J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    3. I don't see the new code here yet, but I did enough damage with the current one. :D

  3. Factory also has extra 40% off everything and with free shipping on $50+, code HOLIDAY.

I reviewed the Factory colorblock cashmere waffle sweater here.

  4. Mirror Floral Tee. I reviewed it in another post but I'll put it here too. Color is called Ivory (same as Signature Tee). It leans more white than yellow, though. The blue graphic is really pretty. It is short and I don't know how it will do in the dryer (I may hang it dry). Fit seems TTS, typical of their recent graphic tees. Material is thin.

  5. Has anyone tried the other fair isle sweater? It went on sale this morning and I don't know if I should order a small or extra small.

    1. The ski one? # 35921
I bought it but haven't gotten a chance to wear it yet. Bought usual size small. I think it's quite cute... But very heavy and warm.

    2. I have this sweater and really like it. I agree with Miss JR that it's heavy and warm. It's merino so it's a super nice wool. It's not shoulder-restrictive like the orange/red fair isle sweater. It fit true to size for me. I couldn't wear a buttondown on it the way I've seen it styled unless I was in freezing temps.

    1. Conster, call (315) 539-6003. Last time I was in that factory store they had tons of that wash of the straight and narrow (matchstick) jeans. And everything was 40% off in the store, and then 20% more off on top of that. Not sure if it's still going.

    2. hi there-- I just called and they are on the way! had to pay shipping but at least I found them with your help. thanks!

    3. Conster, so glad I could help and glad the pants are on their way to you!

  7. Paley pant (petite) -- my usual JC size 6p was too tight, so I reordered in the 8p and they fit perfectly. I am only 5'1" and they hit right at the top of my ankle, which is what I was hoping for. They are unlined, but they have a nice drape and look great on. Since the suiting doesn't often go on sale, I ordered the black, grey and navy, but the navy was too dark to make it worth it to have the black as well, so I ended up returning the navy. Very happy with these!

  9. *sighs* J. Crew canceled my order for the Jules dress in black. And everything else also remains "open." :( Leaving the country in two days. Not good.

  10. Went slightly crazy on the sweater orders over the last week/weekend, so I have a few quickie reviews:

Cashmere Turtleneck sweater (99166) runs unusually tight. Detest the sausage casing look, so I'm ordering a size up and hope for a more fluid fit. The pine color is brighter than in the online picture.

Tippi merino sweater (46725) and Merino turtleneck sweater (51663) run TTS. Sadly both colors were disappointing, so I'm returning them all. The "raisin" is just plain mid-brown, and "dark poppy" is a rather light bright orange-red, nothing "dark" about it.

OT, a plug for Talbots' "Italian Stretch Flannel Sheath", which seems good quality and doesn't impose a weird high waist as all of JC's suiting dresses do. It does run long and a bit large, but the lack of a waist seam makes it a winner at least on me. "Riding red" is beautiful, and they have black, green and a dark pink as well.

    1. Forgot to mention the Men's Lambswool half-zip sweaters (97183). They come in absolutely beautiful deep glowing colors - why is there no "heather cognac" or "deep navy" for the ladies? - but the fabric is so scratchy that I won't be giving them to any of the guys in my life.

  11. I received the hacking jacket in double serge wool. Did anyone else have a problem with the back vent sticking out? Also, there seems to be a lot of fabric under the arm area. I want to love it but it looks off on me.

  12. Can anyone comment on the fit of the symphony coat? TIA!

  16. Small review on a small item:

I purchased 3 pairs of JC colorblock socks a couple of weeks ago. They are all dark and/or brightly colored. The color is insufficiently saturated on the fabric such that when you pull them over your ankles you can see the white ribbing underneath. Not a great sign of quality on otherwise cute socks.

    1. I ordered it this morning, after the price had dropped. With the discount it comes out to around $250.

I guessed and ordered an extra small, since I tend to like turtlenecks to be more fitted. I'll post once I get the sweater.

I am a solid size 2 in the Hacking Jacket and Schoolboy and Perfect Shirts. In the Boy Shirts I'm always a 0.

Sweaters are confusing--sometimes I'm a small and sometimes an extra small. It depends on the sweater. But I've long admired the design of this one, and couldn't hold off once the price fell by another $100.

  19. Hello! Can anyone please tell me if the Linen Dot Popover was tts? My other J.Crew linen items seems to run large, but I don't know about this one since I can't find any reviews on the sizing for it. I just purchased an XS on ebay and am nervous it's not going to fit! Thank you so much! -Julie W.

    1. Julie W - AppGal tried it on in this post. I believe it runs TTS. The linen pieces sometimes stretch out a little bit with wear, so you might be just fine in any case.

    2. This sweater runs TTS and stretches out fairly significantly with wear. If you are between sizes definitely size down. HTH!

  20. I just want to rave quickly about the cashmere snood (not the purl stitch one, the plain one). The ivory and gray ones are sooooooo insanely soft and cozy. Seriously awesome. The bright pink (bright!) was $79.99 plus 30% off in stores today -- would be a fun pop of color if you can't do a bright coat.

