J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. With the Bundle-Up Event there are a lot of new items on promo, as well as a few others that are not necessarily cold-weather styles, and a few markdowns, too. I have updated the women's promo-priced items list here, and will have the men's list updated in just a bit.

  5. Can somebody comment on the wool angora snood_
    TIA

    1. It should be called the viscose wool nylon rabbit hair snood. Feels nice but not spectacular as I was expecting something softer and loftier. Reminds me of a child's scarf with a very simple knit. Not sure I will be keeping it because I was disappointed in the fabric content. I should know better and read the description more thoroughly.

  8. I see the 30% online promo, of which I must request a price adjustment on my purchase of yesterday, but is there ALSO an IN-STORE promo going on? There was no in-store promo on last week other than the 25%/30% on $150 min., but I keep seeing others talking about "stacking promos" while at B&M.

    1. I went to the J. Crew at the Westfield Mall in Sherman Oaks, CA last night and they had 30% off sale (final sale though) and you could stack that with the 25% off $250. I ended up getting:

      Cece flats
      Nora cap toe chain flats
      Rainbow flip flops
Green and navy polka dot scarf
3 pairs of women's polka dot trouser socks

      For $124 after tax.

Definitely check with your local B&M because there are amazing deals to be had.

PS - The sale section was very well stocked at this store and the sales staff was super helpful!

  10. I'm looking for opinions on JCrew's merino Turtleneck. I really wanted the cashmere one, but they are out of my size and the cashmere is still expensive.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I tried it but I couldn't send it back fast enough. I'm not a fan of turtlenecks, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But I found this turtleneck to fit very closely in the neck and I thought it was itchy. Normally I like J. Crew's merino sweaters, so I thought I might like this one. I guess I don't like merino wool tight on my neck.

      Delete
    2. I just wore mine for the second time yesterday and really like it. I feel it runs slightly big, so I recommend going smaller if you are between sizes. I find the wool comparable to the Tippis. Whether you find it itchy depends on what climate you live in; wool can feel itchy regardless of how soft it is if it's on the warmer side.

      Delete
    3. I've had good experiences with both J.Crew cashmere and merino sweaters, with the exception of the featherweight cashmere. I can't wear merino against my neck or I break out in a rash, but if you aren't as wool-sensitive I say go for it.

      Delete
  11. Unknown, I like the merino turtleneck a lot. I don't find it itchy, but you might if you are sensitive to wool. The turtleneck will likely fit fine if you are squarely in the middle of your alpha size range; I am at the top of the M range, and find the M a bit body conscious, while the L is baggy. The sweater is cut long. It is one of my favorite J Crew sweaters. HTH!

  13. Anyone own the Boulevard Trench in the coral color? I tried it on and it is so pretty and fits so well. I think it would be too bright and distinctive for me to wear very often, but if you have it, do you get much wear out of it? Or do you have it in another color, and what do you think of it? Thanks!

  14. @Ina, I am wondering how you were able to get the Wintress puffer w/both the 25% and the 30% off? I know they had them 30 off lasat week and I bought one, but I didn't know there was an add'l 25 off on top of that? Was that in-store only? I'm irritated b/c I bought it the same time and didn't get an add'l 25 off. Wondering if I could call and ask for a PA.

    1. Hi jruby18,it was only for a few hours, when they started the coat promo, but the 25% from the day before still worked.

Since it wasnt official i dont think you can get a adjustment.

  15. Unknown, I agree with Wendy - I love the merino turleneck. I never buy cashmere because I don't like the way it drapes and it pills. JC's merino is a staple in my wardrobe because it fits really well and wears beautifully. I have a ton of them. A great value (on sale of course).

  16. Hello! I missed out on last year's hacking blazer in vibrant flame. I don't care for this year's autumn coral as much. Hence, I'm debating settling for the schoolboy in modern red. Can someone who is familiar with both colors tell how they differ, ie, modern red vs. vibrant flame? TIA.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi cmg -

I bought the minnies in vibrant flame and the schoolboy in modern red at the same time, and joked that I could wear them as (an obnoxious) suit. They aren't exactly the same, but I would say they are pretty darn close!

