J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Yesterday I was annoyed because a $$$ pair of jeans I ordered was now 40% off and they shipped last Saturday so weren't eligible for PA. guess what? This morning they popped back and I ordered them at 40% off. Makes me feel bad, but...better the $ in my pocket. Actually, I really didn't want to pay the higher price so had I not gotten them reduced I would have returned.

I've learned from other JCAs to actually order items I'm interested in trying since many of them are not in store. I'm also trying to order multiple sizes, especially of pants, because even if they "fit" sometimes you actually prefer them to be a little looser or a little more fitted. So, yesterday I ordered two different kinds of chinos in three different sizes. Hoping to keep one. I did the same with the field mechanic jacket. Many people said to size down but it was too skimpy like that. I actually sized up TWO sizes and the fit is exactly what I wanted.

  2. The Schoolboy remains my favorite fit for J. Crew blazers so I'm thankful I can still get them at Factory. Factory Reviews:

SCHOOLBOY BLAZER IN LINEN-COTTON in FRENCH BLUE: perfect fit in my usual size. Beautiful color and nice fabric: 55% linen and 45% cotton, nice tortoise buttons.

GINGHAM SCHOOLBOY BLAZER in PINK: just a touch large in my usual size. If I had been in store, I would have tried another of the same size or one size down. Same nice fabric: 55% linen and 45% cotton, nice tortoise buttons as the French Blue.

POLKA-DOT TEDDIE SWEATER - the dots are embroidered on the front only (no dots on the back). The sweater is lightweight and will be great for spring/summer or for under blazers. Teddie sweater has a bit of a relaxed fit. Personally, I take the same size as I do in the Tippi but the fit is more generous in the Teddie - you could size down for a more fitted look.

WINNIE PANT IN STRETCH TWILL: fit perfectly in my most typical pants size. The Winnie is an alternative to the Minnie. I think the ankle opening is slightly larger, which I like. I should have compared the fabric content but it felt the same to me. I got the coral color - great for spring! This is my first pair of Winnies and will likely get more since the Minnie is no longer available.

STRIPED STUDIO T-SHIRT: great basic t-shirt. Runs a little small. I sized up and like the fit. It is lightweight but not super sheet. I got the caribbean lime color - very nice!

    1. I'm also glad the schoolboy is still sold! I tried the Winnies a few years ago and found the fabric to be really stiff and not like the Minnies I already had. But this was a while ago. I actually bought Banana Republic sloans a while ago to replace my navy minnies and find them a pretty good sub-a little less tapered at the ankle but still cropped and skinny leg. -lep33shops

  3. Is anyone STILL having problems with the website? I was browsing the site this morning looking for something to buy @ 40% off. The site was so slow and took so long to load, I ended up with only one item. And since I don't want to pay shipping on multiple orders (because I am afraid my cart will sell out), I have stopped looking. Pocketbook is happy but I'm not too thrilled...Ugh!

    1. Same on my iPhone. Same problem too at Madewell's site.

    2. Try clearing your browser and then restart your device. Worked for me!

    3. It started doing that to me yesterday. Ages to load and weird glitches. It's working a bit better today, but something is definitely still going on

    4. For me, both desktop and mobile (iPhone & iPad) are slow to not moving at all. I gave up yesterday and tried again this morning with the same problem.

    5. I've been having a hard time too the past couple of days. The site is so slow or freezes - both on iPad and my iPhone. I've also been having a hard time getting sephoras site to work properly.

  4. Do the Gemma pointy toe flats feel like walking on a piece of paper? They look really cute, and are on promo + 40% off in the lovely blue color, but I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle to add inserts for foot/arch support and also potentially have a 2nd sole added to the bottom at the cobbler.

    1. I walk all over in the gemmas and don't have a problem with them. I'd say they are about as hard as the sloans and ceces, so if you don't like them, you won't like these either? -lep33shops

    2. The Gemma are alright, but I prefer the Cece as it is more comfortable for all day wear. I think it is because they have a slight wedge insert, where as the gemma are completely flat. For me this makes so much difference. The Gemma aren't uncomfortable, but I never reach for them because they just aren't flexible and I feel like they will flop off even when I size down.

    3. Agree, Gemmas have no support.

  5. I got those collection full length trousers in pink about a week ago. There was limited quantity and they sold out at FP. I'm guessing there will be popbacks. I returned mine because they ran small in the waist/hips and were much wider leg than they appeared in the stock photos. I believe they are photo shopping the stock photos of all the wide leg pants to make them look slightly more normal, then when you get them they look a lot bigger. I am tall and can do a bit of a wide leg but I'm not on the super wide leg trend bandwagon.

    1. Oh, how sneaky and disappointing! Those pants looked very luxe and pretty, with their silky look. That's pretty crappy if they're photoshopping this stuff!

re) Gemmas -- I only have two pairs (leopard from last year, striped pair from last spring), but I'm able to wear them to and fro work comfortably. I have an office job so I'm not on my feet that much during the day. I don't wear my two pairs all that often, so the sole is doing fine for now (owned for about a year), but I could see how it might wear out quicker than most with frequent use. I agree that the sole is VERY thin, but for me personally, I don't feel any discomfort or a need for inserts, though I could see how some might benefit from one, especially if there are arch issues. HTH!

