Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Gap has a "Perfect Oxford" dot shirt in blue that's very much like the Oxford boyshirt in polka dot. I have them both. The gap version is of softer cotton, more relazed. The Jc version is more structured, stiffer cotton. The fit of the Gap shirt is consistent with the Boyshirt.

    1. Thanks for this. I live the boy shirt fit but hate the limited options in that cut.

  2. Sounds like Kate Spade is launching a lower-priced line that "looks a lot like J.Crew"!

  3. Boden started their end of season sale on Sunday. This was a very good fall/winter for Boden, so not a tremendous amount left, but there are always popbacks. :) Some of the Limited Edition line is on super sale, so if you prefer that line, you may be in luck.

I did many reviews (and I linked to the sale) in this post. http://mysuperfluities.blogspot.com/2012/12/boden-weekly-review-roundup-before-sale.html

    1. Okay I just checked Boden's US website and there were a lot of popbacks as of twenty minutes ago. I think if there was something that got away, there is a *chance* it may be back. Good luck!

  8. Land's End Canvas is offering 55% off of men's and women's sweaters. There was a pretty nice selection of sweaters, especially for the men.

  9. Hope no one will mind me reposting a question about Ralph Lauren Rugby and Jack Wills here.

As some of you know, Rugby will be shutting down entirely in February. I felt absolutely devastated when I heard the news: since 2008, I've bought almost 90% of my clothes there especially when I realized that the quality was very comparable to the RL Blue Label and pre-2008 J. Crew--lots of wool/alpaca, wool/cashmere and wool/angora mixes for considerably less. Great craftsmanship too. Teamed with my RL Collection shoes and accessories, my Rugby jackets, coats, and sweaters make me feel like a million bucks.

I suppose I could return to Blue Label, but I know I will feel "ripped off."

Lauren, which is most similar in price to Rugby, just does not do it for me as it's always struck me as dowdy and not very well made. Denim and Supply does not do it either as it shares similar quality issues. And Club Monaco just isn't my style.

The closest alternative I've found so far is Jack Wills. Their jackets look elegant, yet up-to-date. Does anyone know if the sizes are similar? It's confusing because it's a British brand which run numerically higher (i.e., a US 6 = UK 10 or even 12)

    1. I can vouch for Jack Wills. Their quality is very good--much better than dear J Crew. Their "loungewear" is especially good. I take a 2 or XS in J crew. At Jack Wills I take a US 6/ UK 10.

    2. Thank you for that information. Do you have any of their crew neck sweaters? I really want the one with the pheasant, but I don't know what size to buy. I wear a 2 in JC, but opt for a small in the Tippi. Any guess what size would be appropriate at JW? I'm guessing a 4 or 6? TIA!

    3. Thanks for the heads up, Amy! I am liking those Sedburgh cables and the Hensingham cardigan. (Oh, and the Hudswell slouch knit...)

    4. I agree with Amy based on a tip from another JCA I purchased one of their shirts and love it. Really nice quality, lots of really nice details on the shirt and a card with two replacement buttons. May sound silly but these are substantial buttons, not ones that will chip in one washing. Plus the shirt was on sale but by the time it shipped it was reduced by another $10 which they gladly refunded to me. I wear a small or 6 in shirts (don't like tight) at J Crew and took a UK-12 US-8 at Jack Willis. HTH

  11. I know it's not J. Crew but Madewell had this calf hair polka-dot belt (#36615) for $48, that's sadly now sold out.
I bought it and absolutely love it, as does my sis who is threatening to steal it away. In an attempt to keep mine, I was searching for a close copy and found a surprisingly very similar version at the Gap. I bought two. One to compare to the Madewell version and one for her.
As I was looking for the link to post here this afternoon, the belt has up and disappeared from Gap's website search. I'm not sure that it's sold out but I found it through my order history.

Long story short, if anyone is looking for the Madewell, you might want to give Gap a try.

  14. Can anyone comment on jcrew school boy blazer versus gap blazers? Price difference is only about $30 but is the quality if jcrew much better? Thank you for your input

  16. I have a review of the Mossimo Supply Co. Kaelyn Ankle Boot from Target here on my blog today. They remind me quite a bit of the Aggie suede ankle boots from J.Crew.

  17. Was running thru Sears to get to another store and I spotted ALL Lands End shoes/boots are 60% off in store. I tried on a pair of boots that caught my eye (of course) - they are the Blakely Riding Boots. LOVE! I got them for $100 - regularly $250. They only had the Hazelnut - but you can check out the other colors online. I usually wear 10.5 but size 10 fit. I don't have tiny calves and the regular fit fine. They also have a zip!! I cannot get boots on that do not zip up. Love them - highly recommend you check them out if you go by a Sears :)

  18. A tip for the ladies in New York - there's an Alice & Olivia sample sale running through Saturday at 260 Fifth and it is by far the best sample sale I have ever shopped. Absolutely no wait to get in, plenty of room to move around, loads of merchandise from the current collection in perfect condition - plus two racks of dresses and pants labeled as one-size samples and priced at $49 - and extremely organized with big signs clearly indicating which racks hold which sizes. I love A&O but it's normally WAY out of my price range, even on sale, so this was like heaven for me. Today was the first day of additional markdowns; coats currently retailing for $898 are $259, dresses are $109 I believe, embellished dresses are $159, skirts are $69, embellished skirts (sequins, etc.) are $89, all shoes are $69, belts are $19, and I think the tops are between $59 and $79. Massive selection. I expect that by Saturday items will be marked down even further and there will still be a big selection to choose from, unlike the last JC sample sale which I went to on the last day and couldn't find anything but a Jackie pullover for $17.50 which was covered in lint (easily removed but not necessarily what you want to see at the time of purchase). One additional tip - the sizing of A&O merchandise is so weird, kinda like the opposite of J.Crew's vanity sizing, but fortunately there is plenty of room to try things on! Not sure if there are any other A&O fans out there, but if so, I hope this helps!

  20. Rugby just started a final sale with an extra 40% off: prices are as marked. There's free shipping if you spend over $125.

I bought the tartan jacket, the light gray piped jacket, the Aran zip up and ruffled fair isle sweaters. There's tons more I want, but thankfully they were out of my size or it was no longer available (e.g., the light purple wool jacket).