  17. This is part review, part gripe: If you're considering the poppy Valentinas as your red holiday shoe, please be aware that they are very orange--IMO they are reddish orange instead of orange-ish red. They clashed horribly with the true reds in some of my holiday items, such as the factory plaid pant.

  18. Thank you thank you for all the reviews of the merino turtleneck! I've been so fixated on cashmere (I'm trying to be an adult and buy adult things), that I hadn't given the merino a look. I have run off to buy the navy and gray, despite telling myself that I'm all shopped out. I just find that when I buy something from JCrew, I always wear it (if I keep it). Such a wonderful store.

Another question--I've been eyeing that tipped Hacking Jacket. I feel like it's still to expensive. Is it? The Schoolboys have really come down. I'm willing to part with the Hacking Jacket if it just stays out of reach. But has it ever gone down below $200? (I am something of a neophyte in these matters).

Thank you all so much again!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can definitely pick up the Hacking Jacket for below $200 if you're willing to wait for it to go on sale+30% off. If you've never purchased a Schoolboy or a Hacking Jacket before, their shapes are very different with the Hacking Jacket having a longer, leaner cut and the Schoolboy fitting shorter and more boxy. I have multiples of both, but if you find that a particular cut is more flattering to your figure then I'd let that guide your purchase. HTH!

  19. Add me as another one who really likes the Merino sweaters. Just wanted to say that this year I ordered the 100% merino turtleneck from the Factory as it was less than half the price and I feel there is no difference between this Factory version and the retail version. I think I mentioned that in a review in the last couple weeks, just repeating here for those considering buying now.

  20. Those of you who own the vintage pajama set, could you comment on shrinkage? I think I need a smaller size, but if the cotton shrinks, I don't want to be stuck with pants that are too short...

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don;t think it shrink significantly. Go with your smaller size.

    2. Kelley, or any of those who have the vintage pajama set, thoughts? I keep eyeing the Vintage short-sleeve set, but haven’t seen it in person. How is the material…fit? Anything will help. I desperately need some new lounge wear.

      Delete
    3. I got the navy set last year for Christmas, and I wear it all year round. I am so in love! It didn't shrink at all, and it doesn't seem to have faded. I cannot say enough. I'm asking for another set this year!

For sizing, I'm a S/6/8 in tops, 6/8 in bottoms, and I went for the Medium. It's loose, but personally, I wouldn't size down.

      Delete
    4. I have the white short-sleeve one and I love it. Keep in my that it is shorter than the regular pajama set in the bottom too and I had to size one up from my regular size. It holds up well in the laundry. Can't say good enough.

    5. Thank you ladies! I'm 5'3, so the short one will be fine...I welcome it, actually. Now I want this even more…Hope there is a sleepwear promo next..ha. :)

  21. I love merino too, in fact on my blog today I am wearing oversize merino pocket v-neck with Blythe in polka dots and toothpick cord in salt. I loved this outfit.
Now for the reviews (i will post pictures soon):
Sperry navy quilted short boots - sized up since I am half sized and they fit great with thick socks. Very comfy and with full shearling-like lining, not like some 'duck boots' that only have it in shaft area. Overall great, and look quite flattering, even with a skirt. The only thing I did not like was that the laces were difficult to adjust because they only come off the top pair of hooks, the rest are threaded through the closed loops.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, I forgot to mention that I also tried on double serge wool pencil skirt in dark poppy and it is a true medium red, very pretty not orange and not pink (but also not deep blue tone red). If you were looking for a true medium red skirt I think this is it, it is very pretty and classic. I bought it although I am debating if I need it. I got it with the 30% off $98.

