JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Has anyone tried the Reeds sweaters? I just got the first of two and I'm surprised at the sizing. I guess I'm used to JCrew "sizing".

It's the mock turtle neck with the diamond in the front... It's fitted alright. I bought it in my usual size small (I'm dress size 4) and it fits properly (sleeve length, shoulder seam, etc) but I guess I just wanted baggier. Anyone try sizing up in it? Wondering if it looks sloppy a size larger.

    1. I ordered the same sweater but have not received it yet. From the photo online it does look to be baggier - I'm curious as to how the fit will be on me now that I've heard your review. Are you going to return it for a larger size?

    2. I think in the pic online, there's two buttons opened on the sides? Which makes it swingy but not really what I wanted either. One button undone is fine tho. I may order a larger size and compare. But I'm on the fence. I think the other sweater I ordered was delivered today so we'll see how that fits.

    4. Sorry... Didn't see this.

      It's black.

  2. Has anyone tried the velvet leggings? I have 2 back to back parties in early December (the first is a kids birthday party) and these seem like they would be festive but still comfortable for chasing a toddler/managing a one month old. What would you pair on top?

    1. I haven't seen them, sorry. When I wear leggings I prefer a loose top. Do you have any soft tunic length tops? I can see going with a mid-thigh top and then layering on a vest or a jacket. The top layer could be shorter.

What about your shoes? I guess low heel booties would be the natural choice, but I'd look at my loafers first.
Or if you are going to go casual, how about a flannel shirt worn like a jacket over a t-neck?

    2. I’ve worn velvet leggings w a festive long tunic and cute flats for the holidays in the past. A word of caution: they are absolute magnets for every bit of lint and fluff in the room!

    3. My experience with velvet leggings was from the early nineties, so not specific to,Jcrews version, but I found they didn't stay put on my body for some reason. They twisted around and were not comfortable. I think for bottoms the velvet pull on pants are more versatile, although this year's reviews are not great,

  3. The watercolor pencil skirt is perfect with the Maeve velvet buttondown from Anthro - in Mint. I love the skirt, but droopy sweaters don’t do anything for me, and I think an old enemy from 8th grade designed the matching jacket. You can see the velvet shirt next to the skirt on my IG @wellfedfred. KEEPERS!

    1. Oh, yay. That's great! Plus the velvet shirt will work with other pieces too.

  4. Today I loved my black/white funnel neck striped shirt. I wore it with button front any-day pants (actually they say pixie inside) and low heel booties. The long back covers my rear at work, and the neckline is a fun change. My husband was not a fan at first, he prefers fitted top, but he like it today. It took me many tries to get the right size - I tried 8,6,4, 8T, 6T and 4T. In the end 4T was the best choice, although I'm only 5'7" the extra length really improved the look.
I tried to add a layer over this top, and could not get a look that worked. The neckline is lost under a blazer or sweater, and the body and sleeves bunch up. I suppose I could wear an undershirt for warmth, but how else can I wear this top in my chilly office?

    1. How about a long open sleeveless sweater-vest?

    2. Good idea, I also thought about that, but of course I don't own one...wonder if I'd like it for other outfits in the winter? I think I could practice with a short vest to see if the neckline would work with a vest.

    3. I've actually worn mine with a sweater over it, with the shirt peeking out the bottom and the neckline still slightly visible. I treated it like any other button down shirt.
Also I like the thinner striped material as opposed to the eyelet because it can be tucked. I wore it with the tie waist chambray shorts a few weeks ago (in FL) and got lots of compliments, it's perfect for warmer weather too because it's loose and breezy.

    4. Also, I have mine on a hanger (from traveling) with a black and gold star button down from Madewell and it looks great. I think it could work well to layer something under it. I always wear a tank under it anyway but a black turtleneck or button down would look kind of cool.

    5. @Suz Has, thanks! I am going to try a black turtleneck underneath and see how that goes.

    6. I second the black turtleneck idea. That shirt is so hard to get right! I tried the 2, 2T, 4, and 4T before keeping the 4T...and I'm only 5'4".

    7. Tried the black t neck but it messed with the drape of the cotton. Maybe a tissue tneck would have worked, but I do not have a black one. I have an old (but still good) Ann Taylor leather jacket that is almost a blazer. It's a size large on me, but it does work over this top without anything bunching up.

  5. Styled the cashmere cable knit turtleneck and tartan scarf on the blog this week. Fit of sweater is oversized, but I didn't size down. Wearing a size small.
