J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Two topics:
    1. I placed an order for two popbacks last week and to my surprise, they both shipped and what arrived was actually the same as the product name online (I'll explain below). I am shocked, because as some of you know, I have ordered mystery popbacks in the past and what arrived was wildly different from what I thought I was ordering.
The first was the Parke topcoat, which is my favorite JC outerwear in the past 5-7 years. Two years ago I spent 8 months trying to track down the brunswick blue topcoat in my coat size, and found out it was an online only color that sold out fairly quickly so I gave up and settled on icy purple, which I'm currently wearing and loving. The popback was a brunswick blue topcoat two sizes bigger than my size, but I still ordered it. It shipped and arrived NWT (another surprise), and even though it is big, I will finally be able to wear a thick sweater under a Parke topcoat, which has very high narrow arm holes (at least for me).
The second was a persimmon toggle sweater cardigan, which I think is from 2011 or 2012. I remember seeing it on Glee, back when lots of JC cardigans and tops showed up regularly on characters. When it popped back, the description had the name and style number but no photo or description. I ordered it out of curiosity to see what would arrive. It arrived in new condition but no tags. I didn't realize it is a lambswool mix, and I am allergic to lambswool, so I will be returning unless someone here is interested in buying it for $30 (including shipping). It's a small, in the persimmon (orange) color.

Second topic (sorry it's OT): After reading everyone's reviews of Poshmark to sell/buy, I am finally joining mainly to sell NWT or new items. I don't really know much about how to use it, so any tips will be helpful. Is there a code or something that can be used (not sure what for but anything helps)?

    1. Someone may send you a referral link to get started (I'll let someone else use theirs, since I am not buying much these days).

My experience with Poshmark as a seller is that Madewell stuff sells pretty quickly, but my J.Crew pieces tend to linger. Buyers on Poshmark aren't willing to pay much for things, so even if something is NWT, you'll get offers from people for like 5 bucks for an item you listed at 50. Expect plenty of questions about measurements, and some people even request that you "model" something if you don't supply pictures of it on a human.

Poshmark culture is... interesting :-) I've had better luck recently selling pieces to my husband's colleagues directly, honestly.

    2. Thanks! I'm actually not selling a ton of JC stuff because I tend to wear mine to the bones. I have a lot of Anthropologie stuff (third party brands like Tracy Reese, etc., and in-house brands) that I outgrew way too quickly. Does Anthro sell well?

    3. @eeps I have sold a lot on Posh and Monica's assessment is on point. My JC stuff lingers but my Anthro stuff sells really well. Expect lots of lowballing, but overall it's been the best platform for me. Make sure you include tons of pictures and measurements in your descriptions to cover yourself since items are final sale and sometimes people get buyers remorse and claim the item is not as described.
If you'd like, you can use my referral code when you sign up, it is bankygirl. It gives you $5 in credits, and I believe it gives me $5 if you decide to make your first purchase at some point. I've only made one purchase for a long sought after item and the seller was sweet and the item was in pristine condition.
Please let us know what your user name is so I can share your listings. If anyone else wants to drop their usernames here too, I'm happy to share your listings as well!

    4. I have been selling on Poshmark for a few years now and I feel like I go through cycles where I will sell a lot and then have times where I won’t sell anything for a while. Around Christmas was kind of slow for me but I have recently sold quite a bit. Like Monica said, the Madewell stuff sells really quickly! I don’t have as much Anthro but that sells well too. Jcrew is a mixed bag. For some reason their denim doesn’t seem to sell well. I just consigned several pairs of NWT jeans since they weren’t selling. Also, I take a lot of pictures (try to use natural light), measurements, and include fabric content in the description.

    5. I don't have much J. Crew on mine but I'm all for co-sharing! I love to share friend's listings. I'm cheritheberry.

    7. I have sold a fair amount of stuff there. Every now and then you get a really bad buyer (you can block them from shopping on your site) but overall I find it much easier than EBay. I have gotten some great bargains as well - a pair of $450 Belgian Loafers for $90 (never worn). It is worth looking to buy too.

    8. @cher I shared all your listings (at least I think it was you!)
@eeps Make sure they load the $5 signup credit to your account! Let me know when you list some stuff and I'll share it as well. I hope we are not the same size so I am not tempted, you must have an amazing closet!

    9. @Anthro Blogger, I saw that you are so sweet, thank you! I will finish reciprocating after I complete some work.

    10. @Anthro - I just started adding a few things that I know the sizes off the top of my head. It's easy to edit listings, right? I know what I have in my closet but I don't always remember what size I have.
I think you're much smaller than me (even at my smallest size) so probably a lot of things won't fit you. But most of what I'm selling were purchased from sample sales which tend not to have tag sizes but are almost all size XS/S/0/2. I bought a lot of fancy stuff in preparation for friends' weddings, etc., but I totally gained weight before my friends actually got MARRIED. Argh.

    11. I go through phases too. Sometimes I sell stuff and sometimes it sits. Sigh.

Happy to share other closets as well.

    12. @eeps, I seriously considered that sweater, but I decided the toggles didn't work with my usual style. I looked up photos from the item #, so I knew how it would look.

    13. eeeps - A blogger recently had a detailed series on how to sell poshmark. She also wrote about how to buy on poshmark.