  23. I love the number two pencil skirt in dot brocade and the perfect match for it is the velvet dot ponte top. Both fit TTS and look great on my size 12 frame. I also think these would travel well. I'm 5'9" and the skirt hits just below my knees. If you are taller with long legs you will need to have the hem let out. I also managed to get the collection ruffle front blouse before it vanished. It really is the color of old silk - wish I had it in black too now. It is a little short - but still a lovely piece of clothing. It's not at all pirate-like or little-girly, but sophisticated. Needs a cami underneath.

  24. Yesterday I received the Collection giant bow shift and the pull-on crepe pants in mauve blush.

The Collection giant bow shift is beautiful. The fabric is a soft, substantial wool-silk blend and the color is vibrant without being too bright. Unfortunately "shift" may be an understatement in terms of the fit as it is extremely shapeless. I ordered my usual size and had what felt like an extra foot of material at the waist. It did fit well in the shoulders. As for the length, I am 5'2" and it hit me just above the knee. I'm debating whether or not it's worth trying to have this altered to fit or just taking it back...

As soon as I pulled the pull-on crepe pants out of the box, my bf asked if they were pajama pants. Nope, but they sure look and fit like they are! The color and fabric are lovely, but the fit does absolutely nothing for me. They really do look like pajama pants. They hit just below my ankle for length reference.

Today I should receive the pear sweater, Collection handknit mixed media sweater, Collection cashmere Tippi sweater in neon fuchsia, and the Collection crepe shift in soft fuchsia and can report back tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Susan, if you decide to keep the Collection crepe shift in soft fuchsia make sure you examine it very carefully. I ordered one on Pre-Sale and it came with a long snag in it. It was too big, shapeless and short so I returned and did not reorder. The green skirt in the same type of fabric that WMM reviewed was also snagged and extremely wrinkled. I did not have the body type for it either.

  25. Count me as one of those who loves the Merino. I prefer it to J.Crew cashmere actually - which is soooooooo hit or miss. It's too bad that most of the sweaters don't work for small petites (too much fabric in the midsection, indecently low v-necks). The Tippis are merino though, right? I am loving my navy/mint striped one and it has held up well after a few wears.

I stopped by my local store to (Copley in Boston) check out the cashmere striped Tippis and they looked a bit ragged already on the hanger. They are very soft but I wasn't even inspired to try them on.

Two reviews (both thumbs WAY up).

Cashmere short sleeve tee in a wreath green color and I like it a lot. Fitted and cozy. I am hesitant to keep it at $70 (on sale plus 30%) because I am not sure how it will wear but it is the perfect layering piece under suits for cold Boston winters. Great color too.

Stretch perfect shirt in sheer mint - to my great surprise, not sheer at all. Don't need to layer a cami under this to be decent. I am in love with this shirt - my normal size is fitted but not too tight across the bust, perfect in the shoulders (no pulling, etc), arms are slim-cut in a way that flatters (often J.Crew's shoulders and upper arms make me look like a linebacker), and the color is true to what is seen online. I was shocked at how much I liked this. If only it were non-iron - then it would truly be perfect.

Last week, I noted that the double cloth funnel coat in neptune green was thumbs down for me. Color was definitely more of a dull green toothpaste toothpaste) than the fresh mint blue in the catalog and online and the fit was not great on me (slim on sides but way too boxy in front and the belt was an unnecessary afterthought). Something is up with the double cloth fabric itself - felt a lot "rougher" than my fall/holiday 2008 lady day.

  26. Anyone have a review of the factory draped shift dress in polka dot aka the factory Jules dress. I am usually a 2 in dresses, but feel that factory can run large, so debating btwn 0 and 2. Any reviews or thoughts are greatly appreciated! TIA!!

  27. If you are going to visit the store I think the Stovepipe trouser in wool check are worth considering. They are currently sold out online but there are plenty of sizes in stores. They are $69.99 before 30% off and you can get additional 25%/30% if you buy over $150/$250. Mine came down to $34.30 and I liked them since I first tried them on (but they were $158 FP). I had to ask for another pair because first one I tried had some puckering at the side seams but the pair I bought looks perfect. They are great fit on my no hips no butt figure. You can see my old review HERE, I will probably post an OOTD with them next week.