  7. Picked up Colledtion leather sheath dress with ruffles. This was on my radar during fall release & picked up as a popback. It's 40% off sale & was eligible for PA, so great price. The fit is tts & the leather is lovely. I'm not typically a fan of ruffles, but they're well done & add a very nice detail. Length is just above my knees, so it's still work appropriate; length was one of my concerns @ 5.8. Can be worn with heels like Collection Ratti fruity floral Lena pumps or a pointed toe flat like Valentino t strap rock studs.

  8. Does anyone know when the next big rollout is online?

    1. Good to know because Nordstrom already has a lot of new J.Crew stuff on their website that the J.Crew website doesn't have yet

  9. Very OT, but for all the issues with the JCrew website, shipping, etc., it sure beats Anthro these days. Last night I put some sale item in my cart, checked out, and at the final stage when I clicked Place Order, everything was suddenly Out of Stock. Yet today, all f those items are still showing as available. I was so disappointed, and now so mad.

    1. It's because the item would ship from a store outside of your country. Which means if you're in Canada and the item is in a USA store, it will show as OOS during checkout, and vice versa. I wish they had a better way to show this!!

    2. Thanks, Roxy! I was using a US shipping address, so maybe I'll try with my home address. It would be much easier if they'd tell me that instead of the generic out of stock msg.

  10. I hadn't ordered the striped sweater skirt and it arrived with a dark mark on the front. The store director at my local store offered to pay for it to be dry cleaned. After 2 cleanings, the mark is much, much smaller but I can still see it. Ugh. I'm going to try it on one more time but it's one of those things that will just bug me. This might be a return. Otherwise it's a beautiful skirt! Long enough for my 5'10 self, not see through, and flattering.

  11. I stopped by a Factory store in my travels yesterday and tried on the Ruffle-Sleeve T-Shirt. I want to try the bell-sleeve style this Spring but most of the styles are a little too voluminous and I really don't need bulk in the upper arms! This one is the one for me. It's a nice weight cotton, the sleeves are a moderate ruffle that look very cute on. It's a bit boxy and on the shorter side, which I really like because it's not overwhelming on my 5'4" frame.

Cute colors - black stripe, navy stripe, solids white and black. It's also a great price online right now. Check it out if you want to try the style but think one of the shift dresses might be too short or too much "look" for you.

  12. I'm a VERY longtime lurker, but I went to my B&M the other day and was so bummed about the fit on some things I was sure would be a slam dunk. I tried on the New Perfect Fit TShirt in my standard size (M), and while I could see the sleeve length being great for some people under blazers and cardigans, it hit right at the center of my chest. So, when my arms were at my sides, all I could see was how, um, busty, I looked (in fairness, I wear a 32E, but it was just such a strange symmetry that I can't bring myself to get one). The Beaded lemons t-shirt, in contrast, ran big. A small swam on me. Finally, the Skinny Stretch Cargo Pants were another big miss. What stretch? I tried my typical 6, and the waist fit fine, but my legs immediately turned into sausages trying to bust out of their casings. Not good.

    1. @Brita, I had the sausage casings issue with those same pants. Disappointing. I felt like She-Ra (& not in a cool 'girl power' way, but in a 'roided up bodybuilder' way. Not a good look, to say the least. What was really disappointing is that I have those same pants from last year's version (same size, sans zippers), just wore the Pesto version today in fact, and they have flattering stretch and fit comfortably. Sigh. Don't get me started on how button-down shirts fit everywhere except the armpits.

Sorry about the Perfect Shirt issue. Disappointing when something you can count on surprises you, for the worse.

    2. I have that problem with many pants and sizing up doesn't help because they just get baggy in the crotch and butt. I tried on the distressed lookout Highrise in black and felt like garbage. For the most part I've been avoiding skinny pants because of this. It's not a size thing, just proportion.

      Delete
    3. @Suz Has, YES!!! That's exactly what happened to me with these pants. My usual size gave me the tight Wrestling pants look so I tried a size up and while those were more relaxed through the leg, thigh and waist, they were baggy in the crotch/stomach area, as well as the butt. They looked awful. Bummer!

      Delete
    4. @tm93,I wish I could understand why they don't work for me. I don't think of my thighs as particularly big for my size. I'm proportionate, not straight. They're either made for women with bigger butts/hips and skinny legs or women who don't have defined waists. Either way, no big deal because plenty of other stuff DOES work for me but it's just bizarre.

  13. Stopped in at my local store today, no % off sale, but it didn't matter as everything I tried was a flop:
Mermaid tippi: I really love the print, but that ruffle was a show-stopper for me

Ornate floral tie-waist skirt: Fit was TTS for me (12), but as it's high-waisted it wouldn't work for me as I'm thick through the middle and can't wear things tucked in. Very pretty though, and while it was more muted than I'd like, I'd still buy it in a regular pencil skirt.

Silk top in vintage floral: I loved the print, and was okay with the silk weight/texture though many reviewers panned it. Fit seemed TTS (they only had a 10, which was too small, but I would expect the 12 to fit) but I'd want something cut a little longer.

Drake bell-sleeve top in giraffe: Fit was TTS in 12 for me, though it fit closer through the body than I expected. Length was okay, and the bell sleeves, while not my favourite, were something I'd be willing to compromise on. However, I wasn't even tempted at full price, the top just didn't wow me enough to justify the cost.