Unfortunately, poshmark is not available in Canada so I can't speak from personal experience but her advice is very detailed and you may find it useful

    14. Thanks Toronto! Super helpful to learn about Poshnark algorithms. I was wondering why I was getting so many shares.

  2. I purchased the jungle cat shirt (the one on sale, not the new one) and I love it! The silk seems substantial and the print is even nicer in person! The olive color is pretty true to the picture. As far as sizing, I took my usual size. The fit is relaxed and the buttons don't gape. There were no loose threads on the shirt and it reminds me of J. Crew's old quality. I love it and highly recommend it. I am cautiously optimistic about the seams. I paid about $27 with the 50% off sale and my student discount and it is worth every penny. Actually, it is probably worth more, which is not something I remember saying about J. Crew lately!

    2. I got it for the same awesome price that you did, and I am very happy with it as well! The colors are sufficiently different from my other silk shirts that I am planning on holding onto it (even though I have two other J Crew tiger shirts now... quite the collection!) I love that it is chic and luxe, while utterly work-appropriate. I wore it with black separates, but it will also look nice with white/cream this summer.

    3. I also like the color, it works great with the ivory princess mini for a Spring look.

    4. You guys reminded me I have this shirt NWT. Took it out and am wearing today with the bow pencil skirt. Looks great and I can’t wait for the weather to get warm enough for me to wear the matching silk pants. Also working up the courage to wear the entire hookup to wear despite the pajama look. Thinking if I wear with a blazer too it’ll look less pjs?

    5. @eeps, I was having the same thought. Definitely do not wear your fuzzy slippers with the outfit.
With the shirt tucked, it looks less casual. I also tried the shirt open with a mock neck shell underneath and with an unstructured light blue blazer on top. It's so pretty, I don't care if it is not fully "corporate".

  3. i ordered the Button-front linen midi dress in faded indigo stripe (Item L2571)... with all the magic CARDLOVE and retailmenot promos, it came out to just under $50. i know i shouldn't, but i couldn't help myself for that price!

  4. Some items from the recent sales arrived:

    1. Silk lady blouse with shoulder buttons item: L1550. This will go back. It is a nice blouse, and I love silk, but the cut does not work on my hourglass shape. For the right figure this will be a neat top - I like the asymmetrical stripe. I was also sad to see the white color had makeup on it from some careless person who tried it on.

    2. Sheath dress in leopard bi-stretch cotton item: J5876. i originally ordered in a 6 and switched to a 4. The 4 is a snug fit on top, but appropriate for this style dress. I'd say it runs bit large, since I am not usually a 4 on top. This is a work-appropriate dress with a jacket, and a date-appropriate dress without.

3.Point Sur short-sleeve ruffle top in painted dot item: K9669
Impulse order on (not final!) sale. I do not wear ruffles and I do not like polyester tops. I love this poly top with the ruffles. It's feminine but not ditsty. The v-neck is flattering and not too deep, the sleeve length is perfect. The inner lining means it is not see through. Call me converted. The small fits well if a bit loose, but not enough to size down unless you are a borderline.

    4. Superga 288 Mule sneaker item: K1101. At $6 this was an easy chance to take. Cuter than I expected, and will be fun to slip on with shorts or a t-shirt dress on summer weekends or evenings. My usual 10 fits great in length. They are a bit wide, but you can tighten the laces.

    5. Officer Pants in Khaki 2Tall. I tried these a few times and kept liking them better. The leg is very wide, so may not be for everyone. They make my hips look smaller and with heels my legs look very long. The Tall is almost too long, I need to wear at least 2 3/4 inch heels. But the regular would have been loafers only. The fabric is heavy, and they are well made. There is no belt loops, the high waist looks great as is. The contrasting buttons show up that way.

    1. I noticed that today the Officer pants are again excluded from promos, so I'm probably glad I got them with stacking codes that worked out to 50% off.

    2. Wow that was lucky! BTW I get my two pairs of pants and white slingbacks at the end of the week and I’m very curious if they will work.

    3. I'll be interested in your review. I looked at your Everlane pants - they suit you better than the Everlane models.

    4. Thank you. I agree. I mean I hesitated trying them for so long because I wasn’t crazy about how they looked on the models, but they work well for my proportions.

  5. I received the roll neck top in pink pavilion floral. It's very cute, but the fit will not be for everyone. It's a little short and boxy. I'm not tall but when I try to wear it off the shoulder, it is too short. So I'll wear it normally and not OTS. Otherwise, I do think the neckline is cute.

  6. I got a few orders today, stopped home quick on my lunch - several pairs of jeans which I haven't tried on yet but I did try the Ella sweater blazer and it is HUGE. I got a small - definitely would have needed to size down to an XS so I'll have to see if I can stalk a popback and get a price adjustment to the price I paid. I have the point sur shoreditch straight jeans to try in bright worn wash as well as the very light wash frosted indigo to try on. The darker ones are pretty similar to the Madewell ones I just purchased so not sure I need both. My liberty skirt and other items are due to arrive Friday so I'll report wback when I have them.

Suz - I'm looking forward to your white slingback reviews - I keep looking at them but I am also deperately afraid of ruining white shoes only after a few wears.

    1. We shall see, I ordered several pairs from rack and they were ridiculous. I really like the Everlane ones but it seems crazy for me to spend that much on white/bone. I don’t need them to be total workhorse shoes. I just thought they’d be nice to wear to dinner. 😂

  7. I received the liberty mayapple sheath dress. I took the bigger of my dress size and didn’t need to. The fit didn’t do me any favors - and the print was more mature than I expected. Will be returning. Mayapple print looks way better onscreen IMO.
