"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. A decent sale update this morning, plus 40% off sale. New arrivals at Factory also including the chevron dress from last year. I wonder if the V neck is as low, that was the deal breaker for me. Also the capped sleeve stripe dress they just re-released on the main site, not in petite though which is a little annoying.

  2. Wish the 2 things I want to order would be included in the promo, the gingham sundress and the gazebo pants . Wonder how long I should wait?

  3. Usually I have no trouble with price adjustments. Usually CS understands that when a price is adjusted, the tax, if any, is adjusted, or comes off entirely if the new price of the item is below the minimum for the tax to apply, which in my state is $110 per item of apparel. Usually I'm not told that JC doesn't refund or adjust taxes and the customer has to apply to the state. I will spare you the balance of the discussion. Beware the Ides of April.

And moving along, when you get a "one-time courtesy," can you ever get another or is that a lifetime ban? I'm re-buying several things that were "shipped" at the tail end of March and are now drastically marked down, because the time between shipping and this a.m. was over 7 days, and I have already had my "one-time courtesy," Thus JC is picking up shipping costs twice. I return in-store, so no cost there, except the waste of my time.

And - the vent continues - why is it not possible to connect a specific sale or order to an entry in the "account activity" section of the JC credit card site? That would be a real advantage to having the JC card.

    1. @WFF, hopefully more experienced JC shoppers than me will chime in with advice re) the 'one-time courtesy' issue, but I once called for a 'beyond the PA window' and the CS rep said something along the lines of, 'well, you haven't had one this year' or some such, so this gave me the impression that it might a 'calendar issue', that perhaps JC granted shoppers this courtesy about once a year. I feel like I've read of experiences with other JCAs being granted a little more leeway from time to time (i.e, more than once a year) so perhaps it's worth a call-back to CS? Good luck either way, curious to hear what others' experiences might be.

I'm annoyed on your behalf reading about that tax issue w/ the PA!! That's really frustrating and again, I might call again -- sometimes you'll get a more understanding CS rep. (Something similar happened to me with Madewell recently -- the first rep. didn't want to give me a PA, but when i called back later and spoke to a different rep, they went ahead and did it.)

      Grrrrr!

    2. Thanks, TM93, I actually 1) delivered a brief but pungent lesson in tax collection including the penalties for wrongful collection, and then after I was assured of my (rightful) reimbursement, checked with my accountant, who said to call her after tax season but BTW people with that lady's grasp of taxation are good for business. Whose business, you ask? My accountant's, of course.

So having had enough Adventures in Dummland for one morning, I just reordered my markdown. I'm still curious about that "one-time" business, though.

    3. wellfedfred, I usually do just that - reorder and return the previous order. Can't deal with the smug "one time courtesy" speech.

    4. Wellfedfred, you are more patient than I. I've given up having taxes adjusted when I'm granted a PA-my blood pressure just couldn't take those round-and-round discussions any more. On the (exceedingly rare) occasion I get a PA and notice the tax was also adjusted, I do a silent fist pump in gratitude to the CSA smart enough to grasp the concept. And I don't think the 'one time courtesy' line is anything official-I think they are encouraged to say it to discourage us from asking the next time.

    5. I've re-bought before, but not in these exact circs. To be precise, the time gap was 12 days from the date shown as the ship date, but only 8 days from the date that UPS actually picked up the merch. I don't think I should be penalized for the time the thing sat waiting on JC's loading dock. However, not the mountain...

As to the sales tax, however, our rate in NYC is 8.875%. That can add up fast. Grrr.

  4. The issue I have with JCREW is that I can not seem to get a catalog, unless I go in the store. I always thought that if you have an active JCREW account you would get the automatically.

  6. This is a Madewell rant ...I've noticed a few reviews calling them out on using bonded leather instead of genuine leather for bags and shoes. I kind of believe it as they claim the material is leather but not "100% genuine leather ". All my recent shoe purchases have smelled of plastic. I think I'm ready to break up with Madewell.

  7. Anyone know what "open" status on an order means? Ordered one item on Monday and it sits at released/open status. Wondering if I will ever get my order . . .
