JustVisiting - no don't worry ... I had a similar reaction. I just had trouble bringing myself to care about the societal implications of a pretty innocuous-seeming J.Crew catalog shoot and thought it was interesting that it was that big a deal.
DeleteCatalog shoots don't exist in a vacuum. Fashion has a history of taking young, thin, and white models (the beauty standard in the U.S.) to "exotic" locales and juxtaposing them against the "natives". It's a common trope and problematic considering the current lack of diversity in the fashion world (yes, J. Crew's catalogs are generally diverse but to a point) and history of race relations and class divisions in this country and around the world.

ReplyDeleteIt's easy to say that when some of the top designers in the world have just "okay" quality themselves. Burberry quality is truly lacking from their bags to their clothing. I'm not impressed. Chanel's leather bags start to chip and peel after a year of light use themselves.

DeleteIf you buy designer goods from the actual store there are no quality issues. Stay away from ebay or resellers unless you have deep knowledge of the products. Authentic Chanel bags don't chip and peel after a year of light use. Can't say I've ever had an issue with Burberry either.

ReplyDeleteCongrats Alexis and other blogs shown on the special, so I guess putting in a vent, isn't just getting it off your chest. I loved the special to be honest and to hear Mickey mention, holey tee shirts and pilling cashmere they can't say they were not aware.
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest, when Mickey mentioned the holey tees and the pilling cashmere, at one point he looked right at the camera -- freaked me out because it looked like he was talking to me in my living room!
