J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. New arrivals w GETSHOPPING promo @ 25% off.

Wow. J.Crew has scaled back their production; small roll-out. When will we see what was shown on nyfw last September? Have they slowly been releasing stuff?

I ordered the Merci B tee, Safari jacket in green, and gathered popover shirt.

  2. Hi JSR - I know in the past they've trickled out NYFW stuff all the way to July, but it seems like most of the stuff they showed has not come out yet (link if anyone needs a refresher). It looks like they've only released the paint-splattered stuff and a couple of tops?

    1. Hope everyone in the NE is staying safe & warm!
@JSR, cute choices! I also ordered the jacket in khaki to try. Wish Merci tee was in navy like NYFW.
@silver_lining Thanks for the reminder! They've released pants (white wide legs ones which are mostly sold out and pink ones, sold out too), sequin stripe skirt & the cotton shirt dress and stripe tulle shirt both of which were part of NAP collab. Sale section had an update so able to order nude patent criss cross sandals.

    2. The tie-waist thomas mason shirt dress was just released also but in khaki, not blue (you may have to search for it on the site) and they release the very messy ruffled thomas mason white button up top as well. I can't tell if the ruffles come that messy or if they intentionally made them like that for styling purposes. Those pink pants IRL look much more like the NYFW photos than in the model/catalog photos--i.e. very wide leg IRL. That's why I returned them. They looked a lot nicer in the catalog.

  3. The only thing I am slightly interested in is the berry Tippi - but I think I'd need a large & it's already sold out. Womp-womp. This is the 3rd or 4th rollout now that I have been less than impressed with - I am starting to wonder, "Is it me?"

    1. Taylor, are you talking about the s/s Tippi in the stripe/berry print? It looks like there's a full size run online. I thought you meant there was a berry colored Tippi, and I got excited at that prospect...haha.

    2. Not really interested in anything either. I wanted the New York sweatshirt and my VPS has her eyes out for me, but it's already sold out so I'm not getting my hopes up too much. I also ordered a new bathing suit top and a pair of martie pants but those have been sitting there a while. Nothing from new arrivals.

    3. yup, nothing that interests me either - just basic, basic items that I do not need. I usually love spring items because there's pretty flowers and appliques and bows and ribbons but ....nothing so far this year. it's not you haha!

    4. It's always nice to see new things, but I agree -- nothing here I have to have. I'm still (mostly) shopping my closet, 2.5 months in and only 3 purchases in 2017. My wallet is happy.

    5. @Anne - weird, they only had XS, S & M this morning when I looked around 6am or so! Hum. Still waffling - don't know how much I'd wear it; I wish they had done it in a cotton blend, 3/4-sleeve. I really miss the linen Tippi & the Factory cotton Charley sweaters. Those are workhorses for me when it's warm outside but chilly in the office!

    6. Taylor: it's not you! It's me, too. I would buy a sleeveless silk shell in a pretty print in a heartbeat but I haven't seen a good one in a long time. My 3 month self-imposed shopping ban is almost over and I haven't felt like I missed out on anything yet... lep33shops

    7. No, it's not you. Jcrew has been ho-hum for over a year now.

    8. Definitely NOT you! I went through that new catalog so fast! Straight to the recycle bin it went. Honestly, they have not been showing anything I am in love with for quite some time. It looks like things I already have. For that matter, neither has Anthro. Not sure where to shop right now. Can't afford designer so it appears there is no where to go. My wallet is happy but my closet is sobbing!

  4. I am into the bandana print but only because I am going to Japan in a week and it looks more "cherry blossom" to me than bandana. Might order the scarf for a pop of color to wear with my trench/jacket and the tee. The rest is making me yawn...

    1. Same here, Ema. A lot of yawns (literally) with the time change, too! 😴

  5. I like the striped sailor dress with the button cuffs, Nordstrom has had it for a few weeks, but not in petite. With the cute cuffs I had hoped for a petite size, otherwise the sleeves might be too long. Nothing else I need to have.

  6. The only thing I liked in the catalog is the New York sweatshirt and it's not online. Anyone know why?

    1. Hi Mo - I liked it too...it's a men's item that has been out for a while and is currently sold out (link here). Hopefully, it will probably show up on the site in a few days.