  21. Mariner-Stripe Boatneck tee: Substantial weight but stretchy and comfortable. Very nice fabric. A bit short but not too bad. I can't remember J. Crew using this fabric for a tee, it was unexpected.

Pavé anchor pendant necklace: I don't see this on the web site today. There is no pave! It's a cheap gold colored chain with 2 cheap gold-colored anchors on it (2 different sizes). I double-checked my email confirmation and it is named exactly as I showed it here. My paper invoice calls it an Anchor Pendant necklace. This is going back for sure. This is not what I ordered.

  22. Collection Mohair sweater (heather pond color): Loved it until I put it on over a navy blue long sleeved tee. When I took the sweater off after a few minutes, the blue tee was totally covered in mohair. Not keeping.

  23. Selima Belle glasses arrived today. Not as curvy as they appear in the photo. IRL they read like a feminine iteration of the wayfarer. At first I thought I was going to send them back as they aren't what I expected, but they are so flattering I may keep them anyway.

Cocoon coat in grey. Wow- I really thought I was going to love this when I opened the box. The fabric and construction are beautiful. The design is a real let down for me. It's not really a cocoon at all (?!), but just a rectangular oversized coat. It made me look like Sponge Bob. So...no thank you.

    1. LOL about looking like Sponge Bob!!! That's exactly how this coat looked on me. No thank you is right!

  24. Has anyone tried hand-washing their Blythe blouse? I'm thinking about ordering one but hate dry-cleaning bills.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have and it worked like a charm! Used a gentle hand wash soap that you don't need to rinse out, soaked for 15 minutes, squeezed gently, rolled in a towel, and hung to dry on a hanger.

      Delete
    2. I have also hand washed my blythe blouse, the polka dotted one. I used my washing machine. I threw the blouse in a mesh bag and washed it on the "hand wash" cycle. It came out great. I had spilled greasy taco meat on it, which I first scrubbed with dish soap. Didn't hurt the shirt at all. It needs to be steamed or ironed, but haven't gotten around to that part yet!

  25. In case you are considering the knot bracelet, my store had just received it today. It is a pretty substanttial bracet (heavy and doesn't look cheap, it actually looks like real gold), and I love the design. The circumference is pretty small so that it doen't look oversized. I think it could actually stay on my arm (as opposed to fall all the way down at the end of the wrist). However the opening is slightly too big, in that I don't have to force a bit to put it on, which also means that it could twist and fall off easily. I am on the fence because I really like the design but not sure about praticality and weareability. The problem is the tags gets in my way and are too annoying to really get a sense of what it feels like to have it on and I am hesitating to cut them off. Do you know if you can still return when you cut the big black tag (the other one doesn't bother me but this one cuts uncomfortably into my wrist)?

  26. Ladies (and Gents), I have a question for you. I just order the Long Merino Cardigan in Black via jcrew.com. Are there any differences between the product in-store vs. online? I have a Long Merino Cardigan in Navy w/ beige piping, and the buttons are much smaller. When I compared the two tags (the one inside on the left near the hip), they have different style numbers and the in-store cardigan is FA12 and the online cardigen is HO12. Is there a difference in quality?!? Also, to be honest, I don't like the larger buttons. :(

    1. I think the navy one is called Merino Tipped Cardigan, while the other one is just plain. I have photos of both on my blog. Just do a search to find the photos. The Tipped one came in navy and a colour called brick sand for the fall season. The Long one is 'holiday' and is a bit longer. HTH

  29. I was my Blythe blouse, and almost all my other silk, in cold on the delicate cycle, then immediately press with a cool iron and hang to dry the rest of the way. They always come out perfect, plus when I put them in my closet they are ready to go, no more pressing or steaming needed.

  30. Purchased the boy shirt in poppy plaid (FP in store, $69.99 and sold out online) and was pleasantly surprised with the weight of it. I've been looking everywhere for a true heavy flannel-type material, and this is perfect. I definitely had to size down to 00 due to the fact that it was a Boy fit. Great color, super comfy. Stores should still have quite a bit left since it's FP, but I got an online price match + 30% off.

  32. On the off chance anyone else is thinking of putting a slide buckle on their Wintress sash, I just did, and I love the result. It's a subtle detail, but I think it really elevates the whole effect. I got the buckle at strapworks.com for next to nothing. If anyone wants a photo before they mess with their puffer, let me know. kiwigem (at) att (dot) net

  33. I received my WISHLIST promo items this AM and here is my review. I ordered the Collection Ribbed Sweater in Heather Flax, Collection Herringbone Sweater in Navy/Mint and the Minnie Pant Wool in Camel and the Trapper Hat.