    3. I agree with ajc -- I LOVE these pants. The cut is super flattering; the quality is excellent -- 100% wool and lined, unlike the solid colors. Bonus points now that they're on sale -- I got mine for under $60, nearly $100 off! I plan on wearing mine with a retro, 30's attitude with my Toni Tassel Loafers in the Vintage Champagne color, a drapey green-gold tie-neck silk blouse, and maybe a camel chunky grandpa cardigan. I'll post an outfit pic and review soon!

  28. Another thumbs up for merino sweaters. They're comfortable, not itchy, perfect weight under a jacket or tshirt, and most of them don't pill. I noticed the oversized v-neck one with pockets has some pills around the hip area but they're easily removed. I used to like J Crew's cashmere but this year most of the cashmere sweaters are itchy to me. I have some J Crew cashmere from 10+ years ago that is still in great condition.

  29. Purchased wintress puffer in Tall medium and love it. One of the best things I ever got from Jcrew. Well made coat, especially precious in tall size. I am 5.8 with long arms and the fit is great. Seems to be very warm too. I might get another color on sale later on.

  30. Anyone have thoughts on the wool plaid scarf in festive plaid (item 26131)? It is a men’s scarf, but I saw it paired with the popcorn sweater…I think I kind of love it for me…am I nuts? I would love something in this color family to pair with a sweater for an upcoming event.

  31. Peplum suiting dress in black review-
Fabric is par for the course, normal super 120's. The cut is wonderful, slightly generous, you could take the smaller of your two dress sizes. It hits me at the knee, 5'4" with a size 6. General feeling is: I am in love. It is sold out in the chili color or I would buy that too. I actually also purchased the banana republic pointe peplum dress and was going to return the one I liked least but I am keeping them both.

Madewell high gate pumps - size up at least a half size. This is an awesome shoe. Strangely comfortable for how high they are. The suede is beautiful. If you are in the market for a platform pump I would give these a try.

Funnel neck coat in black. Nothing much to add other than I think it is cut tight through the chest and upper arms. I wouldn't size up unless a bulky sweater underneath is a must because the lower half fit is normal to me. The fabric seems like the norm for the past couple years. I kept it because it is a good professional looking coat for work. I wore it with black heels the other day and someone said I look like Mary Tyler Moore. Ha.

  32. TXgirl14, I recently purchased the men's wool scarf in festive plaid, and promptly returned it. I'm not sensitive to wool at all, and I found it to be itchy and rough. However, the plaid is lovely...I had thought that it had navy in it, but it's actually black. Hope that helps!

  33. Collection Lustre Shell (item #98971)... I was prepared to send this back, thought I made a mistake ordering it. I got the Sand color. It's a basic style and a plain color, but it's terrific. It is thick and substantial and not at all see-through in this color. It's not fitted, it's a good length (on the long side). There is a subtle trim at the neckline (and maybe at armholes?). There is a button closure in the top back. Bra strap holders. I really like how it looks under cardigans. The first three things I tried it on with all looked wonderful with this under it. It could stand on its own without something over it, though. The color may wash out some complexions. It also comes in Festival Blue.

    3. Yes, I think it runs TTS. I buy a size 8 in J. Crew tanks and this fits like my other size 8 J. Crew tanks. Maybe I could have gone down a size, but I like the fit of the 8.

  34. Items from the last promo have arrived.

Yellow Lady Jacket--it's mustard, which others have noticed. And I have to stop fooling myself that I can really get away with this kind of boxy jacket. I took a 2, which is what I take in the Schoolboy and Hacking jackets. From the side, the Lady jacket stuck out and there's no way that sizing up would have relieved the problem. Also, the color on the web is such a nice and happy yellow and this is mustard.

Lady jacket going back (nicely made, though and if you can do cropped and boxy, more power to you).