    2. Thanks so much for the information. What a bummer, though.

  7. Cute stuff in new roll out...love the berry print and that t shirt with the puff sleeves....

  8. I hate to say it Ema but I agree a bit. So far I've only bought the liberty lady jacket and a pair of earrings this spring. My closet is crammed full so that is the reason I am not looking too hard, but usually by this time in the season I have so many things on my wish list.

    1. My closet is full as well and I am still doing a good job making only thoughtful purchases. I agree that by now I would usually have a ton on my wish list and barely have anything on it and nothing is a must have. Mostly tops that I can mix in with items in my closet. I wish listed the ruffle chambray skirt but I am afraid this will be a one season thing hence not sure if I really want it.

    2. @Shooping Celle - I've definitely also been less than excited with the roll outs lately. There's been a few cute items that I like, but I haven't fallen head over heels with anything (with the exception of my paint splatter chambray) for a few months.

@JessF I've got that same skirt on my list but I was having trouble justifying it for the same reason!

    3. Whoops... Shopping Celle, not Shooping 🙈

  9. I've been mostly shopping sale popbacks as I haven't seen much in the new arrivals that are must haves. Every year I buy warm weather stuff while the snow is still flying and don't wear it for months. I did order the zip front sleeveless dress in navy to get an idea of sizing and the lace up front t-shirt in ivory. I can't decide if I'm on board with this trend but I keep seeing it on others and like it so I'm going to try it. I personally can't get in to the fruit prints but I think I'm in the minority here.

My store is doing a new rollout event on Saturday so I will stop in to check things out in person. I do like the polka dot skirt and the stripe bell sleeve top and hoping to try those this weekend.

  11. End-of-season follow up on the Holly sweater: I'm not shy about washing wool sweaters in the machine, and rarely have issues with shrinking. But instead of shrinking, my Holly sweater grew! It's now a good inch, maybe inch-and-a-half longer. I actually prefer the extra length, and the sweater looks good as new otherwise!

    1. Good to know about the Holly sweater. I like to wash my wool sweaters too. If JCrew brings it back this year(and doesn't change it). I will buy one!

  12. Lots of cute things, but no must-haves for me (trying to slow down shopping, etc.) I had pre-ordered the Linen Perfect Shirt in Leopard with Nordstroms a few weeks ago, so will see how that works out.

  13. A couple of items caught my eye: Dramatic Sleeve sweater in cotton, Ruffle top in clip-dot, Irish linen popover and perfect shirts, Garment dyed trench dress, Safari shirt-jack.

    1. @maryeb, I do like that Ruffle top, but I have so many similar tops already. I also liked that garment-dyed trench dres, but wish it didn't flare out and I'm also wondering about length (the Petite seems quite long at 39".) Can't wait to hear feedback on some of these pieces!

    2. I ordered the Irish linen popover in a few colors to try. Also ordered the Garment Dyed Safari Shirt Jacket in Faded Teak.

    3. @maryeb I just bought the dramatic sleeve cotton sweater and will review it (and lots of other new arrivals) in a little while.

    4. Thanks so much for reviewing all those new arrivals @Ina.
Did you get the dramatic sleeve sweater one size down? I'm trying to decide if I should go one or two sizes down. Thanks again!

    5. I got it one size down, but I think if we had the xxxs in store I would have gone down two. HTH

    6. @maryeb and @Ina Mack, I'm thinking of trying that Dramatic Sleeve Sweater as well. It's the sort of thing I would wear a lot and would replace some worn-out whites. I'm interested in your reviews. Thanks for the sizing heads-up, Ina. I don't enjoy too loose a fit.

Otherwise I'm liking the Irish linen pop over and the linen striped pants. I fear the latter wouldn't exactly be flattering on me, though. Not much else is appealing to me right now. Just some other sale items. I'm glad I just caught the summerweight sweater in neon peach- it's very nice and pretty for spring with other layers.

  14. I tried the on-sale broken-in boyfriend chinos in the light khaki color. I'm not usually a chino girl but I saw these styled a few ways I really liked. Reviews said they ran big so I ordered 3 sizes, my smaller, most typical and a size up because I knew I wanted them slouchy. I loved them sized up, but the color is too close to my skin tone (which makes me feel naked from the waist down). I highly recommend them sized up for a cool slouch, if the color works for you. They're a very good price and available in many Sizes.