Ribbed Sweater: I got this in XS, which is my usual Crew sweater size. The fit is boxy and loose. If you plan to wear it roomy as how it's styled, stick with your usual sweater size, but if you want it fit, size down. The color is darker IRL than the photo online. It looks like cream online, but it's actually an oatmeal color. I was lucky to get an adjustment on this. I initially ordered it for $219. before promo, and the price dropped Wednesday from $169.99 to $118.99 with the 30% promo, i asked customer service to adjust it-what a good deal!

Herringbone Sweater: I got this in my usual XS size, and it fits TTS. It's a cowl neck with three buttons on the back of the neck. I feel the knit of the sweater is thick, in comparison to the usual V-Neck and Long Sleeve Cashmeres. The color navy is dark, and I can barely tell that its navy. The mint color is visible IRL, the photo online looks black / white. It's currently $199.99 online, but when I was at my B&M last weekend the cabarnet was on sale. If you stalk the stores you might be able to get it at a cheaper price with the promo. I am happy with the sweater and plan to keep it.

Minnie Pant in Stretch Wool: I got this in my usual petite size of P2. I usually take a 0 in regular size. It fits TTS. I was a bit surprised that the wool fabric is a bit thin, compared to the other 'wool' Capri pants and No.2 skirt. The length is the same as the Cafe Capri-short. It's a bit loose around my legs and looks nothing like how the Minnie hugs the model's legs online. No side pockets, only on the back. I am content with it and will keep it, especially at $55 with the promo. I wouldnt buy it at full price unless its discounted.

I am pretty much done with the fall season...all the promos and sales is going to get me in more trouble. On to Spring... :-)

    1. I meant to say that the Herringbone sweater was priced lower than online. So make sure you stalk your B&M to get a good deal. ;-)

    2. After playing dress up with my new J.Crew clothes I have changed my mind on a couple of items that I am now planning on returning.

Ribbed Sweater in Heather Flax: Though I love the boxy feel, I made the mistake of ordering an XS when I should have ordered an XXS. I just didn't feel good wearing it. I also was not feeling the knit of the sweater after all, looks like it can be prone to snagging, unlike JCrew's other standard sweaters that are tightly knitted - VNeck, Isabel, Boyfriend...So back it goes to the mother ship.

Minnie Pant in Camel: The length looks good. From the front it looks good. From the back it looks ugly. Cursed flat Asian butt. (haha) I have skinny limbs that I don't fill the pants the way the model does pictured online, problematic around the sides and butt area. The capris look nice on me but the Minnie I can't be her friend. So back she goes.

      Oh well I save $160!

  34. Holy cow! Managed to go to both the crewlet and the U village b&m! Outlet was having an additional 20% off everything. SAs were handing out coupons, I only got one after I had an item in my hand, so pick something up or ask if you go, not sure how long it is going on. They had the new anchor sweater and a pile of the sequin heart sweaters. Didn't check sizes as I had the kiddos in tow and it was a whirlwind trip. Prices were not great, anchor sweater only an additional $10 off. Jackie's and Charley's were an extra 40% off. Lots of new spring stuff.

U village sale section was ah-mazing! Tons of toothpick jeans and cords marked down to 29.99, sailor tee was 24.99, found a Jules paisley dress for 99.99, but it looked horrible on me. Overall, a very well stocked store. Lots of sale tippis, too.

Just received the polka dot toothpick jeans and love them, they run true to size to a bit large. I ordered my usual 26 and was worried because the pink toothpick jeans in 26 were soooo unflatteringly tight. If jcrew would make all their colored denim in the fabric of the polka dot toothpick it would be awesome!

Also bought the midnight tweed jacket today and love! Was going to wait until it went on sale, but the SA said it has been selling really well and probably would not go on sale anytime soon (but of course, you never know). I took my regular size 2.

  35. A quick thumbs up on the mint snakeskin janey flats. They are gorg. Great shade of mint, high quality leather. I wear mostly TB revas and JC ceces so I was a little scared that the heel would look a little dated. It's just small enough where you can't necessarily notice until you cross your legs and see that great gold detail. A steal for $105. If you are contemplating, go for it before FS!

  36. My Celebrate shipment arrived.

I got the Kelly Green plaid shirt. It is flannel and feels much like that mustard colored flannel Boy shirt that is now sold out. I love the color and the cut. It fit me the way that all the Boy Shirts do--TTS. I recommend it though of course you may want to wait for a promo price. I just couldn't wait.

I got the notBlack Watch Perfect Shirt. As others have noted, it's an odd fit. I'm always a 2, sometimes a 0 in the Perfect shirt and yet this is a bit tight. It's not so tight that I will return the shirt, but I do notice a difference. I'm a 34A, so sizing down often doesn't bother me--except in the shoulders. I got the shirt for $35, so won't be returning it. If it doesn't fit after the first wash, I'll give the shirt to my mother who is smaller than I am.

Polka Dot Boy Shirt now on sale. I wanted to love this shirt, but I find the fabric thick and the cut unflattering. Even though I sized down to a 0, the fabric still hangs there stiffly. The polka dots to me look very weak on the fabric. Even marked down, I will be returning this shirt since so many other things fit me so much better.
