aunt works for Weekends clothing and she showed me a couple of their ideas that I have adapted as well.
ReplyDeletePS When I do the little triangle thing I fold the large square scarf into a triangle first....then roll or fold...
ReplyDeleteAlso, I meant Weekenders! sorry! If unfamiliar with the company they make knitwear and do have a website...
I have yet to buy a JCrew scarf... I think it's the whole "dry clean" thing that makes me rethink buying one. I already have two of the JCrew silk belts that I dry clean and it's pretty pricey! I find it hard to justify dry clean accessories :o)
ReplyDeleteHas anyone used Dryel on any of their silk accessories? I'd be willing to do that if I know it won't ruin the silk.
Love scarves - I have also worn a scarf as a halter top to a dressy event - or you could put a cardigan with it. (This is with the large Hermes that I have done this) - you knot the reverse side exactly in the middle and then tie two ends around your neck and the other two around your waist... makes a beautiful, drapey halter top.
ReplyDeletePS This is such a great blog! I am also a big sale/online J Crew shopper and really appreciate all the tips and info!
Re cleaning scarves: I've successfully handwashed not only my silk JCrew scarves but Hermes scarves as well. Here's my technique: fill sink with cold/cool water and add a capful of detergent (I use Woolite). Swish scarves around in water for a few minutes (I pretreat stains first by wetting them and rubbing in a little detergent on the stain with my finger) and then rinse thoroughly (I rinse three times, emptying and filling the sink with fresh water). Occasionally I add starch to one of the rinses to give the scarf some heft. Roll scarf in a towel for about thirty minutes, then you must iron while the scarf is damp on the iron's silk setting.

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your tip! I'll have to remember it if I ever decide to get a silk scarf :o)
Btw, I've never seen Hermes scarves so I had to look them up. They're gorgeous! Do they ever go on sale? I can't really justify spending $355 on a scarf...
Jagjag2: Thanks for explaining. That helps a lot! :)
ReplyDeleteAmy J & Cashmerelibrarian: also thanks for the styling tip!
I have to admit I love the scarves too. I normally shave my head in the summer time, and those silk scarves make really nice head kerchiefs. Thank goodness for the internet, b/c I don't think I would have the courage to be browsing through the female stuff in the stores.
ReplyDeleteAbijah: you are too funny about the "courage" in stores. :) Do you find that the silk scarves stay in place well? I had a friend who had a hard time finding scarves that would.
ReplyDeleteSue.bee: Sadly Hermes scarves do not go on sale (well, typically: the NYC and Paris stores have special sales once or twice a year; I've never been to one). However, eBay's a fun place to find vintage scarves (although they're not really cheap, either)!
ReplyDeleteHi Alexis,
ReplyDeleteI am ordering that scarf in the middle picture like yours this morning....it went down to $16.