Sequined striped shell. Too short and boxy, even with an XS. I also found the neckline too high. I *could* wear it, but I didn't love it--the sequined three quarter length tee from Factory was infinitely better (though sold out online).

Sequined striped sell going back. Can't really recommend.

SCattered Sequined sweater--the new one. I LOVE this sweater! Unfortunately I ordered a small, since the website advised that it was slim fit and I thought I might want to layer beneath the sweater. For reference, I took an S in the cashmere cable sweaters, but an XS in the polka dotted cashmere sweaters. I'm sending this sweater back and just reordered--the price is lower today anyway and I *think* I get free shipping. Maybe not. Anyway, the other things are being returned, so I will send this back and reorder.

Others have complained about this sweater, but I just loved it. I loved the color--bright but someone what deep, not an annoying cherry red is there a flurorescent light on this thing? red. I can see wearing this with many things. I am thinking about the other colors too, but perhaps when they are on a real sale.

Scattered Sequin sweater recommended, but check your size!

Heartsease Boy shirt in silk--FS. I took a 0, which is what I usually take with boy shirts. Love it.

Venus Fly Trap necklace. Hmm. I like it, but it's light. It's not substantial like other JCrew pieces that make you think Jewelry with a capital "J." Versatile piece--but I'd only get it on promo and then double promo if possible. I got the celery color and like it and will sale stalk the other color.

I am the person who asked about Merino sweaters--thank you again, and for the reminder about the Factory Merino turtlenecks. So appreciated!

  35. Ooh, just got the Windowpane Coat in the navy/red and it's so, so cute. Very classic and a bit preppy. Love the leather buckle detail at waist and cuff. Not a soft wool, so it's a tad itchy if it's touching bare skin at the neck, but not the worst. I really love it, and now need to make some decisions on coats! Will post pics and review hopefully tomorrow.

Also received the sequin bird tee and it's really fun as well. The bird detail is well done, and the shirt isn't crazy short, though it is on the boxy side. I usually like to size up in tees, but on this one, I'd stick with true size.

  37. My order consisted mainly in the tennis dress from last summer (the white dress with the navy blue sequin trim). I had been eyeing it for a while since the price dropped to $69 from $400 but I didn't want to take the risk with fs. It is a beautiful dress but cut very wide through the waist and hips. Like this it is unflattering but if I have it taken I think it would look great, althought it is highwaisted and has darts on the front. Does anybody have this dress and had it tailored? I went with my regular size (a 0) and it is the right size, the 00 would have been too tight in the top.

  39. Factory classic button-down in suckered plaid (41430) - I think this is a great shirt. Thin cotton that will be good for layering, has a slight "crinkle" to it, fit is TTS and pretty flattering. I kept trying the perfect shirt in ivory tartan (34446) from retail and didn't love it and finally think I've figured out why - I keep expecting that there's some green in it because the pics online and in the catalog are so blown out. I think it's gonna be white, red and green and it's actually off-white, red, blue, and black. I also didn't love the flannel feel and the white buttons felt super cheap. Anyway, I think the factory shirt will be fine for my winter plaid shirt and at about $33 (after 40% promo), less than half the cost of the retail shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I bought the velvet dot ponte dress last week with the 25% off promo. The XS fits great so I'd say TTS--I might have sized up if i thought I'd layer a blouse under it regularly like J Crew has it styled, but it's adorable as-is for a party/dinner dress, and would also be cute with a cardi for work or daytime.

  43. Those of you with connections, I have a question for you: Does J. Crew have a distribution center in the UK now or something? I found the Paisley Applique Top(item 95795)yesterday at the Time Warner Center store in both black and ivory on super sale, 30% off $24.99 marked down from $59.99 (allegedly retail $98). It's fantastic, a perfect ladylike work top short enough that I don't have to tuck in, and yet it's machine-washable cotton. The neckline tag says it's made in China, not surprising. However, the inner seam tag says J. Crew U.K. Ltd EC 4V 6JA. Was this a select run for the new London store or something?

