Sneak Peek Inside J.Crew's January 2013 Style Guide

"Thanks!" to JBlogs (in this post), who let us know about a few images from J.Crew's January 2013 Catalog appearing on J.Crew's 770 blog. The following is from their "Travel Notes: Up, Up and Away" post:
For our January Style Guide, we traveled 2,238 miles from New York to White Sands National Monument in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
Our crew included nine production assistants, a photographer, a model, a weather girl and, yes, even a balloon meister. here, a behind-the-scenes look at our cover shoot—by the numbers.

The latest new arrivals, which include the clothes featured above, are already available in today's update (refer to the "J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!" post).

Wait, there's more! There are some more images of the catalog available over at J.Crew's website. A few are posted below for convenience:

I have to admit, the latest catalog does look beautiful. The simple backdrop, with a scattering of brightly colored hot air balloons, is lovely.

However, I am not excited about the the styling of the outfits. Although I do think many of the individual pieces look quite nice. I am sure I will change my mind once I see it on a store mannequin. ;)

What are your thoughts on the upcoming catalog? Do you like the outfits featured in the catalog?

  1. I don't even bother looking to the 'Style Guide' for styling inspiration. I just consider the pieces as individual items. I like the look of this catalog. I love the brightness & white space. It also looks like they didn't go crazy with the Photoshop filters and perhaps we're seeing close to accurate colors. I sure hope that's the case.

    1. Gigi, you are so right! The style guide is no longer a true style guide. It was, back when it was called a "catalog". ;)

    2. JCAs are my 'Style Guides" now. I love reading and seeing how you guys are styling your clothes. I can't count the number of items that I have purchased because a JCA looked so awesome in it.
That said I love the sqeuin houndstooth skirt/striped tee combo in the 3rd pic. I know that it's been done before but as with polka dots, the stripes always get me.

    3. I love that look too. I wish they would have done that houndstooth skirt without the sequins. It is so gorgeous.

  4. It never would occur to me to do a button down shirt (sleeves rolled) with shorts. Ill be doing that this spring!

    1. I did that over our honeymoon! Paired the polka dot popover and chambray popover with the 5 inch chino shorts in burgundy and Caribbean green: love the j crew styling ideas :)

    2. I love doing this! J. Crew Factory does a camp shirt in cotton voile that is excellent for wearing with the 5" chino shorts in warm weather. I love the look in the catalog above with the lime green shorts and the circle dot top, love the metallic woven belt with this too - I want the whole outfit. I love the abstract diamond beach cover-up with the white jeans/pants too, but I may try this pattern in the shirt instead of the cover-up.

There is a lot I like in this catalog. The metallic sandals look great.

  5. I stopped by my B&M today and was able to get a copy. Very pretty shots, but not too many things I have to have. Was told the rest of the new arrivals would be in store tomorrow.

  6. Can someone tell me what if any difference there is between the dot popover we occasionally see pop back in the sale section versus the factory version currently available? TIA!

  7. The houndstooth skirt is such a great graphic look. I'm with Shekster, I wish they had done it without sequins. It's not wearable as it is. Although, it's poly so I wouldn't buy it even without the sequins.

  8. OT, but was someone looking for a bow collar necklace recently? Whoever is, if you're still looking for one, I saw at least 4 on sale at the Willow Bend J.Crew in Dallas today! I didn't look at the price, unfortunately.

    HTH someone.

  9. There's nothing new that are must haves for me on this roll-out, maybe just the jean jacket. I'm probably going to wait till February, when they start releasing their Spring line.

  10. To cmg, regarding the retail vs. factory popover (reply won't work for me): I ordered the factory one and then scored the ivory retail one on popback last week. Both are 100% cotton and have the same RN and CA numbers on the side tag (whatever that means), but the style #s are different. The factory one says it's from Holiday 12 while the retail one says Summer 12. The factory one only comes s/m/l, etc. while the retail one comes in numerical sizes which, in my opinion, results in a better fit. The material feels the same and the design looks the same---there are black dots and then stitched ivory dots that are kind of like a shadow or something. Both are labeled ivory, but the factory one looks to me like it has a more yellowish tinge to the ivory, which I can't really explain because the other details are so similar. I ordered the retail 10 and the factory M, and I feel that the retail one fits me better because it's slightly longer in both the body and the arms (important to me because I'm tall), but if you are of average height or going to tuck it in it might not matter so much. The factory one is a worthy substitute if you are unable to get the retail one.

  11. I love the backdrop of the catalog but clothes are less than desirable. The printed jeans, weirdly quilted jean jacket, I am not loving the roll out. The new print (yellow, black, white and pink) is a bit too harsh in the dress but the shorts are great. Too bad I have no use for dress shorts.