  15. I really liked the rollout in February and got several items ( the sunset embellished Jackie, the giraffe top, the martie cotton pants, the chambray scalloped skirt, the v neck stripe cotton sweater). Caught the embroidered flats on pop back and hoping they will fit. Otherwise waiting for the boatneck denim top/skirt combo from fashion week - and maybe that pink embellished skirt as well if it's not crazy expensive.

    1. I really like the denim top and skirt combo too. I thought this might be the skirt, but now I don't think so. Anyone know??

      Delete
    2. No the skirt looks like a true denim, and has seams down the front. the ruffle skirt is a chambray. It just may not be released yet. I bet if you emailed a VPS they'd be able to get you the release date.

  16. I bought the Maddie wool pants in October. Three wears in and it's starting to pill on the legs. Anyone else experience this with the Maddie.

    1. No, but every item of clothing I purchased from J. Crew from fall and winter looked like a rag after a few wearings. I regret every single purchase, even things that were marked down to less than $30. Which is why I have not purchased a J. Crew item in three months. I'm so over them. Almost over Madewell, too, as they used to have good quality clothing and now things I've purchased have rips in the seams and pills.

      Delete
    2. I stopped buying clothing from Madewell for the same reason. Their sweaters and sweater dresses pill so much so I avoid them altogether.

    3. Beverly and cmg, I've often thought that this is a big reason J Crew has lost so much business. Quality means garments that last beyond a few wears and that survive laundering, and they talk about it but don't deliver. I know that standards and expectations for garment quality vary but many JCAs have beloved 10 year old items that ate in better condition than what they purchased two months ago.

    4. Yes! I just received a 2007 JC cotton sweater jacket from eBay that looks brand new. Can't say that my purchases from the last year look as nice. I ordered a lot to try in the beginning of January with the after-holiday sales but kept very little because I didn't know how it would hold up to wear/wash. The knit leggings in zebra print (F8585) now look pretty ratty after a few wearings.

  17. While I'm not crazy about everything, I am seeing glimmers of hope in this new roll out. Glimpses of classic-ness. Less crazy trend chasing - off-the shoulder non-sense not withstanding.

I went to my store today, and came home with the Garment-dyed trench dress in 'golden tea' (tan). For me, this looks like a great classic piece, with lots of laying/multi season possibilities. (It also makes me nostalgic for this great a-line, huge-buttons-down-the-entire-length-of-it chino maxi skirt from The Limited that I owed circa 1994.) I'm a pretty consistent 12 on top, 14 on bottom, and I bought the 12. It fits in a tailored way on the top, and still has lots of room at the hips - girls that are straighter shaped might find there to be too much volume at the hips. The material is nice, weighty, stretchy chino - the kind of fabric that they made 'summer weight' chinos out of about 10 years ago. It's also long - I'm 5'4", and it comes to the bottom of my knees.

I also came home with the sailor pant in heavy linen in navy. These are TTS, but quite stretchy. The side zipper drives me nuts, but the front buttons are also functional, so you can use your preferred entry method. They are wearable wide leg (not clownish, the way, say, the net-a-porter wide legs were); not as wide as the striped sailor wide leg. They are also not as high-rise as the striped sailor pants, but they are still high. Overall, I found them very flattering, even in the tummy and hip area, on my curvy self. They came to the high ankle on me, in the regular length.

  18. I just received a loft dress that did not work out so I ordered 3 tshirts from the crew. The heels on fire, merci, and elephant tee. Hoping they are not too clingy and a substantial cotton.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I ordered the cream espadrilles and the knotted slides in dark amber. I need a dressier sandal option than my flip-flops that are still comfy and casual. Hoping at least one of these work!

I also saw a woman wearing the Liberty Lady with dark jeans, a white tee, and heels and she looked amazing. I'm debating if I should order in these last remaining minutes of the 25% off...

  20. The greenish Maddie cotton pants in tall arrived last night. I got the tall 0. I like the fit well enough, even I know that it is quite stretchy and it might go looser with wear, but it was the smallest size available. Length wise, I fold in about 1.5 inch in for the proper full length. Now, I'm hoping after throwing it in the washer, it might shrink a little.

The only odd thing is the button at the back pocket. I only see 1 button, and thought it's missing another, went back and check the jcrew picture and see that it is suppose to be like that.

That's it. I've received all the 3 items I got from the sale last week, keeping one, and return 2 (Teddie pants)