  44. Stadium cloth cocoon coat in black:

I wasn't really sure how this would end up fitting me after reading many reviews, but I think it is TTS. I ordered my usual coat size 4 and it fits everywhere, except for that the sleeves were really, really long. I would typically purchase a petite 6, but no petite sizing available. I dropped it off at the tailor this morning for sleeve-shortening, and can't wait to get it back!

It's a really nice coat; the stadium cloth is very plush and soft. The piping and pocket detail inside the coat is very nice. My current coat is the Wool Duffle from 2009 in black, and I like that the Cocoon coat is a bit more dressy, clean-lined, and simple.

Booker boots with extended calf in black and estate brown:

I really needed to replace my beat up black and brown boots (JC Cadogan and Glenbrae), which I wear pretty much every single day from October-April, and I am really happy with the Booker boots. I have somewhat muscular calves and always have issues pulling on regular-sized boots, so I figured I'd try the extended calf version (the regulars were sold out, anyway). I asked the online CS what the calf circumference measurement was, and it was only one inch difference. I am really happy with them, and have no issue pulling these on. Though, annoyingly, the brown pair is easier to get on than the black pair.

They are a very simple boot. If you're looking for something more "interesting," then these probably aren't for you. I really like their simplicity and I think they're really just classic. The leather is not as thin as last year's version seemed to be. I

I am 5'1 and they hit just below my knee. I ordered a size 6.5, the size I wear in ballet flats, per the online CS suggestion. I am glad I didn't size up to a 7.

Highly recommend if you were on the fence!

  46. Wondering if anyone has seen and/or tried on the new white fair isle sweater and if it fits the same as the red one with the scrunchy shoulders.

  47. Calling all shorties..if you are looking for some new sleepwear try the flannel sleep pant in petite, they are perfect (I am 5'1" on a good day). I got the XSP in one of the many 30% off promos and love them. Also, got the Flannel Robe in XXS/XS which is the smallest size and it is quite large but guess robes are not supposed to be fitted. HTH.

  49. Got the Stadium-cloth duffle coat in LIGHT NECTAR. Color and fabric = GORGEOUS! Got a size 00 (which is usually a tad too big) and it was a bit snug by the underarms/shoulders (and i was only wearing a T underneath, no room for a sweater for sure). Dont know about sizing up as the waist and the rest of the coat was roomy enough. Anyone else have the same issue withthe fit?

    1. I wear a 2 in every j crew shirt there is, and I had to get a 4 in the duffle for the same reason. Too tight under the arm if I wore anything at all bulky. Seems like it's going to be a perennial classic favorite. I can't wait until after Christmas when I'm "allowed" to wear it. :-)

  50. Does anyone have a review of the Factory Anya flat? I'm torn between the 8 1/2 and the 9 (having never bought or even tried on J.Crew shoes), and they would be final sale. Are these comfy/true to size? Thanks!

  51. I personaly like the cashmere sweaters better. I live in St. Paul MN and it snowed over 16 inches here this weekend! When I wear cashmere sweaters it is much warmer than merino wool. I find my self having to layer 2 to 3 items of clothing when I wear merino wool and it really makes me look bulky. I think if you live in warmer weather, merino wool is fine, but for the mid west I need a couple good warm cashmere to carry me over the long winder days! Also, my sweaters from Jcrew never pills and I machine wash them with J Crew Cashmere wash. I can't do that with merino wool (i.e. dry clean only or they really lose their shape). Given the saying on dry clean and how often I wear my sweaters (every day for 7 month), I vote Cashmere all the way.

  52. Can anyone comment on the fit of the Icon Trench? Should I get the size I wear in perfect shirts or go up a size? TIA!

    1. kiwigem, any JCAs, myself included, went up a size in the icon trench. The material has no give and if you plan to wear more than a tank or tee underneath it, you should definitely consider sizing up. All of my other J.Crew coats (except the Lady day which also runs small) are size 6, as are most of my blouses, tops, and dresses, but I definitely need an 8 in the icon trench. I hope that helps you make a decision!
